BSG: The Plan/Razor CD Release Tues., Signing Sat.

Posted by Bear McCreary on February 21st, 2010

This Tuesday, February 23rd, La-La Land Records will release the final “canon” Battlestar Galactica soundtrack: Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and Razor. This unique compilation, representing the two straight-to-DVD scores that were left off the Season 4 soundtrack album, will complete any BSG fan’s collection.

To celebrate this, and the recent release of Dark Void’s original video game soundtrack, I’m doing a CD signing of both records this Saturday at Dark Delicacies!

    DARK DELICACIES
    4213 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505
    Saturday, February  27th, 2010 at 2pm

If you want to learn more about the thematic development in these two films, check out my original blog entries for Razor and The Plan. They detail my compositional process and identify the major theme unique to each movie.  And, in case you missed it before, here’s a great behind-the-scenes video of my session with Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, recording the theme from “The Plan.”

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

BSG: The Plan and Razor will eventually be available on iTunes as well.  My sources tell me this should happen on Tuesday.  However, considering my luck with iTunes lately, it will more likely occur sometime before the sun expands and envelopes the planet.  :)  Seriously, though… an iTunes release is imminent.

Literally years in the making, this album contains music I wrote before and after the tracks on the Season 4 album, making it the perfect, book-ending companion piece.  I hope you enjoy this album as much as I did making it, and I’m eager to hear what you think of it.  I know you have all been waiting patiently for this for years.  The wait is almost over!  :)

    So Say We All!

I’m going to be the first to place my order, I swear it to the Gods. I already have my signed Battlestar Sonatica score and all albums, but SOON THIS TOO SHALL BE MINE!!! BUWAHAHA!

By the way Bear, speaking of that sonata, I’ve been reviewing the harmony and MAN… Bbmin(maj7), Dmin, Bbmin(maj7), G#min(maj7), E7(lydian b7)… You know your modes my friend, and you know them well. Bravo. That moving of a min(maj7) chord down a major third to another minor chord just gives me SHIVERS.

Also, I’ve had the damn Caprica main theme stuck in my head for days, I’ve been humming it back non-stop! Your a sneaky bastard :) just kidding lol good job

    -Mooquu

@Bear: Great clips, I’m very excited to hear the whole album. Thanks for an awesome musical ride. And I’m loving “Caprica” and “Human Target!” I hope those get albums too :-)

@Mooquu: Right there with you! I’ve had “Caprica” and “Gaeta’s Lament” stuck in my head the past few days.

    –Brian

PS: Anyone else catch the “Colonial Anthem” bit in the latest “Caprica” episode? It was during the Cylon diagnostic scene when the tech is radio surfing. Nice touch Bear (or sound editors!) :-)

Still no clue…. is The Plan End Credits on the album???

Too sad if it were not…

@Eisselmann: The first track! Though I remember Bear saying he had infused it with a bit of rock for the album version.

@Mooquu: I placed my order last week for both cds, so I doubt you’ll be the first. ;)

I finally got up off my astrum (laid up as it is, no thanks to two bulging discs, for almost an entire month now…not to mention a gouty foot) ans pre-ordered last night. So the only thing going through my mind is:

    tick…tick…tick….

Ack! Bummer that they are no longer taking orders for Dark Void. Shipping is also out of my range for The Plan/Razor! I wish I lived in CA!

    Anyway great music as always!

Well, I’m not sure if something was different about it, but Dark Void was actually available for PRE-ORDER on iTunes and I was able to download it at midnight on Tuesday, so that release was impressively timely.

Still no sign of this album, but I’m keeping my hopes up.

So cool! The music is so cool!

And after Amazon let me down (it seems that Razor/The Plan will be released in may in Europe), I’m definitely going to order my copy from Dark Delicacies.

Thx for those great sneak peeks ! On Friday I will order asap from LaLaLand website ! The journey for the BSG music is almost complete !!!

Just pre-ordered The Plan/Razor OST from DD but missed out on the Dark Void pre-order. :( It would be super awesome to have an autograph version of DV but at least I have a copy to listen to.
Events like this really make me wish I lived in CA!

These samples are incredible, I can’t wait for this soundtrack!

I cannot wait until Saturday !!!

A few people from the BSG fan club I’m a part of are also coming down, as well as a few others.

I’m bringing down my replacement BSG S4 CD, and will get Razor/The Plan and Dark Void on site to keep my Block of Signed BSG up to date !!!

    Coolbeans !!!!

I just cancelled my Amazon order for this one – BONUS – it will be signed and personalized – Thanks Bear!

I wish you would do a concert in Tennessee sometime. ;-)

And about that unreleased music from the show…

I can’t wait to hear the soundtrack! Getting another one this soon after Dark Void is a real treat, though I must admit a part of me doesn’t want it to come just yet. The music of BSG has been such a huge part of my life over the past couple of years, and if this is indeed the last soundtrack (I sure hope we still get that disc of left-out cues and a BSG Orchestra one) then it will really be the end of an era. I’m glad to be able to get it signed by you as well (Too bad they sold out of dark void!). I think I’m looking forward to Husker in Combat more then anything, though thats probably because I’ve played the BSG Orchestra version of Apocalypse to death. I imagine I’ll be playing renditions of it to death even more though =).

Right now its #7 on Amazon’s movie charts and #99 in music, which is an astounding feat for the soundtrack to a made for TV movie and a direct to DVD feature, not some big budget hollywood blockbuster. It speaks of the quality of your work, and I’m glad to see its doing well.

I look forward to hearing the album, and I fervently hope this won’t be the last Galactica goodness we have in store!

I will be in Ventura working a roller derby bout around that time. :-( Otherwise myself and the little Shark Finn would be there.

I am glad to get it through the website at least!

You know what ? At first when I glanced at this post I thought ” frak, wouldn’t it be cool to have just a little taste of this to listen to, since I can’t order it yet “. But Whoa…there are some samples..hmmmm…most frakkin excellent. So I decided to check out a few of them and I realized..wait..you don’t want to listen to them all do ya ? Then you won’t have that ” surprise ” element like you do when you get the actual CD. I stopped around the ” Husker ” song.

