Heavy Metal 12-Tone Music The performance practice of Étude on a Twelve-Tone Row is a little more exciting than the program notes would lead you to believe. While the only credited performer that evening was Derek Polischuk on piano, the piece also included Jesse Berent and Matt Heinecke on guitars, Carlos Dominguez on bass and Jeff Olsen on drums. They snuck out on stage after the solo piano started and turned the piece into a 12-tone heavy metal song. Étude remains serial in its construction, although it is a completely tonal rock song with a good beat (Schoenberg would've done it too had he lived to see the 70's). What better way to end a fun concert than with a good 12-tone piece?
