Two Dark Void Soundtracks Released Tuesday!

Posted by Bear McCreary on February 7th, 2010

I’m thrilled to announce that Capcom and Sumthing Else will release two Dark Void albums this Tuesday, February 9th.  Of course, the first and most essential is the 80-minute album Dark Void, Original Video Game Score. Anyone who’s ever enjoyed a single CD of mine better check this out, because it ranks right up there with the best albums I’ve ever put together.  Second (perhaps) only to the double-disc BSG Season 4 album, this music is the most sweeping, epic and kick ass soundtrack I’ve ever created.

There’s little I can say about the score I didn’t already discuss in depth in this here.  Every theme and unique soloist can be found on the album.  Here’s the scoop on the official track list with exclusive audio clips:

    27. Theme from Dark Void (Mega Version Bonus Track)

Early reviews for the Dark Void soundtrack are all positive:

“Some of the most exciting and original sounding compositions for a video game you may hear this year.  It has already earned heavy rotation status amongst my personal listening.”
    G4tv.com

“Fantastic, with an energy that only live performers can bring to real music… Engaging and almost swashbuckling thematic writing and scoring that works very well on its own.  It is the first great video game score out of the gate this year.”
    Cinemusical

And this second one just blows my mind, because I never thought it would happen.  We’re releasing a soundtrack album for my 8-bit score to Dark Void Zero, available exclusively on iTunes for $1.99 (a pretty awesome deal for 9 tracks!).  I also analyzed this score in depth in this blog entry, detailing both my compositional process and the technical aspects of re-creating that classic NES sound.

If you want the true musical experience, definitely pick them both up.  The DVZ score contains musical material from DV, and is really a companion piece.  The Dark Void musical journey is not complete without it.  Again, track list and exclusive audio clips:

So, get your hands on these albums and crank those earphones and car stereos up!  Many of you have asked about signed copies.  While nothing has been confirmed yet, I’m trying to set up a signing at Dark Delicacies in late February, to celebrate the release of both Dark Void and Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and Razor soundtracks.  Dark Delicacies is great because you don’t have to even be there to get signed albums, you can order them from their website.  However, like I said, nothing is scheduled yet.  Keep an eye out here in the coming weeks for details.

Dark Void is available from Amazon.com, iTunes and wherever else CDs are sold.  (And ordering it through this link helps me out a bit!)  Dark Void Zero is available on iTunes and from Sumthing Digital’s website.  These two records represent the most joy I’ve ever had writing music and I’m eager to hear what you guys think of them.

Awesome! Can’t wait to get my copy from Amazon.com. I hope I can get the DVZ album on iTunes Germany, too.

I’ve had the Dark Void soundtrack on pre-order since last month, I can’t wait to get my hands on it. But knowing my luck, it won’t actually turn up on the 9th and I’ll be left frustrated and annoyed until it makes an appearence.

I loved the score in the game, and I’m interested to see how you’ve put the segments together. Do you know if you can order from Sumthing digital from outside the US? ’cause this might be the only legal way that I’ll be able to get the DVZ soundtrack (Link here: https://www.sumthingdigital.com/AlbumDetails.aspx?albumid=4596) because it’s seeming highly unlikely that It’ll turn up in the UK iTunes store in the next few days.

    Bear,

It’s painful, but I’m holding off purchasing this disc until Dark Delicacies.

Then I’ll be getting Dark Void, BSG: Razor/The Plan and a replacement BSG: S4, and saying hello to you (and hopefully Raya) again!

    Samples sound really great.

@OneBuckFilms I’ll be waiting for darkdel too :)

I love the 8-bit music, and I’m thrilled it’s being released!

Have you listened to The Minibosses? They play instrumental rock versions of classic video game themes. I think you might like ‘em.
    http://www.minibosses.com/

    @Chronos:

Kind of awesome that two people with a similar SN post next to each other :-)

    @Bear and everyone else:

Long time reader, first time poster. This release is gonna rock. The clips are great and I love the DVZ stuff. It totally takes me back to the glory days of “Mega Man.”

Bear, you rock! And I can’t wait to hear your “The Plan / Razor” CD :-)

    –Brian

Sad to say Dark Void the game was ultimately lackluster, but I daresay the music makes it worth being replayed. Well, until you get your hands on the CD, that is. In fact, this is the best video game soundtrack I have ever listened to, and I have listened to quite a few in my more-than-a-decade of gaming.