What a tough decision..Kind of a frakkin tease in both directions if you ask me. Do I want to listen to those samples, now..or wait …ughhh !!!!

    So Say We All

Please tell me that the first several copies of the CD from the La La Land website are signed by you, Mr. McCreary. If not, you could be saving me a few dollars by ordering it domestically from amazon.ca.

    Thanks!

I was lucky enough to see “Razor” at the Times Square Lowes Theater when it was first released on DVD. When I hear the theme to “Razor” I get goosebumps every time. I can feel Pegasus looming huge on the big screen as Kendra finally arrives at Scorpion Fleet Shipyards. I guess that says it all. By the by, Battlestar on the big screen is an experience like no other.

Sorry I’m so behind the curve, but I just picked up Dark Void…and it is absolutely great. My favorite part is most of the way through the Survivor Camp Combat music, when everything goes quiet except for those plucked instruments that I can’t seem to recognize. Amazing work on that disc, Mr. Bear. I can’t stop humming themes from DV now!

    Hey Bear,

Your work is absolutely amazing! Is there going to be any chance that this new album is going to be released on iTunes Tomorrow…well i mean like at 12pm? I cant wait to hear the new stuff! Honestly there is no chance that anyone better could have scored battlestar better than you did!!!

Sorry for the double post but i meant 12am lol

    Hey Bear!
Thanks for the sneak peeks! I’ve been a huge fan of yours since BSG Season 1, and I just have to say that your music just keeps getting several times better with every single release! I can’t honestly say that about any other composer, so keep up the good work!!
I wish I could go to the signing, but I’m stuck at USC at classes. haha

Will the album be available internationally on iTunes? I’d be great if this happened, but I’m not getting my hopes up :(

    I can’t wait for this!

Bear, the samples are giving me eargasm’s!

Just a heads up….this is the situation over at Amazon, maybe it’s just cause it’s the first day?

    Temporarily out of stock.
Order now and we’ll deliver when available. We’ll e-mail you with an estimated delivery date as soon as we have more information. Your account will only be charged when we ship the item.

Amazon doesn’t have it for shipping or download…local bestbuy doesn’t have any…itunes doesn’t have it…

    frak!

    Bear -

Looking forward to receiving this CD. I got 1 day shipping on it ( for $4 from amazon) so I’m quite excited. At least – I’m supposed to receive it tomorrow.

Was wondering – has there been any development for a DVD / CD for the concerts in San Diego? I think that these DVDs / CDs would “really” complete any BSG compilation! I think I speak for quite a few others when I say we’re looking forward to those CDs as well!

I’m with everyone else the soundtrack isn’t available in my area till march. :(

i’ve tried amazon, target, bestbuy, itunes and walmart. no one has it :(

thanks for the samples. love the opening to “the plan” the final 5 theme sounds so eerie

Has anyone had any luck in getting a physical copy??

I’ve tried the same venues as paulm84, but with no luck. Since I’m in NYC, I’ve even called J&R Music, which had Season 4 on the release date, but they don’t have it either.

I wound up ordering one from Barnes and Noble, which said that they were expecting 4 copies, but they’re not in yet. Really? 4 copies for an entire store?

Anyway, if anyone manages to find a store that sells it, can you please let the rest of us know? It’s torture to have had to wait this long for the release and then get no satisfaction when it comes! I’m sure it will be worth the wait…but still!

I seem to remember no one had the season 4 soundtrack in the Boston area, but at least Amazon had it, this time NO ONE has the soundtrack at all it seems. I can’t wait so I just ordered a copy from Dark Delicacies so I hope they ship it out ASAP!! Oh well……

“Husker In Combat” and the “Apocalypse” tracks were the ones I have been wanting the most for quite some time. :D The samples were great.

One question. Were you scoring the music to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles while you scored Razor?

Great news! Dark Delicacies is going to order more Dark Void CDs. You guys ordered so many they ran out, but now there will be more…

Darnit, I read this blog post before I was supposed to head to bed. Now I’m too pumped from those music samples!

Hmm, I pre-ordered from Amazon a month ago, and still haven’t gotten a confirmation for shipping, though it still says the estimated delivery is tomorrow. I might die from anticipation. Seriously. I would even buy a track or two from iTunes if it was available, just to hold me until the CD gets here.

I don’t suppose there’s any point in staying up until midnight tonight for an iTunes release. I’m sure it’ll show up one of these days. Can’t wait, BTW! Really enjoyed the Dark Void soundtrack and I don’t even play video games. But really, I’m most excited about the music I’ve been hearing on Caprica, especially Brendan’s songs. Can’t wait to hear a full version of that ancient Greek hip-hop track.

I hope they have some Dark Void CDs at the signing, because I already picked up The Plan/Razor CD at Amoeba today.

BTW, The Plan/Razor is a great release. I’m loving the Apocalypse variations !!!

    Hurrah! Mine’s been shipped!

What the frak!!! I’ve been to four different stores in NYC and NONE has a copy of The Plan/Razor soundtrack. Checked ITunes and various other sites and I found nothing. I’m about to blow my lid. I’d start a Cylon Nuclear Attack right now if I could. That’s right, I’d obliterate human civilization if it meant I could hear your music right now, Bear. Oh man, for this and various other reasons this was the worst Tuesday I’ve had in years. Thanks for nothing, Earth. If that’s your real name.

Shipped from lalaland. Hopefully signed by Bear !

I need patience for 2 to 4 weeks until it arrives ….

Yay, mine is on its way-ish. Should get it tomorrow or Thursday. Amazon kinda took their time with this one, though. I wonder what happened.

Hm. Amazon just shipped the Dark Void soundtrack, but Razor / The Plan is still being prepped for shipping. Even though I’m pretty sure I opted for them to be collected in a single shipment.

Oh, well. Doesn’t seem like they’ve added anything to the total cost, at least.

