    Comic Con Schedule 2010

Posted by Bear McCreary on July 19th, 2010

It’s that time of year again!  Comic Con is finally upon us.  After the intense Music of Battlestar Galactica concerts at the House of Blues last year, I’m perfectly content just to roam the convention and take it easy this year.  So, if you see a dude walking around with dark hair and a goatee, it’s either me… or maybe Ron Moore.  :)

However, I will be making a few appearances, including two panels and a CD signing.  So, track me down and say hi, especially if you’re a frequent blog follower.

    Thursday July 22

    “Caprica, Battlestar and Beyond”

    12 -1pm
    Room 6A

Hosted by actor / author Richard Hatch (Tom Zarek, Capt. Apollo, So Say We All), this panel features composer Bear McCreary (Battlestar, Eureka, Caprica), producer / writer Michael Taylor (Battlestar, Caprica, Star Trek), science consultant Kevin Grazier (Battlestar, Eureka), and special guests. Richard and the panelists will proide reviews, discussion, and Q&A of Caprica, Battlestar Galactica, and the upcoming BSG movie, including trailers.

This panel will also feature the world premiere live concert music video of “Wander My Friends,” performed by The Battlestar Galactica Orchestra!

    La-La Land Records CD Signing

    4 – 5pm
La-La Land Records Booth (housed at Toy Hungry booth #429)

I will be signing all my La-La Land CDs including Battlestar Galactica Seasons 1 – 4, Caprica, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Wrong Turn 2, Rest Stop: Don’t Look Back and Eureka.

    Friday July 23

    The Cape

    2:15 – 3:15
    Room 6A

San Diego Comic-Con fans will get an exclusive look at the pilot episode of NBC’s newest super hero drama  “The Cape.” Debuting on NBC midseason in the 2010-2011 season, “The Cape” shows us “One man can make a difference”… when Vince Faraday, an honest cop on a corrupt police force, is framed for murder and presumed killed, he assumes the identity of his son’s favorite comic book superhero – The Cape – to reclaim his name, family and city from the ruthless ARK Corporation and the masked villain known as Chess.

Moderated by Jonah Weiland (Comicbookresources.com) in a Q&A session with the cast – David Lyons (ER), Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), James Frain (True Blood), Dorian Missick (Six Degrees), Keith David (Gamer), Vinnie Jones (X-Men: Last Stand), Martin Klebba (Pirates of the Caribbean) – and from the production team– Creator / Executive ProducerTom Wheeler (Empire)Composer Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica)Showrunner / Executive Producer John Wirth (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles).  All attendees will receive a limited edition comic with cover art by superstar artist John Cassady created especially for Comic-Con 2010!

And yes… this means I’m scoring The Cape.  :)  Come down and check out the pilot, or catch up with me at the signing afterwards to learn more about this exciting new series.

    Other Fun Stuff

    CAPRICA

Friday July 23, 11:30 – 12:30. Ballroom 20 - Syfy presents an exclusive glimpse into the future of humanity. Featuring Alessandra Torresani (Zoe Graystone), Sasha Roiz (Sam Adama), Ronald D. Moore (co-creator/executive producer), and David Eick (executive producer) and moderated by Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times.

    EUREKA

Friday July 23, 8:45 – 10:45pm.  Room 6A – At a combined screening with Haven, check out one of the best episodes of Eureka ever created, before it airs!  This one features an exceptionally percussive score too, one that almost takes the show into BSG territory.  You guys will really enjoy it.

Saturday July 24, 3:00 – 5:00, Room 6BCF – A combined panel with Warehouse 13, featuring Colin Ferguson (Jack Carter), Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Allison Blake), Neil Grayston (Douglas Fargo), James Callis (Grant), Jaime Paglia (co-creator / executive producer / writer), and Bruce Miller (executive producer / writer).

    SOCOM 4

At the SONY booth on the convention floor, look for the kiosk featuring SOCOM 4.  You can play through the first level of the game, and get a first-listen to my gamelan / orchestral hybrid score.

    DARK VOID

I will be doing a webcast interview with CAPCOM, discussing all things Dark Void, Dark Void Zero and why my hard-drives are labelled with Mega Man characters.  You can submit interview questions over at Capcom-Unity.com.

    MYSTERY PROJECT??

