Remix Me: The Dark Void Remix Contest

Posted by Bear McCreary on November 21st, 2009

This has got to be one of the coolest contests out there for soundtrack fans!  Capcom & URB are sponsoring a Dark Void Remix Contest.  You have the chance to remix the Theme from Dark Void” and enter to win a bunch of cool prizes.  The winning entry may even be used in game promos or in a digital soundtrack. Best of all, the individual track assets are made available to you, so you can peel back the layers of my orchestration and mess around with the various elements.

The details and official rules are available here at the official site. (You must create a Capcom Unity account to log in.)

And, for you loyal blog readers, I’ll even help you out.  :)  Upload your draft somewhere and post a link in the comments field below and I’ll listen to it and make some suggestions for you.  Now remember, I’m only one of the deciding judges, so even if I like what you do that doesn’t mean you win.  But, I look forward to listening to as many entries as I possibly can. Be warned, this contest ends December 15th, so you have to get moving!

Here’s what the press release has to say:

“It’s no small feat to step into Bear McCreary’s world and remix one of his songs. We have the full track, THEME FROM DARK VOID, and other song elements geared up for download and it is up to you to transform it. It’s entirely up to you to determine which direction the musical journey should go. Take a stab at mixing Bear’s orchestral sounds with some drum & bass and rap! Or how about hard rock with elements of classical music? Just do us a favor: make it EPIC! You can download all the song assets HERE.

But before we leave you to tinker, you should read the OFFICIAL LEGAL RULES. Read it? Good. The main points to remember are:

  • You must be a legal U.S. resident over 18
  • One entry per person
  • All remix elements, including beats & vocals, MUST be original assets created by you (that means no sampling other songs into your remix … any submissions containing other licensed music will be automatically disqualified)
  • Remix submission must be in MP3 format only
  • 5 MB limit for your file upload

Now here’s the real exciting part: the prizes! All valid submissions will receive 1,500 Community Points toward our COMMUNITY MONTHLY PRIZES. But one (1) Grand Prize winner, who submits the best original remix of Theme from Dark Void as determined by Capcom and the Dark Void Community staff, will receive the following gear:

  • Native Instruments TRAKTOR SCRATCH PRO system
  • Native Instruments MASCHINE Groove Production Studio
  • Olympus LS-11 Digital Audio Recorder

Amazing, right?! In addition to these prizes, the winning remix may have the opportunity to be featured in a number of promotions. These may include having your winning remix on the digital-only release of the Dark Void soundtrack, used in sync in official Dark Void game trailers, pressed to limited-edition Dark Void vinyl, or featured in a future edition of URB Magazine’s digital issue. Just remember, all promotional considerations are at the discretion of the Sponsor and are not guaranteed in the Grand Prize. You can read all about the Grand Prize in the OFFICIAL LEGAL RULES.

Sound good? Great! We can’t wait to hear the epic interpretations! One final note: the tempo of this song is 143 BPM … thought you might like to know so you can match up other beats.

You have until December 15, 2009 to submit your original remix entry.”

Sound like a blast or what?  I’m tempted to do one myself just for fun, but I don’t think I’ll have time.

And this contest is a great way to step into the musical world of Dark Void.  The full soundtrack album comes out in January on CD and iTunes and it just may end up being my best sounding record, surpassing even BSG Season 4 in scope.  We just finished mastering the album at the world famous Bernie Grundman Mastering facility in Los Angeles and it was bursting off the speakers.  We crammed so much music on this CD that no one thought it would all fit.  (After some clever trimming, it did… with 2 seconds to spare!)  If you are a fan of any of my other work, the Dark Void soundtrack is not to be missed.

I’d absolutely love to participate in this competition. It’s just a shame it’s only open to people in the US. Sometimes it really sucks living in England, all the best competitions – or at least the ones I wanna do – are US only. *grumbles*

Great news about the soundtrack though. Can’t wait to get my hands on it. It’s one thing I love about your soundtrack CDs, they’re always crammed full of music.

I’m not a legal US citizen, so good luck to the participants, I’ll listen to all tracks posted here :-).