And now, if only EA/Bioware could get around to releasing the CD-version of the Mass Effect 2 soundtrack, I figure I’d get my fix of game-related soundtracks for the foreseeable future (yes, I know download is the wave of the future, but I’m old-school, I like my music on physical media). Jack Wall is a pretty interesting composer.

I ordered Dark Void and Razor/The Plan from Amazon. Waited all this time, only for them to only ship Dark Void. There’s a hold on Razor/The Plan even though it’s listed as in stock. AND it won’t let me cancel. I should have waited Dark Delicacies.

plainsong@ “I ordered Dark Void and Razor/The Plan from Amazon. Waited all this time, only for them to only ship Dark Void. There’s a hold on Razor/The Plan even though it’s listed as in stock. AND it won’t let me cancel. I should have waited Dark Delicacies.”

I’m in the same boat as you, Amazon shipped Dark Void late, I didn’t get it till last night and Amazon won’t let me cancel Razor/The Plan, but I’m still getting a signed copy of Razor/The Plan from Bear. Dark Void is incredible by the way! (real late to the party with that :)

The wait is killing me, but to get a signed copy it will be worth it (and Dark void signed too! That means an extra copy to give as a gift to a friend!).

Its still not on itunes (Big suprise there right? They don’t have the latest album from world famous afro-beat artist bear McCreary?). I think someone needs to set a grizzly bear loose on their campus. Maybe they would get the message then? Unfortunately, my Grizzly bear is my bodyguard and I just won’t be getting up Apple’s way anytime soon.

Amazon has next day shipping available again[thank the gods]. Should have mine tomorrow.

Seriously thou, lalaland needs to get on the ball with this kind of stuff. Its been quite a while since I’ve felt the sting of being denied tunes on a release date and I didn’t even pre-order. I cant imagine how those who opted for release date shipping felt. :(

Someone call for a grizzly bear?

My Dark Void was shipped but my Razor/Plan was held. What the hell? At least I know it is worth waiting for.

    Sue :-)

Thank the Gods – I didn’t preorder, but on a whim I stopped by Silver Platters on my lunch break and found, to my surprise, that they had a copy! So I’ve been rocking out to Apocolypse all morning. I know, I know, going to a physical store, so old fashioned – but it worked!

This album’s somewhere between Season 3 and Season 4 (my two previous favorites, in that order) in terms of my enjoyment, which is pretty appropriate given that most of the material is from somewhere between Season 3 and Season 4 :)

Still rocking out these samples until I receive my copy from Dark Delicacies, lol. I’m going to frakking love this album. If it shows up on iTunes, I’m probably going to purchase there as well because I can’t wait to hear it full. Just from listening to the samples, its amazing at how well the music from both films work together.

How does the personalized autographs work if you order from DD? Do you sign it to our first name that is on the order? Just curious, as I did not specify anything specific in the order.

Hey, all … I just ordered from B&N, and they are having a sale thru tomorrow (Thursday) where you can get 1 CD for $8.99 — there was Razor/The Plan!! The coupon code is: H8L4W3N. Now I just have to wait … I got 2-3 day shipping so we’ll see when it actually arrives.

Thanks for the clips, Bear! The Season 4 CDs are still in regular rotation, but it’s exciting to finally get the last piece of your amazing “Galactica” work. Hope you’ll announce some concerts soon.

Bear, let me ask you something if I may, you have already signed copies of the DARK DELICACIES stock, and they already ship it? Cause they just took money from my credit card, and if they ship it already, that would be soooo great!!!

If anyone finds a digital download of the soundtrack please post it here :)
So far I only found offers for physical copies

I know the second I order a copy from a website, it’s gonna appear on itunes.

Ive been checking iTunes, torrent sites, Amazon mp3 Store, Youtube…EVERYWHERE. This has turned me into the nerdy equivalent of a crackhead.

All I have to say is this: Dark Void Zero isn’t on itunes yet, and Bear is still an afro-beat artist.

I wouldn’t hold your breath. The wait is killing me. Its sad too, I would probably buy it again if i could get it immediately (or at least some songs), but I guess ill have to wait for the CD from Dark Delicacies.

I’m turning into a nerdy crackhead too. BSG Music > Drugs

    . . . [hits head on table] . . . delay. . . losing mind here.

@ campbellcomplex: Sweet! Glad to know I am not the only one.

I’m with Capbellcomplex and Duckey, I’ve been twitching like a junkie since yesterday. At first I loved the samples, but now they’re like musical torture. I had my entire afternoon today planned around this CD but that didn’t happen and I’ve been settled somewhere around depression in the 5 stages.

I cancelled my order with Amazon, they told me that my delivery estimate was March 25th… MARCH… that’s ridiculous, I had Dark Void imported through Amazon and it didn’t take over a month for shipping (I had that by the 17th). I ended up ordering from CDWow because apparently they a) had it in stock and would ship it within 24 hours and b) it was about £8 cheaper. Hmm… I think I may have just moved on to anger a little bit there.

I’d happily settle for being able to listen to the whole of Apocalypse… at least for a little while *Hint hint* Please, please share the genocide music :D

@ jonathondezlalour: Ahhh yes, I’ve been twitching too.

I ordered it tuesday on amazon.com, and i just received the shipping mail. I will receive it in 1 week, (in the “expedited international shipping” mode, it’s my usual delivery time – i’m in France).

I really wait it, but -with luck-, the french blu-ray edition of BSG presents the score in bonus : 24 tracks for Razor and 31 for The Plan (check the middle of this page : http://www.battlestargalactica-online.com/bsg_forum/ftopic3124-272.php (“the fifth” posts)). I suppose all of you guys knew that, but i think it’s a must have for all Bear’s fans (and it’s a DTS HD Master Audio mix !).

Please excuse my sooo bad english. -_-

(PS : Bear, it’s perhaps a true stupid fanboy attitude, but I have to say this : you are a genius, you will be one of the more influential composer of the XXIst century. Elmer would be proud of you, and you are the real son of the global music of the 20th century, from Glass to Williams, with an incredible mastery of an ethnic and popular legacy. Thanks. Thanks for all.)

I cant wait to get my hands on this track, ive been to a few stores now and theres nothing on iTunes.

