January Premieres: Human Target, Dark Void & Caprica

Posted by Bear McCreary on January 11th, 2010

Next week is a good time to be a fan of big, kick-ass orchestral Bear McCreary scores, because I have (count’em) three new scores premiering in a single week, each recorded with a full orchestra!  And all three projects have sweeping character themes woven into the music, featuring some of the best melodies I’ve ever written in my life. First up…

SUNDAY JAN. 17 at 8/7c on FOX: HUMAN TARGET

Don’t let the cheesy pop music from the ads fool you:  Human Target has a thematic and lyrical orchestral score, inspired by the classic scores of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein and John Williams.  One of the only shows on TV with a weekly orchestral score, this could be the largest and most ambitious TV music in decades.  The typical HT orchestra is literally twice as big as the largest orchestra I ever had on BSG. Soundtrack fans will not want to miss this one!  Then, two days later…

JANUARY 19 on PS3, X-Box and PC: DARK VOID

My first entry into the video game genre, the Dark Void score combines the ferocious percussion and ethnic beauty of BSG with the swashbuckling adventure scores of the past.  The demo is already available for download on the Playstation Network and X-Box Live.  Capcom gave me unprecedented creative freedom and as a result, my imagination went wild with this one.  Gamers and soundtrack fans will notice immediately how unusually cinematic this score is.  Also, look for the 8-bit companion piece I scored, Dark Void Zero, coming to Nintendo DSiWare and (recently announced!) iPhone and PC.  And finally…

JANUARY 22 at 9/8c on SyFy: CAPRICA

BSG fans I assume already know about this one.  What the rest of you guys might not know is that Caprica is a distinctly unique series, one that can be enjoyed without any knowledge of BSG.  My pilot score soundtrack album was released last year to rave reviews (“A rich and satisfying journey; subtle and beautiful.” – IGN 6-22-09).  With the series now airing, you can finally hear the somber themes and instrumental colors introduced in the pilot expand into a vibrant and vast musical universe, complete with new character themes, songs, anthems and onscreen piano and vocal performances.  Caprica City, as you will discover, is a very musical place and the producers have allowed me to craft that musical identity and share it with all of you.

I started this blog with modest aspirations of updating it once a month or so.  Over the course of BSG, I realized that there are actually countless other people out there like me who really enjoy the ins and outs of film scoring, and this blog has obviously grown.  As a result, I am planning to post blog entries about all of these new projects with the same intense detail of my BSG entries.

I am confident when you guys hear this music, you’re going to want to know more about it.  Expect to see a flood of entries, album and merchandise announcements and other surprises on the blog here in the coming weeks.  And be sure to check out the Human Target, Dark Void and Caprica scores next week, because I think you guys will love them.

Very excited for Caprica. Even my fiance is excited about it! She liked BSG a lot, but thought Caprica was more entertaining, so I won’t have to twist her arm to get her to watch! She loves your music, too, so yay for that.

I’m stoked about Dark Void, too, but I have to admit: I’m getting Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 first. But I do have a iTunes gift card so if it makes you feel better, I’ll buy the soundtrack :)

And tonight, while playing the Battlestar Boardgame, I’ll play the Caprica Soundtrack in your honor.

Well, I’m looking forward to all three, in all honesty. I tried the demo for Dark Void earlier this week, but I was not too fond of what they showed; but the music was superb. It has a ring of Battlestar to it, but the theme already has me hooked. I’m interested to see how you/the developers will reflect the intensity of the action in the music. Pre-ordered the game on PC nonetheless.

And, well, as far as the others are concerned. Can’t wait to hear them! :)

Well, I already have The Plan/Razor soundtrack on my B-Day wishlist, and now with the Dark Void soundtrack coming out a week earlier, I think I might have Bear-McCreary-overload coming on. ;)

Seriously, Bear, this is going to be a pretty crazy month and a half. I’m going to have to work overtime to pay for Dark Void and its soundtrack, plus some other cool games coming out around that time. 2010 is off with a bang! I can’t wait for the rest of the year.

What I’ll be watching for on Caprica is what’s cut out….One can only imagine, given what may have been missing from the Pink Moon on Picon last night.