Bear! You must score more video games!

I’ve never been a big gamer, so I will probably never play Dark Void… BUT I will DEFINITELY by buying it’s soundtack.

All throughout Battlestar I had this thought of how great it would be to hear you compose using brass instruments.

From these clips this score sounds expansive, bold and heroic.

I’ve got my pre-order on at Amazon.com (along with The Plan/Razor).

LaLaLand has contacted us (Dark Delicacies) to have the signing on Tues, Feb 23. It is a go for us. Waiting to get confirmation. Another great signing with Bear.

DVZ iTunes exclusive? That’s kind of a bummer to say the least.

    @darkdel very cool!

    @darkdel Yes !!!!!

Well, i can’t make it on the 23rd, so hopefully I can get them signed at a concert this year. ;)

I am really frakkin exited about the DVZ score being available. I was hoping this would happen!

Woah, slow down for a minute. First you give us a game soundtrack that rivals BSG season 4, then another soundtrack of 8-bit awesomeness, then a mere two weeks later we get a new Galactica Soundtrack? All while Caprica and Human Target are airing every week? You are truly a god among men!

The soundtracks are what I love the most from you, and I can’t wait to listen to all of these in-depth. I cant believe they actually let you release the score to Dark Void Zero! I had all but given up on it, this is fantastic!

I hope there’s a Dark Delicacies signing as well, Granted I have both soundtracks on order from Amazon, but two more copies never hurt anyone right? Keep up the good work! =)

@darkdel: PLEASE say there’s going to be an opportunity to pre-order signed copies of the DV soundtrack for a German guy who can’t come to the signing.

I’ve got the Dark Void soundtrack pre-ordered on iTunes, and I intend to pick up a physical copy as well when money permits — gotta sit it snug with my Eureka and The Sarah Connor Chronicles discs!

Can’t wait to hear the album in full!

Think I might go ahead and pre-order the 8-bit album as well. I’ll probably never get to play Dark Void Zero, but if the 8-bit theme is any indication, this will take me right back to my days of Mega Man II. Good times!

Can’t seem to find Dark Void Zero on iTunes yet, though.

Anyone else feels mistreated in this unjust world? Amazon Japan does not have the soundtrack, Amazon US would ship it for only $55, Itunes Japan does not have it. Any other Itunes does not let me.

I feel like I live in the wrong century. Hello? I wanna buy something with my money that I have, but I can’t because the world is not globalized enough yet.

    Oh well… another time then.

P.S.: Btw Itunes US had a “pre order” icon next to the album, while on Itunes Canada it said “Buy” … probably just a different interface, but maybe you lucky North Americans can try and buy it one day before ;-P that is, if Itunes lets you…

Daniel – I have the same problem when I want to order CDs from over seas. I can’t even being to speculate about the merest possibility of ordering the four-disc Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack, because importing it from Japan would cost a fortune, and it isn’t likely to see release in America (on either CD or iTunes).

Getting a well produced video game soundtrack from an American label is a rarity, which is why I’m so looking forward to the Dark Void soundtrack.

Just ordered my Dark Void CD through your link to Amazon.com. I’m so fraking excited and can’t wait to listen to it.

I just want to say: Your music is SO good! I became a fan when I started watching Battlestar Galactica during Season 2, and now years later… Every single project you do, and every CD you release, excites me more and more! I currently own 9.7 hours of your music… and I can’t wait to add hours and hours more.

Congrats on the release Bear and what an awesome surprise to have an 8-bit album. I’m hoping it will hold me over until my pre-order from amazon arrives. This is an awesome album. I just got through sampling the tracks on iTunes. WOW!

After hearing fragments of the soundtrack around the web, I’ve really looking forward to getting my hands on this. It’s about time!

While I’m here, Bear, I don’t suppose you could clear up a BSG music mystery that’s bugged me a long time? There’s a piece that has been used infrequently during BSG series that I rather like. It last played during a Kara/Adama montage in the unaired extended version of S4 ep “Islanded In A Stream of Stars”, but before then- recap at the start of S2 ep “Downloaded”; S2 “Epiphanies” when Adama was taking Athena to have an abortion and Helo confronts him; S1 “Kobol’s Last Gleaming Pt.1″ near the start when Roslin is having a medical exam. Is this one of the themes you developed? I haven’t found it on the CDs or caught it mentioned explicitly (but I might have missed the reference).