    To everyone…

Hey gang, looks like some of the orders got delayed. These things happen, I guess. Bummer. It will be out very soon, I know. Keep checking around. All I can say is that I promise the album will be worth the hassle and the wait.

Muldfeld… “Please tell me that the first several copies of the CD from the La La Land website are signed by you, Mr. McCreary.”

They will be. If you moved fast enough, it should be signed.

Fizwidget… “Will the album be available internationally on iTunes? I’d be great if this happened, but I’m not getting my hopes up :(”

Are my other albums international yet? If so, then it will be. If not, they will all be internationally available eventually.

AeroAlx… “Was wondering – has there been any development for a DVD / CD for the concerts in San Diego?”

Actually, there HAS been. Its not going to be a straight up DVD of the whole show, but a place where you guys could get a bunch more songs as a bonus feature. Keep your fingers crossed that this works out. I’ll let you know ASAP if it comes together.

    -Bear

Oh my God. I feel like a huge geek but if I don’t get my hands on a copy of that music soon…I’m going to snap!
I’ve ordered from Amazon…but I have an 8 hr drive ahead of me, and I’d pay for it again to download it on iTunes…or anything.

Ordered my signed copy from La La Land yesterday at 3:16 Eastern! Yeah!

My copy of Razor/The Plan has shipped! It’s amazing what a little bit of good news can do for a guy’s day. I should have it at some point in the next 2 to 5 days. My neighbours are gonna hate me so much when I get this CD.

Amazon just delivered mine! (Fedex, actually)
    Listening to it now.
    Very much worth the wait.
    Thanks, Bear.
    And Amazon.

    Hey Bear,

I’ll actually be in the area on Sat (though I live in Tucson), so I’m hoping to stop by the signing…thing is, even though I preordered, the new CD’s arriving next week! You probably only want to sign the new stuff, but I hope it’s cool if I bring my Season 4 CD instead! :(

bjswift… ” You probably only want to sign the new stuff, but I hope it’s cool if I bring my Season 4 CD instead! :(”

I’ll sign your season 4 if you pick up a Dark Void as well. How’s that? :)

    -Bear

Darkdel may want you to buy something from them in order to get in — they’ve done that in the past.

Dark Delicacies usually want you to purchase one of the featured products, then you get a number/ticket that will let you in.

You can bring in anything you like to be signed.

I’ll be bringing in the following:

    - Dark Void (to be purchased from Dark Del)
    - BSG: The Plan / Razor (I hope you don’t mind signing both sides of the cover Bear :-)
    - BSG: Season 4 (Replacement for the mess I made of the last copy :-( )

BTW, I’m wearing the WTF (What The Frak) T-Shirt, just for that added geeky touch !!!

    A few tips:

    - Get there a little early, as parking can be interesting around there.
    - Get the CD and Ticket ahead of time, again, be early to avoid the crowds.
    - For CDs, only bring in the inside covers themselves in a small bag. It’ll speed things up.
    - Bring a bottle of water and sunscreen, you may be waiting outside for a bit.
    - Have fun, and talk to the people around you. Most of your fellow fans/collectors are great people !!!
    - When looking for directions, also figure out lunch or dinner plans in advance. Or wing it and go to the sports bar down the road, but it is a littlbe bit of a dive.

    OneBuckFilms-

You left something out. Dont forget to say hi to the ominous smoking fellow with a beard dressed in black with a camera around his neck. I like putting faces to names.

    Will do, AndrewCraig.

Got mine from Amazon today. What a great addition to my BSG playlist this is going to be. Headphones on all night while my wife watches TV and I rock out to the music!

PhilipW, trust me when I tell you, The Plan/Razor simply DEMANDS a Subwoofer :)

My car LITERALLY rocked when I cranked the volume up.

Just got my copy from Barnes & Noble and I was pretty much blown away.

Before I go into my review, I have to apologize to Bear. I organized my tracks by movie instead of in the sequence you placed them on the album. I’m just a little OCD that way. =)

The first thing I noticed was the difference in Apocalypse. Scott Ian certainly added an awesome touch to it. I didn’t think it could get any more powerful than it already was, but surprise! The rest of The Plan was great. For a movie that was primarily based around archive footage, there wasn’t a ton to do, but as usual Bear made it work.

While the music of The Plan was much more intense, I think I enjoyed Razor a little bit more since it felt more like an actual soundtrack. That was obviously due to the fact that there was more material to work with since it was an entirely new movie. My only regret is that Husker In Combat wasn’t longer. That was one of my favorites!

This is definitely a must-have for any BSG/Bear fan. Thank you again Bear for a terrific end to an outstanding series!

OneBuck… “Dark Delicacies usually want you to purchase one of the featured products, then you get a number/ticket that will let you in.”

Thanks for the EXCELLENT words of wisdom for anyone planning on coming to Dark Del. You’re a pro, dude.

BTW, I’m glad the little shipping snafu is getting worked out and you guys are getting your discs! Hope you enjoy this record…

    -Bear

I got an email notification today that my order for “BSG: The Plan/Razor” and “Dark Void” has shipped! I would have liked to order them both from Dark Del but the cost was considerably more than buying it on Amazon. I do, after all, have to get it shipped over to Australia, so the shipping charges are a pain. Nonetheless, I can’t wait to get my hands on these cd’s! Also, I think if I’m going to get something signed, I’d prefer to meet the person signing it, so perhaps someday in the future this will happen. I’m going to lobby the organizers of Australia’s biggest pop-culture expo, Supanova, to bring you out next year Bear! Last year they brought out Katee Sackhoff, which was amazing, but I know that you would draw a major crowd too. Hope all you folks heading down to Dark Del have a great day!

    No probs, bear. :)

Yup, mine is now shipped. Now just waiting for it to find me in the wilds of Espoo, hoping that the mail forwarding thing works.

Dagnabbit, I always remember there was something more to say AFTER hitting submit!

