BG 4.0 DVD Documentary: “The Music of BG”

Posted by Bear McCreary on January 4th, 2009

Battlestar Season 4.0 is finally released on DVD this week.  I’m thrilled to announce officially what many of you have suspected since early reviews of the DVD leaked out: This DVD set includes my original documentary “Inside The Secrets Of The Behind The Making Of The Music Of Battlestar Galactica: Revealed.”

This is a film I produced with Matthew Gilna and Kristina Maniatis that premiered last April at our Los Angeles Battlestar concerts.  If you missed our shows last spring, here’s your chance to catch up.  And since you’re reading my blog, I’m assuming you’re already a fan and will be checking out the DVDs at some point anyway.  :)

Many people came together to help make this film a reality, but there are several without whom it would never have existed:

Matthew Gilna and Kristina Maniatis… You both went above and beyond the call of duty here, and poured yourselves into this project.  And congratulations on your recent engagement!  For all this, I owe you guys a wedding march or something.  (Taiko drums and bagpipes??)

James Callis… Shooting these scenes with you was a blast, and an inspiration as well.  And your footage from Vancouver with the cast was masterful!

And everyone else who pitched in:

RANDOM TRIVIA: If you saw the concert premiere last spring, you may notice there are a few differences in this DVD version.  In one scene, the camera very obviously pans to a poster of Eureka.  As originally shot, this was a Terminator: TSCC poster.  However, that show is owned by an entirely different mega-corporation, so the process of licensing that graphic would have been prohibitively expensive and time-consuming.  Rather than simply blurring it out, I turned to my friend Phil Broste, a visual effects artist (and also an excellent writer / director himself).  Phil seamlessly replaced the image on the poster with a Eureka poster (like BG, owned by NBC Universal).  I was stunned with how effective it was,  especially considering the shot is hand-held:

Keep checking this blog every Friday night starting January 16th for an entry about each week’s episode. There’s also other exciting news that will be unveiled here in the coming weeks, including information about an upcoming Battlestar Galactica concert.

And I hope you guys enjoy our little documentary.

This is fantastic news! I had no idea this was going to be on the DVD. Now I really can’t wait until Tuesday!
Everyone complaining about the price of the half season DVD set should be satisfied now because this makes it more than worth it!

Please note my comment above was not directed to anyone posting on this blog. If you check the Amazon reviews, several people have complained about the price.

Sweet. Not like I wasn’t going to pick it up, but it’s great to know that the “there’s music on this show?” video you’ve posted about will also be on the DVD. :) And good news to hear there’ll be more concerts. Anything on the east coast this time?

From reading your recent posts, it seems that soon you’ll have scored all of season 4.5 and — I imagine — start working on the last BSG soundtrack album. However, I wonder if you have considered the idea of an arranged album also.

This is a concept a lot more prominent in video game music than film music (I can name dozens of arranged video game music albums, where in film the only example I can summon is the Princess Mononoke Soundtrack CD arranged into the Princess Mononoke Symphonic Suite CD). But still I think it’s an idea with some pull to it. I imagine the season soundtracks have to stick to a somewhat show-true format. However, a BSG-arranged album would let you pull your favorite motifs from the series and play with them freely, develop them more fully, combine different ideas you had in different seasons, even be more experimental, and craft the songs as pure music-for-the-sake-of-music rather than extended cues. Maybe even have suites based on ideas, like the twisting, oft-intertwining, yet at last separate romantic paths of Kara & Lee, which could mix and shift between their various themes in a musical retelling of their story. And it would be great to hear a version of the Adamas theme that accumulates all the musical ideas you’ve had for it throughout the series. :)

I realize that any additional BSG music release is probably a publisher decision, and I don’t expect any promises. I’m just throwing the idea out there. :)

Finally, a chance to see this. Although, it probably won’t be included on the R2 dvd’s, as is always the case with extra’s here. (The Resistance webisodes or the extended Unfinished Business episode for example)

I’m looking forward to the episode entries. :)

Absolutely fantastic news! I’ve been trying to tell my (musical) family that there is such complexity in the score, but they’re too busy trying to figure out who the frak is doing what to notice. :P Now I can play this for them, and they can appriciate the lengths you go to to capture the themes, symbolism, and overal atmosphere of the moment. Thanks to you and everyone who produced this work, I love it without having seen it yet!

