    Caprica: There Is Another Sky

Posted by Bear McCreary on February 26th, 2010

SPOILERS BEYOND: Tonight’s There is Another Sky is the first “Caprica” episode directed by Michael Nankin, whose “BSG” episodes brought me some of the best musical opportunities in that entire series (Someone to Watch Over Me, for example).  I assumed that he’d have some challenges for me in “Caprica,” and I was not disappointed.

Another Sky is unique because it’s the first to focus almost exclusively on the Taurons and the Adamas.  In addition to exploring the relationship between Willie and Joseph, we also learn a great deal more about Tamara, who finds herself in a V-World videogame called “New Cap City.”  She essentially has the Game Genie Code for Infinite Lives (if you know that reference, you’re probably my age or older).

This episode allowed me to push the boundaries of the score with new source music as well as several new themes.

Early in the episode, we follow Tamara into New Cap City.  This is a virtual re-creation of Caprica City, much like Grand Theft Auto’s Liberty City is a liberal recreation of New York.  David Eick and I felt strongly that this environment needed its own unique sound.  In addition to highlighting the city’s dark and dangerous vibe, we felt the score could help differentiate between the various settings this series now utilizes.  We wanted the character of the score to have a unique signature element for each of the major locales: the “real” Caprica City, the V-Club and New Cap City.

The intimate “chamber orchestra meets small percussion ensemble” sound of the series underscores our adventures in Caprica City.  The V-Club has clearly been defined by the thumping Captain Ahab remixes that all the kids seem to enjoy so much.  But, New Cap City presented a new challenge.

I wanted the score in New Cap City to have uniquely synthesized elements, to create the impression you’re actually hearing score to the game itself (as a newcomer to the videogame music industry myself, this was especially intriguing).  I introduced a distorted drum kit, electric bass and guitars as well as several layers of synthesizers, creating a retro-futuristic sound.  Our first New Cap City cue underscores Tamara’s entrance into the world:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I admit my approach teeters right on the brink of being really cheesy, but that’s where I wanted it, right on the edge.  The New Cap City score should evoke the feeling of a videogame soundtrack, and here I think it does.  Of course, the taikos and small percussion of “Caprica” are still there too, so its all unified, and doesn’t sound too different.

If the imagery and soundtrack of New Cap City feel familiar, then you’re really paying attention.  The Main Title sequence has included shots from New Cap City since the first episode.  And the distorted drum kit, guitar and bass are also present in the Main Title.  Since I wrote my first New Cap City sketches for the producers several months before actually scoring this episode, I knew that these sounds were on the horizon when I wrote the Main Title.  For the past three episodes, you had no idea why I added these industrial / metal elements to the “Caprica” title sequence.  Well, now you know.

However, there is more at work in that last audio clip than just rockin’ instrumentation.  Another Sky introduces another major character theme, the Tamara Theme:

At first this melody feels like it’s the New Cap City Theme, but throughout the episode it becomes more and more connected to Tamara’s story arc, which is clearly on its way to some interesting places.

In that first audio clip, her theme is played by Paul Cartwright on the electric violin, as it frequently is throughout the episode.  The violin represents her Tauron heritage and connection to her father, because the acoustic violin always plays the Tauron Theme.  However, running it through Paul’s amp and distortion effects represents the change Tamara has undergone and her new surroundings in New Cap City.

Tamara’s Theme reaches its full development during the bank vault heist.  Once she and Herecles get past the guards, he starts downloading the virtual money he believes will win the game.  I must confess, whether or not this guy we just met won the game was of absolutely zero interest to me, and I used the score to shift the focus away from the obvious foregound story in order to highlight the far more interesting subtext:  Tamara’s story.

Here, she is confused, lost and alone and doesn’t know whether or not Herecles is taking advantage of her.  But, she’s also thrilled by the theft, nervous, vulnerable and simultaneously invincible.  There’s a lot more going on in this scene than the videogame itself.  So, I underscored this moment with a powerful rendition of the Tamara Theme:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The arrangement includes all the signature elements of the New Cap City score (distorted drum kit, electric guitars, bass and synthesizers), but the Tamara melody soars above it, providing a powerful emotional undercurrent.

At the climax of her story line, she realizes that Vesta can’t help and asks Herecles to search for her father in the real world.  A plaintive English Horn solo of her theme underscores this emotional moment, picked up quickly by the flutes and harp:

Again, the signature New Cap City elements are always there, but when the focus is on the emotional narrative, I push them into the background.

