BSG Music is Finally on iTunes!

Posted by Bear McCreary on November 7th, 2009

Finally… Finally… Finally!

I’ve been teasing you loyal blog readers about a big announcement for weeks, and here it is: NBC Universal and Apple have finally worked out their issues and, at long last, my scores for Battlestar Galactica are available on iTunes.

This has been an annoyingly arduous process for me.  Seeing the episodes in the top downloads on iTunes every week for years while my scores were relegated to physicals discs was a drag.  So, this is a big step.  But we’re still only halfway there. There’s a bunch of material that’s supposed to be there still missing (like Season 1 for example!). The Eureka soundtrack will also be on iTunes soon.

Best of all, there is (and will be even more) exclusive iTunes content available.  First up, the world premiere music video and single of Apocalypse (Theme from ‘The Plan’)” performed live by the Battlestar Galactica Orchestra in concert are now on iTunes.

Raya Yarbrough sings the Gayatri Mantra in the “Apocalypse” video.

This video captures all the energy and intensity of our live performances this summer.  If you missed the shows, this is the next best thing.  And if you were there, you can relive it again, any time you want.  Directed and edited by Matthew Gilna and mixed by Steve Kaplan, this video is the culmination of many months of work by my incredible orchestra and production team.  I’m thrilled to be working with these incredible artists and to finally have the chance to share this with all of you!  What do you guys think of it?  Does it rock or what?

Tina Guo shreds an electric cello solo that has to be seen to be believed!

In all fairness, I have to warn you that the audio on the clip is currently mono for some maddening reason and iTunes is making me crazy trying to get them to fix it.  We delivered amazing stereo and 5.1 mixes of the track, so this is frakkin’ annoying for an audiophile like myself.  As soon as they fix this, I’ll let you guys know.  I’m really torn because I want you all to experience this video, but it’s probably worth waiting a few more days to see if the problem gets fixed by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Still, even in mono, this video kicks ass.  And there’s also an audio single of this song available as well, making it the first soundtrack music from “The Plan” available anywhere.  However, iTunes frakked up the artist name and accidentally listed video director Matthew Gilna as the artist for the single!  This will be fixed in the next couple days, and correctly listed as “Bear McCreary and the BSG Orchestra” but for now, you can download an mp3 of “Apocalypse” apparently performed by Matthew Gilna and the BSG Orchestra.  :)

The percussion section rocks!

Chris Bleth switches his duduks in the foreground, while Brendan and Raya sing in the background.

At the end of the song, Brendan raises his guitar up to the Rock Gods of Kobol.  I thought he was just being theatrical.  It turns out his guitar strap broke literally seconds before the end of the song (you can see it happen in the video) and he decided to make lemonade out of the situation.  What a performer!

And this is just the beginning.  My team and I are sitting on footage and recordings of 25+ songs from our various Battlestar concerts.  But I need to convince the powers-that-be that there are enough fans out there who want this material to justify finishing it.  We could do a series of iTunes videos, a full concert DVD, a live album… anything is possible!  I want this stuff to get out there and you want to experience it.  So, help me send a message to NBC and iTunes that BSG fans want to see and hear more of the BSG Orchestra!  If enough people download this first video and single, I know we’ll be able to deliver more.

So Say We All!

I just changed the iTunes answer in my FAQ. Wow, that felt good. I want to crack open some champagne or something, because that question has been on my FAQ since the dawn of the blog!

Bear,

I’m eagerly anticipating the videos / DVD. I would also love a an album! I attended your concert at the Roxy and in San Diego! I especially want on the CD, if possible, when everyone was saying So Say We All…then the drums came blasting for a good minute, then the rest of the gang came out to play the Colonial Theme!

Please let us all know what will it take to make this happen. Sure we can download from iTunes, but what else can we as fans do? We don’t want you to keep all of that music to yourself. Hell, I think all of us would love a B-side track CD with more from the BSG Seasons!

By the way, just finished the Plan, I nearly jumped when you incorporated Something Dark is Coming ( you might remember me mentioning that to you during the signing).

Anyway, please keep us informed, and PLEASE keep doing these concerts. I don’t think anyone will ever think that it’s getting old.

Don’t you have a bottle of scotch you’ve been saving or something for just this occasion?

Awesome to see the stuff up there. I’ll download the stuff as soon as the information is right. I’m just a stickler about that sorta stuff and it’d drive me OCD.

Can’t wait to tell all my friends they can download All Along the Watchtower as a single! =D

As much as I prefer to get original CDs for special productions like Battlestar Galactica, it’s fantastic to see you on iTunes !!!

About bloody time !!!

First of all: Major wootage for getting stuff on iTunes. It definitely deserves some sort of celebration.

Buuut (and I sorta hate to be the one to say this) what about the rest of us? Everyone outside the US is stuck with the 30 second previews (which are awesome by the way). So yeah, is there anything on when the rest of us will be able to get our mitts on this stuff?

PS. I’ve also been shamelessly promoting this on twitter.

jonathondezlalour…”Buuut (and I sorta hate to be the one to say this) what about the rest of us?”

Forgot to mention this. These ARE GOING TO BE INTERNATIONAL, but it just takes longer. It would have delayed the US launch, so we announced this stuff first. But, eventually all these soundtracks will be international iTunes as well. So say we all!

-Bear

Congrats! That single of Apocalypse is rockin! I have to admit I made a really good quality rip of the end credits the other day that I am promptly replacing with this, as it’s more awesome and a lot longer!

FRAK YES! My gods, you rock. This news has really made my day. Can’t wait for them to make their way onto the UK iTunes store, I’ll be there ready to purchase them as soon as they show their heads. Now, excuse me while I go have a heart attack from all the excitement.

Awesome, Bear. Too bad it took so long to work things out with Apple and Universal, but here it is, at last!

By the way, Tina Guo rocks my world.