Anyways, for any Finns lurking here, BSG is starting on KINOtv I believe on Monday the 8th of March. Remember how Nelonen (who owns KINO) just stopped showing BSG after season 2, promised season 3 was coming, then removed all mention of it from their site? Well the clips are showing the storming of New Caprica, so they have season 3 and are apparently planning to show it this time.

Will they show anything past that? Who knows? I remember when SubTV made a big deal about showing TNG – which according to them ends after season 2. But if you need your fix and don’t have the DVDs or BluRays, the Grand Old Lady is sailing again!

Hey, iTunes has some more of your scores, Bear: T:SCC, and another one, either Eureka or one of the Rest Stop scores. I don’t remember if Rest Stop was there before.. Strange that Dark Void Zero and the Plan/Razor are still MIA.

Really cool thing that the La-La Land folks did–I got their email update today, which promo’d Bear and another composer signing at Dark Del. The cool part is they promoted both The Plan/Razor AND Dark Void, the latter of which is actually the product of a different company and not one of their cd’s…

    Robbman -

I agree. I get the impression they are a class act company that is about the music and not about the money, which I like. If you notice, all of Bears albums have been much longer than the average album release that I have seen. Now, I’m not sure if there are monetary considerations (if you have to pay extra for a length over like say 45 minutes… I never understood why some film scores are so ridiculously short even when the film itself is running time of 3 hours… Star Trek movies have a LOT of music but the albums are mostly around 40-45 minutes) or just the decision of the artist, but I just get the feeling it is dictated by the label.

One other thing Bear… listening to the album….The Hybrid Awaits… was the rhythmic groove in the guitars supposed to sound like the Watchtower eighth-note groove on purpose or is that just a coincidence?

    musicpaladin2007,

I think I can explain something as to why some score CDs are short.

Hollywood is a bit of a Union town to say the least, and the unions for the musicians demand a lot of money for film score CD releases, in 15 minute blocks, multiplied by the number of musicians who perfomed on a given piece.

Since the film music market is actually rather small and specialized, and these fees have to be paid up-front, it becomes cost prohibitive to release and 60-70min+ score, especially if there are something like 80-105 musicians, often with choir and soloists, all multiplying the costs.

Bear tends to use far smaller ensembles, at the most 20-35 musicians, and mostly between 4-8 players (I’m guessing) along with samples and overlayed sessions for the drums (1-2 players), which makes it both cheaper to make, as well as cheaper to release.

There are occasional exceptions, of course, such as the original Star Wars scores, which were recorded in England, and not subject to Hollywood union fees.

Considering the small returns of most scores, and the large numbner of musicians, the only way to get a CD in general release at all is often with short score CDs, around 30-35 minutes.

The Star Trek (2009) score was only 41 minutes long, and the choir has been left off of many cues for this very reason.

    robbman,

From what I’ve seen, and the people I’ve briefly met at the CD signings, LaLaLand is actually a pretty small, hardcore company, and they are definately fans as much as they are producers.

I’ve been told that the profit margins for a specialist label like FSM/SAE, Varese Sarabande, Intrada and LaLaLand are very low, and everyone in that business is there for the love of the music.

Still nuffink on iTunes and Amazon Germany promises me a delivery in 2-3 months. Amazon US it is then – it’s cheaper to ship it to Germany than to buy the CD in Germany, too. I hope I’ll have it in the next 2 weeks, can’t wait to dream away to your music!

    Thanks, Bear!

Sweet soundtrack Bear. I love all the razor tracks. I’m just a bit disappointed the music playing as simon was committing suicide/bumping uglies wasn’t on. How come you didn’t include it? Will you ever release it or is this it for the battlestar project?

In no was was the soundtrack dissapointing though – I just played through the whole cd from start to finish – so serene. I haven’t seen any battlestar episodes in a while but its definitely the music that brings me back. Awesome job Bear!

I just went to the signing today and got the album–top quality soundtrack music as always, and flawless presentation! But best of all, I got to meet Bear and Raya! They’re wonderful people, really cool, and I’d love to go to future BSG-related events. Looking forward to hearing about your upcoming video game, Bear!

@Bear, The Plan/Razor is awesome! I love “Arriving at Pegasus” and “Husker in Combat”. It’s too bad Darkdel ran out of Dark Void CDs — I’d been waiting all month to get it at the signing — but I filled out their form so I guess I’ll get it in a week or two. Thanks for signing my CD :)

Good to see you here, rlkitterman.

    I had fun.

I got my The Plan/Razor CD from Amazon. While the disc is absolutely brilliant, I am upset that I didn’t know I could get an autographed one in time. To top it off, the jewel case is SMASHED!

Finally got a chance to hear it at last today, much to my delight. Of course, i fraking love it!

Apocalypse sounded better then ever, and I certainly noticed the difference. It was cool to hear the instrumental versions too (so thats where what you added in the BSG Orchestra track played…).

Attack on the scorpion fleet shipyards was probably my second-favorite. Brilliant scene, and I could hear the difference between it and the Razor end credits – good job! You captured it perfectly!

I found “The Hybrid Awaits” to be a very interesting track, especially since it was something I never noticed during Razor. The entire time, I get this feeling that its trying to become the final four theme, but it never reaches it. Its unfinished, trying to reach that point. Just as the Hybrid is incomplete, so is the music, and its brilliant.

Husker in Combat is my favorite track on the album, absolutely fantastic. An epic taiko battle cue, and an incorporation of the classic galactica theme in one song? How can it get better?

Good soundtrack, rather on the quiet, reflective side, but thats not necessarily bad at all. It certainly makes me miss the show and the lack of new music (But Caprica is making up for it quite nicely). I just really, really REALLY hope that this isn’t the end. I want to hear not only the BSG Orchestra tracks (I hope what you mentioned comes through!) but that CD of extra tracks. I’ve had my list of suggestions typed out and ready for months, just waiting for you to ask us!

In conclusion, I’m loving the soundtrack, and I hope there’s more to come!

P.S. – Thanks for signing it and Dark Void! That gives me four signed CD’s. Someday I hope I can meet ya in person and get my dear, overused, utterly ragged Season 1 cover signed!