There’s another new project I’m working on that is presenting a panel at Comic Con.  This panel may (or may not) announce my involvement at the screening.  In the meantime, I can only tease you guys with the knowledge that I’ll be lurking around during the screening, just to watch audience reaction while the footage plays.  But rest assured, this project is frakkin’ amazing and you’re all in for a real treat when it’s finally released.

    See you in San Diego!

Wait wait wait! Bear! You’re gonna be scoring Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? When did this happen?!

    Hahaha. Rampant, unfounded speculation…

I don’t get to SDCC enough to catch the BSG panel. *Tears hair out* I am SOO bummed about this and have spent many nights trying to figure out how I can make it, but until they clone people or invent time travel it’s just not possible.

Please post photos! Hope I get to run into you at the con :)!!

Ah man, that’s just torturing us! :)

“Wait wait wait! Bear! You’re gonna be scoring Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? When did this happen?!

    Hahaha. Rampant, unfounded speculation…”

    Can I pre-order the CD? :)
If only it were true. That would be epic…

Looking forward to getting the CD’s I wasn’t able to bring last year signed. Also, will the “Wander My Friends” music video be available for download on iTunes?

    See you there!

If the Secret Mystery Project isn’t Game of Thrones I’m blowing myself out the frakkin’ airlock.

Oh dear lords ! How useless to be french when so much is going on on the other side of the ocean !
Will you eventually play or, you know, just come here in a bright and hopeful future ? I wanted so bad to be in Tenerife, but plane tickets aren’t cheap…
Are there any news of Caprica ? Syfy doesn’t seem to be eager to announce Season 2…

    Some exciting news in here:
Bear is scoring The Cape. COOL!
BSG Movie?? Oh really? *eyebrow raised* It damn well better be a Bear McCreary score. I don’t care if Williams/Elfman/Horner want to do it. It won’t be BSG unless it is McCreary.

Although it appears that it is going to be a reimagining of the 70s version rather than based of Ron Moore’s version:
    http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/08/13/bryan-singer-battlestar-galactica-movie/

I am bummed about that I think. The modern BSG is so complete and the finale is quite final that I suppose it leaves little room for expansion. Still…

I want Bear to score it. :)

(And frakking congrats on the Emmy nomination!)

    -Sam

I hope that the avoided answer to my recent Game of Thrones question may have something to do with the mystery project or at least means that nothing definite has decided yet but that you are in the closer round of composers but cant comment until a final decicion ;)

George RR Martin posted on his Blog about the composer selection process. He says they are close to the final decision out of a round of interviewed composers…

Kind of off-topic, but are you going to do any blogging on the scores for the new Eureka episodes? I was really hoping to hear about the premiere, at least. I absolutely digged (dug? was hip to?) the 40s-style version of the cues.

Yeah I’d like to know what’s up with Caprica as well. There’s no hope for it at the Galactica BBS.

I was hoping the mystery project would be the Avengers but then I realized they haven’t actually filmed any of that yet so that’s out of the question.

    Maybe it’s Thor? :P

Supposedly, Patrick Doyle will be scoring “Thor” (Branagh’s regular composer). Maybe “Captain America”? That would be amazing…

Can you tell us which panel the mystery project might be announced at? I don’t want to miss it!

    Thank you!

    Sue

THE WALKING DEAD would be awesome, but perhaps Bear’s had his fill of post-apocalyptic-themed projects, right? Right? I seem to recall Frank Darabont’s been a fan of his ….

Summer Glau AND Bear McCreary? Arg! Another show I have to watch. Damn you!

    Hi Bear!

“This panel will also feature the world premiere live concert music video of “Wander My Friends,” performed by The Battlestar Galactica Orchestra!”

This is really great, but what about THE concert DVD, what you promised last year? I mean the last year’s House of Blues concerts. I was there on all three concerts of yours, and I really would like to remind all those frakkin’ unbelievable moments! I need this DVD!…

We’re waiting for it! And congrats on the Emmy nomination!

    Your hungarian friend,

    Ferenc

    @Gunga Din

It’d be a helluva step up from the clown that’s been scoring the latest Harry Potter films, that’s for sure.

Next year…I’ll buy the tickets for Comic Con and any concerts you may be doing the moment I can. ><

Laura and I will be wearing my handmade versions of the “Kara’s Coordinates” t-shirt, and, of course, our Cunning Hats. See you tomorrow!!