Just realised that we can still download the stuff. I might have a go at this anyway, even though we can’t enter from outside the US. Should be a lot of fun. No idea what I’ll do with it though, but I’m gonna have a go.

jonathondezlalour…

Yeah, go for it. Even if you can’t enter the contest, you can still post it here for everyone to enjoy. :)

-Bear

While I probably won’t have time to enter in time for the deadline(Due to Final Exams), this seems like such a fun project I might just do it anyway!

Sweet! I’ll take a look.

BTW any eta on the release of the DV soundtrack?

MusicPaladin2007… “BTW any eta on the release of the DV soundtrack?”

January is my guess. No exact date yet.

-Bear

Yeah, a bummer about the US residency requirement, but oh well. Maybe I’ll take a look at the assets anyways, should be interesting.

I’d love to get in on this, but I don’t think I have enough time, but this is pretty frakkin’ cool.

I suspect I’ll have little skill at this sort of thing but I’ll try anyway ;)

Should we expect another Dark Delicacies signing?

Sheesh, I’ve been listening to the main theme all day. Its ridiculously good! I’ve got to say…..I think the album will be on par with any Galactica album, if not better.

I can’t frakin wait!

Cory… “Should we expect another Dark Delicacies signing?”

I hope so. Stay tuned for details.

Duckey… “Sheesh, I’ve been listening to the main theme all day. Its ridiculously good! I’ve got to say…..I think the album will be on par with any Galactica album, if not better.”

Yeah, its definitely a great track… but not even the best one on the record. :)

-Bear

That’s cool that it’s still downloadable for us outside the US types. I’ve never messed around with remixing before, but I expect I might loose many hours in a vortex of “What if it sounded like THIS??” :)

Sites have contests all the time, but few contests let you play around with a music composition, and fewer blogs exist where the composer says, he’ll help you out.

I expect lots of musical goodness here!

Hi Bear,

I’m from Europe and so not able to take part in the official contest.

Nevertheless i did a Remix just for you and the blog readers.
(You should have a price for the best Non US entry ;) )

Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJUicC_ejc8

Fedragal…

Cool. A neat little mash-up of the various sections of the cue. You found some really interesting harmonies in there by combining accompaniments, melodies and inner lines from different sections. It’s like my tune was tossed in a blender. :) I love the ending especially, with the solo ondes martenot.

-Bear

You know, it would be pretty interesting to take a look at a general midi rendition of this track as well.

Okay… I’ve been working on this for a few days now and it’s by no means finished.

My 231109 WIP mix.

http://www.4shared.com/file/157917295/6b4d5fd0/Dark_Void__231109_WIP_Mix_.html

Anyone else playing around with their own version of “Love theme from Dark Void?”

@jonathondezlalour – Awesome!

Also some love for @Fedragal with his brass band intro to Dark Void. :)

What I can’t get out of my head is how this might (or not) match with Assault on the Colony. I keep humming that, and then the melody line from this Hero theme on top of it – which in reality would be ridiculous, but is funny nonetheless.

I’m just curious, is there any chance you’ll upload any sheet music? I personally find that easier to work from than audio files…

Hey Guys,

I redid most of the transitions and changed a tiny bit in the middle (harmonies). The track got better.

Check it out:
http://www.4shared.com/file/158975780/d7f61537/DarkVoidRemixNEW.html

@jonathondezlalour Nice work

@Bear With the redone transitions my remix has a better flow now. What do you think?

Mika… “You know, it would be pretty interesting to take a look at a general midi rendition of this track as well.”

It would. In fact, it would be VERY interesting. But, a magician has to leave some tricks behind the curtain. :)

plainsong… “What I can’t get out of my head is how this might (or not) match with Assault on the Colony.”

There’s a reason for that. I loved the groove from Dark Void so much that I lovingly borrowed it for “Assault on the Colony.” They are basically the same idea. :)

bwinrich… “I’m just curious, is there any chance you’ll upload any sheet music? I personally find that easier to work from than audio files…”

Not in the near future, but I’m planning a blog entry where I break down all the various character themes in the score. That’ll go online when the game comes out.

jonathondezlalour…

Cool. Very trippy and weird.

Fedragal…

This definitely works better. Nice job.

