    Caprica: Know Thy Enemy

    KNOW THY SPOILERS: Tonight’s “Caprica” introduces Tomas Vergis, the owner of the rival company that Daniel stole the MCP from in order to complete his U-87 project.  That decision finally comes back to haunt him, literally and figuratively, in Know Thy Enemy.

    Played brilliantly by John Pyper-Ferguson (recognize him as the Pegasus CAG Pegasus in “BSG” Season 2?), Vergis is a complex and interesting character.  He is clearly an antagonist, with his sights set on ruining Daniel Graystone and his company.  However, he is also a Tauron, and as such, is understandably motivated by vengeance for the two men who were killed in the theft, whose deaths he blames solely on Daniel.

    Clearly, Vergis needed his own theme, one that captured the various nuances of his personality and motivation.  You will hear glimpses of it throughout the episode, but it comes into play fully during the last scene, as he declares his intentions to Daniel.  This scene is the most “Galactica”-influenced of this entire series thus far, in my opinion.  Michael Nankin brought his brilliant directoral eye to the scene and allowed these two amazing actors to craft the scene at their own pace.  With all its various characters and subplots, “Caprica” moves pretty fast.  So, this deliberately paced scene was a real delight to score.

    An ominous pad first sneaks in as Vergis stands, taking off his coat.  I didn’t want to hit the moment too big, but definitely strove to underscore the tension and mystery.  Why was he taking his coat off?  Is he about to kick Daniel’s ass?  What’s going on?

    Then, as he reveals his tattoo, the first element of the Vergis theme sneaks in.  A harp, piano and gamelan ensemble play the Vergis Ostinato:

    It’s simple and repetitive, evocative of a folk song.  This was intentional, because I wanted the Vergis Theme to subtly reference his Tauron heritage.  This idea is cemented when the melody finally enters.  As Vergis steps closer, Chris Bleth plays the Vergis melody on a Chinese membrane flute:

    The only other time I’ve ever used the membrane flute in “Caprica” has been for the occasional statement of the Tauron Theme.  The sound of this unique instrument added cultural meaning and tension as we get our first glimpse of his heavily-tattooed arm.

    Vergis leans in very close, brewing with menace.  Here, the bass and low strings enter with a secondary thematic idea I call the Vergis Bass Line:

    Vergis puts his coat back on, now exuding the intimidating confidence of a Tauron mobster.  To drive this point home, Paul Cartwright picks up the Vergis Theme on the acoustic fiddle, an instrument reserved solely for Tauron-related melodies.  As Vergis says ”Eventually, I will destroy your company, but before that you have so many precious things,”  Chris Bleth’s membrane flute returns once more, to state a final version of the Vergis theme.

    Vergis leaves, and Daniel is now alone to contemplate this new turn of events.  A subtle version of the Daniel Ostinato begins in the harp, piano and gamelan:

    The intensity builds, as bigger and bigger percussion enters the arrangement, leading to the end of the episode:

    This scene was a lot of fun to score, but also lead to a bizarre experience that’s never happened before: I began to crave food in a scene!  In the process of scoring this scene, I probably watched it fifty times.  So, fifty times I witnessed Vergis raise his glass of bright, tangy orange juice into the sunlight and take a sip of it.  Director Michael Nankin and DP Stephen McNutt made this look like the most tasty, fresh and mouth-watering glass of orange juice in the history of fruit.  After about an hour of watching this scene, I noticed that the drink looked really refreshing.  By the end of the second hour, my mouth began watering the more I saw it.  Finally, I had to stop and go to the frakking store and buy some damn orange juice or I was going to go insane.

    So, in addition to being a great scene in a great episode, this sequence also functions as a perfect ad for orange juice.

    Other subplots, such as Joseph’s search for Tamara’s avatar, were explored a bit as well tonight.  They will be expanded upon in subsequent episodes, and lead us to some really interesting musical moments.  In the meantime, just keep drinking your “Caprica’s Finest” Brand Orange Juice!

    Though the episode was a bit slow, I think it was a good idea in order to established the rivalry between the two firms. I really loved the Vergis Theme and the character seems to be quite intriguing as well.

    I also loved to see James Marsters back on a good TV show. Good old Buffy days ;-) I wonder if he is gonna get his own theme. In the first scene, when he appears from behind the plastic curtain, there were a couple of notes, which sounded quite promising…

    And Bear, Im pretty sure there was some kind of alcohol in the orange juice, so maybe you can add that to your next scoring session. The result should be interesting… ;-)

    I tweeted this too, but Im curious as to whether or not anybody can find the two clear references to pre-existent Galactica stuff in the OJ logo. Bear, I know you are aware of one, but did you spot the second?

    Hmm… Caprica’s Finest = New Caprica Police? And the Caprican cityscape in the picture is the same from Battlestar’s opening credits.

    Pyper-Ferguson is a complex and interesting *actor.* I also recall him from his role n “Jeremiah,” and many other shows & movies. Good to see him cast so effectively in “Caprica.”

    I had conflicting reactions to details in this scene. While my reaction to the visual stimulus of the delicious-looking orange juice was much the same as yours, my reaction to the *sound* of the glasses being set down was… plastic glasses? These guys are among the richest individuals in all the Twelve Colonies and they’re drinking from PLASTIC GLASSES?

    I’m also hoping to see, at some point, a scene between Zoe and some ancestor of Felix Gaeta (“Look, little Felix looks just like his grandpa Pardus!”) But, for now, the budding V-relationship between Zoe and Philomon (DOCTOR Philomon!) is tantalizing. Can we expect a reprise of “Was Love” at some point?

    I really liked the Vergis theme here. It feels appropriately Tauron without coming close to being the Tauron theme, and it represents the mystery of Tomas Vergis’s plans well, too. And I totally agree about the orange juice. That last shot of Vergis drinking the juice made me think “Hmm, juice, I should go get some”. Weird.