@jangoisbaddest7 i liked the last HP score :/

My first comic-con. I’m really excited. Wish I could be there Thursday for your panel, but hope to catch The Cape panel on Friday. Didn’t get a chance to say hi at the Friday HOB concert last year (which was amazing by the way) so I hope I get to see you there!

    Mystery project solved….

Okay, no one kill me! Just a little treat to pass the time until we get some Comic-Con Bear-mystery-project-solving news! My girlfriend made it for a little video challenge involving still objects — it features some familiar friends and familiar tunes by a familiar composer.

@ Cory, so did i, as a matter of fact i think it’s the most achieved one regarding music, john williams’ scores are boring!

@ jwstreet : “A Day at the Beach” is just brilliant, i think i’m in love with this cylon…

This secret project…it has to be Mass Effect 3! Please tell me Bioware finally realised that this game need more Battlestar-Galactica-esque epic music…Or you’re doing the next season of House? Both would be awesome!

Oh…I forgot: Step Up 3D?! Guess we sure can hear some really interesting music this august, can’t we?

Well from a musical point of view and concerning good film scoring in general the last HP soundtrack was complete garbage.

It provided no unity, only a collection of musical textures. The best usic was the underused Hedwig’s theme and the Quidditch Third Year theme in Ron’s Victory (both Williams music)
The choral piece was nice but not even used in the final film. Hooper had so few ideas that he even copied his two main themes form Order of the Phoenix and used them in the exact same arrangements (not on the soundtrack album)

The producers should never have used him in the Potter films, he is in no way talented enough…

    Hi Bear,

I know it’s a busy time for you, lots of stuff going on. Just wondering if we’re still going to get the follow-up CD soundtrack to Battlestar Galactica? This was going to be the CD that included many missing pieces from all four seasons of the series. Such gems as “Raptors vs Raiders” and the “Battle of the Ionian Nebula”.

I think a compilation CD of tracks not included on the previous soundtracks and handpicked by the fans would be a wonderful idea. It would really be a great chance for fans of your work to connect with and contribute to the making of another great CD.

A setup list of possible tracks with 30 second samples on a page where people could vote would be a fantastic idea.

I have been waiting years for some of your missing pieces. I hope that the effort to release them is still on-going. Too often unreleased music sits on a dusty shelf or in some file somewhere and is not being enjoyed by those who would adore it.

Please let us know whatever you can.

    Thanks,

    -Scott

Sadly 2010 is not a SDCC year for me (and my sister…), so I’ll be searching on every corner of the internet for the last bit of information about your projects.

I’m really interested on the ‘Misteryous Project’ and, if it’s not ask for too much, I really would like to be able to see the ‘Wander my Friends’ music video somewhere/how. And to all of you, fortunate people who will make it to the ComicCon, please, share your videos/pictures with the doomed!!!

    Bye,

    Yas

YES!!!!! I WAS RIGHT!!!!! (*Happy Happy Joy Joy Dance*)

My most anticipated show of the fall just got exponentially better!!!! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Myserty Project revealed! Frank Darabont just announced – I’m scoring The Walking Dead for AMC!

    vicmackey187…

Happy Happy Joy Joy Dance indeed!!

    Bear

Is it Darren Aronofsky’s re-make of Robo Cop. That’d be another robo drama to add to the list :P

Weee! I was going to watch “Walking Dead” anyways :)

Congrats, but i hope that you are still in consideration for Game of Thrones

Still waiting for an answer on that matter, i posted three or four blog posts over the last 3 months. I hope you just avoid to answer because you are in the last round of possible, considered GOT composers and can’t really talk about it right now.
I just want to know if its still on your radar or if you didnt try to get the gig or are out already?

The waiting is hard. HBO got an amazing cast, world class producers/crew/directors etc… and now just the composer misses.
You would be the perfect, the best choice

    Wishes

And by the way, IT’S a BIG congrats from me regarding Walking Dead. That show seems to become a huge success with its unique TV genre.

You scoring it is the cherry on top of the cake :))

This has to be a joke, a really GOOD joke, but I was already heavily looking forward to The Walking Dead, and now with this news, you’ve gotta be kidding! Congrats on that one, Bear.

& @ zenibuka: Thanks for the kind words! We’re glad you dug it!

Oh man oh man oh man! I can’t WAIT to hear what you do for The Walking Dead. I was so stoked to hear the awesome news that you were scoring this show.
I’m also looking very forward to The Cape!
Once again, congrats on all of the success!