Despite all the time and effort required for New Cap City and Tamara, they were not my greatest challenges in There is Another Sky.  No, that honor goes to the Tauron Ceremony Song used in the Joseph / Willie storyline.

Michael Nankin called me from the set last summer and let me know that the script called for a ceremony song to be sung in Tauron on camera.  The script had the lyrics, but no particular musical direction.  Once Nankin had cast the singer, I set out to write a song for her to sing on set.

With “BSG,” we had a tradition of score themes seeping into the narrative itself and becoming songs that the characters are aware of.  Why should “Caprica” be any different?  From the pilot, I had already firmly established the Tauron Theme as being the signature sound for the Taurons and their culture:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It makes perfect sense to me that this melody would have actually come from Tauron ritual, so I made it the cornerstone of the ceremony song.  However, in order to accommodate the lyrics by screenwriter Kath Lingenfelter, I had to alter the melody.  There were simply too many syllables in the text.  So, I created what I call the Tauron Ceremony Theme:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As with nearly every song I write for this show, there’s much more iceberg there that you’re not seeing.  I composed a complete song with multiple verses and a bridge, because I was unsure how much would actually be needed for the scene.  I hope that an eventual soundtrack album will have some room for this complete tune, because its really lovely.

However brief, its appearance in the ceremony scene adds another layer of authenticity and believability to Tauron society.  The actress who sang it did an amazing job and leant the performance a heavy gravitas:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In addition to the Tauron Theme, the Tauron Ceremony Theme and the Tamara Theme, there is one other melody associated with the Taurons, Joseph and Willie in particular: “Wander My Friends.”  While I try to avoid over-using the sole melody from “BSG” to carry over, I simply couldn’t resist using it here in this moment where father and son finally bond.  Did you guys pick up on it?

The text of the Ceremony Song is in ancient Greek (our substitute for Tauron), and the translation is quite beautiful:

These are the voices of those
Who have passed over the river heard
On the wind entwined with the
    Eternal and the everlasting
These are the voices of those whom
We have loved, who no more will suffer
Who have returned to the mud
This is the voice of the dead
Entwined with the eternal and the everlasting

Ironically, whenever I see these words now I can think of nothing but the gangster rap that Brendan and I made out of them for Reins of a Waterfall:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

There is Another Sky is an important milestone for both the series and my score.  We are finally branching away from the events in the pilot, with new themes and characters being introduced.  This episode will always have a special place in my memory because I was able to craft a traditional Tauron ritual song, and further connect my score and the world of the characters.  And I got to write some crazy videogame music too!

This was certainly a very interesting episode. I’m not so sure how well the pacing worked, it felt rather off to me, but the story itself was fascinating. The Tamara theme is absolutely beautiful, simultaneously fitting with the musical texture of Caprica while also branching off in a new direction. The ceremonial renditions of the Tauron theme worked very well, to the point of being almost heart-wrenching. I’m looking forward to even more! Now just another damn week to wait…

    Andrew

    Bear,

I think I may be the first to post on this, just want to say that you are doing a frakkin’ amazing job on this. Caprica is really building steam and I am really really liking this series, and it’s your music that is doing it for me! I loved this episode I really like where the characters are going!

I know this is off topic but I was watching the uncut version of “Daybreak” and I was wondering if there were any plans to release the”strip club” music that is playing during the flashbacks? I’m sure that in some way you or Brendan put that music out and I would love to see that on a CD! With all of the great source music you are doing for Caprica I think a lot of us would love to see that music on a CD! also I want to thank you in advance for signing CD’s for people that can’t be there tomorrow at the signing. I am a beginner in the world of orchestral music and it means a lot to me that you are signing my CD from afar! (LA to Colorado I guess isn’t that far!)

Haha, Game Genie. I loved that thing. Bring back codes!

Once again, you have outdone yourself, Mr. McCreary. This episode was fantastic. I saw Michael Nankin’s name and hoped he would let you come up with some great stuff, and I wasn’t disappointed. The vault safe was cool, I loved the electronic style for “New Cap City” and the final cue was transcendent. Yes, I just used that word. :)

I especially loved the Tauron chant set to the Tauron theme. Great touch. I haven’t even finished reading the blog post yet, I just couldn’t wait. I hope this episode gets a few tracks on the eventual soundtrack. My ears will appreciate it greatly!

