See You at Comic Con! (UPDATED)

Posted by Bear McCreary on July 11th, 2008

    sd-72708-flyer-updated.jpg

Anyone going to Comic Con this year?

I’ll be among the 100,000 that take the pilgrimage to the Geek Mecca that is San Diego this July.  On Thursday July 24, I’ll be appearing on the Battlestar Galactica 30th Anniversary Panel (11:15 – 12:15, Room 6B), hosted by original Apollo / Tom Zarek himself, Richard Hatch!  The panel will also include Tom DeSanto and science advisor Kevin Grazier.  If you haven’t been to any of our recent Comic Con panels, you should definitely check it out.  Richard has some great footage to show, and we may screen some selections from my recent Music of Battlestar Galactica documentary.

And stick around until Sunday night, July 27th.  I will perform at an exclusive double-bill concert, featuring the Singers of Battlestar Galactica.  I’m playing with Raya Yarbrough and Brendan McCreary, in two sets of their own original material.  These artists frequently sing on my scores, but you can’t truly appreciate their talent until you’ve heard them perform their original songs (although, I wouldn’t be surprised if a few Galactica songs popped up in there as well… perhaps a Dylan cover?).  Other Galactica musicians, such as violin maestro Paul Cartwright and guitarist Steve Bartek will also share the stage.  And we’ll have some surprise Galactica guests as well!

The venue is Anthology, at 1337 India Street, about 10 blocks NW of the convention center.  It has a great atmosphere and is perfect for dinner.  It would also be the ideal opportunity to meet some of you loyal blog-readers face to face, so I hope you can check it out. See you then!

    So Say We All,

    -Bear

UPDATED 7-12: The last flyer had the wrong start times.  Show starts at 7:30pm sharp now!

    Cool !!!!

I hope I can make it for Sunday Night.

However, I will DEFINATELY see you in the Thursday session !!!

    Bear, please record it somehow!

Why are all the good events on the left coast!

I am planning to take my daughter to Gencon in Indy…..but that’s a whole different dynamic….

    Oh well….

If I weren’t on the other side of the country I would totally be there! Bear, will your Music of Battlestar Galactica documentary be made available soon?

    Great!

I just checked their website to see about tickets but there is nothing listed for the 27th… Is this a free event?

Actually, Me and my better half will be there on Sunday.

I enjoyed Brendan’s Band at the Galactica concert.

Sounds like a blast. Hopefully I can make it.

I checked the Anthology calendar of events for tickets and there is nothing for the 27th. Curious, is this concert part of Comic-con or are there separate tickets that will go on sale later?

    Hey guys…

I’m not sure why its not up on the Anthology website yet, but I’m sure it’ll be up there soon. It’s going to be an awesome show!

Road Trip! Drat…unfortunately, not so much…but I hope the place is packed and everyone has a great time!

I’ll be there with a few others! Hopefully we can get tickets OK!

I am very upset I will not be able to make it to the Sunday show!

Will you be at the BSG panel on Saturday?

I really want to come to this event, but it is pretty far away.

I was wondering if you could give me an idea of how many BSG songs would be played?

This is going to be awesome! I’m really glad to have an opportunity to see you, Brendan and Raya in concert after missing the previous concerts.

I hate to sound like a party pooper, but do you have an estimate of how long the concert will last? I need to plot out how to get back to my friend’s place on transit.

I’m soooo pi$$ed I’m not going… But SDCC has become so much more than a comic con these last handful of years…

    dave

    Barbara…

    I don’t think it’ll go much past 9:30 or 10pm.

Bear, I feel a little uncomfortable asking this but I noticed that your mesmerizing music for BSG was never nominated for an Emmy.

Now, if I’m not mistaken your score wasn’t included in this year’s proposals (the stuff Skiffy or whoever sends to the jury). So I was wondering why that is…

Btw, your CDs are the first I’ve bought in half a decade. Oh, and thanks for introducing me to Raya Yarbrough’s voice. :)

    Bear,

PLEASE tell me you’re pissed about the Emmys (again) this year.

They’re really a joke, and its a shame. I cannot comprehend a reason why your work wouldn’t be nominated. It makes ABSOLUTELY NO FRAKKING SENSE!