-Bear

Guys,

I just updated the TITAN RAIN entry. The producer wrote a nice little note to all the fans out there:

http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=2916

Check it out…

-Bear

There’s a reason for that. I loved the groove from Dark Void so much that I lovingly borrowed it for “Assault on the Colony.” They are basically the same idea. :)

Which section was it? For some reason, whenever I hear the DV track I zero in on the percussion and it seemed so familiar. Is that it?

It’s mainly the string and percussion groove, the triplet pattern that starts as soon as Galactica FTL’s to the colony.

By the way, Bear, I hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving with lots of yummy food :-)

Macker… “Which section was it?”

MusicPaladin2007 answered this already, but yeah, its the percussion groove and the way its subdivided in the strings. The DV Main Theme and the assault on the colony sequence in “Daybreak” share the same groove.

-Bear

Huhu!
This is a very cool contest, so i have to come up with at last something.
(But keep in mind i´m 21 years old and from Germany so… can´t enter too grrrr)

But it looks fun :3

Here are my 30 first seconds!
http://www.4shared.com/file/162141765/3771fb71/Dark_Void_Remix_Contest_First_.html

Made a lot by myselfe… strings, cymbal, vibraphone, brass etc. Unfortunally i haven´t one of those big “Orchester Libraries”, just Halion Symphonic Orchestra and a bit of Kirk Hunter but i hope i till work.

:) Thank you for this awesome pice of musik!

-Simon

Simon…

An interesting take for sure. The beginning reminded me of the beginning of a Star Trek film, and I mean that as a big compliment! :)

-Bear

Wow, I got to say this is one *awesome* contest. A real shame it’s US only. Still, I’m up for the challenge, though, just for fun’s sake.

So far, this is a very unpolished mashup. The overall buildup and transitions are different, and I’ve also added choirs. I also redid most of the strings to get the passages I wanted. One exception is the passage between 1′00” – 1′30”, where I used Bear’s strings and doubled with custom brass samples.

http://arildtvergrov.no/darkvoid.wma

I hope you guys enjoy it. :) Any ideas on how to improve the piece?

Curses be to the code magicians.

Here is my version, sorry it contains the original since I was letting a friend of mind compare the original to my mix. So here it is, enjoy it guys.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EN5UEAOO

Arild…

Cool. This is a neat idea, I like your re-harmonies. Honestly, what its lacking now is melody. You’ve got the tune coming in around 1:00 but little happens before that to give the piece some forward momentum. Maybe throw in some small melodic fragments here and there, to make the beginning more interesting?

The second half of the piece demonstrates a bit of what I’m talking about, actually. So, maybe just infuse the beginning with some of these same ideas.

RuthlessGravity…

It says I can’t download it, that its “temporarily unavailable.” Did I wait too long?

-Bear

Sorry Bear, apparently Megaupload is acting wierd today, and the links should be up again but I will send a new link through rapidshare.

http://rapidshare.com/files/315474599/Into_The_Void.rar.html

RuthlessGravity…

Whoa. This one is out there. I like it, alot actually. The combined key signatures makes it feel really dissonant and aggressive, moreso than the actual track. I also really like where you’re going with the added electronics and percussion. Personally, I think the snare drum thing you’re adding is ok, but I think there’s a lot of potential with the other electronics you’ve got in the background, the little scratchy sounding ones. Do more of that stuff.

The end of the piece with the percussion only and the little synths in the background is especially cool. Loved that! My suggestion… In that quiet breakdown you’ve created, take a phrase or two of the ghostly ondes martenot melody from the soloists stem and put in the distant background. It might be cool.

Great work…

-Bear

Thanks Bear, yeah I didn’t want to stress too much on the electronics, I had a fear that it was going to ruin the orchestration so I put the electronics in the background and made them a bit quiet.

RuthlessGravity… “I had a fear that it was going to ruin the orchestration”

I say, ruin it! :) Seriously, the original track is about as big and orchestral as you can get already. I’m hoping that some of you will add something wacky and different. Take it somewhere new.

-Bear

Unfortunately I don’t have time for this contest, but have you considered doing a similar BSG contest? I know there was some talk about using BSG material in a contest context earlier – this could be an awesome type of thing to do. Something like ‘do a remix / rearrangement of any BSG theme’ or something, either sampled or from scratch. There wouldn’t even have to be prizes, as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, could be cool to consider.