Looking forward to Caprica, I thought the pilot was good. I wasn’t a big fan of the Human Target pilot shown at Comic-Con, but I liked what little score I heard (acoustics in that room weren’t very good) and will definitely give it a chance.

And Dark Void Zero coming to PC?!? Frakkin’ awesome!

With The Plan/Razor and Dark Void soundtracks coming in February, can we expect a signing at Dark Delicacies soon? :D

Hoping Dark Void soundtrack being from a different label doesn’t muck that up…

Very exciting! :) I downloaded the Dark Void demo just to hear your music. Didn’t care for the game but the music was great, as expected.

I loved the Caprica pilot score and I’m hoping that you’ll get to use the same-sized ensemble for the weekly series.

Cheers to you and your continued success, Bear! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with us. I look forward to grabbing all the scores!

Speaking of your body of work, I browsed Amazon for scores that you did for other projects, and according to the site, “Rest Stop: Dead Ahead” has been discontinued by the manufacturer and some so-called “sellers” are wanting $45 USD for it! Do you or any of the readers here know of an alternative that is cheaper?

At any rate, I am looking very forward to the treats you have lined up for us this year, Bear. Great frakkin’ news indeed!

Finally, reasons to start watching TV again! Praise be to the gods…and you of course, Bear. :)

    Can’t wait, Mr. McCreary.

I read a year ago that Mark Verheiden and Michael Angeli were asked to write 2 scripts for Caprica. Can you tell me if these are the first 2 episodes and if they were consulted (as most on-staff writers are) when they went into production, even though they weren’t on the show anymore?

Also, can you confirm if Ron Moore is as involved in this as BSG? He seems incognito publicly. Does David Eick come to you and listen to your music?

Can’t wait for the new episodes! I hope Ron Moore recut the pilot with that added footage he promised to replace the nudity.

Oh man, I forgot you were doing Human Target. Sweet.

Downloaded Dark Void demo. Game OK, music superb. Much more like BSG score than Caprica score is.

Will be waiting for Caprica updates very excidetly. Your first offering was sublime.

And I was being a bit cynical about Human Target, this looks derivative, another cop show, not yay, but damn, it’s probably now what I’m most looking forward to.

It’s great to hear some respect for the orchestra!

Sounds really great, cant wait. Now Im really interested in the Human Target score. Don’t know really what to expect from the show itself though.

Dark Void might have a hard time with all the other smash hits coming out in January and February, but I love the soundtrack of the demo already and I think that might be the first time that I buy a game just for the score. But I read in some reviews that the game gets really intense in the second half. So should be good ;-)

All in all that sounds like good news, especially after this dry period. My Ipod needs more food!

Also, I asked this before, but I think I didn’t get an answer (or I missed it): Is there any chance, any McCreary soundtrack is ever gonna be released on a vinyl record? Maybe a best of or something? It’s probably not that profitable, but since big scores like Batman – Dark Knight, Inglorious Basterds etc. make it to vinyl more and more, it is maybe worth giving it a try. Vinyl is really coming back … and it sounds so much better. Is anyone out there with me? ;-/

You audiophiles with your vinyl…. I kid, I kid, I’m a sort-of audiophile too, only my setup is based on an good ole fashioned redbook player, a good headphone amp, and underrated unsung hero headphones.

Vinyl always seemed too much of a headache for my purposes to get a good setup going, but I imagine it’d sound nice from a vinyl setup with a big amp with glowing tubes. :)

This blog post was full of win, and very much look forward to listening to my husband fail at clearing levels in Dark Void, so that he was to start all over. :)

    Bear,

Can’t wait for all 3, I tried the Dark Void demo on my PS3. I have to say right now I’m not too jazzed about the flight controls but the music, man the music is great. I assume it’s Chris Bleth on the Duduk? I love hearing that type of music and orchestration again. Caprica I’m looking forward to the most. There was an amazing world created there and it’s gonna be great to go back to that world, really looking forward to the musical ideas that are going to be expressed there.

    -So say we Frakkin’ all!