Yeah!! definetly loved tonights episode, it just keeps getting more and more awesome!!…I Love it that you get to make CAPRICA, a really musical worls (:D)

Oh, and I agree about Herecles getting the money. It seemed about as pointless as Xbox gamerscore points, which I figured was intended.

By the way, it was kinda hard to miss “Wander My Friends”. :) I thought it was a beautiful tribute, and it fit the moment perfectly. We all had smiles on our faces tonight.

“While I try to avoid over-using the sole melody from “BSG” to carry over”

Are you forgetting the Baxter Sarno/Vice President Baltar theme already? (\”0)

I taped this ep too. To go back and listen more closely to the music, sure, but also… there is SO MUCH in this ep that’ll require closer examination. Sam Adama continues to be one of the most fascinating characters in this saga. Yes, he’s a gangster… by Caprican standards. But in the eyes of the Taurons, he’s – what? – a tribal warrior, maybe even something like a samurai – at any rate, a respected personage in the Tauron community in Caprica City.

    (\”/)

You know what is kick ass awesome? Watching Caprica and Human Target knowing I get to read the juicy explanation of how it was created. I don’t think there is anything out there in the ‘verse like this blog.

Bear, the Tauron theme is so haunting and beautiful, I love it so much. “Wander my Friends”…very nice touch.

Thank you again for sharing your creative process.

Edit: …the juicy explanation of how the music is created. Someday I hope be able to edit my posts so that when I am up late and eyes are crossing I am clearer! :-)

Love the New Cap City theme! It fit in so well with the diesel punk-ish thing they had going for it, visually.

And, “All That Remains”!!! That song is beautiful, have recognized it from the “Rest Stop” soundtrack. You used it – in a more subtle way – in BSG, in “Taking a Break from all Your Worries”, if I remember correctly.

Finally, rather off-topic, but “The Plan / Razor” soundtrack is AWESOME! “Apocalypse” is just… wow! Both the live and studio versions of it. Can’t believe it’s the last strictly BSG album. I keep hoping for a “Lost Tracks” albums or something like that. It’d be sweet…

“I simply couldn’t resist using it here in this moment where father and son finally bond. Did you guys pick up on it?”

Totally did, and while I’m still on the fence about caprica, these are the little moments that make the show worth watching for me!! ;) I know it’s not trying to be BSG and it shouldn’t, but though I’m admittedly undecided I found tonight’s episode really compelling.

Hah. Only now I noticed that the scroller saying “Welcome to New Cap City” is right there on the main title card, as is the war-zeppelin. You guys are sneaky.

What a great, great episode!! I think, everything has already been said: The Tamara Theme intrigued me right away. Can’t wait to hear all kind of variations of it hopefully in the future. The song of the ceremony got right under the skin and Wander My Friends fitted perfectly.

Concerning the show in general: I love the way Caprica City is pictured. The metropolitan flair with the sinful core under the surface of the bright lights. Reminds me a bit of Tokyo and though I havent been there, I imagine LA quite the same.

It is probably true that you can watch Caprica without BSG, but I think it is much more fun to know the BSG background. You see Zoe trapped in the cylon and you keep thinking if it is her who will eventually star the rebellion or Tamara… I guess eventually she will be downloaded into a cylon model as well. And she seems quite pissed already ;-)

So I’m really satisfied with Caprica so far. Musically this episode was really a milestone, Bear! Can’t wait for more!

Still waiting for Plazor CD to be shipped. Come on, Amazon…

    Daniel wrote:

And then there’s also Ben. Personally, I think it’ll be Ben’s avatar/soul which will be successfully duplicated and downloaded into the other 99,999 U-87 units, triggering the first war.
That said…I wonder if there will be another “everlasting” theme which will surface during this series, much like “AATW” did for BSG.

Hooray for using “All That Remains” again! I really like that song even though I’ve never seen Rest Stop. It worked really well for the scene too. Beyond that, this was simply the best Caprica episode yet and I’m really excited to see where it goes from here.

I thought the Tauron ceremony was done really well. It was haunting and emotional and adding lyrics to the Tauron theme was a nice touch. Also, can’t wait to get a full version of “Voices of the Dead Ha!”

LOVED this episode, was so new and different, new cap city rocked and everything about it was carefully designed, and the music was spot on.

DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT IN THE CAPRICA INTRO, THE SCENE WITH GREYSTONES FACTORY CHANGED, MORE CYLONS.. full swing production.. cool

great work bear, loved the Wander My Friends theme coming in at the end.. managed to make my eyes water a lil bit..

Just almost had a heart-attack from the excitement. I heard “All That Remains” just before Tamara sent the guy off to look for her family.

It was kinda hard to miss the Adama family theme. I love that it’s still getting used, but I keep getting frustrated by the appearences it makes in Caprica. It’s like musical torture, especially when you’re used to the shorter versions like Grand Old Lady and A Good Lighter which have an extra 8 or so bars of the theme. The two appearences so far don’t sound quite “finished” I keep expecting the rest of the first part of the melody to kick in.

The evolution of Tamara’s theme over the course of the episode was fantastic, from quiet and almost being beaten around by the drums and stuff to bold and angry.

Amazing episode, the show is really starting to get its own footing. The last four episodes were great, of course, but this one was much more interesting, I love Tamara, and everything was so very good. The music was fantastic, I especially love Tamara’s theme. And yeah, huge grin on my face when I heard “Wander My Friends”. It’s so good; so much good stuff to go on the album!

Also, for the Razor/Plan album…when will it be available on iTunes? It’s not in any store in my area, and I have a gift card for iTunes so I thought it would just be easy to get off there, but it’s not on there yet. Any idea? Please?

Wow, Caprica is really starting to take off! Best episode yet.

“I especially loved the Tauron chant set to the Tauron theme. Great touch.”
    -Johnny Boy

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. When the lady (I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Tsatti) was singing in Tauron, that was just haunting.

I’m just 18 but I exactly know what Game Genie is :D

Ah…I just read the part about who sang it. Somehow I missed that last night…

BulldogBSG: “DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT IN THE CAPRICA INTRO, THE SCENE WITH GREYSTONES FACTORY CHANGED, MORE CYLONS”

YES! I saw that, and wondered if it was just something I hadn’t noticed previously. Now I’m wondering if there’ll be other changes in the show’s title sequence as the story progresses (sort of like the different things Bart Simpson writes on the blackboard, but subtler).

    (\”?)

Okay, NOW Caprica has found it’s LEGS !!!

This was a GREAT episode, and I loved the traditional Tauron song !!!

Loved the new additions to the Tauron theme. This has been my favorite piece so far and this score put it at the top even more for me. I agree with everyone who is saying the show is finally starting to take off.
I will admit, I’m not loving any of the side characters as much as the main ones but I think it’s really gonna start getting better. I know that it can be viewed without having any knowledge of BSG but I have such high expectations for this series being that it is a prequel to the best show on television (IMO). It has some pretty big shoes to fill for me and it just hasn’t quite hooked me yet the way I was hoping. I’m still watching it mostly for the score which never dissapoints.

I will say even though the New Cap City story line was all a bit cheesy to me it was actually pretty cool. If I could imagine playing a virtual MMORPG, this is probably pretty close to what it would be like. The music in these scenes worked outstandingly well. And Tamara’s theme is beautiful.

Great episode, great score–Tamara’s theme might be my favorite thus far. Her story in this episode was exceptionally good, and the music matched that perfectly. =)

I got chills during the Tauron ritual song, and it’s always greatness when ‘Wander My Friends’ gets a chance to sneak in there.

Listening to these nifty audio clips just makes me want another full-blown Caprica soundtrack! Hopefully there’s one on the horizon.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with this blog; sometimes I read it with my laptop on top of the piano. Knowing about all the themes and having sufficient musical background to be able to play them adds a rather unique layer to watching an episode.

The Tauron theme is by far my favorite of the “Caprica” themes, but when I heard it as a song here, I wasn’t sure whether it was a good idea to lock it into a song for such a specific ceremony, because it had been used with a lot of variations in a number of different settings. On the other hand, one could argue that the theme has always been about the loss of Tamara and Shannon anyway, about the grief which is not likely to go away any time soon.

“Wander my Friends” sent me 58 years into the future for a few seconds, whereas the entire show has stayed fairly clear of BSG so far – the young Adama isn’t yet recognizable and the Cylon has been a refreshingly minor character. The theme always reminds me of the the “big picture” of events, and I think it felt slightly less jarring in the pilot, since I was watching it fresh from BSG, when I was not as involved in the rather distinct world of “Caprica”. However, such an effect may have been the intent here, although I agree with you that it should be used sparingly.

