I will assume, for my own convenience that we're listing composers other than Bear McCreary (leaves more room that way); it still pains me that I have to choose from among many favourites (I'm sorry Alan Silvestri); also, I'm mentioning soundtracks as a whole entities, and they may or may not contain individual favourite pieces:

Hans Zimmer:

Crimson Tide
Gladiator
The Lion King
Batman Begins
Sherlock Holmes

Danny Elfman:

Edward Scissorhands
Batman Returns
Mars Attacks
Scrooged
Beetlejuce

Klaus Badelt:

Equilibrium
Ultraviolet (Just the score, not the movie!)
Pirates of the Carribean

Jerry Goldsmith:

Logan's Run
The Mummy

Basil Poledouris:

Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer
Robocop
The Hymn to Red October

Throw THE MISSION on to that list and you'd have my top 5 Morricone tracks as well. Although trying to narrow down his prolific output into favorites is a ridiculous task. But, yeah... good call, especially on Cinema Paradiso and The Thing.

But, if you somehow don't know the music to The Mission, check it out ASAP. :)

This was a hard thing to do! I never behave (where would I get if I did?) so I am going to break all of the rules. I couldn’t come up with a 5X5 list because I don’t prefer all of the scores, just some. So here is my list in order of preference:

Bear.

John Williams-Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Star Wars
Hanz Zimmer-The Dark Knight, Gladiator, Sherlock Holmes, DaVinci Code
John Barry-James Bond, Dances With Wolves, Somewhere in Time
Maurice Jarre-Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia
Michael Nyman-The Piano
Danny Elfman-Batman
Jerry Goldsmith- Total Recall, Alien
A.R. Rahman-Slumdog Millionaire
Vangelis-Blade Runner
Greg Edmonson-Firefly series
James Horner-Apollo 13

Thanks for reading!

there's only three and a half i'd like to add, because everyone else is already above :).

Yann Tiersen
Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain (aka Amélie)
Good Bye Lenin! (a german movie)
Tabarly (documentary film, but interesting to watch)

Sofa Surfers (austrian band)
Der Knochenmann
Silentium
Komm, süßer Tod
(three austrian (no kangaroos) 'darkly humorous crime films', as english wikipedia calls one of them)

Philip Glass
Koyaanisqatsi
The Hours
Candyman
The Truman Show
Dracula (the restaurated version of the film von 1931)

the half one are the dust brothers with their soundtrack for fightclub, in some moods it replaces philip glass, but mostly it is somewhere from place 6 to 10).

and the other two of five would be thomas newman and bear mccreary.

I'm glad I see that someone else picked Thomas Newman's score / soundtrack for Meet Joe Black. As far as everything else goes for this thread I still have to get my list together.

BUT, I REALLY like the responses in this thread so far. Thanks to Bear for starting this thread. This is cool and I'm glad that the forum is really starting to come together like this.

So Say We All ?

:)

I'd like to add a few more soundtracks that I think are outstanding,

Dune - Toto

Last of the Mohicans - Trevor Jones

Hunt for Red October - Basil Poledouris

Blade Runner - Vangelis