Thx for any answers you can offer – a fan from the UK.

J.T. Jeans – Ya, it is true. I guess in that sense I’m lucky. I just ordered the FFXIII soundtrack on vinyl (though it is no Uematsu it seems to be pretty alright, I think). You can do it on the Squareenix store, but yes, importing that kind of stuff is always a pain in the ass. In times of internet and credit card, it is just retarded that I cannot get it online. It is like, hello, I’m a customer and wanna spend money, anyone interested? No? Well then, I’m sure I will find other ways to spend it ;-))

So you go ahead and enjoy the Dark Void soundtrack! ;-)

Wow, I just pre-ordered on iTunes. Preordered. I have never preordered ANYTHING on iTunes before.

I’m excited about this thing. Gonna try to download it first thing in the morning.

[...] melodies. Seriously go over to his blog right now (http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog), go to the Dark Void post, and listen to the theme. It’s mystical, it’s badass, and dare I say it? It’s magical. From [...]

I’m going to be up all night refreshing iTunes to see if it’s come up yet. O_o I’ve just got nothing better to do on a Monday night/Tuesday morning.

Daniel — have you considered trying to create an American iTunes account? I’m not sure if you can do it, but you might be able to.

Hey guys — the album is now available on iTunes! I just checked, and it’s no longer up for pre-order, it’s up for sale. For some reason my pre-order hadn’t activated, so I canceled it and purchased the album. Downloading it now.

    Horray!

“Above the Canopy” is possible one of my favorite tracks on a video game score ever. This is the music used in the demo for the game, and I will on occasion play the demo with the sound effects and dialog muted so I can just listen to the music while I play.

The section of the song that was posted earlier on the blog as “John Avila is a Bass God” is my favorite bit. It comes in right at the end of the track (at 4 minutes and 4 seconds). That’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard on a soundtrack.

Easily the coolest 5 minutes of music I’ve ever heard. It’s worth the price of the album alone. I think I’ll put it on my PS3 so I can listen to it when I’m playing “Burn Zombie Burn”. :D

My CD has been shipped. Now I only have to wait about 14 days for the package to cross the Atlantic *sigh*

I decided not to wait for Dark Delicious and order one with Amazon. And as soon as DD offers signed versions, I simply buy another one (If that’s okay for you, Bear *g*)

jonathondezlalour… “Do you know if you can order from Sumthing digital from outside the US?”

To all my international fans (especially you Daniel): If iTunes and Amazon are not working for you, then definitely check out Dark Delicacies, once they start taking orders. I know you can get international shipments, even of signed copies! I really appreciate all you guys looking for legal ways to get this music, and wish it was as easy for everyone as it is in the US.

Chronos… “Have you listened to The Minibosses?”

I’ve heard some of their stuff, yeah. Fun.

DarkDel… “LaLaLand has contacted us (Dark Delicacies) to have the signing on Tues, Feb 23. It is a go for us. Waiting to get confirmation. Another great signing with Bear.”

    Cool! Straight from the source!

Mika… “DVZ iTunes exclusive? That’s kind of a bummer to say the least.”

Dude, sorry. :) I’m just glad its getting released at all! Not many 8-bit scores even get a soundtrack release.

HarbourMaster… “S1 “Kobol’s Last Gleaming Pt.1″ near the start when Roslin is having a medical exam. Is this one of the themes you developed? I haven’t found it on the CDs or caught it mentioned explicitly (but I might have missed the reference).”

Hmmm… not sure which piece you’re talking about. What’s going on in this scene again? Refresh my memory. I’ve literally written over 1000 pieces of music since I wrote that.

J.T.Jeans… “The section of the song that was posted earlier on the blog as “John Avila is a Bass God” is my favorite bit. It comes in right at the end of the track (at 4 minutes and 4 seconds). That’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard on a soundtrack.”

    Ditto. I love that part.