Bear, while I definitely agree “Wander my Friends” should not be overused, I am happy to see you’re still opting to use it in the perfect places. I only hope that someday we hear a fuller version of the rendition we heard in this episode, as it sounded absolutely fresh and beautiful.

Meowlin: Now I’m wondering if there’ll be other changes in the show’s title sequence as the story progresses..

ME TOO.. there has to be a new part to it, with Tamara becoming, pardon the pun, but virtually the queen of new cap city.. she will have a bigger role i bet.. maybe with the cylon’s rising up.. who knows, i would like to see a bart style change once in a while…. :)

    Mr. McCreary,

I wanted to thank you for taking the time to explain the soundtracks for the episode. They are insightful not just for the music, but how everything fits together.

I do have a question, I swear I keep hearing Gaeta’s Lament in the Tamara scenes. I’m I just imagining it?

The “Tauron Ceremony Song” just made me cry !! That’s a very beautiful song !! Great work like always :)

It just keeps getting better and better. I’m telling you – Music of Caprica CD. :)

And don’t let any Cylons chilling on earth, who may have smuggled some electricity source and a TV, see Daniel’s little speech or what he did to Zoe. We’ll have another invasion on our hands!

The music is getting better, the series is getting better. Just keep watching, world, we want this one to go on!

Haven’t watched the ep yet… going to tomorrow….but I had a thought about any potential album release.

    Either

-Do a 2-disc album, where 1 disc is score and 1 disc is “source” or “world of caprica” (or like Caprica’s greatest hits) music.

    or

Separate album releases for score and source music

Only reason I say this is because there seems to be such an abundance of both types of music, and I’ve noticed a lot of your Caprica entries seem to divide music up into these two camps (sometimes overlapping but not always).

Really liked this episode. Every episode has been better than the one before it! I loved the Tauron ceremony music, and liked what they did with the ceremony itself. Tamara’s Theme was a nice new bit of music to hear, and her storyline was interesting. I’m curious to see where it’s going.

So, Bear… I hope you are proud of yourself… I finally bought a keyboard. After having lots of dreams about playing the piano, after watching BSG or Caprica and reading the blog, I literally followed my dreams.

My musical knowledge is very little, but maybe good enough too fool around a little bit. I played violin for a some time a few years ago, but I sucked. Well, now I can’t wait to browse through the blog and see what I can make out of it ;-)

So thanks for the inspiration! Pretty sure Yamaha also says thanks ;-)

    Bear,

I have been a fan of your music since BSG season 1 but this is my first post.

I grew up playing the piano. Bach, Brahms, Chopin and the like were my composer heroes, though for a long time I have wondered what composer I can really respect in the modern age post-Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, and Shostakovich. I don’t think this will go to your head to tell you this, but I think you are writing the most interesting and worthy “classical” music of our time.

Props to the lady who sang Tauron Ceremony Song, and then I just about lost it when Wander My Friends crept in. With that, I couldn’t stay a silent reader of your blog anymore. Anyway, I’d love to chance to gush to you in person if I can attend one of your concerts one day, but please know how much I appreciate your work. Along with the brilliant writing, acting, and effects of each BSG/Caprica episode, I also look forward to each episode as a musical experience.

Yeah, I also started playing and composing music a year ago because of Bear’s music for BSG.

“While I try to avoid over-using the sole melody from “BSG” to carry over, I simply couldn’t resist using it here in this moment where father and son finally bond. Did you guys pick up on it?”

Frak, yeah! It’s one of the pivotal musical pieces in all of the BSG and Caprica music that brings tears to my eyes the second I hear it. Not necessarily because it is sad or I associate it with emotional scenes from the shows, but because it’s ABSOLUTELY beautiful in the truest sense of the word.

The Tauron ceremony was brilliantly scored. I just about lost it. And yes, I absolutely picked up on Wander My Friends. Simply wonderful. Yet another opportunity for the emmys to get it wrong, I’m sure (I watch a lot of TV…the only shows that have decent original scores are yours).

This was so much better than the other post-pilot eps, Mr. McCreary. And I don’t know if it’s just that I like the Adama family theme, but I enjoyed the music. Having that woman chant the Adama family theme was a great idea. I also enjoyed the video game music for its role in the episode (don’t know if I’d wanna listen to it on its own, though). Nicely done, but I’m so excited that the show finally seemed to return to the quality of the pilot; I LOVED the scenes with Daniel Graystone!

