    Acoustic Concert November 28th

Posted by Bear McCreary on November 22nd, 2009

Brendan McCreary and Raya Yarbrough are performing in a unique double-bill concert at Room 5 in Los Angeles, on November 28th, 2009.  I will be a guest musician, playing accordion.

I normally don’t blog about every single concert by members of my Battlestar (and/or literal) family, but this one is special.  Rather than simply dividing their time into two sets, Brendan and Raya have integrated their songs into one seamless set list.  And rather than missing their full bands, I’ve found that the intimate musical setting allows you to appreciate every note, every gorgeous harmony and catchy melody even more.  We’ve been rehearsing in my living room all weekend, and it sounds frakkin’ incredible.  Even though its an acoustic set, it’s going to truly be epic.

In addition to their remarkable original songs, they’re playing a few choice covers and a world premiere performance of a song that Brendan and I actually wrote together (believe it or not, the only song I’ve ever co-written with him).

If you’ve only seen them perform at one of our big BSG concerts, you’ll be amazed at how much they express with just two guitars and their voices (and an accordion to help).

    Brendan McCreary & Raya Yarbrough
    with special guest Bear McCreary
    Saturday, November 28th
    7:00PM
    Room 5
    143 N. La Brea Ave
    Los Angeles, CA

Room 5 is an intimate room connected to a nice Italian restaurant, so you can come for dinner as well as the show.  Or, as Brendan’s Myspace says: “Myself and Raya Yarbrough will be taking the stage for an early evening go round of song smithing and singing. Bring some T-Giving left overs and throw shit at the stage!”

Hope to see a few of you there!

    Sadness! Isn’t Room 5 21+? Sadness! I can’t go!!!! Angst!

Sounds like a very nice set up. Like always I would love to go, if I lived anywhere near to CA.

Hmm, I think I may be able to get there…

Well, you folks just have the best time! I still pine for the day you can come to Houston, TX. As a drummer myself, I know the small, intimate gigs can bring about something very special, as well as making me more nervous than a packed house! I wish you guys a great show. Let’s hope you folks can make your way down here before you slide into the ocean in 2012! :)

    Oh frak. I’m a Cylon.

Frak. I’ll be in San Francisco. Damn you, McCreary.

    But have a great show!

Hey, btw, I don’t know if you have seen Steel Panther play at the Key Club yet, but my buddy’s band is opening for them next month, so I’ll be there. Come grab drinks!

Ugg.. I’ve been to a disproportionate amount of clubs this past week and am nearly at my limit.

But.. I may try to attend this :)

Any chance these concerts will come out to the east coast? I would love to hear some BSG music live, but can’t really afford to fly all the way out there…

I’ll be there with bells on…

…well maybe not bells. But definitely clothes.

    Looking forward to it!

    GungaDin…

You know what, it looks like it technically is. I’ve never been carded to get in though. You might be able to get in if you don’t order alcohol?

Ankur… “Any chance these concerts will come out to the east coast? ”

Chances are good that someday we will… I just have no idea when that will be. :(

tmcarlee… “…well maybe not bells. But definitely clothes.”

    Bells can be clothes.

    Guys,

I just updated the TITAN RAIN entry. The producer wrote a nice little note to all the fans out there:

    http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=2916

    Check it out…

    -Bear

    Hi Bear and company,

Please excuse the Off-Topic post, but I would like to submit a quick “Thank You” note to Bear McCreary and his team.

I’d like to say a resounding Thanks to Bear his team of composers, musicians and singers for their work on Battlestar Galactica.

By way of explanation, my discovery of this series – and of its music – has coincided with my diagnosis and ongoing treatment as a cancer patient.

Bear and his Teams’ dedication, passion and hard work has produced some incredible music – all of which has been an ongoing source of comfort, courage and inspiration: music that is moving, stirring, soothing and contemplative… some of the finer music produces an experience best described as “touching the divine.”

Thanks for your time and I wish Bear and his people well on any future projects.