@Thomas: You’re stuck buying poorer Region 2 DVDs in Europe, but some of us have it worse: after moving to North America with my existing R2 DVD collection, I am now faced with several unappealing options which all come down to spending a lot of money on either new hardware, replacement DVDs or imports.

It’s a sad fact that regional restrictions mean that interesting meta-content like this documentary is only available to a limited portion of the audience. Sure, you can hope for crummy YouTube versions or a torrent, but both of those options are piracy and generally inferior quality too.

Personally, I would gladly plonk down a couple of bucks for a DRM-free legal download of this, especially if the digital distribution means more money goes to the actual people that make it rather than the middlemen who waste giant budgets on corny spoileriffic promotions (*cough*you will know the truth*cough*).

Sorry for hijacking the topic. I’ll just add that for me, Christmas was delayed this year, arriving on January 16th instead: Santa’s delivering new BSG eps as well as more of Bear’s fascinating music blogging… the posts are now an integral part of my viewing experience.

The first half of season 4 has been out on PAL DVD (R2) for several months already, but I assume the documentary isn’t included there.

Do you know if it will be included on the full season 4 DVDs Bear?

Hi,

I love BSH, I love the soundrack, Your music is perfect and it’s a big part of this show too…I’m happy with my French DBVD’s version of season 4 (even I prefer watch the show in its original version :P)…I loved the music doc, it was great and funny :D
I have a question, There is a little chance that we have the singing version of “Roslin & Adama theme” on the season 4 soundtrack ? :)

Thanks very much.

Namaste

Kel

Hmmm, sorry it was BSG and not BSH *headdesk*

I was going to wait until 4.5 comes out before getting DVDs just so I can get them together but now, I am totally going to pre-order.

“..including information about an upcoming Battlestar Galactica concert.”
Excited about this as well!! Is this the one that in a previous post you had noted you wanted to have a full orchestra?

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! :) Can’t wait to see it!

Glad to see in the credits that Jane Espenson’s on there as well-she’s awesome.

Can’t wait to hear about the tour and all the shows that are (ahem) already booked in Seattle. Hint, hint.

Hi Bear! It’s Pearl from LAX. I just wanted to say how nice it was chatting with you the other day, and I hope you had a nice holiday.

I had an feeling that this might get added onto the DVDs, and I’m so glad it did! The clips I’ve seen are brilliant, and I can’t wait to pick it up tomorrow. Keep up the blogging, and definitely think about having a concert in New York sometime soon. We’d love to have you!

and here i was already excited for tomorrow’s release! this makes it even better. and i simply cannot wait for the episodic blogging to begin again… i’m amazed (and appreciative) that you put so much time and effort into sharing your process. it’s inspiring and incredibly interesting.

wherever your concerts are going to be this year, i’m definitely hoping to make a trip to one!!

Wow, excellent news! That makes my day (also the fact that La La Land finally shipped the T:SCC soundtrack).
I totally going to buy BSG season 4.0 now.

Bear – I don’t know if this has come up somewhere else on your blog. If so I’m sorry to ask again, but do you plan to give a Battlestar Concert somewhere in Europe soon (perhaps with Raya and Brendan)? This would be fantastic!

So say we all,
Sandra (from Switzerland)

Tick…tick…tick…
As I write this, my 4.0 DVD set is in transit, and I should receive it in a couple of days. Thanks to my employer’s special rewards program…I didn’t have to pay a dime. Yay!

Happy New Year to all, and to all a good…listen? Watch? Whatever. WOOHOO! I am really looking forward to the DVD and the documentary! Thanks for the update!!!