Boreez… “Unfortunately I don’t have time for this contest, but have you considered doing a similar BSG contest”

I’m thinking about it yeah, it could be very fun. Maybe next year.

-Bear

Dear Bear,

Playing around with BSG music would be, for me a dream come true. I have always wanted to mix it up as to make a track that can be used to skate to, but that’s difficult if you only have your final mixes. So yes please, give us something to play with from BSG.

I would love to get my hands on something containing ‘The Shape of things to come’ in it, or ‘Prelude to War’.

Skating_Lientje

Hi Bear!
I am a web developer by trade, and a musician by heart, so this is a very cool thing you’ve done to participate in the contest in this way. Thank you so much for your time, man. You are so cool.

And I am very excited.

So I tried working with the drums and strings. At first I was playing along with the music to learn the song and get acquainted with the parts that stood out as it’s “essence”. Something you wrote in the responses and I agreed with was “Yeh the point here is not to redo the orchestral track – it’s a remix” … So I used just the strings track, some drum loops and sidechaining, and voila.

As such a fan of your music, whatever you have to say about it will be taken straight to the music, so don’t hesitate to say whatever comes to mind. Just – I don’t want you to worry that you need to worry about hurting my feelings – I just want wisdom straight from the mind of the Bear!

Just … thanks so much Bear!!

As far as how your work has inspired countless hearts and minds, I have also put a track on after the remix that your percussion style definitely influenced.

So cheers man, hope you are doing great!
- Ken

MUSIC @ http://www.myspace.com/kennethcaple

I should clarify “some drum loops”, “My drum loops” – I build and sell loops, so I have hundreds and hundreds that I’ve made “lying around”. Thus – “some” drum loops. :D

Cheers.

califken…

Whoa! Very inventive, man. I like a lot of your ideas. You really took this outside, and that’s cool. I wonder (and this really is just a question, not a suggestion or criticism) if there are places where you could keep the added drums in the triplet-meter feeling of the original percussion. But at the same time, the places where the triplet strings clash against your steady straight drum loops are my favorite sections. So maybe that’s not a good suggestion.

I really like everything I’m hearing here. I like how you’ve broken this up into the various sections, rather than having one continuous beat throughout the whole piece. Very cool stuff.

Is there any chance I could get a downloadable copy?

-Bear

Sure thing man! msg me @ califken at gmail and i will throw it on over. thx! and I will actually try the triplet-meter on the drums and see how it feels. Thanks again Bear!

I don’t live in the US so I can’t enter the competition. But I was still tempted to try to make a remix and this is what I came up with. Although, I’m not sure if I should call it a remix or “heavily inspired” or something in between since I don’t use any of the provided elements and I can’t actually hear what notes I should use. So instead of trying to make it sound like a remixed version of the original song, I went in a completely different direction and tried to keep what I think are they key elements of the original version. I tried to make it so that there’s always something happening and you never really get used to the song. Again, it’s a little bit different but some of you might like it. It starts up soft and then builds up all the way to the end.

http://www.4shared.com/file/168709910/40d9864f/Lobstar_-_Dark_Void_Remix.html

Here is my piece…still need to edit it (just trying to squeeze in the time) – enjoy!

http://drasticmusic.com/samples/dark.mp3

Rspeedy…

Wow, that’s basically an original composition with a few harmonies lifted from my piece. Really cool. I don’t have much else to say, but its got a great vibe. Nice work!

drasko_v…

Holy shit, dude. This thing ROCKS. I love that groove. I would never have imagined that. Very cool. I would just like to hear more of that heavy-bad-ass groove.

My favorite bit is from 1:21 to 1:30. You’re killing me by only letting it play for a few bars. I could listen to that for a lot longer. It comes back at around 1:55 too, but again in only these short bursts. I don’t wanna trample your style, because I like the multiple sections, but let that groove breathe a little bit. Just a thought.