    @ [EVERY BEAR MCCREARY] FAN:

If you have not yet signed the petition for the release of the second volume soundtrack, I ask for you to do so and support McCreary’s incredible work!

    http://www.PetitionOnline.com/tsccs2/petition.html

    @ Bear:

Sorry for posting this petition a lot through your blog. I want people to be aware of it!

Also, I cannot wait for all three. I am only buying dark void because of your music. I use your music when I play halo — and it goes with it perfect. So I can’t wait to play a game that originally goes with your music!

I haven’t played the demo yet as FPS’s aren’t my thing. I always suck at them. But I wonder if some of the frustration at the controls is because the demo starts well into the game… and not at the beginning, which one would think gives the player a chance to get used to the controls.

Hmm, I didn’t find the controls to be a problem. The addition of the flight element changes the control scheme a little from a standard shooter, but that’s totally expected. The only thing that is a little challenging is the actual maneuvering and targeting the saucers. But it was ten times easier on my second run through.

    re: Dark Void controls…

I really wanted to be a bad ass and use the inverted controls for the aerial stuff, but I have no experience with flight games, so I was getting my ass kicked. Once I decided to switch the controls to what makes more sense to me (“up is up, down is down”) I got way better.

    -Bear

JediTray… “Speaking of your body of work, I browsed Amazon for scores that you did for other projects, and according to the site, “Rest Stop: Dead Ahead” has been discontinued by the manufacturer and some so-called “sellers” are wanting $45 USD for it! Do you or any of the readers here know of an alternative that is cheaper?”

Wow! Collectors item anyone? Doesn’t surprise me. That label dropped the ball pretty bad. That’s why I insisted that “Rest Stop: Don’t Look Back” be put out by La La Land. I’d say just pick that one up. It has the complete RS2 score and a bunch of the best tracks from RS1, because I KNEW this would end up happening.

Muldfeld… “Also, can you confirm if Ron Moore is as involved in this as BSG?”

Absolutely. He even directed one of the first episodes!

NeoFall… “And I was being a bit cynical about Human Target, this looks derivative, another cop show, not yay, but damn, it’s probably now what I’m most looking forward to.”

I don’t blame you for thinking that at first. So did I. I never thought they’d be able to pull this off, but they did. They promised a big action movie every week… and they’ve done it!

Daniel… “Is there any chance, any McCreary soundtrack is ever gonna be released on a vinyl record?”

You know, that’s a cool idea. If you’re serious about it, you should bring it up on the forums at La La Land Records website, because they would be the people to do it. If enough people expressed interested, I bet it could happen.

    -Bear

I can’t wait! January is going to be awesome! I’ve been waiting for months for Dark Void, and while the game looks good, I’m really excited about the score (and the coming soundtrack). The demo of the game was good….the music made it great!

Caprica will be a welcome return, and I’m really looking forward to how you shape the music for the series beyond the pilot (and I hope you manage to throw in some taikos along the way a’la “Cybernetic Life Form Node”).

Human Target as a show dosen’t look too interesting, but I’ll give it a shot to hear the music. So few shows have a solid orchestral soundtrack its very sad, and it sounds absolutely epic. I’m crossing my fingers for a soundtrack.

And Dark Void zero on the PC! Yay! =)

bear, i love your caphony of music…when i play gears of war on my xbox, i listen to youre soundtracks off the hardrive, and it helps! i downloaded the demo of dark void, and to be honest, the only good thing about it was youre tune!

thank you for giving me and my son the best 4 years of our lives with “battlestar”. at times, your soundtracks made me cry when a certain scene appeared.

please bring more albums out soon, desperately waiting for more….

Inverted controls are for real men, McCreary!

Yea, pretty much all my friends play arcade style, but I’ve been using flight controls since the original “Flight Simulator” back on the Apple IIe when water was magenta. It drives my friends nuts whenever I go to their house and change to control layout and forget to set it back to arcade style.

How are you at Rock Band and are you sad there isn’t an accordion controller?

ieatglue528… “Inverted controls are for real men, McCreary!”

Well, hello Mr. Fancy Pants! :) Yeah, sounds like you’ve been playing that way for a while, so you’re used to it.

“How are you at Rock Band and are you sad there isn’t an accordion controller?”

I’m pretty good at Rock Band, especially the drums. As for that accordion controller, this is probably pretty close to what you’re talking about!