@ Sandra: in another reply on another blog post, Bear posted that a concert in Germany is in fact a possibility. Here’s hoping that the concert anouncement is going to be for Germany. (me being from The Netherlands)

AintItCool just reviewed the DVD set and mentions the music doc:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39669

Picked up 4.0 after school this morning.

Stu-
Your trained bear really makes great calliope music, even though it’s fairly irritating and superfluous.

After MB Gordy’s instruction in your documentary, I’m ready to join the Battlestar band’s tour on the taiko drums.

I’m concerned, though, that there aren’t enough woods in LA for all the genuine sentiment in this show.

The best line has to be, “I thought it was just Eddie banging on shit on set.”
Jill

ps I’m glad to see you have a John Tesh album on your wall. A few years ago, I unfortunately lost a t-shrit of him-it was a caricature of him with dreds and it said “Snoop Teshy-Tesh.”

The James Callis portion of the doc is worth the cost of season 4.0 alone. ‘Nuff said.

Had a 20 minute window between leaving work early and getting to my Dr’s appt. Got the Best Buy exclusive edition (Starbuck dog tags and an nice little book with all the characters) and made it to the Dr’s with time to spare!

It was the first thing we watched, and it was great to hear ALL the word as at the concert there was so much laughter it was hard to make out what was being said at times. BRAVO to all.

Just got through watching the documentary…HILARIOUS! Especially loved the scene w/ James.
I’m so glad this was added to the DVD set.

MattH… “Everyone complaining about the price of the half season DVD set should be satisfied now”…

I saw all the comments on Amazon about this. I can totally understand why people are upset, but the reality is that they’re only spending an extra $20 or $25, and the alternative is having to wait an extra 6 months or a year before seeing anything on DVD. It’s a bummer that seasons 2 and 4 were split up, but this show is worth it.

Starlit Voyager… “However, I wonder if you have considered the idea of an arranged album also.”…

All my soundtracks are basically already concept albums already. Virtually no cue is exactly the same as it was on the air. I combine them into suites, revise them and perfect them in ways I didn’t have time to do for the dub date deadline. I frequently record album versions at the same time as I do the episode as well, knowing that I’ll eventually put them into a record.

Pearl…

Hi Pearl! It was nice chatting with a fellow BG fan while I was waiting for my plane. (And I did make my flight by the way, just in time!) I’m hoping to bring the band out to NY sometime soon, although it’s likely it’ll have to be 2010.

Sandra and Thomas…

A European concert IS happening. Expect an announcement on the blog here in a couple days. :)

Yikes!!!! Good eyes. But, I must admit that the studio with John Tesh on the wall ISN’T MY STUDIO. We filmed all the studio scenes at MB Gordy’s studio (he played on one of Tesh’s records). The last scene of the movie was filmed at my actual studio, which is a bit smaller (and you can see REST STOP and WRONG TURN 2 posters on the wall).

I didn’t realize that potentially millions of people would assume I have a frakkin’ John Tesh gold album on my studio wall, to inspire me as I score “Battlestar Galactica.” :) That’s hilarious…

-Bear

It was hilarious. Not at all what I was expecting. XD

This is not meant to be a gripe or anything, just a question: are you planning on a “serious” behind the music documentary at some point?

I really wish I could have gone to the CD signing, unfortunately I had other plans.

I hope you get to go to the Cast and Crew Frak Party on the 16th/17th !!!

I had my hopes up when you mentioned a Concert, now I find it’s not in the LA area.

The Roxy was fantastic.

So Say We All,

OneBuckFilms

Bet you anything Tesh would find that hilarious too. Because you can hear his influence loud and clear in all of your work… ;D I used to work for a syndicated soft rock radio show that used a lot of his instrumentals as music beds under callers, and I have to say, there’s not much difference between his cover songs and your cover songs. You probably get that a lot, lol.

I also got a kick out of Raya’s short and angry appearance.

Bear…”It’s a bummer that seasons 2 and 4 were split up, but this show is worth it.”

I totally agree, it’s definitely worth it. :)

jangoisbaddest7 mentioned a “serious” documentary. While I loved the comical one I would also really enjoy a more serious one and maybe some concert footage!

