    Caprica: Reins of a Waterfall

    SPOILERS AHEAD: Reins of a Waterfall continues to expand the characters and the world of Caprica, and so the character themes in the score are also adapting. While this episode doesn’t introduce any new thematic material, it does use the current library of themes in new ways.

    The first cue helps establish Lacey’s isolation at school, as she walks through the hallways while her fellow students scorn her for being friends with a terrorist. (Dude, her friend is frakkin’ DEAD, cut the girl some slack!) The orchestration of the main theme here is unique, because it rests atop a freely ascending accompanimental line in the violin and clarinets.

    This kind of classically inspired figure would often be heard in the full orchestra in BSG or the Caprica pilot, but never in an intimate chamber orchestra setting like this. I actually explored textures like this to wonderful effect throughout Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so I was confident the approach would work well here.

    Later in the teaser, Sam roughs up Daniel before Joseph speaks with him. As Joseph first approaches, Paul Cartwright’s fiddle plays the Tauron theme with menace. This is the first time that Joseph has taken on such an intimidating role, and the score shifts accordingly.

    I was pleased that the melancholy undercurrents of the Tauron melody could so easily be tweaked into a new, frightening sound.

    The Clarice Theme also shifts in Reins. Clarice meets with a mysterious figure named Arvo, who is clearly connected to the STO. For these scenes, the Clarice theme returns:

    The theme underscores both Clarice’s dedication and belief that she’s doing the right thing, and the presence of the mysterious Arvo. Here, the Clarice Theme officially expands to becoming the STO theme.

    Like Rebirth, Reins includes important pieces of source music that help establish the world, in addition to the score. The most exciting challenge in this episode was creating the music that would introduce us to Willie’s gangster lifestyle, as he ditches school and hangs out at the local Tauron club.

    For the pilot and first episode, I created a musical identity for the Taurons with the Tauron Theme:

    This theme brings to mind a folky, ethnic ensemble, reminiscent of the main theme in the Godfather films. However, I didn’t think that approach would work here. This scene required source, not score. In other words, the music here would literally be what the characters are listening to, and not an abstract emotional connection to their past in the underscore.

    The editors temped this scene with old-timey blues music, appropriate for the fedoras and suits on screen. And on a strictly dramatic level, the scene worked great with this music.

    But, something about the temp blues music in the scene really bothered me. While the Taurons have traditional tattoos, and are clearly proud of their heritage, they are also a younger generation. These are not the aged gangsters we saw in the pilot. They appear even younger than Sam. I felt strongly that suggesting that young Tauron gangsters listened to acoustic blues or jazz music was a mistake. We had already established that teenagers in the V-Club enjoy pulse-pounding electronica. Why would street hooligans only a few years older than them listen to something that sounded like it was written 50 years earlier?

    I pitched an alternate strategy to the producers. These Tauron gangsters would listen to some variation of gangster music, wouldn’t they? The producers, not feeling as strongly about the music either way, gave me a shot at pursuing this idea.

    I knew the music would have to feel electronic and contemporary, but also be uniquely Tauron. This would have to be music Tauron punks blast from their stereos in defiance. Hip hop bursting from car windows makes a strong statement in an urban community, and I wanted the same effect here.

    I started the piece with an old-timey piano solo (recorded with upright piano samples that should ring a few bells in your BSG memories!). From there, I sketched out a basic hip hop groove and turned the track over to my brother Brendan McCreary.

    You guys all know Brendan from his BSG vocal performance of “All Along the Watchtower,” shows with the BSG Orchestra or countless other times that his voice and songs have shown up in my projects. But, this track is the most bizarre thing I’ve ever asked him to do yet! He took the basic song structure and groove I laid out and produced a fully-realized Tauron gangster rap track, taking his inspiration from Del the Funky Homosapien. We even layered in some acoustic fiddle with Paul Cartwright, so that the Tauron source music would still be connected to the Tauron theme in the score.

    For lyrics, we pulled a stanza from a ceremonial Tauron song written for another episode that has yet to air. The lyrics are actually in Ancient Greek, the language that stands in for Tauron. I gave Brendan the lyrics and asked him if he could convert them into a gangster rap song. Not only did he pull it off, but he made a damn catchy hip-hop song, with a uniquely Tauron spin of course.