Lex… “I decided not to wait for Dark Delicious and order one with Amazon. And as soon as DD offers signed versions, I simply buy another one (If that’s okay for you, Bear *g*)”

    Oh, hell yeah. :)

    -Bear

Having listened to the whole thing now, I have to say this is quite possibly the best album you’ve ever released. I admit that I’ve only got a passing familiarity with your “Battlestar Galactica” work, and while I like what little I’ve heard, this blows it out of the water.

The “Eureka” album is one of my most listened to soundtrack CDs, and I imagine this will go right up to the top of the list with it. Amazing work, man. I look forward to hearing what you’ll be doing for the Anime film you mentioned on your blog.

Now if only iTunes would get that 8-bit score up. Can’t wait to hear it as well!

    Dear Finland,

    No DVZ soundtrack for you!

    XOXO

    Love, iTunes

As for Dark Void, it’s sitting at Amazon, preordered along with The Plan. It’ll be a long wait, but lots of great stuff all arriving at once. I was able to order from Amazon as an international order with no problems.

Random observation: the “Bass God” solo from “Above the Canopy” would make a killer mobile ring tone. I think I might make it so.

“Now if only iTunes would get that 8-bit score up. Can’t wait to hear it as well!”

Still no joy from iTunes putting up the 8-bit score, I have “The Plan, and Dark Void” on pre order at Amazon just waiting for iTunes to put up that 8-bit. I loved reading about the process you used to do that score.

Bear I’m starting to wonder if iTunes is just messin’ with you at this point! by the way in the US you are under the following category when you do a search under your name:

“Music – World – Afro-Beat – Bear McCreary” uhhh what the Frak? :)

So…I just couldn’t wait. I went ahead and purchased Dark Void on iTunes today instead of waiting for my pre-order to come in. Listening to it now…AWESOME!! I also don’t know if I’ll be able to resist the signed copies when they become available either so I may be purchasing this album 3 times along with the DVZ album. Its well worth it!

Ordered from Amazon ! By the time it gets to Spain, I will be able to order Razor/The Plan from LLL too. Now I need patience and your great blog to endure the wait … :)

    Some alternatives for international costumers:

But be warned. I ordered my copy through Amazon.de. They postponed the order till March. But since my order stated that the CD is an US-import, I’d bet Amazon.de will get their supplies a little bit earlier.

My pre-order should be getting here soon! I was hopeing DVZ would be up on iTunes to tide me over. I hope Apple gets their $#!t together fast. I gotz cubits to spend.

Great news for those of us outside the US, we can purhcase digital copies of the Dark Void and Dark Void Zero soundtracks from Sumthing Digital.

    Dark Void:

    Dark Void Zero:
    https://www.sumthingdigital.com/AlbumDetails.aspx?albumid=4596

I just bought the DVZ soundtrack from there, pretty good download speeds and I’m listening to it now, the only down-side is that the track names and numbers aren’t done properly and you’ll need to put them in yourself, but it’s a small price to pay to get your mitts on these soundtracks. Hopefully this is helpful to some of you out there.

Okay, Bear, take two! The most identifiable scene this particular BSG piece was played during was S2 “Epiphanies” when Helo stood in the way of Adama + guards taking a sedated Athena to Dr. Cottle for an abortion. It was also played during a couple of S2 “Previously on Battlestar” segments, in particular the very long recap on S2 “Downloaded”.

I had lost all hope of hearing this again but it suddenly turned up on the extended edition of Islanded In A Stream of Stars, which meant you hadn’t forgotten it completely!

It’s very first presence, as far as I’m aware, was Kobol’s Last Gleaming Pt.1 – a very short montage where Roslin is having a medical exam, and Billy waits for her just outside, looking uncomfortable – shortly after this Cottle tells Roslin the cancer has spread to her lymphatic system. Roslin knows there’s really not much time left… which pushes her to action over Kobol.

Okay, I just finished listening to Dark Void! This is a fantastic score, Bear. My hat is off to you yet again!

Prologue and Main Title reminded me of the some of the opening material and earlyir cues of Raiders of the Lost Ark a bit, and there were other moments throughout the score that recalled some Elmer Bernstein flavors a bit. Those are nice touches for sure. I hope Ivan Reitman gives you a call for Ghostbusters 3.