They’ve posted highlights from the SDCC panel on the main website: http://www.amctv.com/originals/The-Walking-Dead/

Notice the crowd’s reaction when they announce Bear as the composer! Awesome.

Gotta say — I LOVED “The Cape”!!

    Hi everybody,

MattH posted a link to the SDCC panel talk, but sadly I couldn’t view it from my (Belgian) location.

However, some searching on youtube got me this link:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/TFAWvideos#p/u/1/_Sy1aW_PcRc
This is the second part of the panel talk (parts 1 and 3 are also posted on this youtube channel).

Anyway, please do check out the announcement of bear’s involvement and the crowd’s reaction at around the 4:30 mark.

    Elin

By now parts 4, 5 and 6 of the panel are also on Youtube. At the end of part 5 somebody asks a musical question and Bear has to come on stage. In part 6 you get Bear’s answer to the question.

Check them out on thse locations:

A nice text interview with the Bear, makes me even more anxious to hear SOCOM 4: http://www.originalsoundversion.com/?p=10972

    Hi everybody,

could someone please tell me that this is a hoax?

    http://livefeed.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/07/chuck-composer-to-score-human-target.html

In order to score “The Walking Dead”, Bear is leaving “Human Target”?

I’m guessing that scoring 5 (five!) TV shows simultaneously (count ‘em: Caprica, Eureka, Human Target, The Walking Dead, and The Cape) isn’t really possible, even for our favorite miracle worker.

But … Human Target? Really? … What? … Why?

    … I’m confused. o_O

Ouch! Please say it ain’t so. Of all the shows, Eureka would be hurt the least by a composer change. The damage to HT would be one of the highest, given how integral the score is.

I think we all agree that leaving Human Target SURE wasn’t Bear’s idea.

It reeks a lot like an executive decision, bringing in a new Showrunner (Matthew Miller), who, in turn, brings along his composer (Tim Jones), probably going “Hey, I know how we can save a LOT of the production costs…!”.

Add to this that FOX has put Human Target into the Friday night death slot (surefire decision, since they have a brilliant history of managing TV shows; Futurama, Firefly and T:TSCC come to mind…).

So, my guess is that it’s gonna be “Buckle your seatbelt Dorothy, cause Human Target is going “Bye-bye”!

Sorry, but this is really frustrating. :-(

Hey Bear, I didn’t see a response from you about the Extras CD that I brought up in my earlier post…

Is this indeed something we can look forward to? :-)

    -Scott

    Hello Bear!

I tried emailing your staff regarding this question, however I got the email back saying that there was no account.

I am driving from Montana to LA to see my grandmother. I was curious if there were any events planned for this month?

Thanks & So say we all!

    Jess

    Hi, Bear!

Sorry to miss you at Comic Con. There are just so many things to choose from. If I’d thought to check the blog in the craziness of preparation, I could possibly have made the La La Land Record booth on Thursday, but… alas. I did, however, make it on Sunday and finally got copies of both the “Eureka” and “Razor/Plan” cds.

Speaking of Eureka, I just finished watching Eureka 4.05 “Crossing Over” and I have to say, I really loved the sweet romance theme for Fargo and Claudia.

I’m so excited to hear you’re scoring The Cape! I think it looks like a great meat and potatoes superhero show. Is it your music in the promo?

    Cheers!

    ~ Saché

MattH… “Notice the crowd’s reaction when they announce Bear as the composer! Awesome.”

It was a pretty surreal experience for sure. The crowd went bonkers. Guess there were some people out there who knew who I am. :)

Scott… “Hey Bear, I didn’t see a response from you about the Extras CD that I brought up in my earlier post… Is this indeed something we can look forward to? :-)”

It’s still an option. I’ve gotta finish the HT album and get through a few more episodes of Walking Dead before I can think about a new BSG CD. But, yeah… I’m still hoping we can make it happen.

    -Bear

    Hi Bear,

Can’t wait to see the Walking Dead series and hear your music! I just saw the trailer and was wondering about the songs used in it because they’re really good… Do you know the band’s names? Will they be used in the series?

There are bands and companies that do nothing but trailer music – or mostly so. They have libraries that the movie/TV studios can use as they see fit. For example “Future World Music”, “Immediate Music” or “Two Steps From Hell”.

Yes, I know those compagnies, like X-Ray Dog & the ones you mention, but in this trailer, the opening frames are tracked with a dark rock song… and I want to know who it is. ^^

    Something to Say?