I finally got my cd from Amazon, and have been listening to it for the past few hours. I love all the music- there are parts I never heard in the movies, and as others have mentioned, “Husker in Combat” especially is a great listen. The versions of Apocalypse are great, and I love how you included the live version in full CD quality. The iTunes mp3 just didn’t cut it. Thanks for composing such a great score!

So who else has had one version or another of Apocalypse stuck in their head the past few days? Heh, good times at the signing — congrats on the IFMCA win, Bear!

“So who else has had one version or another of Apocalypse stuck in their head the past few days?”

First track, frakkin’ love it! Scott Ian’s guitar shreds right into your brain

    Bear,

Thanks again for taking the time to do a signing. I live out east and obviously couldn’t make it, but sent my west-coast dwelling sister in my place (the tall dark haired woman who wound up being second in line). She had nothing but nice things to say, has become a fan and is now talking about hitting the live shows. Was that Steve Bartock there with you? If so she was extra thrilled, another Boingo fan.

Well, not only did I order my signed copy, but I forgot to cancel my Amazon order … so now I have one copy in hand and a signed copy on the way!

Rule 1 of the Plazor soundtrack: Tracks 1 and 6 sound great turned up to 11 with lots of bass.

    Rule 2: See Rule 1.

The thing I really like about these soundtracks is that you can hear so much more detail than when the show is airing. For instance, in Apocalypse Part I, there’s this continuous three-note chime thing going on in the background during the guitar riff. It sounds like tubular bells, but it really has the effect of sounding like the Chimes of Death, which of course is what they are! Good effect, Bear, very clever.

Scott Ian’s guitar just frakkin’ shreds my speakers. I hope that if the BSG Orchestra ever tours, you bring him along…

Husker in Combat may be my favorite track, and it’s less than 2 minutes long! It’s really fascinating how taiko drums and gamelan can sound so military and imposing.

(It also makes me wish that Caprica would get on with the Cylon War thing and get little Willie Adama into the Colonial Fleet so we can see more of those awesome First Cylon War scenes. I really loved the old-school Cylon basestars and Colonial uniforms in the Razor flashbacks – they could have made a whole movie about the First Cylon War.)

@M104 “First track, frakkin’ love it! Scott Ian’s guitar shreds right into your brain”

Hehe, I hear ya. Although I love the other versions/iterations (especially for their atmosphere) I still might like the live version most; I always miss Tina Guo’s solo in the other ones!

Just re-watched Razor and am in love the music on the DVD menu screen. Can anyone tell me if it’s available anywhere in full? I went looking and found that this soundtrack was just released but I don’t hear it anywhere.

    @jwstreet “especially for their atmosphere”

Totally agree with that, this CD for the Plan and Razor has a lot of atmosphere that is brilliant. I wish I could have seen that Tina Guo solo in person, she is just amazing.

    M104:

You can check it out here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwOLnd1cJC4

These tracks definately kicks “ones behind” :-) I have just ordered “Battlestar Galactica: The Plan/Razor” and “Dark Void” from Dark Delicacies. Cannot wait for them to arrive!

Has it been mentioned which concert the live Apocalypse came from? If not, I’d like to hear which one.

    ComicCon 2009. House of Blues

    PhillipW-

I believe Bear mentioned it was cut together from all 3 ComicCon shows.

Dark Void is here! That means maybe The Plan tomorrow?? How do I describe it? Schmoodliedong? Not exactly, but it’s close.

(that’s hilarious if you watch American Dad)

Listening to someone or something get their ass handed to them in the Archon, on the Archon, by the Archon.. I don’t have the game yet… still living in temporary digs without an XBox and only my laptop listening rig.

M104 said: “I wish I could have seen that Tina Guo solo in person, she is just amazing.”

I was at the House of Blues all three nights for the BGO concerts and I will tell you, Tina is an unbelievable force of nature! I think we were pretty damn lucky she was there since she is usually touring all over the world.

I am not sure where you live, but Tina is making some San Francisco Bay Area appearances soon, one coming up April 25th and one on September 19th. Of course these appearances are going to be with the symphony, and not wild with her electric cello, but you cannot miss an opportunity to hear her play. You can find out more here: http://www.tinaguo.com.

I just received my Plan/Razor CD, along with Dark Void. WOW. That is all I am saying. Okay, one more thing, hearing the different versions Apocalypse made the hair stand up on my neck and arms!

Here’s hoping my wish comes true and that is to have the BGO play live again soon. I will travel to the ends of the earth to see them!

    Sue

Just got my signed copy today. Love the extra thin marker you used, which makes your signature look so much nicer!

Just got my Amazon copy today… And it frakking rocks! :)

A strange thing happened when my girlfriend listened to “Apocalypse” (the one with Scott Ian).
A few years ago, she was playing guitar in a band with some friends, but she completely stopped because relationship problems, and she never wanted to start to play music again, it reminds her some bad memories.
And then, she listened to “Apocalypse” and she almost cried, she told me that she was missing her guitar, but she didn’t know what was the cause of the feeling… the melody? the sound? the whole song?
She still doesn’t want to restart to play, but I hope she will change her mind someday.

I’ll add (after my really long post above) that Husker in Combat and Attack on the Scorpion Shipyards have been played (according to my itunes) approximately 50+ times each. That’s not counting at least 25 more each on my ipod. Dark Void? Don’t even get me started…

On a side-note, Tina Guo fans should check out the song “Promise” featuring her on Two Steps From Hell’s facebook page. Also, you should check out Two Steps From Hell in the first place, because their music is just incredible. http://www.facebook.com/#!/twostepsfromhell?ref=ts

I absolutely LOVE Two Steps From Hell. I have grabbed everything I could find by them on the Net, which only barely scratches the surface. I wish they would release their music to the public. It’s a shame that it is so hard to find their beautiful compositions. I am still desperately trying to find many of their works, including a higher quality copy of “Freedom Fighters.” The mp3 just doesn’t do it the justice that it deserves.

    Hey Steve and musicpaladin2997….