I didn’t quite notice it in the episode, but I’m glad you did a separate theme for Tamra. Why is it spelt “Tamara”, but no one pronounces it that way?

    Take care.

Great score for this episode, Bear. So many layers, themes and styles converging.

Was there a bit of a Raya song in there? I didn’t know that one and you didn’t mention it in the entry. Sounded lovely!

I frakking love Tamara’s Theme. It’s absolutely my favorite piece of music so far on this show. I can’t wait for the soundtrack album.

“Tamara’s Theme”? I thought you said you were planning on writing themes for the different families with variations on them, and not for individuals. ;) Anyway, good job as usual!

@penumbra That’s what I was wondering too! Has she finally made it into the Caprican charts?

I liked the use of “Wander My Friends” here, because the scene emotion reminded me of it’s first use in BSG (“A Good Lighter” in “Hand of God”)–an estranged Adama and son are reminded of how fragile life may be, and in that moment reconnect. Speaking of which, when are we gonna see Joseph’s lucky lighter? :)

Alllright now… Mr. McCreary? Since you let this one slip:

“The Main Title sequence has included shots from New Cap City since the first episode. And the distorted drum kit, guitar and bass are also present in the Main Title. ”

…Do you also have any spoilery intimate knowledge of whether or not that gravestone Zoe walks behind in the Main Title Sequence, might say “DANIEL” on it??? I just caught this today, but I cannot tell if it says “DANIEL” or possibly “FAMILIES”…???

The music of Caprica has been brilliant, by the way!

[...] Willie and Joseph was punctuated by the use of the Adamas theme from that series. Bear McCreary notes that he “couldn’t resist” using the melody in the scene, and I think that tells you something about how the show approaches its connection to BSG. There [...]

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE IFMCA WIN!!!!!!!! knew when i saw your name down as a nominee that you would win.. either for BSG or caprica

Bear, this episode may have been your best work on Caprica yet. I enjoyed how the Adama theme went from extradiagetic to diagetic in one fell swoop… something that BSG did every now and then too. :) I wasn’t surprised to see that Michael Nankin was the director, because he used your skills so masterfully in this episode as well as in “Someone to Watch Over Me” in BSG.

And, I really appreciate how you and your musical posse are working so hard to establish a musical palette for the world of Caprica. “Caprica Abides”, Tauron gangsta rap, a Tauron ritual tattooing/farewell song, Caprican dance music, V-club music – you name it, the show is so much better with you as the composer. And it’s pretty good as it is!

    Hey Bear,

After watching this awesome latest episode the musical score really popped out at me. The pieces you wrote for the Tauron ceremony were both incredible and beautiful. I’ve always enjoyed the Tauron theme but it really came alive here coupled with the scene. I eagerly look forward to another Caprica soundtrack release in the not-to-distant future :)

    Hi Bear,

So far this episode is my favorite. And I found the episode had the quality of some of the best BSG episodes. I am looking forward to the rest of episodes to see what the Caprica team and you come up with.

The Tauron themes at the end were beautiful and quite emotional. The “Wander My Friends” was very noticeable and appropriate for the scene. I was more taken with the ceremonial song.

In the clip you provide here of the song at about 18-20 seconds into the song the vocal has a few bars of a lower note melody that I think you have used before in BSG, but used it more as a background theme, it has an ominous tone to it. That melody is what got me more so than the “Wander” theme because it was familar to me ( from BSG). It felt like I learned some ancient history, that some BSG theme was really an old Tauron hymn from a hundred years ago. It added a richness to the scene and it kind of foreshadows the dark future that is to come in Caprica. You may not have intended that to happen but that is what I got out it. Great Stuff.

I hope most of this music of this episode makes on the Caprica Season One CD.

    Take care,

    Chris

    Couple things on my mind;

I can’t believe no one has yet suggested that TAMARA IS NEO, and New Cap city is the new Matrix. And it is frakkin SWEET.

Best episode ever. No offense to Jeffrey Reiner, he’s great, but Michael Nankin needs to start directing every episode so they can all be this good.

real-world Herecles is a little wimp, I wanted him to take Joseph into v-world and reunite with his now cyber-punk bad ass daughter, but instead he just got nervous and ran away! What was dumb was that you could kind of tell when Joseph was chasing him that he had good intentions practically begging for help yet STILL he ran. Douche-bag!

it occurred to me during the show how odd it must be for this young actress playing tamara to be so jolly with this fat sweaty actor like hes a kid… wonder if she was uncomfortable… I would be that guy was a creeper, no offense to him I’m sure it was makeup and wardrobe probably a really nice guy!