“So, help me send a message to NBC and iTunes that BSG fans want to see and hear more of the BSG Orchestra! If enough people download this first video and single, I know we’ll be able to deliver more.”

I’ve done my part, Bear. We were at the House of Blues for the concert, and would LOVE to have the live versions of pieces like Wayward Soldier and others. The concert frakkin’ ROCKED!

Cannot wait for everything to hit our iTunes over here, I raise a bottle of Ambrosia in toast to you!

Bear, do you know what resolution it’s in on iTunes? 480p? 720p?

If it’s in 720p, I might have finally found a reason to make me want iTunes, assuming there’s no Blu-ray planned…

Downloaded. I’m so excited! The HoB concert was so wonderful, I look forward to reliving it through the video. Thanks for all you do!

cory… “Bear, do you know what resolution it’s in on iTunes? 480p? 720p?”

Looks like video size is 640×360. But we delivered them a hi-def master, so I’m hoping it’ll be availabe in hi-def soon.

-Bear

I’ve only downloaded stuff from itunes like… less than a handful of times after all these years, but I couldn’t go without this. Purely AWESOME. I need a DVD of everything… and then the sequel.

I was all excited for a minute there, but then I realised it wasn’t in the Australian iTunes Store :(

I’m going to pirate “Apocalypse” for now, but I promise I’ll purchase it when it becomes available on the Australian store.

Ah, you had me all excited for new Battlestar music. But as usual, iTunes fails to deliver (to international customers). I wouldn’t be so annoyed if it weren’t for the fact that the show was actually filmed here. I suppose it just makes it all the more ironic.

I really do hope you’re right about it being available internationally, but iTunes likes to take its time with things – after all, it only took us how many years to even have TV shows available on iTunes Canada?

But anyways, the video and song sound truly amazing! Good work!

Please don’t do just iTunes videos. That would be excluding the fans outside the US. The rest of the world won’t get to see it at all. :(

See, NBC/Universal might OK international distribution, but the iTunes store outside the US seriously seriously sucks. We don’t have a video part of the store, just audio, podcasts, and the Appstore.

@Plainsong…

I dunno what part of the world you’re living in, but yeah… the iTunes store should have more than that in it. My iTunes store has video. I got:
Music, Films, TV Programmes, App Store, Podcasts, Audiobooks and iTunesU (whatever that last one is)

@jonathondezlalour – I’m in Helsinki, Finland – which as far as iTunes is concerned would be the EU iTunes store.

We have Music, App Store, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and iTunesU.

That’s it, no videos unless they’re released as podcasts, or under iTunesU which would never happen. We don’t get movie trailers, or TV episodes, or Music Videos even. International griping about the iTunes store content has been going on for some time.

Social comments and analytics for this post…

This post was mentioned on Twitter by atfmb: RT @JohnAnealio: BSG Music is finally on iTunes! : http://bit.ly/Wm02R (FINALLY! HOLY CRAP!)…

That music video is awesome! There’s so much going on it takes multiple viewings to catch everything. I can’t believe how much energy you and the band are putting out. I would LOVE a DVD of this concert. I would also love a promotional US tour that hits the East Coast (Washington, DC would be nice).

Oh, and congrats on the iTunes thing. I can’t believe how long that took! Will you have MP3s on amazon.com soon too? I just noticed that “Colonial Anthem” is listed as “Colonial Album”. What kind of monkeys do they have working at iTunes anyway?

Holy Cylons! You are FINALLY on iTunes!

I just bought the Season 4 Soundtrack… It took me a while to find it in my library after downloading because the name is “Origianal Soundtrack – Battlestar Galactica: Season 4″…. I would prefer that the name start with “Battlestar Galactica” for sorting reasons… Oh well, I’m changing the album name myself anyways, because “original” is not spelled “orgianal” either.

I love, love, love the music, however… And, I’ll be buying the others from iTunes as well… I’m really hoping that music from the recent Stu Phillips collaborative concert will be available on iTunes, too.

As follow up re: my comment above about naming for the iTunes store… I want to point out the typo in the Season 4 title, but I also suggest using the phrase “Original Soundtrack” as a suffix.

If you browse the iTunes store currently and search for your albums… It’s difficult to tell which season is which, because the season # is truncated in most views and the cover thumbnails are too small for the user to discover which album is which season.

Just an observation… But again… I’m happy these are finally on iTunes… I’ve been searching for a while.

Wait… hold on… your iTunes “Artist Page” (the page that lists all your albums) categorizes you under: Music > World > Afro-Beat > Bear McCreary. Weird…shouldn’t you be under SOUNDTRACKS?

toddmcw & silverlain…

Thanks for pointing all that out. Yeah, the list of what they got wrong uploading these to iTunes just goes on and on. These mistakes were really making me mad at first and they’ve actually reached the point where its just hilarious now.

I will get them to fix all of this, but it will take time. Frak, it took 6 years just to get to iTunes, so I’m just grateful to be there at all.

Besides, now I’m fulfilling my life-long dream of becoming a world famous AFRO BEAT WORLD MUSIC artist. Yay…

-Bear

That concert was the best one I saw in a long time. I was ecstatic to be able to relive a bit of it, even though only one song. I will be the FIRST to buy a DVD of the entire 25 pieces. The sooner you can make it, the better!

Any chance the mini-series soundtrack will make it to iTunes as well? I know that’s not 100% Bear, but it’s the only piece I’m missing at the moment. :-)

Just downloaded “Apocalypse” from iTunes–wow! What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Great music. Love every note, but being the old fashioned sort I would love to see the score from The Plan on CD (to accompany the four other seasons of BSG in my collection). What are the odds of that happening sometime in the future?

I prefer to own my music on purchased CDs, but I’m up for any way to get more of your BSG music Bear. “Apocalypse” was only the second time I’ve purchased from iTunes, the first being the theme from the TV show Journeyman. I attended both Friday and Saturday HOB concerts, and cannot wait for more from them.