    So Say We All,

    - Rohan (Perth, Australia).

@Bear I wasn’t even planning on drinking. But I’ll be in San Diego (I live there) all day Saturday so I’d be driving up to L.A., which I have no problem with, but if I show up and they don’t let me in, it’s kinda a waste of time, you know? It’s a dilemma. Still debating…

GungaDin… “But I’ll be in San Diego (I live there) all day Saturday so I’d be driving up to L.A., which I have no problem with, but if I show up and they don’t let me in, it’s kinda a waste of time, you know?”

Yeah, its hard to say if its worth it. I can’t make any promises, but I’ve never seen them card anyone.

    RidersOfRohan…

Thanks for the kind words. I’m sure the rest of the music team will see your note as well.

    -Bear

    Hey Bear,

I know this is a bit off topic, but I just recently went back and started rewatching my DVDs of the HBO series “Rome”. Are you familiar with it?

It was a stunning series that if you haven’t I highly recommend. When watching it, I often felt like I had Battlestar music playing along with it. The composer for the series took the very earthy and exotic take that you pursued with BSG. It’s excellent music, and after some debating I finally took it upon myself to get it. It was worth it for sure.

Have you had a chance to listen? It’s amazing music and wanted to get your take on it if you had heard it…

    Thanks,

    -Scott

Hi, this is Wolf, former linguist for BioWare and now international Roland product specialist with Innovations Music and a few other things.

About accordion, sir — you said this is an acoustic gig, so that has me guessing it’s not with the V-Accordion. Am I right?

Not long ago when I mentioned your name at lunch with Paul McCabe, Roland Canada CEO, he said he’d been in touch with you about demoing an FR-7, and I wondered how that had been going. I’ve been doing some in-home end-user support on the FR-7 recently, getting deeper into its multi-surface MIDI control capabilities. That client has managed to squeeze the FR-7 in to ‘unplugged’ gigs by virtue of the fact that it operates self-contained.

By the way, your music has changed my life. When I practice guitar, somehow it always comes out now as a medley of ‘Apocalypse’ and the ‘Watchtower’ cover.
    –kind regards, WW

hey bear! sorry i missed ya but the wife went. heres the videos she shot. you need to get out of the shadows and in the spotlight! ;) also post on the songs that raya sang what the names are please! thanks! ttyl

Scott… “I just recently went back and started rewatching my DVDs of the HBO series “Rome”. Are you familiar with it?”

I’ve seen the first few episodes, but the score never really jumped out at me. I’ve been meaning to watch it again, because I hear it got a lot better as it went along. One of these days I’ll find the time.

Wolf… “About accordion, sir — you said this is an acoustic gig, so that has me guessing it’s not with the V-Accordion. Am I right?”

Yup, acoustic. I’ve been meaning to get back in touch with the Roland guys about checking out the V-Accordion. We got busy this fall and it fell through the cracks. A friend of mine, Doug Lacy, swears by his, and I’ve been really curious to try it out.

    PS: Cool name, BTW.

    -Bear

    Hey Bear,

Off topic, but seeing as 2009 is coming to an end, can we expect to see a Top 10 soundtracks of the year list from you? It’d be pretty cool to see what the Maestro thinks.

Darn, I checked the blog too late and missed this show! I loved their performances together at the House of Blues concert in the opening act. Any plans for future acoustic shows like this in the L.A. area again in the near future?

    Hello Bear

I was wondering since I have not heard any news but I was wondering if or when there was going to be a Soundtrack to RAZOR and The Plan. Also what tracks will be featured I would like to hear a redone version of “Something Dark is Coming”, from season 2 and the theme when all the colonies are getting nuked and destroyed. Also wondering if the proluge theme from No Exit will be on your unrealesed album coming next year.

    So Say We All
    JD

NeoFall… “Off topic, but seeing as 2009 is coming to an end, can we expect to see a Top 10 soundtracks of the year list from you? It’d be pretty cool to see what the Maestro thinks.”