Archon, Ava and the Rocket, The Prohesized One, Above the Canopy, Heiroglyphs and Betrayal, The Collector, Ava’s Sacrifice, and Will at the River are the big immediate standouts for me on first listen. I love the first statement of the Main Theme in Ava and the Rocket. It has a classic Williams vibe to it. In fact, more than once I was reminded of some of the early 80’s era Williams material, particularly Indiana Jones. The subtle statements of the Dark Void theme and some of the brassy action material has a depth in the composition and orchestration that is definitely lacking in many modern adventure scores. There were several moments where you exceeded my expectations, and they were set very high to begin with. The Ondes Martenot is used to excellent effect and works well tying everything together. Listening to the score definitely raises the quality of the game exponentially. To be honest, i wasn’t blown away by the game. Its just okay. But your score made it a hundred times better. I can’t wait for your next game score project, whatever it is.

Wow Bear, I just finished listening to Dark Voids soundtrack and I must say… it is incredible! Some tracks felt like Battlestar, some even felt like it was from J.J. Abrams Fringe with Chad Seiter. I also loved the constant use of drums in the soundtrack.

I have a story to tell — I was playing these tracks on my speakers and I could feel the drums go through me. Well I have the flu.. so the vibrations weren’t really helping my stomach… but I didn’t care. And well.. my stomach said otherwise and you can guess what happened next, Lol. It was unexpected so I was like wtfrak. But it was worth it! I still played your music after. Haha – and thats my story.

Someone commented elsewhere that the Dark Void soundtrack is too percussion heavy. The percussion is part of the reason I like it so much, I think. Love percussion!

At of 7:30PM, still no sign of the Dark Void Zero soundtrack on iTunes. I wonder what the holdup is?

Such a good CD. I just finished a second listen, and it was even better than the first. A friend of mine told me he downloaded it off a website somewhere. I was pissed. Now I’m nagging him to pay for the frakkin album. I’m glad none of that is happening here.

I’ve just recently started a blog. It’s not much now and still kind of a work in progress, but hoping it will grow into something bigger.
Anyways, I just posted a brief entry about the Dark Void Soundtrack. I’ll be doing another write up for The Plan/Razor soundtrack and on Bear’s music for BSG in general soon. Just something to help spread the word! Here’s the link.
    http://www.geekreflex.com

Hmm, so I can get DVZ from sumthing digital as well. Interesting iTunes exclusive. :P

Just bought the album on iTunes. My only criticism is that it’s taking too long to download! Fantastic work.

Still no sign of Dark Void Zero on iTunes, which is disappointing because I’ve got the store credit just waiting to burn on the album.

Yeah, I couldn’t hold out any longer, so I downloaded it from Sumthing Else. Apple doesn’t get any money from me today!

iTunes is my only option at this particular moment, so if they don’t get it up soon, it’ll be a little while before I can buy it on Sumthing Else’s website (I have to pick up those disposable debit cards to shop online, but I got a goodly chunk of iTunes credit as a Christmas gift this year, and actually Dark Void is only the second full album I’ve ever purchased in digital form! Dark Void Zero will be my third.)

    You. Must. Score. Ghostbusters. 3.

After listening to Dark Void, you are the only one who should do it. No question in my mind about it.

    You. Must. Score. Ghustbusters. 3.

HarbourMaster… “Okay, Bear, take two! I think I know the piece you’re talking about. The one I’m thinking of is in all of the scenes you’re describing… but not in “Kobol’s Last Gleaming, Pt. I”… I’ll have to go back and check it out. It’s a really emotional version of the Military Theme. And no, it hasn’t been on any CDs yet. It will hopefully end up on a future release of misc BSG tracks.

Mal_27… “I was playing these tracks on my speakers and I could feel the drums go through me. Well I have the flu.. so the vibrations weren’t really helping my stomach…”

That’s my best review ever! :)

    -Bear

Mal_27… That is both scary and funny !!!!

I love when music really booms through the Subwoofer. BSG does this nicely, and I tend to play most of my film music collection with some serious volume.

BTW, Bear, I got the day off of work for the 23rd, so lets home we get an official announcement soon.

I’ll be picking up my replacement BSG:S4 CD beforehand, and the Razor/Plan and Dark Void soundtracks there at the event.

So far, all of the Bear McCreary CDs I have are signed by yourself, and the BSG scores also are signed by Raya.

    See you there !!!