I thought you were able to publish your own stuff to iTunes using the “iTunes Producer” application (once you were an approved artist. This app (which is probably Mac-only) arranges/labels tracks, sets cover art etc.

Bear, do you have any thoughts about quality differences between iTunes 256K mp4 audio vs CDs?

Finally on iTunes! This is great news!

Of course, every Bear fan I know has already bought all of their CDs, but that only means that now I get to direct newbies to iTunes!

Great News Bear.

Hopefully this will not become the only method of distribution Though . I Like Lossless :D. But if it means we get some more stuff then i am all for it

I was at the House of Blues this summer and had a really good feeling about future ROCKIN’ CONCERT DVDS with all the camera work that was being done! Another FRAK YES vote to the possibility of concert DVDs/CDs/YouTube/whatever!

I notice the video for “Apocalypse” is listed as being a “clean” version. I can’t help but wonder what might be in the “dirty” version.

@Painaporo: Bears gone wild!

Does this mean no chance of a CD?

Will you be selling any of the unreleased stuff on your website here?

ps. LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR WORK!

I was gonna wait until the Apocalypse video and music came out in the UK iTunes store. I failed. Miserably. I paid one of my Tweeple to download ‘em for me and then send ‘em to me. I couldn’t wait. And I’m kinda glad that I didn’t. It was driving me nutty knowing the music was just out of reach. So yeah, now the live version of Apocalypse is sat in my Best of Battlestar Galactica playlist which I’m really thinking needs a 3rd part to it ’cause I have nothing in there from Daybreak.

Hate to bring this up but I live in the US and all I see is the video. NO SINGLE. Is this just me or is it yet another entry into iTunes long list of Frakups?

Hey Bear,

Two questions for you, they may have been asked elsewhere in your blog so I apologize if they have.

First, what piece of music from Battlestar Galactica did you find the most enjoyment in composing?

Secondly, what piece of music from Battlestar Galactica do you find the most enjoyment from listening to?

It’s just something I thought of today while watching The Plan when I noticed a excerpt from Something Dark Is Coming, which is one of my favorite pieces from BSG. Although, my favorite is still All Along The Watchtower.

Alert to BSG’ers. This week NPR Music is asking for suggestions for their Top Music of the Decade (2000-2010). Most of what’s up there now is pretty predictable. I want to see Bear’s four BSG albums up there, so he can use that as well to get some more concert dates and venues and concert films. Their criteria is the music we’ll still be listening to and talking about years from now. Not simply what is the present, but what is the future.
So say we all.
Here is the link:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2009/11/nominate_the_decades_most_impo.html

I am very glad that the material is getting out there for the masses, Bear! My only concern is that I hope all the material will be made available on CD and DVD. While iTunes is great to get the stuff out there, I am old school. I prefer to have the highest quality, uncompressed versions available, so I am indeed a bit concerned that I will miss out on any iTunes “exclusive” content. The only thing I ever bought on there was John Barry’s incredible score for the film The Black Hole. At least for now, the powers-that-be are only allowing that soundtrack to be available in iTunes format. I remastered it and am happy, but would prefer a studio-released CD. So, I guess what I’m trying to say in all this blathering, is that I would love to continue supporting this wonderful music, just don’t forget us folks that like to have a physical copy of EVERY little thing you do!

Will we ever get an album with music from The Plan and Razor?Apocalypse is a great song to have by itself but what about the beginning score as well as Razor music?

Oh and Bear one other thing. If another dvd or telemovie is made(or also use in it caprica) you should throw in a little bit of a Terminator tune.Mainly the famous dunt duh duh part.Because all of this has happened before and will happen again.

Wow, this is amazing. I so badly wanted to see those concerts but alas flying from South Africa to USA is not cheap.
After spending 30 min on iTunes trying to figure out how to download the vids I discovered (to my horror) that they don’t sell music to SA and only have an App Store down here :( Any ideas?
I hope you’ll release a DVD of the concert/s and the much wanted soundtrack to Razor and The Plan (You told me ages ago that there might be one :) )

As always, awesome work!
Your faithful South African fan :P
Tim

sjml… “Any chance the mini-series soundtrack will make it to iTunes as well?”

I certainly hope so, and assume its one of the ones that simply hasn’t made it up there yet.

88Redroc… “but being the old fashioned sort I would love to see the score from The Plan on CD (to accompany the four other seasons of BSG in my collection). What are the odds of that happening sometime in the future?”

See my entry about THE PLAN from a few weeks ago, where I addressed this. Yes, a “Plan” physical CD is in the works, with a tentative February release date.

toddmcw… “I thought you were able to publish your own stuff to iTunes using the “iTunes Producer” application”

Sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, the operative word there being “your OWN stuff.” I don’t OWN the BSG music, NBC Uni does, so the ball has always been in their court to get this stuff on iTunes. If it were up to me, we would’ve been there from day one!

“Bear, do you have any thoughts about quality differences between iTunes 256K mp4 audio vs CDs?”

Yes, I do. CDs sounds good. 256K mp4s are almost acceptable, but still sound pretty bad. It’s too bad.

Alyssa… “Of course, every Bear fan I know has already bought all of their CDs, but that only means that now I get to direct newbies to iTunes!”

That’s EXACTLY what I’m hoping happens. I’d love it if you guys could convert some new BSG fans by sending them over to iTunes. I realize that a CD purchase is too much for people to take a risk on sometimes, so the ability to buy only one track makes it easy to try things out. :)

-Bear

George Fox… “Hopefully this will not become the only method of distribution Though . I Like Lossless :D. But if it means we get some more stuff then i am all for it”

Couldn’t agree more.

Painaporo… “I notice the video for “Apocalypse” is listed as being a “clean” version. I can’t help but wonder what might be in the “dirty” version.”