Yikes. It’d be hard for me to find 10 feature film scores that came out this year I even liked. A top 10 would be pretty pointless. There’s not a lot out there that really excites me anymore. These days, I still catch myself listening to a lot of Goldsmith, Bernstein, Herrmann, Williams, Rota, Rosenman, Poledouris and older Elfman, Horner, Silvestri and Goldenthal scores. Carter Burwell still delivers. I like his stuff, but I haven’t heard WTWTA yet.

Jonathan… “I was wondering since I have not heard any news but I was wondering if or when there was going to be a Soundtrack to RAZOR and The Plan.”

Yes! Early February is the current release date. I’m actually in the final stages of mixing the album now. I don’t think the revised “Something Dark” will make the cut, because it doesn’t say anything that the original version didn’t already say. But, the whole attack on the colonies cue will be there. As for the prologue from “No Exit,” its certainly a contender for the misc. tracks release next year. I’m going to blog about that in a few weeks.

SeskaLien… “Any plans for future acoustic shows like this in the L.A. area again in the near future?”

Actually, yes! We’re doing another show together December 8th, here in LA somewhere. I’ll find out the details and put them here later today.

    -Bear

OK, I found out where we’re playing next week:

    Bar Lubitsch…..
    a Russian-themed bistro-looking kind of bar.
    **Tuesday, 12/8**
7702 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046

We’re on at 8:15 sharp and its only a 30-minute set this time. But, if you missed the kick ass show we did at Room 5, this will be the next best thing for a while. :)

    -Bear

Cool. I’m going to try and make it to that next week. I’m assuming you pay when you arrive.

And since you mentioned the “misc. tracks,” I figured this would be as good a place as any to ask if you intend on including the version of Lords of Kobol that played during the episode “Pegasus” in season 2?

I’ve been watching the whole series over, this time with my soon-to-be wife, and when I watched Pegasus, I noticed Lords of Kobol playing a lot differently than it does on the soundtrack. Unless I am completely off and got caught up in the moment of the show.

But I remember when it started, I was like, “Awwww yeah! Lords of Kobol is about to be up in this…” with my fiancé looking at me with wonder as to why she’s marrying me and then, after starting to sing the song (which was equally as unimpressive) I noticed that it was different. Am I right? If so, will that ever be available to the public? It sounded so awesome!

tmcarlee… “And since you mentioned the “misc. tracks,” I figured this would be as good a place as any to ask if you intend on including the version of Lords of Kobol that played during the episode “Pegasus” in season 2?”

hang tight. I’m going to do a blog entry soon about this upcoming album and that’s the ideal place to post ideas like this one. Thanks! :)

Hey Bear. I’m a big fan. This is off topic for the post, but oh, well. As a musician who’s been really inspired by you, I just wanted to ask you, what kinds of things did you study as you went to school for music. Did you primarily study the composing aspect or more of the performance? What would be a good general direction for someone who’d like to do the kind of work you do? I ask because I’m starting my music education in college and I’d love some advice on what you did to get where you are today. Thanks, man. Keep up the awesome work.

    Bear or others,
Brand new to the blog and I apologize if this was addressed elsewhere, but I looked and couldn’t find it myself. I saw the Battlestar Sonotica sheet music for piano is available but I was wondering if Kara Remembers was available on sheet music, or if anything, the entirety of Season 4 as a giant book. I finally have my piano after 6 years and I’ve been wanting to learn this music ever since I found I was getting it back. Thanks for any help and sorry to be the newbie asking a dumb question.

    Cerjan,

None of the sheet music is available – yet.

Bear has said there may be some coming in the future

nkhexum… “what kinds of things did you study as you went to school for music. Did you primarily study the composing aspect or more of the performance? What would be a good general direction for someone who’d like to do the kind of work you do?”