-Bear

Hi Bear, thanks for the notes, much appreciated! Definitely agree with you – but the 5 mb upload limit doesn’t give much room for breathing :))) – This was the only way of squeezing all idea pieces into one piece. Might do a longer edit for you with the grooves. Thanks again, D

drasko…

Really? How are you compressing your file? I thought you could squeeze close to 5 minutes into a 5mb mp3.

-Bear

Yes, my export was 320kbps – maybe you will be treated with longer grooves after all :)

Thanks again, ciao!

D

When I posted my remix, I said that I had spent some time learning the “essence” of the song. So in my case that means playing the keys, arrangements, Reason and Logic. I am not sure if it will be easy to recognize how exactly things were translated over, the one thing is that it mostly revolves around the themes that happen in the original track 0:00-0:15 (the builds) and 0:30 – 0:40 (the main theme?).

It’s essentially just an array of ideas, a scratchpad of musical notes trying to derive a new essence.

it’s DARK VOID Remix …? 3rd item in my playlist http://myspace.com/kennethcaple

Perhaps there’s a good idea in there somewhere. Cheers!!
Ken

drasko_v..

Awesome remix, think you’re gonna rank pretty high with that one! :)

I wasn’t aware of this contest until a couple of days ago. But I live outside the USA, so doesn’t really matter. I did throw together a little something last night though, just for fun. :P

http://www.skinnyt.com/media/dark_void_2.mp3

Tom – thanks for the kind words! Cool vibes on your remix also , good luck!

D

Tom…

Ha!!! This is rad. It sounds like “Dark Void” meets “The Never-Ending Story.” Again, I wouldn’t have thought of this. Very fun. I love the upbeat rock groove.

-Bear

Thanks A lot Bear! This opportunity is out of this world and thanks for putting out an “extra” effort to make sure we get the best remixes possible out there!

My remix of Hero’s Flight can be found here

http://www.myspace.com/ebbsflows

if you have any feedback it is greatly appreciated. I am also having problems uploading the track to the website. If there is any other way to remedy this then it would be a major help but just being able to work with your music was awesome! Thanks again for the opportunity and I love your work.

Brandon (ebbsflows)

Bmauld48…

I love the intro, and how it builds. I like how you chose to start the track with the shime daikos and then introduce the quena (the woodwind solo). I also like how the orchestral elements aren’t even recognizable at first.

I don’t really have any comments. I like the vibe, the groove and how it builds steam gradually, but never stays static so long that it gets boring. Great work! A very original entry.

-Bear

Finito!
http://drasticmusic.com/samples/dark.mp3

All the remixes are very creative, great job everyone, good luck!

Drasko

drasko_v…

Really like this revision. Nice job. And you’re right, all the remixes are very creative. This has been so much fun for me. I’m going to do something like this again next year.

-Bear

“I’m going to do something like this again next year.”

Good! Sad to say I’ve just had so much going on that I just haven’t had time to jump into this one like I did with the web design competition (I’ve had some other projects that I’ve been working on the last few weeks), but I’ll try my hand at future contests :-)

I will tell you though that I took up a personal dare and I’m attempting to transcribe The Signal (From BSG: Revelations). For now I’m starting with the real orchestral arrangement. I thought the hard part would be the rhythms, but honestly the hard part has been some of the weird chord clusters you have, and the way the chords layer and crescendo in and out. I’ve had to fudge a few of them and I honestly wonder how close I really am.

I was in the same boat as musicpaladin2007, however the web design contest also fell at a bad time with me. I don’t think I’d have a chance at all with this one though, but I’m glad to know you plan on doing something like it again. Its a really cool competition and another way to show appreciation to your fans. Thanks Bear!

I’m looking forward to hearing the winner’s remix! Good luck to everyone who entered!

Hi Bear – I don’t think I entered my e mail in the info box when submitting the track – here it is just in case: drasko@drasticmusic.com

Thank you!

D

musicpaladin2007… “I will tell you though that I took up a personal dare and I’m attempting to transcribe The Signal (From BSG: Revelations)”

May the lords of Kobol help you, sir! And, yes, harmonically the piece is more complicated than rhythmically. However, the metric modulation at the end is a bitch.

BTW, everyone, I’m assuming that you’ve all seen the new entry that a winner was announced for this contest!