I saw that too. Hilarious. Just slip a bunch of “mothaf&%^a”s into the Gayatri Mantra and make it the gangsta rap version. It would be a hip hop crossover hit.

dynamicah… “Does this mean no chance of a CD?”

No. It doesn’t mean that at all. :)

Tekiewolf… “First, what piece of music from Battlestar Galactica did you find the most enjoyment in composing?”

I don’t know if I find enjoyment in composing. Writing music is exhausting and draining. I enjoy having FINISHED a composition very much, though, and I think that no piece of music was better to finish than “Diaspora Oratorio,” but that’s because writing it was hell on Earth.

“Secondly, what piece of music from Battlestar Galactica do you find the most enjoyment from listening to?”

That’s a tough one. The piece I enjoy listening to the most might be Watchtower or Black Market.

Ravenna… “This week NPR Music is asking for suggestions for their Top Music of the Decade (2000-2010)”

Good idea!!!

JediTray… “While iTunes is great to get the stuff out there, I am old school. I prefer to have the highest quality, uncompressed versions available, so I am indeed a bit concerned that I will miss out on any iTunes “exclusive” content.”

I certainly hope that’s possible. I think I’ll always want to put out physical discs. With the music videos its tougher, because its hard to know if there are enough people out there who really want to see them. Hopefully iTunes sales of the “Apocalypse” video will help answer that question. But, I agree with you. I don’t feel like I really own an album unless I have the liner notes and a full-res version of it somewhere.

Battlestar Commander… “Will we ever get an album with music from The Plan and Razor?”

Yes. Check THE PLAN post from a few weeks ago.

-Bear

tcclarke… “After spending 30 min on iTunes trying to figure out how to download the vids I discovered (to my horror) that they don’t sell music to SA and only have an App Store down here”

That’s too bad. If enough people download this, then I’m hoping we can do a live DVD and concert album, so in that case, you could still get the whole thing. Keep an eye out here on the blog in the coming months and we’ll see what we can make happen.

kbiddy42… “Hate to bring this up but I live in the US and all I see is the video. NO SINGLE. Is this just me or is it yet another entry into iTunes long list of Frakups?”

Yeah, its the iTunes Frakup. I’ll bet you’re searching for my name. The single was erroneously published under the artist name “Matthew Gilna” (no he didn’t write it! He’s the director of the music video). So, do a search there and I think it’ll turn up. Silly mistakes we’re hoping to fix…

-Bear

Here’s one vote for a concert DVD, or at the very least, a live album! I would love to have that awesome extended edition of Pegasus, or the different-than-the-original-but-awesome live version of Pasacaglia.

And congrats for getting on iTunes. I hope that will get you some more well-deserved exposure among music lovers.

Live concert CD and DVD would be awesome! Just make sure they available down here :)
Now if only you could organise for a signed CD down here… That would be frakking perfect :)
Keep it up man, loved The Plan and its score

Does anyone know which night this video is from? I was at the the Friday and Saturday shows but I’m not sure. Help!

-Ian

Bear any chance of getting the collective works released on DVD or Blu Ray for optimal audio quality?

Bear,

Just want to say a big thanks for having the “Apocalypse” single on iTunes even if it’s really Matthew Gilna’s ha ha :)

You gotta laugh at these iTunes Frak ups. Do you know yet if iTunes has the stereo video of “Apocalypse” yet? I would love to see a concert video in the future.

I have to say that I’ve been going to live shows on and off for almost 20 years and I’ve never seen a band of musicians play with the energy, passion, and heart that your band plays with. Amazing work pure and simple, and while I’m thinking of it watching Paul Cartwright play that fiddle is inspiring I can see why the Comic-Con audience was chanting for him before you guys even came on stage!

sorry guys gotta post again, Tina Guo is the Frakkin’ Bomb! You aren’t supposed to do things like that with a Cello. Amazing!

“Does anyone know which night this video is from? I was at the the Friday and Saturday shows but I’m not sure. Help!

-Ian”

It’s the Saturday night show. I saw myself in the audience! :)

>I notice the video for “Apocalypse” is listed as being a “clean” version. I can’t help but wonder what might be in the “dirty” version.<

Radiation.
Obviously. :P

I posted this on your Facebook page but I do hope that you consider coming to Atlanta around DragonCon weekend. It would be a treat to see the show East Coast style. :) Especially with all new Caprica music as well since Season 1 should have aired by then. Who knows maybe you can get Eric Stoltz to come up on stage and help out on a Greystone Oratorio or something.

This is great news! I’m so glad that BSG music is still alive and kicking, and you are even churning out new stuff in the BSG world.
Slightly off topic: Is there any chance we will get to see the piano sheet music for Dreilide Thrace’s Sonata go on sale any time soon? I desperately, desperately want to learn this piece, as I think it is simply gorgeous.

One more thought about the live material…. I sincerely hope that the studio, or whoever has the final say-so, doesn’t follow the trend that so many artists have used for their live material. To keep costs down and facilitate a single disc, the CD doesn’t have all the songs that appear on the DVD. I would much rather shell out a couple more bucks for a double CD!

Hey Bear, when are you guys coming to New York? I’m dying to see you in concert, and I have some new Battlestar converts I need to bring too!

“Apocalypse” is amazing. The music was great throughout “The Plan”, but I almost fell out of my chair when I hear the new theme over the end credits. Amazing work. As a filmmaker and classically-trained musician, I am truly inspired by your music…and have been for the last four years!

It’s wonderful to see your stuff is on itunes at last! (though i never knew my favorite composer was a AFRO BEAT WORLD MUSIC master) I’m loving the live version of Apocalypse and the Video as well. I’ve already ripped the end titles from the plan and listened to them 50 times, now I get to listen to it 50 more times with the new arrangement! (My roommates think I’m insane).