Not all that recent or rare a phenomenon. For just one example, Jerome Moross:

I have a perfectly good kidney I could trade for a cast frak party entrance ticket !!

For future arranged albums, are there any chances
to get new suites of themes/motives not covered in a continuous single track already, like the B section of the Roslin and Adama Love theme? :)

Regarding different recorded versions for cd and show:
In the Pegasus Episode the piece “Lords of Kobol” sounds different than the album release. Did you record those two versions together or the album version later?
(By the way it would be great to get that unreleased piece someday, i think it has a great flow and even a different instrumentation with that up and down chord)

Well I just found out that Danny Elfman will score the new Terminator film.

*sigh*

I love Elfman’s stuff (first Batman movie FTW!) but was hoping that a certain person around here would get a shot at it.

Meh, I gave up on Terminator movies after 3. 1 and 2 were great. 3…let’s just say ingrown toenails are anticipated with greater joy.

Unless it’s made by the people who make TSCC, I’m going to have to stay home and Windex the driveway gravel that night.

Hi Bear,

I just bought the Terminator: TSCC today and it’s really, really amazing piece of music. I remember one day watching the show, I was thinking how you could capture precisely the dynamics and beats of the original terminator themes and reinvent them into new and exciting direction. I could also hear some cues, very similar to BSG, that blend perfectly with the rest of the score. The last 1 minute and 20 seconds of track 12 – “Prisoners of War” is just explosive.

Keep up the good work and continue to amaze and excite us with your music.

Hello everyone and hello Bear. I haven’t had the chance to check out the new season 4 dvd but I’m REALLY glad that you’re putting this other dvd with it so we can see who else helps out with this AMAZING FRAK’IN music. I’m hoping the season 4 soundtrack is released soon too. This music is just totally awesome, I don’t know how you do it, or where you come up with so many ideas. My thanks to your staff for your incredible efforts. I hope to see all of you perform in the Baltimore / Washington DC area sometime.

in addition.. I’m hijacking the thread here a little so please forgive all..Bear, I emailed you the other day about “other songs” and you said to check the blog in a few days..how is that part going so far ? I emailed you on the 7th.

So Say We All,

Marc

Westminster, Maryland

Marc…

Thanks for the reminder. The “other songs” post just went up.

daveCFPrez…

So many people have sent me this link to AintItCool where some fanboys are wishing I would score T4, that I figure I should at least post it here:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39715

And while I’m linking over to AICN, they’re giving away 5 signed SCC CDs:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39731

Jangoisbaddest… “This is not meant to be a gripe or anything, just a question: are you planning on a “serious” behind the music documentary at some point?”

Point (not gripe) taken. Yes, Matthew and I have been collaborating on a serious documentary on the BG score for about a year now. With any luck, it’ll get released this year. To be honest with you, it won’t be as entertaining as the funny one, but will be more enlightening.

It’s on YOUTUBE. Get it while it lasts.

http://galacticasitrep.blogspot.com/2009/01/inside-secrets-of-behind-making-of.html

I’ve seen the documentary. (thanks to youtube) It was rather funny I must say, especially Michael Hogan’s “sound effects” crack me up. I liked the little (not so subtle) reference to the end of Lay Down Your Burdens pt. 2 too.
I’d love to see that serious documentary though once it’s completed. That will be quite interesting.

On a completely different subject: Are there, at this time, any plans to release some further sheet music (apart from Battlestar Sonatica that is) in the future? it’d be great to just follow the notes of the different instruments while listening to Violence & Variations for example.

PS: That link to the YOUTUBE version was not meant to be an endorsement of the fact that it’s been pirated. Most of my work has been pirated at one point or another, which doesn’t thrill me. :)

Still, in this case, those of you who can’t watch the North American region DVDs can finally check it out.

-Bear

Blagh, as usual, R4 dvds have no real special features..
Oh well, there’s youtube.

This documentary was a fucking hilarious surprise. Thanks!