I focused on the composition aspects, and took very little performance-based classes at all. I studied theory, counterpoint, harmony, composition, orchestration, history, ear-training… you name it. However, my most useful lessons probably came from scoring a ton of student films on my own. I spent more time at the cinema school than the music school some weeks. As for the “general direction” for someone who wants to write music for a living… just keep writing music, as much as you possibly can. Work with student / indie filmmakers and never stop doing what you love. I think anyone who makes it as a composer in the industry probably loves composing so much that they’d do it even if they weren’t getting paid. I know I always have.

    Cerjan…

George already answered this, but yes… early next year I’m hoping to make a bunch of sheet music available.

    -Bear

George Fox… “I am working on a cover of All Along The Watchtower. I was hoping you could have a listen and tell me what you think”

Pretty cool, man. I only have one suggestion really. The opening acoustic guitar riff is not quite right. The little ornamental turn-around actually goes back to the C# tonic, and you’ve got it stopping a note early, on D. Check out The Plan blog entry, I’ve got notation there for how it should be played. It might help.

And the very ending, you’ve got that progression using the chords C#m, D then A/C#. Its actually simpler than that. There’s no A, its just C#m, D going back down to C#m.

You even managed to transcribe some of Bartek’s crazy solo in there. Wow!

    -Bear

I apologize if someone has posted this already, but this is freakin’ hilarious:

    http://store.hijinksensue.com/product/team-edward-james-olmos-t-shirt

Bear you need to get a pic of you wearing this w/ Eddie!

    Bear,

Thanks for the advice. Im glad you liked it. I actually did not transcribe the whole thing I found a (bad) guitar tab and went from there ;). The solo was the hardest to try and transcribe and i think that it is pretty inaccurate.

The only other thing that i still cant pin down is the amp configuration on the guitars.

    ehoutman,

    Thats so cool.

George Fox… “The only other thing that i still cant pin down is the amp configuration on the guitars.”

That’s going to be a tough one. With Steve Bartek doing guitars, we had tons of guitars, amps and pedals at our disposal and basically used everything to do “Watchtower.” It’s not a sound that could be recreated anywhere else.

    -Bear

    Bear,

I figured it was more than just a basic amp set up. I assume the sounds are also layered.

BTW I did not record anything for this. I used only virtual instruments. So it may be that I just need to keep layering guitars and tweaking my amp simulators

    Hi Bear,
The acoustic concert was wonderful, and it was a total treat to hear your singing voice blending in with Brendan’s and Raya’s (normally, your voice is overpowered by all the singers and instruments at the concerts). I watched the Plan last night, and I think I’ll have to watch it again. So much of my attention was focused on the music that I often didn’t pick up the scene’s dialogue (ha!). The serenity of the soundtrack right as Harvey’s credit appeared brought tears to my eyes. Great job!

    @Bear:

Hey.. sorry to re-post this Bear, but my petition has come to an abrupt stop in the past few weeks…

    @Everyone:

In case you haven’t heard about it, I made a petition for the release of the second volume Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles soundtrack. It needs a lot of support if we want it to catch La La and/or Warner Bros’s attention.

Please, if you are a McCreary fan and want hope for more of his incredible music, sign this petition!

    http://www.PetitionOnline.com/tsccs2/petition.html

    Thanks!

I hear you and I can’t help but agree for the most part. It has been a pretty unsatisfying year (Public Enemies was epicly disappointing me being a big Goldenthal fan (though JD dies rescued it)).

Just got the Star Trek: Insurrection score, and it wipes the floor with the new one.

Still have hopes for James Horner’s Avatar though…

I just finished a new version of my All Along The Watchtower cover.