My question about which concert the Apolypse piece on the CD was from continues…

Steve: “ComicCon 2009. House of Blues”

musicpaladin2007: “I believe Bear mentioned it was cut together from all 3 ComicCon shows.”

Steve… yes, I was wondering which of the three nights…. though see below.

musicpaladin2007… I recall hearing that with reference to the available video, which has the video edits from all three nights, but do you think that the actual music is also edited from all three? I can see editing video clips together, but editing the music itself seems… hard to do and I’d have thought unnecessary.

It sounds TEH HAWESOME! OMG, this soundtrack has been worth the wait.

Bear, another top class cd!! Love Husker in Combat and Apocalypse (every version!). The live track was a great addition.

A question (doubtless already asked by other members here), but would you consider releasing a full albumn of your BSG live performances? I can only drool at the prospect of such an albumn.

Anyhow, keep up the great work on Caprica! And I’m looking forward to receiving my copy of Dark Void – curse you trans-Atlantic postal services!!

    PhillipW-

Yeah, it might be tricky, although I suppose not as much if they were using click tracks as reference all three nights. As a performing musician that has done multiple performances of the same show before, I can tell you a lot of the time different sections will perform different shows better than others.

I don’t know – just was recalling what I seem to remember Bear answering previously to that question. Bear would have to settle that one for sure :-)

Changing the subject, Princes of the Universe is a good one. Oh how it could have gone so differently for Cavill. “A temper-tantrum in the form of a cataclysm” is a great line though.

My favorite Apocalypse is the live one though. Ya know how some bands frankly suck live? Yeah, the BSG Orchestra isn’t one of those. ;-)

Before I head off to bed, I’ll just say this.

When those The Plan end credits started, I knew that Bear did that for us. I knew he was the DJ on the Galactica, on his last broadcast. This is Radio Free Galactica signing off. So say we all.

This made me shed a tear or two.

I’m a music geek. I’m a tv geek. I’m a scifi geek. Hell, you’re talking to the girl with a big neotraditional Starfleet delta tattooed on her arm.

And I feel like in terms of good television and great music, I lived to see Galactica. I lived to hear the music. And I’m so thankful that when the miniseries started in Finland, I decided to check it out. I didn’t think any ship was worth following unless it was the NCC-1701-D.

Bear seemed to know how important it was for fans like me, and with one single song, gave us one hell of a send off.

Now all I have to do is restrain myself from watching it more than once a year. So say we all.

My copy of “BSG: The Plan/Razor” and “Dark Void” showed up in the mail today. Frakking brilliant. What can I say that hasn’t already been said? I love it so much. I got goosebumps when I laid out all 6 BSG soundtrack cd’s on my bed next to eachother – the Miniseries all the way through to The Plan/Razor. What a glorious sight! I then added Caprica, T:TSCC and Dark Void to them – 9 Bear cd’s! (with some Gibbs in there too, of course). Definitely happy with the collection :)

I guess I can only pray to the Gods that one day in the future, we may get the “BSG: Bits and Pieces Collection”, hehe, because I’ve been jotting down ideas for that one too. But I don’t want to be greedy – what we have already is such an incredible treat. Thank you Bear, and thanks to your whole team!

Big props to Raya as well for her NOTE-PERFECT performance of ‘Apocalypse’ at the live show included. That was breathtaking! It sounds like a really hard song to sing and she nailed it! Great job Raya. I can’t wait for the eventual cd/dvd release of the show :)

One final thing I’d like to say: Bear, you recently discussed how you have found what may be the greatest NOTE you ever composed, in an episode of ‘Human Target’. I certainly dug the moment you referred to, but I’d like to cast my vote for the Greatest Bear Note thus far, and it is actually on this new cd. The track title is “Major Kendra Shaw” and the timecode reference in the song is right on 3.55. It’s a big Chris Bleth moment. It’s the first note of a short motif that is actually played in 2 bars by the ethnic woodwind instrument, but it’s the second appearance of the note at this timecode reference with the lower-end strings changing underneath it that makes it so powerful. Galaxies collide right there. It’s incredible man. I love that moment of music, and I think I’m going to have to put it out there as my fave Bear Note :)

Sorry to write so much again, but this was a great day in McCreary Music. Thanks again to you and your whole team for making all this happen.

    So say we all!

Yeah, so when are we going to be able to make suggestions for the Bits’n'Pieces CD? I think a lot of people here have some things that they want included :)

    *cough* double album *cough*

I found this post too late to pre-order a personalized signed copy from Dark Delicacies, but was lucky enough to get a generalized signed copy post-facto (yay!) I would like to say that they are a wonderful company to deal with via internet: every signed CD I have ordered has come almost instantly, and wrapped in a cool unwanted-movie-poster, like getting a present in the mail! I sincerely hope Mr. McCreary continues to do signings there for every CD he puts out (and that there will be many of those!)

Probably too late to direct questions to Bear on this post, but here goes:

    1. What ever happened to renaming the blog, and when you do, is there a chance you could include a general comments/info/questions section so fans like myself (w/basic cable and thus not following Caprica yet) can follow threads of general interest, and ask questions such as #2

    2. Regarding The Plan/Razor CD, which is beautiful, which track is the “definitive” version of Apocalypse you refer to in the insert text? May be a silly question, but can’t quite bring myself to actually re-watch The Plan (suffice to say, it was worth it for the music)

    3. Is there one BSG composition you would consider to be your ultimate achievement on that show, e.g., for purposes of introducing your work to an uninitiated (e.g., “Hey, this composer is really great — just listen to THIS…)

Thanks, as always, for continuing to provide the soundtrack for my days!

@number7lives – I know, she has such control!

Thanks to Bear and this wonderful blog, I’ve discovered his brother Brendan, Raya, Captain Ahab… and some weird band called Oingo Boingo? ;)

(jk on the last one, I mean jeez.)