    Off topic… sorry…

I’ve got a question that I admit is a bit off topic. There’s also the fact that I’ve been meaning to ask it on this site for so long that I can’t remember if I’ve actually asked it and then forgotten. So here it is again, and this time I won’t forget to look for the answer:

In the soundtrack for Season 2 of BG, there is a song called “A Promise to Return” that gives me chills every single time I listen to it. I remember reading the leaflet’s paragraph commenting on how the violinist was severely injured shortly after recording. I always wonder now if he recovered okay. Not knowing where else really to look, maybe you could tell me if that obviously blessed man is all right again.

I can’t resist finishing by telling you that, in my humble opinion, the four most moving pieces I’ve heard from the show are “The Shape of Things to Come”, “A Promise to Return”, “Passacaglia”, and “Allegro”. You, sir, are an expert of the orchestra.

Just got my tix. See you, Brendan and Raya there Bear.

Man I wish I could be there. Just found that I need to be somewhere else this weekend. Hope everyone has a good time!

I have a couple questions about the season 3 soundtrack that I was hoping you could answer.

1)In Season 3,there is a bit of music playing when Adama and Lee are talking about going back to New Caprica. Its the conversation in the hallway where at the end they hug. Specifcally when Lee says,”We’ve lost sight of almost everything…” I have been trying to find that piece in this season and the other soundtracks. Can you tell me in which track its located?

2)All Along the Watchtower. Great piece. Loved it in the episode and on the soundtrack when it came out. I am not musically talented like you or some of the other posters here, but when I hear the song from the episode to the soundtrack it sounds a bit different. It sounds like it starts off with a different instrument(or key) in the episode than in the soundtrack and continues throughout the song. I was wondering that if this is the case, will that version ever be released?

Love the season 4 score so far. I find myself wishing for the season to be over already so the soundtrack will come out.

    Thanks!!

Lovely panel at Comic-Con yesterday. The videos were great, too. What a treat.

Sadly, I think the show might be sold out. Very “boo” moment. It would have been great to go.

I should be seeing all the BSG folks at Con again on Saturday. And the other thing I look forward to is the Buffy Sing Along on Sunday.

Re Buffy, I was ‘another vampire slayer’ for my Comic-Con nerd-out costume. What a bizarre, but very good, day.

    Cheers,
    Vil

Actually, the concert venue just called me and I’ve made my reservation.

    Very “yay” moment.

    Vil…

So glad you got tickets! I’m glad you were able to get tix, but let your friends know that they should get them soon.

The panel was a lot of fun. Doing Comic Con with Richard Hatch is always one of the highlights of the event for me.

    See you Sunday!

    -Bear

    Hello!
Oh, this is to Bear McCreary.

Thanks for the note. What a surprise. You read this. Read, present and past tense I mean.

Richard Hatch is funny, as the whole BSG crowd is, apparently. How could you do that video?! You two were killing us :). Acted much, have you?

(By the way, if you like funny things… see that movie with Ben Stiller… Thunder something. Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr. are in it. I got into the showing after watching Iron Man tonight! I laughed almost once every five minutes, and that’s a conservative estimate. And the soundtrack is *insanity*. Curious as to your view on it. Not beautiful, but a random collection of songs from everywhere, it seems.)

The video mockery was stunning and I must find it somewhere to show my friend who couldn’t make it. And, actually, to show myself periodically! Man, I totally would not have been able to control my laughter had I been the musician in question.

I’m surprised that you had fun at the convention. I was exhausted from the strange amount and quality of fun I had.

It’s like a parallel universe. My last grad school/academic conference was at the SD Convention Center! I didn’t attend as I was sick, but that fact eases me into accepting the whole thing as part of some very strange reality that pops or slides out of people … people like me and not like me!

Seriously, I have a picture with significant as hell BSG people. That shouldn’t happen. It’s a universe… er, a fleet, that I wouldn’t want to be part of (the show; again, I am just using my imagination. So many disclaimers this weekend!).

    To explain – I would *probably* (cringe-worthy assessment here) gravitate towards Baltar’s cult-harem – - -

But! I would do it out of academic interest and the longing for my ancient study of religion at long lost universities! Every student of Greek religion has called Zeus a serial rapist in pretty much that vocabulary zone. Including me. :D Big fun.

Tiredness aside, I am so happy that I got to go, and I was by a miracle given passes for Saturday and Sunday by a dear couple. I gave them Whole Foods fruit in a bag, which was not much given that I wanted a basket.

I am going on. Apologies. It was interesting to hear from you here! And very nice.