Cheers for the answer, Bear. I had wondered if it was related to the military theme. If indeed there is another BSG CD one day, I am sure to buy =)

@ OneBuckFilms: After it happened I thought it was indeed a funny story. My poor computer screen though.. and my phone.. and my ipod.. and my homework. Lol.

@ Bear: Well I’m glad you liked that, Lol…. a bit different than the average review, eh?

Oh and by the way Bear, I just pre-ordered a copy of the Plan / Razor soundtrack. I can’t wait until I get it!

Its actually the first time I ever purchased something online. Since I’m seventeen, I don’t have a credit card (got to be 18 to get it :( ) so I got my parents to purchase all my CDs and whatnot for the past few years. I just figured out I can use debit on Amazon so its now my new best friend : ) Lol. So I’m pretty excited for that. And that’s my life story for today. Haha.

    @ DarkDel

Looks like the date has changed to the 27th, at 2:00pm.

Looks like I may be working on the 23rd …

    Bear,

Just wondering if you have heard from iTunes at all about Dark Void Zero? so far they have nothing posted. I know sumthin’ digital is carrying it but I have a pretty sizeable chunk of change from Holiday iTunes cards. Like “Jonny Boy” said, “I gotz cubits to spend”

I´m from Spain as well and I got it from Sumthing Else, i´ll be missing the box and the CD, but i don’t have that many options. Haven’t played the game yet, but after listening to this score, I definitely need to!

I mostly listen to soundtracks while I´m drawing, and I have to say, your scores always get the best of me. Particularly this one has such a sense of adventure and classic action that I listened to it three times in a row, barely noticing time go by. The drawing I´m making right now is getting benefitted from this too, I´ll make sure you get stated as co-author. I just can’t get the beggining of ‘The Collector’ out of my head!

Looking forward for the The Plan/Razor soundtrack to have the full collection. And congratulations for another splendid score, i think this is your best so far!

    Hey Bear!

This soundtrack is one of your best records, if not the best. And it’s the best video game OST I’ve ever heard. You did a fantastic job.
I especially love “Void Requiem”, dark and scary; “Above the Canopy”, the rythm and the bass solo; and “Survivor Camp Combat”.

Also, I’m pretty sure that “Above The Canopy” (and some other pieces) deserves to be performed live, it could be awesome :)

And… I’d like to wish you a very happy birthday, Bear. :)

FYI: Signing event for Dark Void and Razor/The Plan:

I just got confirmation from Dark Delicacies that the signing will be on the 27th at 2:00PM.

See you on the 27th Bear !!!!

While I haven’t played the game, the clips from the soundtrack that you’ve posted here are excellent and I will definitely be picking up the CD.

Happy (Belated) Birthday! I hope it was a good one!

I definitely love the Dark Void Soundtrack, and its one of your best releases yet! It especially pleases me because it has plenty of percussion-driven action pieces, which are my favorite! They almost seem like they would fit into Galactica, but they have their own musical flavor of their own. It’s hard to pick a favorite track on the album (In fact I give up), but I particularly enjoyed Village Attack, Archon, Crash Site, Above the Canopy, Survivor Camp Combat and The Dweller (Oh nuts I named like half the album!) Its a fantastic soundtrack that is worthy of a truly astounding game.

The biggest tragedy in all of this is that the game was received as utterly mediocre/bad, and a lot of people won’t bother to listen to the soundtrack because of that. It’s a real shame, because this is probably the best video game soundtrack I’ve ever heard (Only Marty O’Donnells work on the Halo series comes close). I think that every soundtrack fan needs this (and all your other CD’s) in their life.

As far as Dark Void Zero, I only wish it was longer. I think it stands up there with the Mega Man games, so you have officially stepped into the 8-bit hall of fame. I can’t believe they actually let you release it, but I sure am glad they have! Its cool to see the connections between the 8-bit score and the main event!

I can’t wait to see what you cook up next!

M104… “Just wondering if you have heard from iTunes at all about Dark Void Zero? so far they have nothing posted. ”

Still haven’t heard anything. “Eventually” I guess. :(

Duckey… “As far as Dark Void Zero, I only wish it was longer.”

Me too! How fun it would have been to write even more music like that.

    -Bear

Hey Bear! Just thought you should know, I work at Blockbuster and I have a customer who I know is a BSG fan. So I told him that you did the soundtrack for Dark Void and he rented the new game just so he could hear the music! I thought that was awesome!