    Hey flowwrnglr,
when did you order from Dark Delicacies? I have ordered both CDs after the signing as well – on March 3rd to be precice, but have not received them yet. I also haven’t received any shipping confirmation, only an order confirmation). Actually I do not care if they’re signed, I just want the frakking CDs ;) Okey, maybe it takes a bit longer as I live in Switzerland….
    Thanks a lot,
    Sandra

Hi, thank you very much for the signed copy of BSG The Plan / Razor ! I received it today (in France…). Really a great album ! it reminds me that I didn’t have time to watch these movies yet, though the DVDs are on my desk since a few weeks… ^^
The live version of Apocalypse is amazing ! Wouldn’t it be a good idea to make a live album of the Battlestar Orchestra ? This is only a question !
Thanks for this great musical journey !

    Sue,

Thanks for the Tina information, as I’m in Colorado that’s a bit of a stretch to see her perform but the next time the BSG Orchestra is playing in California that’s a different story!

Wanted to give a huge +1 to plainsong who said: “When those The Plan end credits started, I knew that Bear did that for us. I knew he was the DJ on the Galactica, on his last broadcast. This is Radio Free Galactica signing off. So say we all.”

That is the perfect thing to say it’s exactly how I was feeling listening to the end credits, just couldn’t articulate it like that. There is something so “final” about that version of Apocalypse it’s just perfect.

musicpaladin2007… “One other thing Bear… listening to the album….The Hybrid Awaits… was the rhythmic groove in the guitars supposed to sound like the Watchtower eighth-note groove on purpose or is that just a coincidence?”

No, that was absolutely an intentional reference to Heeding the Call and the Final Four Theme. Its reference in The Plan Main Title as well.

kaprika… “I love all the razor tracks. I’m just a bit disappointed the music playing as simon was committing suicide/bumping uglies wasn’t on. How come you didn’t include it? Will you ever release it or is this it for the battlestar project?”

It just didn’t fit, tonally. If there’s another release, it will probably end up there.

plainsong… “Changing the subject, Princes of the Universe is a good one. Oh how it could have gone so differently for Cavill. “A temper-tantrum in the form of a cataclysm” is a great line though.”

I thought about calling the track that, but couldn’t resist naming a cue after one of my favorite Queen songs!

flowwrnglr… “3. Is there one BSG composition you would consider to be your ultimate achievement on that show, e.g., for purposes of introducing your work to an uninitiated (e.g., “Hey, this composer is really great — just listen to THIS…)”

No, it would be too difficult to narrow down, because the score contains so many different moods and styles. The best I could do is say that the Season 4 album is the best representation of the show. But, even that only narrows it down to 150 minutes of music!

    -Bear

    To Sandra:

I also ordered on March 3rd, and it arrived maybe 3-4 days later. I think I only received an order confirmation, no shipping confirmation.

I hope you’ve received yours by now (signed!); it probably does take a little longer to get to Switzerland than to Boston : )

    Take care,

    Rebecca

    Bear,

The Season 4 music is indeed beyond fantastic — by An Easterly View, it reaches a peak that is almost emotionally painful to experience, in the best possible way (partly due to the story associations, of course).

But for absolutely unbroken listening pleasure, I have never had an entire CD as perfect as your BSG Season 3. I listen to that exactly as ordered, straight through, and love every note. If I were stuck on a desert island without my iPod, that’s the disc I would want with me.

    Hi Rebecca,

Thank you so much for your answer! Acutally I have received a Shipping Confirmation on Friday, that means both CDs will arrive end of next week or so.
I really don’t care if they’re signed or not (all other CD’s I’ve got are already signed in person by Bear and Raya, so this is not the end of the world). :-)

    Take care,
    Sandra

Thank you, thank you again for having heard the petition of your fans … your work on “the plan” and the pilot of “Caprica” is very strong, we come to have the empathy for Zoe … and what about your reading of your work BG2003 … I hate to hear you on Human target

“I hate to hear you on Human target” – Wow. I couldn’t disagree with that more. What do you hate about it?

I am absolutely amazed at the end credit version of “Apocalypse”. Before, the Gayatri Mantra-”Main Title” left me cold – there was no connection to the rest of the music. But “Apocalypse” is a killer tune.
However, I am confused as to who composed the melody to the gayatri mantra. The “UK Main Title” is credited to Richard Biggs while “Apocalypse” is credited to Bear McCreary.

I meant Richard Gibbs, of course.

The UK Main Title (also the one used here) has this sweet bit in it where the chorus meets the middle horns, and it’s like the best chord evar for me. :)

But great question, whose chord was that anyway?

dvd-junkie… ” I am confused as to who composed the melody to the gayatri mantra.”

The Gayatri Mantra is an ancient chant, probably thousands of years old. Like Amazing Grace, the tune has been around far too long to have a known composer. As for the chords, Gibbs and I each set the chant to our own chord progressions. So, the chords in “Apocalypse” are mine, re-harmonizing a public domain melody. Hope that answers your question.

    -Bear

My signed CD just arrived from Dark Delicacies! Hurray!

My signed CDs from Dark Delicacies arrived today as well! It took exactly one week to ship from the US to Switzerland.
This weekend just can’t get better! A new love and 2 new Bear CDs. Live is wonderful :-)

    Sandra…

    Glad your CDs finally arrived!

    -Bear

Wow, I love the samples you put up. It’s too bad that your stuff isn’t on iTunes in Canada yet :( . Do you have any idea when they will be on iTunes internationally?

hello, I’ve finally received my copy of the score “the plan – razor” and although I must say that I love Apocalypse … is really the “Prelude to War” of the Cylons (in addition to heavy metal) .. vcus I must say that your work is highly respected … and then my Live track of Apocalypse is great … to regret not seeing any live CD or DVD

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. I’ll see if I can find it.

Thank you Bear for giving us a little more of Galactica with this newly released music.

Also, thanks for Caprica’s soundtrack too.

I’ve been enjoying both during my commute this past week.

I’m grateful that much of your music is available on itunes as it makes it far more accessible than it would be otherwise. In a way I’m even a little grateful that the release for “The Plan/Razor” was delayed as long as it was as I wound up purchasing the “Dark Void” soundtrack while I was waiting, which turned out to be one of my favorite soundtracks since BSG season 4!