I am however very dissapointed to see that those at the top are still unwilling to release everything from the concert (Despite the awesome sales of the season 4 soundtrack).

It dosen’t seem to make much sense to my squeaky yellow ducky mind. The concert happened, the footage was recorded and shot, and while there needs to be a little editing that can’t cost tens of thousands of dollars. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t authorize a release – Heck, I’ll edit it for you for free (If only they let you do that), that way if you sell 100 copies you can earn approximately 50 cents for everyone in the band! Woah! But in all seriousness, even if it bombs abysmally, it’s going to make SOME money since the production already happened.

This really confuses me about soundtracks for everything else in the world as well. Even if you don’t expect to sell many, the music is already recorded! While giving things the BSG soundtrack treatment is likely expensive, throwing the entire movie score onto a disc with a few track breaks, turning the DVD box into a square and throwing it up on itunes can’t cost a lot (Though naturally this is far from ideal, but infinetly better then never getting it otu at all). So why dosen’t it happen more often?

Christopher Franke notably did this for Babylon 5 (he just took the 50 minute episode backdrop and put it onto a disc that lasted about 50 mintues). While I loved the suites much more, there was a lot of fantastic stuff that never would have gotten out otherwise. I doubt he sold a ton of copies, but he did it for something like 20+ episodes.

In any case, however the concert can get out there, I’m all for it. If it comes down to a choice, I pick the DVD. I can always rip the songs out myself. :)

Keep up the great work! I have this vision of the future. A live DVD and CD is released, it does great, the BSG orchestra comes to Dallas and all is perfect. A poor little Duck can dream can’t he?

empireofdc… “Bear any chance of getting the collective works released on DVD or Blu Ray for optimal audio quality?”

A good chance. I’d LOVE to do a BluRay, with a full 5.1 mix. If there’s enough interest, I think it’ll happen.

M104… “Do you know yet if iTunes has the stereo video of “Apocalypse” yet? ”

Not yet, but we’re actively moving on getting all this stuff fixed.

Uptowngirl… “I posted this on your Facebook page but I do hope that you consider coming to Atlanta around DragonCon weekend.”

I’d love to be there. Every year I try to get out there but something else comes up. Richard Hatch keeps telling me its the best convention in the world!

serenity5×5… “Is there any chance we will get to see the piano sheet music for Dreilide Thrace’s Sonata go on sale any time soon?”

“Any chance,” most certainly… “soon?” Probably early next year. But, it will happen. I promise!

Duckey… “Christopher Franke notably did this for Babylon 5″

I hear ya, but I must confess, I don’t think I’d ever do something like that with BSG. The cues that work incredibly on the air can oftentimes be boring as hell to listen to on their own. I vastly prefer to listen to the re-edited and re-mastered “album versions.” I’d hate to clutter up the soundtracks I have out with stuff that doesn’t measure up to my admittedly stupidly high standards of quality. Maybe one day, I’ll release episode-by-episode volumes, but honestly, the best stuff is already out there.

However, next year I will do a disc of un-released odds-n-ends from throughout all the seasons and I think it will cover basically everything unreleased that people still want.

-Bear

Bear,

any hope for non-users of Itunes? I download mp3’s from Amazon and HMV digital download.
thanks
Dan
P.S. ‘The Line’ is the best ‘Adama speech’ music of the whole series! AWESOME Listen.

Here’s another vote for a full lenght Blue-ray of you concerts!

I think it’s great to see your stuff on iTunes, considering how your “other online sales” on Amazon did so well. But can I say that I don’t like Apple? And I hate iTunes and what it stands for in my eyes (cheap, bad quality music, great margins for big companies while the artists get very little). So when some suits tell you that BSG fans are a demographic that are drawn to digital media and all that “cool online stuff” (and they don’t need a physical release) – tell them that they are morons and show them your blog! Ha!

We want physical copies and we want high quality. So say we all!

danielday… “any hope for non-users of Itunes?”

I wouldn’t hold my breath. Just getting on iTunes took freakin’ 7 years. I’m just grateful that digital versions are available ANYWHERE. However, I assume that being on iTunes will make it easier now for NBC to eventually branch us out to other vendors. But, one step at a time.

keytars_forever… “We want physical copies and we want high quality. So say we all!”

With all my stuff, you’ll always have that because I share that philosophy. These iTunes videos are an experiment for sure, but I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to do a full-length kick ass concert film for you guys!

-Bear

That would be awesome Bear. I think we’d all pick up a DVD (and I’m still waiting to see how your Caprica sound evolves from the Pilot soundtrack CD)

Awesome news. I’ve listened to the single quite a few times now on my 5.1 system, and it sounds great. I’m waiting for the video to be fixed so I can see and hear it in full quality.

Also, did anyone else notice the album artwork in iTunes for the single?

I laughed when I saw it- is this the new BSG Orchestra album artwork? If so, I think it’s very cool.

I second the vote for a non-iTunes source like Amazon. And I’d LOVE to be able to buy the concert video on blu-ray. Or will settle for standard DVD. :)

Any source that would be not just US-only would be fine with me. :(

But I’m also old-school when it comes to quality. Until they start releasing lossless, I’ll also throw my votes in for all the CD, DVD, Blu-ray releases you want to do!

Well, the “mono video” issue has been fixed. Now, its in “totally frakked up stereo.” It sounds pretty weird, but not quite as awful as the mono sounded. Sigh. At least its a STEP in the right direction. :) I’ll keep you guys posted. We’re gonna fix this damn thing if its the last thing I ever do!!!

-Bear

sm482… “I laughed when I saw it- is this the new BSG Orchestra album artwork?”

I don’t know. You guys dig it?

-Bear

Are you kidding? I’ll take two t-shirts, a sticker, and I’m putting it on my Droid’s homescreen.