    Changes:

Basses Layered for a total of 6
Guitars layered for a total of 5
    Amps tweaked
    Drums reworked

    No notes corrected …. yet

    Bear,

I can’t begin to describe how big of a fan I am of your music. The best thing about Battlestar Galactica was your music. I’m a choreographer working with junior and senior highschool students. I want to do a project that involves contemporary dance and more importantly introduces your music to the Montgomery, Alabama community. NBC Universal has given me the go ahead to use “A Distant Sadness,” and “Kara Remembers.” However, the most pivotal piece of music “Gaeta’s Lament,” they will not grant permission for its use. Is there any way you can help me with this dilemma. I know you are incredibly busy, but any help will be greatly appreciated. I wish you nothing but luck in the future. I can’t wait to see where you take your music next.

Jigglypuff… “So much of my attention was focused on the music that I often didn’t pick up the scene’s dialogue (ha!).”

Music is more important than dialog sometimes! :)

    Mal_27… re the petition

Yes, please keep it up! I’m hoping I can convince WB to do an iTunes release at the very least. Still struggling to get the 1st TSCC album on iTunes.

saraelyse… “However, the most pivotal piece of music “Gaeta’s Lament,” they will not grant permission for its use. Is there any way you can help me with this dilemma.”

Sorry, they’re the bosses when it comes to permission. I wouldn’t even know where to start. I think its miraculous you got the permission you did. Congrats!

    -Bear

    George Fox…

Sounds better. That acoustic line is still off by 1 note. But, its sounding a little fuller and more filled out. Now you just gotta get some vocals on it. :)

    -Bear

    @ Bear:

I hope you can convince them… I am sure you could persuade them. Your talented enough to do it! :P

Just to quickly mention — I cannot stop listening to “So Much Life” from your season 4 soundtrack of BSG. Its so powerful — it makes me frackin tear-eyed every time I listen to it. Powerful stuff, Bear. So is the rest of the soundtrack. I cannot believe how much the score intensified over the four seasons. It just got better and better as seasons went by. I was amazed with “Storming New Caprica” — but I was even more amazed with the “Assault On The Colony.” As a major TSCC fan, I loved your soundtrack for TSCC — and I loved how some sounds you had used from that score were used in the Season Four Soundtrack, which made me love it much, much more. Anyway, just want to say you make incredible music, Bear. You really do.

    Mal

P.S. My mother had mentioned to me that some of the music from BSG reminds her of Titanic. Lol.

Mal_27… “P.S. My mother had mentioned to me that some of the music from BSG reminds her of Titanic. Lol.”

Its probably the parts where Eric Rigler plays the Irish Whistle. He’s the same guy who played whistle on “Titanic!”

    -Bear

I think the other thing that may contribute is that the B-section to the Adama theme is a bit like the B-section to the Titanic theme, and both at times have the tendency to be played on Ullilean pipes. (Not sure if he’s the one who played pipes on Titanic too?)

    @saraelyse

Is it possible that they don’t want to grant permission due to the track containing a vocal performance? That would be a real bummer. I think Gaeta’s Lament is ripe for adaptation. I even thought of using it in a field show.

Sorry to chime in so late,

    “Carter Burwell still delivers”

Huge +1 on that Bear, are you familiar with Carter’s score for “Gods and Monsters”? it’s my favorite from Carter the first track “Arise, Clay” always ends up in a play list somewhere.

Oh.. that would explain it then. haha.

musicpaladin2007… ” (Not sure if he’s the one who played pipes on Titanic too?)”

Pretty sure he is, actually, yeah. Hmmm… I never noticed any harmonic similarities, but I’ll check it out next time I watch the movie.

M104… “Huge +1 on that Bear, are you familiar with Carter’s score for “Gods and Monsters”?”

I’ve seen the film, but I honestly don’t remember the music off the top of my head. I remember really liking the movie though.

new version of my All Along The Watchtower cover

    New acoustic guitars
Acoustic backing for the whole piece
    Tweaked the rhythm guitars
    Drum sound tweaked

Ive got a quick question; What software do you use for arranging your recordings and how much of the music is live instruments vs virtual instruments?

    Enjoy

Somewhat off-topic, but Bear, did you see that http://www.denofgeek.com posted a review of James Horner’s Avatar soundtrack, and they specifically compare it to your BSG soundtracks. Pretty cool huh?