Hahahahaha something kept bugging me about Taking Flight until I went and checked out the Human Target Pilot entry again.

Check out Taking Flight on DV.

Then listen to the Train Fight clip from HT.

They sound pretty similar to me haha.

True story, the college students living below us are playing Dark Void. They cranked the volume a tiny bit (they weren’t being jerks, it’s just the walls are like paper in this place) and yup, there’s the Hero theme! I can’t say I minded. :D

As promised, here’s a link to my string quartet arrangement of the Theme from Dark Void.

    http://www.4shared.com/file/238796377/a16e713a/21_Track_21.html

    The guidelines for this were:
    1) No more than 2 minutes long
    2) Don’t do anything too crazy that it makes the tune unidentifiable or deviates from the pre-existing harmonic structure.

Listen to it, download it if you want it. Sorry about the quality, this is copied from a friend’s computer and she ripped the CD at 128kb/s

jonathondezlalour… “As promised, here’s a link to my string quartet arrangement of the Theme from Dark Void.”

Absolutely awesome, man. Thank you so much for sharing this. The beginning is pretty cool, but my favorite part is the second half when you expand the theme and develop it with fragmented statements and luscious counter lines. Very well constructed and enjoyable to listen to. I don’t suppose you’d post a score for us too, would you? :)

    -Bear

    Sure, not a problem…

    *goes to upload*

    http://www.4shared.com/file/239237812/8fbd2811/Theme_from_Dark_Void.html

I’m quite proud of this arrangement, especially considering I came up with the whole thing in about 2 hours.

    jonathondezlalour…

    Great, thanks for the score!

    -Bear

    Hey Bear,

I finally got my Dark Void CD from darkdel — it sounds really frakkin’ amazing. It still amazes me that CAPCOM ever gave you the freedom and funding to realize it. Very worth the wait! I just wish I could have got it personalized — it’s the only Bear CD on my shelf without my name on it :(

I have a question — on the back of the CD, there is a logo for GCDGrafix. Curious who they are, I went to their website and found a fashion designer?? What role did they have with the CD?

“Tesla’s Laboratory” has a bit of a Eureka sound toward the end of it — intentional? :)

I wonder if my office mate is getting tired of my incessant humming of the Dark Void theme by now.

Finally got the CD this weekend :D

(Incidentally, I really wish I could get the Dark Void Zero soundtrack on CD. Yes, I’m old-fashioned and I like to have music on physical discs. So sue me.)

Dark Void Zero is finally on iTunes!

Delta… “Dark Void Zero is finally on iTunes!”

Look at that… finally!! The whole album is only $3.99!

    -Bear

I love that iTunes STILL hasn’t fixed my category and I’m listed as a WORLD / AFRO-BEAT artist. Somehow, I think I’m the only artist in the AFRO-BEAT genre who has an 8-bit album out. :)

    -Bear

    Lol

And in iTunes Finland, T:TSCC is by that famous composer who has a very wide array of music… Various.

You’re an afro-beat artist here too. The media is always trying to label artists as this or that genre. You just got afro-beat! ;)

First off, fantastic soundtracks both of them! “Dark Void” perfectly captures the romantic, adventure style of pulp sci-fi while transferring it to your usual incredible mix of traditional Hollywood move scores, world music and punching drum compositions and “Dark Void Zero” is as if just emerged from a time capsule of pure 80’s console goodness while still showing off your amazing talent for beautiful compositions, I only wish it was longer.

I was however, slightly disappointed by the digital “packaging” of “Dark Void Zero” from Sumthing Digital, sure 320kbps MP3 is nice but FLAC or even Ogg Vorbis would have been much nicer now that there isn’t a CD-version available, and the package just contains the tracks, it doesn’t even include a cover picture, no info and the files-tagging is somewhat lacklustre (title includes track number, several fields missing and the “Encoded by iTunes” is left intact).
Are there any plans for releasing it in FLAC or another high quality format?

I just finished playing Dark Void through for the first time. Absolutely loved it, and absolutely loved the music even more. Listening through the soundtrack now and still loving it. Definitely one of my favourites and I think possible one of your best works so far :D

Now to play through Dark Void Zero! :)