    Although I love your music in general, the Vergis theme reminds me too much of the Dark Void Survivor Theme for some reason I can’t quite put down. Are they similar from a formal point of view?

    Great podcast, and I was totally wanting OJ as well. In fact, I have a funny musical idea to change the focus of that scene to the OJ, I’ll post back my results.

    I probably wouldn’t have thought of it, but for that I love OJ, and I haven’t gotten any in a while. Might get scurvy. “Can’t come in to work today, I’ve got scurvy” – Eddie Izzard.

    OMG this is hilarious. Bear, had you only used Laura’s Baptism from the moment Virgis stands to start showing his tattoos, we would have known how thirsty you were. :-)

    The scene totally becomes about the OJ, if you time it right, the first crescendo will happen when Virgis takes a nice tasty refreshing gulp of OJ. The second will be when Daniel thinks that OJ looked mighty refreshing himself. Better take a swig. The resolution happens at the start of the end credits.

    Totally works. Try it, it’s hilarious.

    Another excellent score. Now you got me craving orangejuice too.

    You know, I gotta say.

    “These two are orphans,” has to rank up there on my list of Top 10 BSG/Caprica lines close to the top.

    I have huge problems with story writing for the Amanda, Clarice, and especially Lacey, Zoe, and Keon/Barnabus subplots, but thanks so much for adding another musical theme!

    I remember Piper-Ferguson from an X-Files 2-parter and a really good film called “The House of Sand and Fog”; I was thrilled months ago when I heard he was cast.

    The sets, the acting, the story, and you bet your frakkin’ hind quarters, the MUSIC!!! All fantabulous! Keep it coming, Bear! I can take it!

    I have to be careful though….

    It seems that practically every show I like and get myself vested in gets cancelled. My Gods, please let this be the end of the curse!

    I like how you put the Clarice theme and the Greystone Ostinato on top of each other. Very cool! Interesting episode. It seemed to go back to the format of the first couple. (Bouncing between many different stories). A lot of interesting stuff happening, though!

    After reading that, I’m thirsty for orange juice too!

    For some reason I understood Vergis and Daniel to be drinking not just orange juice but mimosas… not sure why, except why else would you drink orange juice in a champagne flute? :)

    If you cue up Laura’s Baptism from the time Virgis takes off his coat, it’ll be less about Virgis and Daniel and more about yummy tasty OJ, oh-so-thirsty… :)

    The OJ Vergis Danny scene was my favorite of the whole episode. The music here was incredible. I immediately thought of BSG when I heard it so it was cool to read in your post above that you thought it was the most BSG influenced theme so far. It’s a great theme! And I really liked Vergis’s character. This is actually probably one of my favorite episodes yet. Starting with last weeks episode, things are really starting to pick up and get interesting, and the music is getting better and better! Now I’m going to listen to the podcast.

    I laughed out loud reading about the orange juice, but I remember thinking that same thing after only seeing it once! Multiplying that fifty more times is just mind-blowing.

    I particularily enjoyed the score on this episode, and you bring up fantastic points (as always). Looking forward to the next :)

    So, Andrew finally told me the other BSG reference in the logo. The font at the bottom is the same as the font on Joseph Adama’s lighter. Wow!

    Even my husband noticed it. He was like all “Ok, what am I looking for… ohhhh, tasty OJ.”

    I have one better than the Dark Side of the Rainbow though. It’s some home movies of my mom’s from when she was a kid. Somehow, it just works perfectly with Danny Elfman’s Batman soundtrack. We’ve tried others, but her family is like the Wayne family or something.

    Sorry, I do have a weakness for inappropriate soundtracks. It’s how I was raised.

    Aahahahaha wow the Laura’s Baptism + Orange juice thing works so hilariously perfectly I actually blacked out for a moment laughing when I tried it. Glorious. XD

    Can someone make a video of the Orange Juice bit with Laura’s Baptism? This sounds awesome and I want to see it! :)

    I’ll try and give it a go. It’s a bitch to sync up.. well, you know how that goes. But if I can get it right, comedy ensues. Anyone else, feel free to have a go. :)

    Ok, I’m playing around with various export options now. It’s not absolutely PERFECT, but it’s close enough for jazz. Daniel clearly gets very pensive about the OJ.

    Wow, that is pretty cool, plainsong. How did you figure that out? Even the cut to black lines up perfectly. The thing that’s great is that, aside from highlighting the OJ bit, the scene actually works pretty well as a straight re-score. The music doesn’t feel completely out of context for the scene. It isn’t what should be there, but it could work in an alternate universe I suppose. :)

    I just got inspired because the OJ made me thirsty, and then Bear said it in the podcast, and blogged it here. The one cue in the BSG ‘verse that totally suggests water is Laura’s Baptism. How it lined up – was just pure luck. It works, but towards the end it looks like Daniel is so pensive about the OJ. “Oh, I wanted OJ! I shouldn’t have any…well ok I’ll have some. Man that was good!”

    If Bear had used that, we would have known how thirsty he was. :)

    I forgot about the Podcasts. Have to check those out.

    Finally had a chance to check out your “Laura’s Baptism” / OJ mash-up. I gotta say it really works shockingly well. I especially like the minor strings ascending right as the camera pans up to Vergis’ face, before the drums kick in as he turns around. Until the OJ drinking, this is surprisingly only about 10% too melodramatic. It really could have worked!

    Of course, the huge swell on the gulp of OJ makes it hilariously awesome. Nice work.

    I know right, only slightly over-the-top, but works! And let’s not forget the taiko kick as Vergis adjusts his jacket. Because who doesn’t like a little taiko action when snapping their suit jackets into place? :)