I also think that the rock William Adama threw at that kid making fun of him at the creek, would probably have killed the kid. It was freaking huge. From like 15 feet away! Sad it didn’t though, racist!

You know Mooquu, I was getting a lot of Matrix vibes myself from “Sky”, and I actually started to get those back in BSG whenever they projected.

What I like is that Adama temper! I mean you can trace the threads back and see that considering how he was raised, The Old Man saying “Walk out of here, while you still can.” is showing a world of restraint. I mean EJO totally let us see that, but now you can see the family dynamic. Everyone in the Adama family is just spectacular. Can’t wait to see the EJO directed episodes.

    Bear,

I just wanted to mention how much I love all of the music you’ve created for both Carprica and BSG. I think everyone would agree that either show would be so much less than they are without your beautifully, haunting melodies to complete them.

Please keep doing what you do – for a very frakkin long time.

    Bear,

Every week, I look forward to watching Caprica and then reading your blog. This week, I am very behind and just watched this episode. The score was awesome as usual, but I must mention the Tauron ceremony.

The incidental music pulled me in. When the grandmother started singing, tears began. During the tattooing part, wow. Your score just yanked on the emotions that the actors/writers/director were tugging on. I am not ashamed to say that when the William/Lee theme (aka Wander my Friends) started playing, I broke down.

I listen to the BSG scores at work constantly and cannot wait to add Caprica to my collection.

    Thanks.

M104… “I know this is off topic but I was watching the uncut version of “Daybreak” and I was wondering if there were any plans to release the”strip club” music that is playing during the flashbacks?”

Yes, I’m considering it. Those were cool pieces.

ExquisiteAgony… “And, “All That Remains”!!! That song is beautiful, have recognized it from the “Rest Stop” soundtrack. You used it – in a more subtle way – in BSG, in “Taking a Break from all Your Worries”, if I remember correctly.”

Yeah, pretty cool right? Another neat little source music reference to the BSG world… and the Rest Stop universe???

blasterboy606… “Also, for the Razor/Plan album…when will it be available on iTunes?”

    Soon. I promise. Soon!!!

The Livewire… “I do have a question, I swear I keep hearing Gaeta’s Lament in the Tamara scenes. Am I just imagining it?”

    Yes.

Daniel… “So, Bear… I hope you are proud of yourself… I finally bought a keyboard. After having lots of dreams about playing the piano, after watching BSG or Caprica and reading the blog, I literally followed my dreams.”

    Wonderful news! Go for it…

Muldfeld… “Why is it spelt “Tamara”, but no one pronounces it that way?”

Its a cylon conspiracy. In the last episode, Ellen Tigh and Dirk Benedict arrive in a space ship and proclaim that everyone must drop a syllable from their names, thus sparking the first Cylon War… oops, I should have marked that “SPOILER ALERT!”

Rian… ““Tamara’s Theme”? I thought you said you were planning on writing themes for the different families with variations on them, and not for individuals. ;) ”

Yup, that’s what I said. I guess plans change. :)

    -Bear

Harvey Midnight… “…Do you also have any spoilery intimate knowledge of whether or not that gravestone Zoe walks behind in the Main Title Sequence, might say “DANIEL” on it???”

I didn’t pick up on that, actually. Interesting theory.

bulldog BSG… “CONGRATULATIONS ON THE IFMCA WIN!!!!!!!! knew when i saw your name down as a nominee that you would win.. either for BSG or caprica”

I know, amazing right? I never thought I’d win because my votes would be split between BSG4 and the Caprica pilot.

plainsong… “Can’t wait to see the EJO directed episodes.”

You’re going to have to wait a long time. He didn’t direct any, at least in Season 1.

    -Bear

Hey! He said in an interview that he did, or was slated to… ok, load up the pitchforks. Or better yet, phone up Sam. He doesn’t play. ;)

Bear: “Game Genie Code for Infinite Lives (if you know that reference, you’re probably my age or older)”

I totally got that reference and yes, I’m your age. Game Genie… Those were good times…

The whole ceremony had me right on the edge of crying, but when Wander, My Friends kicked in I just totally lost it and sobbed. Good frakkin’ work. ;)