See you Sunday. I’m coming alone, but met two new potential friends today who had decided to go weeks ago, so I may actually have found west coast scifi viewing buddies. They are hard to find.

Anyhow, India Street is a cute area, lots of music and fountains. I guess I’ll add that to my cheerful little city. Quite contrast with Boston, etc.

Okay, really, I’m leaving. I do apologize about length. The window I’m typing in is deceptive. Slimming. :P

    Take care…

    Vil

Big thanks to everyone who came out for the show this weekend! We’ve got some big plans brewing for Comic Con next year, so hopefully we can do something like this again!

    Bear –

Are you planing to tour or record a “live” album sometime? Sorry if you have already talked about this, but it would be great to have the setlist you played live at Comic Con (or something similar) available for the masses! ITunes is a great way to sell virtual records these days….;-)

No, iTunes is not a great way to sell virtual records these days. It doesn’t run natively on Linux. Most files are full of lousy DRM. No Thanks.

Anthony – I just hope the music live or studio comes out in a consumable format that we can all access and enjoy. Bear is a true “soundtrack genius”. The one track I would love to see in a live paylist is “Prelude to War”. My Heavens, what a fantastic track! Thanks for the wonderful music Bear.

I wasn’t aware of this blog until the panel discussion at Comic Con on Thursday. My friend and I attended the performance at Anthology on Sunday night. I would like to thank you and your colleagues for performing. That was a real joy and a great way to close out our vacation. Please thank your fellow musicians for us.

Just saw Bear’s post about having big plans for CC next year. If you do a BSG soundtrack concert, I’ll buy my tickets right now…

So….did someone film this or collect some audio for those of us there in spirit, but not, perhaps in fact?

What a great show! I hope there’s a record you can all share w/ the rest of us.

The venue–it’s a very trendy restaurant oriented around a small stage–had a video system for showing the performance on a screen behind the musicians. It’s possible that they recorded it. But I did not see anybody else with a videocam and I imagine there’s all kinds of copyright issues. I took a few photos that came out okay, although the lighting was not great. I don’t think there’s any way to post them here.

What Inquiring Minds Want To Know is…how many hundreds of people also chanted “SO SAY WE ALL!” at Comic Con?

Stupid Seattle. Nothing ever happens here except earthquakes and rain and violent volcanic eruptions and governors overriding voters (see: Seahawks Stadium, which was voted down 3 times, but built anyway). And serial killers. We have the best serial killers in the world (outside of Germany)!!

No good comic-cons, though. LOTS of comic-cons, but no GOOD comic-cons.

Just serial killers and geologic terrorism :)

What I’m trying to say is, you should really tour. You could be rolling in Benjis!! Maybe roll them up and use them to bang those drums! “This song was recorded using a hollowed-out tree stump covered with leather-treated $100 bills, with drum sticks of lacquered and condensed $100 bills.”

When you’re on percocet, you have all KINDS of ideas. And some of them are bad.

    Pedda…

The Academy seems to ignore several talented people on Galactica, so I appreciate your comment. After all, this puts me in the same category as Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell! Since these two incredible leads have been snubbed year after year, there’s clearly a misunderstanding in the industry about what our show is. I think the fact that is a “remake” of a campy sci fi classic, some people still don’t want to recognize that this new version is a legitimate drama. An Emmy nod would, of course, be wonderful, but I’m really not expecting it to come for my work on Galactica, no matter how impressive it ever may become. That just seems to be the feeling of the nominating body right now…

    Morden…

    Questions…

1). “In Season 3,there is a bit of music playing when Adama and Lee are talking about going back to New Caprica.”

You’re not the first person to ask me about this. That cue was one of my personal favorites from the entire season. And honestly, it was one of the last ones I was forced to cut from the album due to time restrictions. Once the series ends, I’ll be putting together a series of CDs representing the material that didn’t make the cut on any album so far, and I can guarantee you that this one will be included.

2). Watchtower’s alternate “film version” mix will get released on the before-mentioned release as well.

“a series of CDs representing the material that didn’t make the cut on any album” WoW, I can’t wait for that!

Thanks! Those questions have been on my mind for a year. I thought I was just imagining things. lol. Congrats on the press coverage in the other post! BSG music really is great. I recently snagged another friend of mine to watch the show. Once again, he says what first drew him in was the music, now he’s hooked!

    Thanks again!
