BG Roxy Concert Footage on G4!

Posted by Bear McCreary on May 11th, 2008

UPDATED 7-27-08:  G4’s timeframe to run the videos expired, so the videos finally came down. Hope you enjoyed them while they lasted!

G4.com is running exclusive concert footage of the recent Music of Battlestar Galactica at the Roxy Theatre!  It features interviews with myself, singers Brendan McCreary and Raya Yarbrough, and our MC for the evening, Kandyse “Dualla” McClure.  You’ll also hear clips from our performances of Fight Night and Roslin and Adama.

If this segment gets enough clicks, they’re ready to run FULL MUSIC VIDEOS of those two songs, so pass that url to your buddies!

And check out the absolutely stunning photographs from both concerts, as well as a full band rehearsal, from the lens of Andrew Craig, who does amazing work.  These are some of the best pictures of our band ever taken:

    Full Rehearsal, Friday April 11th

    Roxy Theatre, Sunday April 13th

    Roxy Theatre, Tuesday April 15th

We are in the process of putting together a video of the complete concert and the documentary we premiered.  Fear not.  You will all get a chance to see this thing.  I don’t know how yet… maybe I can convince Universal to include it on the Season 4 DVD, maybe we’ll release it online, maybe I’ll burn DVDs myself and leave them at bus-stops.  But, it will get out there, I promise!

In all seriousness, though… some enthusiastic noise from the fan community will really help get this concert footage on the Season 4 DVD.  So, if you want to see this, help out by drumming up some support online.

And, here are my personal favorite pix from the whole experience:

Unbelievably, M.B. Gordy broke 10 pairs of taiko sticks between the two concerts.  I’m not talking about drum sticks… taiko sticks are huge.  This guy is a one-man-wrecking-crew.

Guitarist Steve Bartek is the man.

    roxy08-cartwright.jpg

Violin virtuoso Paul Cartwright rocked so hard that the first 3 or 4 rows should have been classified as a splash zone.

    roxy08-bleth.jpg

When I introduced ethnic woodwind maestro Chris Bleth to the crowd, he got a fitting rocker’s ovation, a sound that most duduk players are unaccustomed to.

Violinist Anna Stafford looks downright angelic in this picture.

    roxy08-tom.jpg

Tom “Dirty Brahms” Lea.  This guy brought the shred so hard that he broke two viola strings (the C and G strings, the toughest ones to break).

Jacob Szekely makes his heavy-metal face during Black Market.

    roxy08-bruce.jpg

    Percussionist Bruce Carver plays taiko.

    roxy08-charlie.jpg

Charlie Unkeless runs the lights.  I told him I wanted the palette of the concert to match the tone of the television series, so he removed all the pink gels from the lights, replacing them with dark, Battlestar-y colors.

    roxy08-bear.jpg

Speaking of heavy-metal faces, I love this shot of me.  Too bad I’m only playing a keyboard and not a flying-V double-neck guitar… On second thought, maybe that’s ok.

James and I pause for a picture on the set of our interview for the documentary (the location was graciously donated by Pam Douglas, whose artwork you see on the walls).  James’ sexy Battlestar bathrobe was actually featured in the scene and got quite a laugh from the audience.

And, of course, I love this picture!  Here I am, backstage on the second night, flanked by two talented and gorgeous women: Kandyse McClure and Raya Yarbrough.  I know, I know… it’s a hard life.

    So Say We All!

PS: I’d like to give a shout out to Blair Butler and everybody at G4, especially to Joe Lynch, who directed the segment and cut it together brilliantly.

I am adding my voice to the Concert DVD chorus.

    Nice shots and footage.

Chanting for the footage on the Season 4 DVD:

“SO SAY WE ALL!!! SO SAY WE ALL!!!”

    :-)

Hey! So beautiful!! I love your music but i’m very far from the roxy theater, i’m in france! lol

    So say we all!

Nice!!! Its good to see you and your fellow musicians getting recognition for the awesome work you all are doing on the show.

I never used to understand why people went to concerts. I would tell my friends,”You have the CD, it’s the same thing!”. Well, I stand corrected. It was an incredible performance. I had fun for sure.

Hoping for more concerts. I would love to hear Cally’s paranoid/depression theme live.

    Awesome pics! (Kandyse is georgeous!)

While I would DEFINITELY pick up a separate DVD if one were pressed of this fine event because I feel it would stand out on it’s own and there would be plenty of demand for it….I think it would make a fine extras addition for the Season 4 DVD set….

Meantime I’ll do my part in adding to the click count over at G4….

    Hi,
thanks for sharing the clip and the photos. Awesome! I do hope so much that a concert will happen in Germany next year as you once hinted at. maybe at FedCon. On the main stage you could play for possibly much more than 2000 people!