    -Bear

“. . .inspired by the classic scores of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein and John Williams.”

You had me at “big, kick-ass orchestral Bear McCreary,” but that comment makes me want to drive home and program the DVR right now.

Bear, first time posting, but I must say I love your scores. I was curious though if you have ever heard of Eve-Online.com it’s a space MMO, and everytime I am in it doing something I play your BSG scores. They fit so well, would love to see you guys get together to do something!

Accordion Hero for the win! hahahaha that’s great! Did you put that in your wedding registry? :) I’m darn good at Rock Band drums, too although I hate that I’m hitting a “drum” when I should be hitting a hi-hat. The cymbals are a nice addition for RB2, though. I still can’t play Metallica on expert yet, tho. :( Single tear.

Yea, I picked up inverted controls at like 11 and now the idea of playing the other way is just unnatural, so I can imagine what you’re going through.

Now here’s the million dollar question: When is Brendan’s version of “Watchtower” hitting the Rock Band store…. has that even been thought of? Is there any money in it?

The inverted controls were originally about controlling the camera, not the character. Camera moves down, character appears to move up.

Like @ieatglue528 I also got used to them at an early age and the ‘normal’ controls seem strange :D

    Sweet!!

    Awesome Bear!

I read on Mark Verheiden’s blog that he wrote the first draft to the first episode (after the pilot). I can’t wait. Besides Ron Moore and Toni Graphia (who only wrote 3 eps), he was the most consistently great writer on BSG. His work has such a strongly political and dramatic flavor that I fear I’ll miss. Ditto what is probably Michael Angeli’s follow-up episode.

I really wish they’d joined the staff. I feel really sad even now that Ron Moore stopped writing in addition to them for the rest of Caprica. :(

Hey all! :) You can catch the first four minutes of “Human Target” at IGN.

    http://tv.ign.com/dor/objects/14315233/human-target/videos/humantarget_bank_011310.html

    It looks (and sounds) good!

I’m commenting for the first time but I’ve been traveling to The Twelve Colonies for many years now. Because of your music you are an integral part of Battlestar’s very identity and a part of my own imaginative landscape. Everyone with whom you have worked with are all tremendously deserving of continued successes. Thank you for years of rocking, sweeping, emotional, heart pounding, epic music.

Now here is my question. Is there any hope of hearing that awesome cue from the opening of “No Exit” on a future album or as a single? It was the cue that began during the “This Has All Happened Before…” title card. I get chills just thinking about it.

Oh and “Apocalypse” rocks! Really, inspiring work.

jb1234… “Hey all! :) You can catch the first four minutes of “Human Target” at IGN.”

Thanks for the link! Awesome! You can hear the main character’s theme all throughout that scene.

DoOrDie… “Is there any hope of hearing that awesome cue from the opening of “No Exit” on a future album or as a single?”

Yes, it will likely come out somehow. I’m planning on assembling a record of misc. tracks that haven’t made the cut on any albums yet, and that one is high on the list.

    -Bear

Speaking of games, has everyone heard Tricia Helfer and Michael Hogan are voice acting for Mass Effect 2? Along with Adam Baldwin (Firefly), Michael Dorn (Lt. Worf), Carrie-Anne Moss, and Martin Sheen.

Wow! I think I’m going to like Human Target. Does the rest of it have this witty dialogue feel?

I was excited for Human Target to begin with, but now, it’s a must see.

Your music is inspiring. Any chance the BSG orchestra will take to the road and play in Northern CA??

Keep on playin’ my friend. For you bless all of us with your talent.

    So say we all.

Bear… “I’m planning on assembling a record of misc. tracks that haven’t made the cut on any albums yet, and that one is high on the list.”

I think that’s a smashing idea. Especially if you include experimental and alternate cuts of themes if you have any recordings archived. John Williams released a disc of alternates for Star Wars in that long box compilation 10 or 15 years ago. Sooooo good. I think there’s a home for that kind of release in BSG.