    The song is called “Voices of the Dead,” one I’m very proud to be involved with. But, Brendan deserves all the credit for shaping my shitty beats and general concept into a kick-ass hip hop tune. Of course, like “Caprica Abides” in the last episode, weeks of work were put into a song that ultimately is only audible on screen for about 30 seconds. But, its important to me that the full song exists, like the hidden part of an iceberg. That authenticity makes the world of Caprica more real. And I imagine there’s a soundtrack album release that will eventually allow you guys to hear these songs in their entireties.

    Rebirth and Reins are both complex episodes that lay the foundation for the first half of the season. There are even better episodes coming up. In fact, the show is just getting started.

    Wow, crazy stuff in this episode. I chuckled when the piano cue began. Nice touch. :)

    I figured that was Brendan rapping in Tauron/Ancient Greek. It was hard to pin him down for sure since it was so quick, but I thought the whole scene was brilliant. It was incredibly authentic and probably sold this series’ verisimilitude better than anything so far. Very cool, indeed, Bear.

    The rest of the score was also great. The opening with Lacey at the school was a beautifully melancholic arrangement of the Graystone theme. Strangely, though, I started to wonder if you were going to introduce a theme for Lacey here. Is that something that will come up later? I totally get the connection to Zoe, but it seems like her own storyline and the issues she’s dealing with (her crappy home life, crappy school life, dodging Clarice, helping Zoe, etc) kind of beg for a theme of her own. Not a crit, just a thought that ran through my head as I was watching. Kudos again.

    And dude, you are frakkin’ everywhere! I got The Plan/Razor soundtrack AND Dark Void on pre-order, my buddy at work is getting into BSG, another work friend is diggin’ into the BSG soundtracks (I helped them see the light), my tone-deaf cousin asked me about the music in DV while he was playing, and we are hooked on Human Target and Caprica. I swear, people are starting to look at me funny when they realize how many of these things I’m telling them about involve your music. I might need a break after this month. :)

    I’ve just seen “Avatar” the movie. Long story short, great movie but at least a dozen times I thought how much better it would be if it had been scored by you.

    The piano intro to Voices of the Dead was a neat subversion. We’ve become used to hearing solo piano in these scores, so that’s what we expect….but instead we get a gangsta Tauron rap track! One of the things I appreciate about Caprica (and also sometimes BSG) is that consideration is given to the history of the music in the worlds and how it represents the people and societies it is associated with. Those weeks of effort for 30 seconds pay off beyond those 30 seconds!

    I do find it interesting, however, that a very common style of music on Earth, in a common (well, a long time ago) Earth language, sells us on the other-worldliness of the colonies. Rather ironic, actually. :)

    Beautifil!….You make ¨CAPRICA¨ feel like HOME :-) Bear, just like BSG did, it´s such an ORGASMIC experience to my ears (*-*)…Gods-dammit, i´m gonna do some cleaning, and can´t do that without popping in one of your BSG Soundtracks on the stereo, it helps bring joy to any exciting or boring task (xD)

    I was joking to my wife that I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Tauron gangstas which show up. It’s no joke. If you keep coming up with stuff like this, Bear…the Season 1 disc will be a double offering!

    Ha, I definitely agree with Obican. The “Avatar” soundtrack certainly has a few very enjoyable cues, but I think your distinct style might have better suited Cameron’s vision.

    Anyway, back to Caprica. Once again a beautiful, subtle, and almost ethereal score. There was a specific cue I was going to ask you about that reminded me very strongly of another song, but now it’s completely slipped my mind. Now I’ll have to wait till “Reins” posts on Hulu and watch it again…not that that’s a bad thing. ;-)

    I’m really loving how Caprica’s plot is evolving. The intrigues, the politics, the subtleties…it’s very different from BSG, but no less interesting. I sincerely hope Caprica gets picked up for future seasons.

    Oh, sorry about the double post, but I just remembered another question I had for you. What episodes of South Park and Robot Chicken parody your music? I tried looking it up online, but I wasn’t able to find anything, and I guess I must have missed those episodes even though I watch both of those shows fairly often.

    Hey Bear! When I heard that hip-hop song in the Tauron lair, I definitely thought that was Brendan’s voice, glad to see it was his. I usually hate hip-hop songs but that was actually pretty catchy.

    Hey, what happened with the Graystone/Zoe parts of the episode? I was definitely wanting to see how you wrote the parts for when Amanda and Daniel are talking in his lab as well as when Zoe and Casey find Tamara for the first time. I thought both of these pieces were excellent and I’m definitely putting dibs already to wanting that on the album, haha.

    OH! – And I definitely agree with someone else’s comment bout Avatar. I wanted some taikos or something that felt authentic but that score was so…plain and 90’s. Yikes. VERY underwhelming, especially when it came to the Na’vi, using stereotypical instrumentals to represent them. So many possibilities missed….