For anyone looking for a direct link to the article razgriz1138 is referring to, you can find it here:

    http://www.denofgeek.com/Reviews/382931/avatar_music_from_the_motion_picture_review.html

They also compare it to Goldsmith. Always nice to see Bear get some love in the press, right?

Speaking of Den of Geek, I’m a freelance writer for them. Any chance I can get an interview when you have some free time Bear?

    Raz

Hey Bear, haven’t commented in a while, I’m still pretty disoriented now that Battlestar is over…

But I saw the pilot for Caprica!!! EPIC! loved it. Harmonically it’s extremely interesting, I love the flute work. Also, I loved the little gesture to “Reuniting the Fleet” when we find that little William is actually… BILL ADAMA!!! I thought that was a great gift for us fans, and I thank you sir.

    I had two questions;

    1. Your writing for various percussion is the best around, and I would love to follow after this tradition you’ve created someday. Could you suggest some resources for me to study, so that I may learn to write for percussion in a similar way?

    2. I go to the Berklee College of Music, and you are a big hit around here in the Film Scoring club/department. Could you ever be convinced to give a guest lecture/forum here? I can be contacted at snunamaker@berklee.net

God man, just blown away. keep it up.

Hey Bear, random question. Does your staff from the staff email run requests or questions by you?

So…. the current status of my own personal challenge ;-)

    http://hisroad.com/bsg/mp3/thesignal.mp3

I decided to orchestrate it for full orchestra to start off with. I still need to do some work on the orchestration and convert some of the drum hits to rim shots, but I think the notes are pretty much there.

    Mal_27…

“Does your staff from the staff email run requests or questions by you?”

Some of them. They know the answers to about 99% of the questions we get emailed. If they aren’t sure, they run it by me. The best way to reach me is through the blog.

    -Bear

musicpaladin2007… “the current status of my own personal challenge ;-)”

Wow, I salute thee, sir. This is amazing. Your best arrangement thus far. Yeah, you’re right. Basically all the notes are there. And you got the tone clusters right, as well as the metric modulation. You deserve a merit badge or a trophy or something for this one! I’m very impressed…

    -Bear

I see.. well, I asked if there could be a possibility that you could release samples of your instruments that you use.. say for example a beat of a taiko drum or whatever interesting instruments you use.

Mal_27… “I asked if there could be a possibility that you could release samples of your instruments that you use.. say for example a beat of a taiko drum or whatever interesting instruments you use.”

Well, I’m sure they told you that we can’t release any samples or custom sounds. Sorry! A magician has to leave a few tricks behind the curtain. :)

    -Bear

Darn. (Lol) I understandddd. Well I do take sounds from tv shows you score and I use them just to better merge music that I edit. Not the best quality but it works. That’s alright with, right?

    * Missed a word in my last sentences –> “That’s alright with you, right?”

I don’t know if I ever mentioned it but I write stories and use music from TV shows and movies and I edit and mix the music so that it goes with what goes on in the story. I give themes to characters and such. It’s my nerdy way of making me have a better picture of what is going on in my story, in addition to getting myself more attached to my story (I get bored reading, really). I use your music a lot. Hard to edit though.

Mal_27… ” I use your music a lot. Hard to edit though.”

Sounds cool, although yeah, I imagine some of my cues don’t edit well.

You should do more shows/performances outside the USA (like Europe) for more people to enjoy ;)

I’m loving Caprica so far! You guys just keep outdoing yourselves.

The dance piece is in the works. We perform in about two weeks. Everyone is really digging the music and wants to know where they can find more of it. Should’t there be like a Bear McCreary full length ballet in the works? Come on! When I get a recording of the piece with lights and everything I’ll try to send a copy your way via youtube or something.

    So say we all!

Dear Mr. McCreary, please schedule more Battlestart Galactica Orchestra tours. I’ve missed out on the concerts to date and wish deeply to attend one, thank you.