Oh, Human Target looks promising. I wonder if they broke that Hitchcock rule, the one about never letting the bomb go off, never releasing the tension. But heck yeah, I’m already thinking Soundtraaaaaack. :)

    Bear-

I know it sounds like you have been SUPER busy lately but I was just wondering if you had a chance to see Avatar and if so, what you thought of the score. It’s a rather intriguing project for James Horner.

Human Target was amazing. The show itself was good but having you as the music composer made it pretty much the best show on television. Excellent job!

Also, I was glad to see Tricia. Was that the Doc from BSG that I seen too? How many of the BSG crew will be on there? Its awesome :-)

This is going to be another awesome Bear McCreary year. I’m looking EXTREMELY forward to all of these new scores.

Somehow I got confused about the release date of Dark Void and thought it was this past Tuesday. I waited all day to get off work and get the game only to be disappointed. But its all good, because we are getting a triple dose of Bear score all in one week. WTFrak? I don’t think I can handle that much awesomeness. Not to mention the actual release of the Dark Void soundtrack and the upcoming Plan/Razor soundtrack. OMGs. Yea…it’s going to be a great year and don’t you still have a few other unannounced surprises? One being another video game announcement?

This is a fantastic way to start off a new year. Can’t wait.

Oh, and regarding that misc. BSG record, put me down for pre-order already. :) You think you may open a post up for track suggestions like you did with the Season 4 soundtrack?

musicpaladin2007… “Wow! I think I’m going to like Human Target. Does the rest of it have this witty dialogue feel?”

Yes, actually. And the second episode gets even funnier, because Chi McBride goes on the case with him instead of hanging back in the office. The chemistry between the three leads is really entertaining.

Mal_27… “Also, I was glad to see Tricia. Was that the Doc from BSG that I seen too? How many of the BSG crew will be on there?”

Oh, there are going to be more. Perhaps one that only has one leg?

MattH… “You think you may open a post up for track suggestions like you did with the Season 4 soundtrack?”

I will soon, but no one start posting ideas yet. I need a little more time to think about how I’m gonna do this. When the time is right, in the next few weeks, I’ll ask for suggestions.

    -Bear

(Lol) As I read your reply my playlist put on ‘Gaeta’s Lament’. I thought I seen him in the next preview.

I’ve just started playing the demo version of Dark Void and I love the score. Amazing work, Bear! So playful and atmospheric.

Don’t know if you already talked about that somewhere but do you have any idea when we can expect the soundtrack to be released? (I mean, that CAN’T be an if question, right?)

Have to admit, though, I crashed the guy to death the first couple of times. Needed to get used to the controls as I’m not really an avid gamer.

Oh and I love how they advertise the game with “Music by Bear McCreary” – even on the German Amazon site. You so deserve this!

Also looking forward to Human Target and, of course, Caprica.

By the way, can we expect some Raya or Brendan magic in the show? Would love to hear those two again!

February sometime. Official announcement coming soon.

“Oh and I love how they advertise the game with “Music by Bear McCreary” – even on the German Amazon site. You so deserve this!”

I didn’t know about that. Awesome!

“By the way, can we expect some Raya or Brendan magic in the show? Would love to hear those two again!”

You will hear lots of them on both Caprica and Human Target! :)

It was great hearing your score while Tricia Helfer was on screen in Human Target. I didn’t know you were doing the score until I saw the episode and I started remembering scenes from BSG. Amazing how much music is tied into memories.

    I love your work!

    Hi Bear,

I just wanted to let you know that I’m continuing to do ‘Bear watching’ in Belgium.

On the Belgian/Dutch television there is a show that weekly uses BSG music. It’s a sort of survival elimination reality show that takes place in Norway called 71°North.

In the first 15 minutes of this week’s episode I heard parts of:

    - the taiko part of the opening credits
    - the rest of the opening credits
    - Escape from the Farm
    - Standing in the mud
    - Mandala in the Clouds

and that mixed with some ‘King Arthur’ Hans Zimmer music…

I can tell you it’s fun to test my BSG knowledge. How long does it take me to name the tracks ;-).

Usually it takes me between 2 to 5 seconds…

Skating_Lientje… “On the Belgian/Dutch television there is a show that weekly uses BSG music. It’s a sort of survival elimination reality show that takes place in Norway called 71°North.”

Wow! Thanks for the heads up!