And to Morden: I am a concert junkie. Live performance by the real artists is in no way like the CD! *g* For me, concerts are much better then the CDs. Almost always much more emotional. More of feeling and seeing the music and sharing with fellow fans and the artists then “just” hearing.

Thanks for the shout-out Bear. You guys were awesome and I am really looking forward to next time.

And keep kicking ass on season four. Its been amazing so far.

Bear we would love to see a DVD of the complete concert. Tell us who to lobby to have it released. A CD of the live performances would be nice too (maybe through La La La Band records?)

I remember seeing a Macbook Pro on stage with you, what was it used for?.

It would be nice if you linked to your fellow musicians websites. I was introduced to Anna Stafford’s amazing music through your show.

This is awesome news! I’m so glad you were able to get decent photos and video footage after all (since the ones I sent weren’t that great!)

And of COURSE we will pimp this out like crazy! Just let us know what you need – petitions? Letter-writing campaigns?

Fantastic footage of two absolutely memorable nights! No one has ever done a concert like this w/ TV music, because (Raya is right!) there’s no music like this, not on TV, not in the movies. Bear McCreary’s music is a singnular experience, and his musicians are as first rate as the music they play.

DVD now! CD now! Encore next year!
    So say we all!

    sanmarcos…

The macbook pro was used to run all my sounds. The big Korg keyboard was used only for the acoustic piano sound I played on “Roslin and Adama” and a few others. Everything else I played was a custom sound from the library I’ve created over the years. So, I ran them in NI Kontakt and triggered them with the CME keyboard (the smaller red one) on the top of my stand.

And thank you for reminding me to link to the musicians’ pages. Done.

I think it’s great that some soundtracks are able to go that extra mile and be able to hold their own in front of a live audience, regardless of their origin. Your concerts (which I have yet to see/hear in any form) come to mind, as does the work of Nobuo Uematsu with the Final Fantasy soundtracks, whether it’s The Black Mages, a Dear Friends concert or something else.

Definately something to look forward to, be it a bonus with Season 4’s release, a release on its own or finding it at a bus stop.

I flew from Denver to see sunday’s concert… good grief, it was worth every penny. Thanks for these pix and possible documentary!

    Bear,

Thank you so much for the concert! It was so amazing. I had the amazing experience of sitting on the speaker right by your keyboards. It was so amazing. I was recently watching the Eureka Marathon Season 2, and I love to hear your music in a non-BSG episode. But, really you have found your niche with BSG!

I read your blog everyweek, as it gives me more insight to the episode, as well. Things I made have not seen the first time around. You are brillant!

[...] is a video clip on Bear McCreary’s blog of a recent concert he performed.  In case you didn’t know, this man is the amazing composer [...]

I absolutely cannot wait for the DVD after seeing all this… especially given that someone I played in a pit band with back in college was in your band (Anna).

So I guess I’m two “degrees” from Bear

Anyhow, I hope that this event was successful enough that there’s the potential of another event once the series concludes.

Maybe I missed it, but did you put a complete set list up somewhere?

That must have been one hell of a concert I missed out.

Already i cannot wait for the Season 4 soundtrack CD to arrive and the season isn’t even half gone.

Wish i could have been there but here’s hoping the London concert comes to fruition, i wouldn’t miss it for the world.

    So Say We All

Hey, Mexichick over on the scifi.com forums said you guys were contemplating doing an actual tour if there was enough interest, and I, for one, would definitely love to see it.

While she mentioned Europe, specifically, I’d like to point out how PERFECT it would be to see you at the Orpheum up in Vancouver (especially for me, since this is only a couple hours drive away).

I would have given my left arm (I’m a lefty, mostly) to have seen this live. But this kind of cool stuff doesn’t make out as far Finland.

So with that possibility out, I’d instead donate my front teeth to have a dvd of it. So say we all!

    Tell me which bus stop.

Cool clip there. Not everyone can make it to these shows, of course, so concert footage would definitely be a great option for an extra on the DVDs.

[...] that the Roxy footage would find its way to DVD at some point, somehow. Read more on his blog here. Bookmark/Share: sociallist_02e5a88c_url = [...]

Love to get that on dvd along with the BSG music videos. Oh and please do a show in San Francisco.

I wish I had a time machine/teleporter and could go back and watch the concert. I guess I’ll have to wait for the DVD. Just let me know which bus stop you’re leaving it at. Hey a teleporter would come in handy then too!

Hope the London concert goes ahead.

Hope the London concert goes ahead. Huh if I had a time machine I could watch that now. Doesn’t life suck! lol

You guys should have the same strobist/color dodged-style shots of your band that the cast of BSG have! (if you don’t know what kind of photos I’m talking about, here’s a perfect example of Callis: http://topidol.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/james_callis.jpg ).

Those concert candids are fantastic, especially the violin guy. Makes me want to switch from weddings, sports and portraiture to concert shots!!