Possibly a bit late to the party this comment, but hey ho…

Continuing the theme of tardiness, I’ve just finally finished watching the complete BSG run (although to be fair I’ve yet to watch The Plan). I just thought I’d add my ha’pennorth to the praise heaped upon the programme – it is without doubt the ONLY TV programme I have watched religiously for probably a decade, and its probably the only programme where I’ve not even thought twice about buying the DVDs.

And a large part of that is down to Bear McCreary. After being wowed by the incredible acting, plotting, scripting, SFX, sound and cinematography, it became apparent around the end of Season 1 that the music was absolutely fantastic. I don’t think I’ve heard anything as good on any TV programme since Edge of Darkness (which, to be fair, was Eric Clapton, so we’re in good company there…). And it got better, and better as it went on, right up to and including the very last track in Daybreak Pt.3. How on earth you made something so different, yet so beautiful..Lord, I wish I had that artistic talent!

I’ve just bought my first ever soundtrack album too – the Final Season.

So, thank you Bear McCreary, for all of it.

PS I can’t seem to find you anywhere in iTunes..is there a restriction to the US only?

@Bluebeard – yeah all the iTunes stuff seems to be US-centric. That only makes me sad for the videos, since I know they’ll only release a DVD or Blu-ray if the download is popular… but the people who want to buy it can’t frakking download it..

But for the record, all my griping here isn’t at Bear – I mean unless he’s secretly running Apple, Universal, and the EU Parliament. I’m happy that this stuff is getting out there.

If you haven’t already, I’d suggest getting the soundtracks on CD. The audio quality is going to be loads better if you use a decent cd player, or rip it to your library as lossless. I guess it goes without saying that this music deserves better than iBuds as well. :)

Hopefully the downloads are popular, and the powers that be will let Bear and Co. release a live concert DVD/Blu-ray!

To reply to the rest, So Say We All!

LOVE the video. Awesome, awesome, awesome!

There are moments that are ‘chill’ inducing!

You say there’s a good chance for a DVD/Blu-Ray release? Can’t frakkin’ wait! (Go Blu!)

Hey, wow… the video is now available in stereo, so I went and downloaded it. Holy FRAK. “Apocalypse” rocked in audio, but the video was frakkin’ unbelievably asweomse. Tina Guo did things to her cello that I didn’t think were musically possible with a bowed instrument, and which might well be illegal in several Midwestern states to boot.

And… the passion that all of you have in your music is so obvious. Raya looks so ethereal when she sings, Brendan looks ecstatic, and Bear, well, you are surely passionate, but we don’t see a lot of you in that video because you are buried behind banks of keyboards like Rick Wakeman of Yes. :)

Bear, I think I speak for all of your fans when I say that I hope the music and video sell well enough to convince The Powers That Be to get the BSG Orchestra on tour – you will have legions of fans flocking to your shows wherever you go. Or, at least a DVD of the concerts!

You’re charting a new path for music – an orchestra dedicated to performing the unique music of a unique television show. Let’s hope it is a success! So say we all!

I downloaded Apocalypse in mono and almost blew out my speakers, and now I will download it in stereo frakked up or not. The video makes my heart pound and adrenaline starts racing through my body. I would buy the DVD of that concert in a New York minute, so please tell the “powers” there is an audience for it.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I am never certain of much in this world, but when I was in San Diego all three nights for the BGO concerts, I was never more certain I was exactly where I needed to be. There is something unique about your music Bear that is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. It moves me, inspires me, and has changed my life. Tell that to the big boys, hell give me their number or email and I will tell them until they are sick of me.

I LOVE the artwork! I’ll take a t-shirt, sticker, bumper sticker, button you name it. It will go with the poster I already have hanging in my house.

Take good care, and I will be listening tonight to someone who likes to sing for Cylons. :-)

So say we all…

I love the artwork as well—bought the poster of it at the House of Blues concert. :)

The video is frakking amazing, and even cooler that it’s from the night my friend and I went to the show (although I know it would have been incredible no matter what night the video was from!). I’m trying to use it to attract new fans by telling people that they won’t regret buying it simply because of Tina Guo’s fan-frakkin-tasting electric cello solo! :D

Wonder if NBC would let you post one of the soundtrack songs as the free iTunes single of the week, might bring in some new fans (as well as let BSG fans who don’t come to the blog know that the soundtracks are now available there)…it’s worked really well for some other small bands I’ve known, like Owl City—he was just a single guy recording CDs on his laptop with two albums to his name, then the single from his third album was one of the iTunes free downloads of the week and now he’s hit #1 on a bunch of the music charts.

I probably refreshed the blog 50 times a day for a week then I got real busy with my work and am just now getting a chance to reply to this.
This is fantastic news. I’m happy that you finally got your awesome work on iTunes. I hope you gain even more success from this.
I will definitely be purchasing any concert video footage.

I downloaded the video in mono, and apparently music and videos are 1 time downloads only because when I try to download again it forces me to purchase it. Not that I mind to spend another $1.50 on an awesome video, its well worth it. I’ll download it 3+ times if I have to as long as you are making profit. I’d hate for Apple/iTunes to profit from their screw ups though.

Also, I would DEFINITELY buy any dvd (preferably bluray) releases of concert footage as well as a live album.

Congrats!

Presenting…for your listening pleasure…my newest arrangement, appropriately themed :-)

I may go back and add mallet parts later so don’t be surprised if you go back later and there’s more added.

Hip Hip Hooray! Finally! What were TPTB waiting for? Of course you have people willing to buy your music! Don’t we show up at concerts and CD signings and buy, buy, buy your CDs? We are here for your Bear, no worries. :)

Jonny Boy… “Are you kidding? I’ll take two t-shirts, a sticker, and I’m putting it on my Droid’s homescreen.”

It’s the background on my phone too. :)

bluebeard… “PS I can’t seem to find you anywhere in iTunes..is there a restriction to the US only?”