    I have to say, I’ve loved your posts since I found this blog, but adding audio samples of the themes you’re referencing has made them 10x better.

    And on another note, Caprica (and your score) is frakkin awesome.

    Quick question, was the techno music in the V-club yours as well this week If so, that’s quite the diversity of styles used this week! I also see the taikos were back this week, always a welcome return.

    I squeed at the Voices of the Dead. Out of all the beautiful music for me to wallow in, that was just kick ass right there.

    I love seeing all these familiar faces – Kat (The PR woman), Duck (a Tauron wise guy), and wasn’t the judge Royan Jahee (Season 2)?

    And it even looks to me like Sam is living in Starbuck’s future apartment. Hey I’m not complaining!

    (and no, all those little geek moments are not why I watch Caprica. It’s a great show without knowing any of that.)

    I hate rap myself, but I gotta say that bit of music during Willie Adama’s hanging out with the gangsters was not only convincing, but quite catchy. If you’d had the lyrics in English, it might have been embarrassing, but having them in Tauron or whatever really worked. It didn’t sound all awkward the way Klingon opera or Klingon chanting would in Ron Moore’s DS9 episodes, but felt believable. It had the typically simple yet catchy melody and then hit you in the face with aggressive rapping. Nicely done!

    Wow, that’s really some awesome work you have been pulling off so far, Bear!! I have to admit I watched some episodes of Trauma and Human Target and while I love the score, the shows themselves did not really catch me, so it is kinda exhaushting to just watch it for the soundtrack. That’s why I’m really happy to watch Caprica, because I think it is really gonna be an awesome show and the soundtrack so far is insanely good. I’m wondering how you gonna hold up that high level until the end of the season ;-)

    Voices of the Dead is really entertaining! Do you know already, if it will be part of the season 1 CD?

    Why is everybody bitching about the Avatar soundtrack? I don’t know if it is Ocsar worthy, but I thought it was quite good.

    I could just imagine some Caprican equivalent of Tipper Gore bewailing that she found her teenage daughter listening to this vulgar Tauron noise — which just goes to prove that the entertainment industry is made up of un-Caprican moral degenerates who need to be pulled into line by government regulation..

    Then maybe you can imagine how I feel about seeing familiar faces from DaVinci’s Inquest/DV City Hall (the PR woman again, Cyrus, Jordan Durham/Durum; and I don’t doubt there will be others) and Stargate SG-1 (Teryl Rothery!!! – who was in an ep of DVI as well).

    But, so far, my favorite characters are Sam Adama… and Serge. (Yeah, I consider him a character.) I suspect we’ll see significant interaction – including recognition – between him and Zoe-A.

    And I love “Lost” as much as the next guy, but really, “Lost” intro music? That’s more like having fun with ambient sound design IMO ;-)…that said however, Michael’s score for the rest of the show is awesome. Another great TV score with live players.

    Holy crap! Those two are just annoyiing. I hate those kinda jerky geeks. I love the show, I love the music, but come on, just shut the fuck up.

    I have to admit though, I have mixed feelings about the intro music: I’m just irritated by the drums at the very beginning… they build up tension and you are waiting for the musical boom and then it goes down steeply to the sweet melodic tunes, which I like a lot, but the drums promise something else. However, now that I watched it a couple of times, it fits perfectly the pictures, like oh look it is a cylon!! (drums) … oh no wait, it is Zoe (drums gone). In that sense I like it.

    Haha! Lost intro? The girl must be on drugs, seriously! That is not even an intro. It is just a sad excuse for the new fashionable one-shot-”intros”, which allow the channels to put more commercials. Watch Showtime or HBO, girl! There you can see real intros. And besides, that “music” was “composed” by J.J. Abrams himself and not by Michael Giacchino. That dude would have pulled off something more, I’d say. Most people I know, who talked about the Lost intro are like: Nice, J.J. pulled out his keyboard and worked on that probably for whole 2 minutes. Off topic: New Lost season seems to be good, though ;-))

    I LOVE Matt and Nat’s video podcasts, they’re usually right on 3/4 of the time but yeah…when they said that the show’s opening theme was crappy, I definitely disagreed with them on that. Couldn’t disagree more. They’re getting a lot of flak for it too.