For now. If it doesn’t show up internationally in the next few weeks, let us know and we’ll look into it. International always takes longer for legal reasons.

Zbeeblebrox… “but we don’t see a lot of you in that video because you are buried behind banks of keyboards like Rick Wakeman of Yes.”

That’s where I spend most of the concerts. The only piece where I did a little more was “The Dance.” Then, I picked up my accordion and rocked out. (Not joking, it kicked ass)

SueN…

Heard you made it to Raya’s shows in the Bay Area! Cool!

SeskaLien… “Wonder if NBC would let you post one of the soundtrack songs as the free iTunes single of the week”

Not a bad idea. I actually didn’t realize there was a “free single” section of iTunes. That would be very cool. Something to look into for the future.

MattH… “I downloaded the video in mono, and apparently music and videos are 1 time downloads only because when I try to download again it forces me to purchase it.”

Unfortunately that’s the case. I was downloading it every day checking to see if the error was fixed, so, yeah, I’ve dropped like ten bucks on the damn thing. Trust me, though, downloading it again will be worth it for the full corrected audio.

musicpaladin2007… “Presenting…for your listening pleasure…my newest arrangement, appropriately themed :-)”

Awesome work!

A note on the updated/fixed Apocalypse music video debacle: once you (Bear) announced that the updated version was available, I emailed iTunes customer support. I explained the situation, and they were more than happy to fix everything for me (by re-adding the video to my account). All I had to do then was delete the mono version, click “Check for purchases”, and that was that.

Hope everyone has the same luck I did.

@Bear: I love that graphic.. in fact, I did a strenuous bit of enlargement filtering on that super tiny twitter icon a few months ago and made myself a shirt out of it. http://i36.tinypic.com/2cdj2f9.png

I’d definitely love to buy some official BSG swag though! You’re missing a golden opportunity every day you delay this :)

Geez, I’m so frakking late on commenting on this thread! LOVED the video Bear and I’m so happy you’re on iTunes so the rest of the (US only) world can find you – hopefully the international stuff can get sorted out soon! I’m still a purist when it comes to CDs so I’ll be picking up a hard copy of The Plan/Razor. And normally I don’t download much on iTunes but anything that’s like this vid, I’ll do it gladly! Yes, I’ll purchase from iTunes the 25 extra tracks, more vids, more concert footage and all of that with fries on the side please! :D

One more note about this vid – AMAZING job on the editing, direction and how it was put together – well done! I was at the Thursday night HOB concert and felt that I’d traveled back (or is it slightly forward since the vid is from the Sat concert?) in time since it was so damn well done. I’ve watched concert vids that I’ve attended after the event and it just didn’t hold the same energy, the same sense of being there, the same magic if you will. This video did – frakking awesome! I love reliving that part of the concert and can’t wait for more concert vids!

Congrats again on getting on iTunes!

Bear, finally seen the video… loved it. Quick query though – is this from the friday night or edited from all 3? [Purely from a selfish point of view as I was stood immediately in front of you, front row, on the friday and I can't see myself anywhere! haha!]

Hey Bear!

I just finished scoring my first big project. I want to tell you how inspirational your music has been. This blog is a tremendous resource. You’ve given an unprecedented insight into not only the technical process, but also the thought process of scoring a film.

Anyway, here it is:
http://vimeo.com/7636206

Also, I’ve made everyone I know watch the amazing Apocalypse video.

Thank you so very much.

Wow, I just stumbled upon this press release for Titan Rain:
http://tiny.cc/vC0Kh
Sounds like a dream project… I can’t wait to hear it and hope you have a blast working on it

So… I have a compositional question for you :-)

In One Year Later or The Passage of Time… is it just a coincidence that the piano riff that starts it sounds a lot like the Six theme, and is married to a chord progression that sounds like the Baltar theme? Especially since both episodes involve an accompanying scene with Baltar and Six?

Not sure why this never occurred to me sooner, but you tend to start picking out things like this when you deconstruct pieces to write arrangements.

Well, this video is really kick-ass. It’s a real shame to have HD footage but only a crappy low-def version available. I hope to see this and other videos from that night in HD soon! :)

adg1034… “I emailed iTunes customer support. I explained the situation, and they were more than happy to fix everything for me (by re-adding the video to my account)”

Great! Once the correct stereo version is up, we can all do this! Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated.

Cory… “I’d definitely love to buy some official BSG swag though! You’re missing a golden opportunity every day you delay this :)”

We’re working on it! We’re working on it! :)

lenageek… “One more note about this vid – AMAZING job on the editing, direction and how it was put together – well done!”

Thanks! I’ll pass your kind words on to Matthew who did all the direction and editing. He really did an incredible job, and I agree with you… it brings back the magic from the concerts.

Terribly_Mauled… “Quick query though – is this from the friday night or edited from all 3?”

Its from all 3.

BlackMatteLine…

Congrats on finishing the film. Looks like you put a ton of work into it. It must feel good to be done. Best of luck with your future projects!

CaptPorridge… “Wow, I just stumbled upon this press release for Titan Rain”

Ha! You beat me to the blog entry about it! :)

MusicPaladin2007… “In One Year Later or The Passage of Time… is it just a coincidence that the piano riff that starts it sounds a lot like the Six theme, and is married to a chord progression that sounds like the Baltar theme?”

Well, the answer to your question is kind of yes AND no. It is a coincidence that the piano sounds like the Six Theme. When I first wrote “One Year Later” I wasn’t really thinking about Number Six at all. However, the chord progression is an intentional quotation of the Baltar Theme, because both of these sequences were about Gaius. Good ears, man. That was a great observation.

Cory… “It’s a real shame to have HD footage but only a crappy low-def version available.”

I agree. One step at a time, but we’ll get it out there in HiDef one day soon I think. Honestly, I was very disappointed to learn that iTunes music videos aren’t available in HiDef / 5.1 Surround.