    Well, yeah. When Matt and Nat said that the BSG intro was much better than Caprica, I was like whaaaaat? The season ONE intro was better, but after that we got this crappy piece of music that was only worth listening to via Bear’s arrangement in The Plan. And while I love Bear’s work in BSG to frakking death, I absolutely loathed the spoilers in the beginning with the intro drums in the background. It was so very, very lame, because half of the fun of BSG was being surprised. Anyway, I think the Caprica opening titles are far and away the better work (though it isn’t my favorite arrangement of the Greystone theme). And you know what? They rarely, if ever, talk about the score that accompanies the scenes, so what the frak do they know? :P

    I thought “phoning it in” would be going drum crazy and scoring a montage of clips from the pilot with something awfully familiar…

    I just haven’t found the right moment for a Lacey Theme yet. Sometimes this happens. I went 3.5 season of BSG without a Zarek Theme, a full season of T:TSCC without a Cameron Theme and it looks like a full season of Human Target without a Guerrero Theme.

    I don’t like writing thematic music for its own sake. Each theme has to be justified. Its weird, but until I see the right scene where Lacey needs a theme, I probably won’t write one.

    Yeah, that was a kick ass tune. It’s called “Weak Condition” by MaxxFemm. Not sure if its available yet, but I’m planning on getting a couple of these great V-Club songs on a forthcoming soundtrack album (hopefully).

    Yeah, those were amazing cues. I just didn’t have time to write anything on them. Honestly, they didn’t expand the themes in any unique ways, they just happened to be really gorgeous arrangements of them. But, the scene where Amanda and Daniel heal their wounds while Zoe watches… a very layered and nuanced score cue. Definitely album-worthy.

    As for the Mat and Nat thing, some people just need headbanging music. If it is more subtle, then it’s just automatically bad. Subtle=Boring. As for the BSG theme, WTH was wrong with it? My favorite bit was when the chord shifted from vocals to orchestra. Loved that chord.

    For someone not into “boring” music – there’s really nothing that will change their minds. We can wave sheet music at them and yell and point and rant and ask them when their ears were last cleaned, but they’ll just still cross their arms and say boring.

    The alternative is to have a theme song that matches the show not one bit. Now if you excuse me, I need to go bang on some drums for a while. :D

    I imagine the next live concert, between the new Caprica theme, Caprica’s national anthem, and some Tauron hip-hop, is going to be one hell of an event. :-)

    I’m not sure if it is entirely by your own choice or not, but, whatever the parameters or directive, I greatly enjoy the direction and work of your scoring of this series, more than the series itself, not to insult it.

    Usually when you have such modern works, they always resort to the same styles (American Beauty, House, Desperate Housewives), even though they each differentiate, they all have a common denominator. I love the spiritualist aspect that your music pursues, keeping the modern essence, but less cold even though it retains that feeling.

    Who knows, one man’s opinion, but for what it’s worth, I greatly, Greatly, appreciate your work, BSG wouldn’t of been what is was if you weren’t part of the production.

    Also, are there any plans for the unreleased BSG works you were talking of before? I know that I’d LOVE to get that if it is quite possible. If you can remember I am the one who pestered you on the cue where Deanna, Six, Boomer and Anders are stuck under the cafe, and where Deanna goes to see the spiritual advisor on New Caprica.

    I figured as much. And I appreciate your restraint as well. As always, I trust your judgement completely. :) I’m sure you’ll give her one eventually. Given the fact that she seems like she’ll be a pivotal character, I’m sure the need will eventually arise. As long as this show has three or four more seasons to go at least, I don’t care if it happens in the last episode!

    The Tauron hiphop was wonderful. Really added great cultural texture in that scene where we’re still getting to know them. It was just novel enough that I came to see if it was a Tauron song written for the scene. Pretty impressed to find it really is.

    Well, first of all, its really nice. My only comment is that its too repetitive. Now that you have this core idea, try varying it up. Take us somewhere else, to a new harmonic and melodic idea and then come back to this one. It definitely has that dreamy BSG / CAP feel to it though…

Could it?? :) I love it, and I love all the work you’re doing on Caprica; it makes viewing the whole world of the series so much more immersed and intense. I find myself humming cues after watching any of these shows. I particularly love the Tauron theme and the ceremonial versions.

    …But really! If anyone some how wants to put that song out as a single, so I could hear the whole thing and loop it properly…over…and…over…and…over. Hahaha.

    I would give 200 Cubits to Brendan right frakking now if he or his brother could release Voices of the Dead. :D

    Oh, and who hear has preordered the new Captain Ahab cd just because you heard about them Mr. McCreary here, and they seem to be something you’d grok? :)