-Bear

I am crossing my fingers, that we will get a DVD of those concerts. Ever since I saw that clip with “Apocalypse” I couldn’t help but think that it would be so amazing if a live recording will be released. I think you would make a LOT of fans around the world very happy with such a DVD but I think I will be even happier when the soundtrack for Razor and The Plan is released ;-)

Your music deserves to be seen AND heard! The House of Blues concert in July was one I will never forget!

Holy crap, I just looked at my last.fm stats and it says I’ve listened to your music for 10,390 hours. There are only 8,766 hours in an entire year.

Top tracks “Baltar Panics”, “Watchtower”, and “Kara Remembers”.

Cory… “Holy crap, I just looked at my last.fm stats and it says I’ve listened to your music for 10,390 hours. There are only 8,766 hours in an entire year.”

Holy crap indeed! That’s crazy! You deserve some sort of trophy or something. :)

-Bear

Hi Bear!! I see the Apocalypse video on iTunes, and I’m really excited about the footage quality (I was at those concerts at ComiCon)– looking forward to the DVD release, when ever that happens.

I was wondering though, you said that the audio would be available on iTunes as well and so far… still waiting. When will we be able to download the audio of Apocalypse?

I would LOVE a full concert release on Bluray in 5.1! In fact, I’d buy a Bluray player and surround sound system specifically for this. Well, this and BSG. But, I’ll have you know I’ll probably buy this first. :)

I’ve been watching the Apocalypse video pretty much every day on YouTube. I live in Canada, so unfortunately I have no access to the iTunes single/video. In fact, even when I view the US store, only the audio version appears. Weird.

Question: On the Razor/Plan album, will Apocalypse be essentially what was in the end credits of The Plan? I’d love to see an arrangement more along the lines of the live video–multiple Rayas are great, but the Raya/McCreary harmonies were MINDBLOWING! Also, the live version seems to build more and have more power. Probably because it’s live and you have the audience and all the other performers around you. And the solos are phenomenal, as they always are. :)

Hey Bear — a question about the BSG The Plan Soundtrack. There are two scenes where the music really caught my attention — well all of it did but the scene of the invasion of the 12 colonies (like at 7 minutes into the movie) and the “33″ assault scene really got my interest. Will they be on the cd?

g60racer… “I was wondering though, you said that the audio would be available on iTunes as well and so far… still waiting. When will we be able to download the audio of Apocalypse?”

It IS available, but iTunes still hasn’t frakking corrected the artist name. They listed the artist as “Matthew Gilna.” Look him up and you’ll see the audio is available for sale. I’ve literally been contacting them once a week for MONTHS trying to get them to fix this.

IamED_2… “I would LOVE a full concert release on Bluray in 5.1! In fact, I’d buy a Bluray player and surround sound system specifically for this. Well, this and BSG. But, I’ll have you know I’ll probably buy this first. :)”

At this point, I’m looking into doing a limited pressing of a full concert film. It seems like a lot of people would go for it.

“On the Razor/Plan album, will Apocalypse be essentially what was in the end credits of The Plan?”

I’m not sure yet, but I think I’ll have a couple different versions of Apocalypse on the album.

Mal_27… “the invasion of the 12 colonies (like at 7 minutes into the movie) and the “33″ assault scene really got my interest. Will they be on the cd?”

The invasion of the colonies, yes. And that’s a huge 6 or 7 minute battle cue. The “33″ assault scene probably not, because it was mostly a new variation of the original score from “33.”

-Bear

I’m glad the invasion one is on there — as for the 33 assault scene, it sounded different.. the old variation wasn’t on any of your previous soundtracks eh?

Bear,

Great to hear you’re looking into a DVD of the concert – Apocalypse is amazing and I really want to hear more. Especially since the tracks are so different. I loved the hybrid version of Gaeta’s Lament and Prelude to War with electric guitars. The only problem is they are from the CA plaza concert and don’t sound too great. =)

Still not on iTunes Canada. =/

Because one can never have too many versions of Apocolypse. And yes, the invasion of the colonies.. and whatever cue that drum break on the Razor DVD is from. I don’t know what’s on the US release, but the Euro release is a killer drum break.

And as for that limited release of the concert footage. Yes please. :-)

Off topic, but I happen to know that I have one of those fun little Stylophone pocket organs sitting under the tree. I fully plan to spend the evening browsing through blog entries, and getting interactive with the cues. I used to just hum them, but now I get to annoy everyone!

Bear, if you don’t have one of those little things, you can really piss people off by having one on you at all times, like for example, going out for a nice dinner. The conversation gets boring, whip out the Stylophone and get some composing done. Especially if you don’t want to be invited back, it’s awesome. :-)

BTW, I just want to wish everyone a Happy Festivus. It has begun with the Airing of Grievances, and I have a lot of problems with you people! ;)

Mal_27… “as for the 33 assault scene, it sounded different.. the old variation wasn’t on any of your previous soundtracks eh?”

Well, it was a little different for sure. The idea with “The Plan” was to revisit all these old cues and give them a new perspective.

-Bear

Well if it doesn’t make it in the soundtrack, maybe it could possibly put on some sort of “Music of BSG That Never Made It Out” CD? (Lol).

Bear,

Any news on the European release of the BSG music. Off course already owning all of your albums, I’m in it for the extra material and the live performance..

Bear,
Is there anywhere else we non US fans can let the brass know how much we want a concert dvd?

Remember during the writer’s strike, they had this thing where fans send in pencils to the studios, in the name of their favorite shows?

Maybe if we all sent taiko drum sticks…

I never buy from iTunes because it is always AAC and I can’t play it on my mp3 player without burning to a CD and re-ripping. (The convert to mp3 function keeps the copy protections and still won’t play.)

That being said, I bought Apocalypse.

Bravo! as usual.
