New Docs: Dark Void, T:TSCC & Eureka

Posted by Bear McCreary on November 5th, 2009

There are some new cool documentaries out there worth pointing out. First up: GameTrailers.com has a Dark Void Character Development Diary:

This is a wonderful look at the evolution of the characters in the game, told by the producers and developers themselves.  There’s an interesting comparison between typical blank-canvas videogame archetypes and actual, interesting characters.  The game’s strong narrative structure is what made it such a joy to write music for.  There’s a good story that required multiple character themes and musical development along the lines of my work on T:TSCC and BSG.

Speaking of the Dark Void score, this documentary is by far the best sneak peak yet at a bunch of my cues written for the game.  Previous trailers (as well as the cue excerpts released last spring) have featured exclusively gameplay music.  This documentary is your first example of what the cinematics and character themes sound like.

(UPDATED: Thanks to cory for pointing out in the comments that the official website has a bunch of my score playing on the main page!  Check it out: http://www.darkvoidgame.com/)

The next two are old news, and I’m kicking myself for not checking them out earlier.  I finally cracked open the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 2 and Eureka Season 3.0 DVDs that came out last summer.  Each one includes a documentary about my score.

“Setting the Tempo” covers my work on Terminator and includes interviews with the executive producers and myself.

It also provides an in-depth look at the recording of the song “Samson and Delilah” with Shirley Manson, of Garbage fame.  It was a blast for me to look back on those recording sessions with Shirley, because they were so much fun.

And seeing all those clips from the series cut to my score made me miss it even more.  Sarah was an extraordinary series that deserved to go on.  I really hope that one day this story continues in one form or another, because I’d love to go back and play with these themes again.

On the Eureka DVD, there’s a documentary called “Creating a Musical Personality” which features an interview with me and series creator Jaime Paglia at my studio.  I like this film because it doesn’t really follow a scripted structure, but basically ebbs and flows with the conversation between us.

We cover our favorite musical moments from the first two seasons and discuss the series’ unique instrumentation and stylistic approach.  I even point out a hidden little easter egg in the score where I quoted the music of BSG.

However, the most interesting part of this doc comes towards the end.  Jaime asked me if there’s anything I’ve wanted to do with the series that I hadn’t had a chance to yet.  This began a conversation about an idea that is now actively in development for Season 4.  It may not happen still, but if it ever does, you can actually witness the exact moment when Jaime and I got the idea to do it!

By the way, if you haven’t checked out my Eureka soundtrack CD, it’s really worth listening to.  Many of these cues are among the best I’ve ever produced.  I personally think that “Sheriff Carter’s Theme” and “Mask of Fargo” are worth the price alone!

Lastly, I wanted to mention that a new book is coming out that features interviews with many of todays top composers, including yours truly.

It’s pretty amazing to be listed with all these industry giants.  I haven’t checked out “Keeping Score” yet, but I’m eager to read what everyone else had to say.

Regrettably, that’s all the news fit to print.  My super-secret-totally-awesome announcement that should have been more than a week ago… is still ready to happen any minute.  But this experience teaches me not to tease you guys with information when the outcome isn’t directly in my hands.  Sorry!  But you’ll all be the first to know, I promise!  Check back soon.

So Say We All!

Shiny :D. I really hope that these docs are on the region 2 releases for TSCC and Eureka (when that one finally surfaces).

I’m totally gonna have to re-watch Eureka and look out for the BSG music now. I’m not gonna stop until I find it. I really wanna know where it is now. I guess that’s decided what I’m gonna spend the next week or so doing.

Can’t wait for Eureka season 4, and if you feel compelled to put out another soundtrack for it, I wouldn’t object (*hint hint*). The Mask of Fargo is definitely one of my favourite tracks from the season 2 soundtrack. I always find myself thinking “How the frak isn’t that trumpet player dead?”

I’m trying to convince my flatmates to buy Dark Void when it comes out. I’m not much with video games myself, but I want them to buy it so’s they can play and I can listen to the music.

In case anyone missed it, http://www.darkvoidgame.com has previews of the soundtrack! Can’t wait for the full thing, it sounds really amazing.

Thanks Cory! Good catch. I updated the post and included this.

I’ll give you a hint: Bad to the Drone. :)

*makes note to rewatch*

I bet it’s when Zoe makes the “Cylon shuttle” comment, though, right?

Damn, those excerpts on the Dark Void site are frakkin’ intense!

YOUR SOUNDTRACKS ARE ON ITUNES!!!!!!!!!!

Ha! Called it!

Heee! Found it :D I really wanna hear a full-length version of that. The BSG quote is definitely not where I expected it to be, but it works brilliantly, and I’m never gonna be able to look at that scene quite the same way again. I wish I could say more, but I don’t wanna spoil it for anyone else who may be looking for it.

And after visiting the Dark Void website, I’m contemplating buying an X-Box 360 just so that I can play it myself.

Yay iTunes! Although… maybe they’re still working on it… only season 2-4 and Caprica are up there. Hoping 1 will be up there too.

Also hoping the Razor/Plan soundtrack will be up there when the time comes too!

Or PS3. Or PC. :)

@Bear…

I’ve decided that I’m gonna go for the PS3, that way I have an excuse to buy BSG on Blu-Ray and sell my DVD version. Plus I can get the whole series in one box (it really bugs me not having stuff in matching boxes.)

I’ll admit to having had no luck catching the Galactica reference on the rewatch. I was waiting to hear a snippet of Martial Law when Carter was trying to get everyone off the streets, but I guess it was not to be.

Still, I can try again tomorrow.

Oh man, visiting the Dark Void site is really making me excited for this game. I never, ever, EVER thought I would buy a video game based off the music, but you’ve proven me wrong.

Not to mention the soundtrack! Its cheering me up just thinking about it!

January is going to be a rockin’ month!

Duckey… “January is going to be a rockin’ month!”

You’re telling me! “Dark Void” ships and “Caprica” and “Human Target” both premiere within the span of a week. And all three projects are big, orchestral, thematic scores. It’s going to be crazy!

jonathondezlalour… “I’ve decided that I’m gonna go for the PS3″

That’s a good decision. I can’t say why yet. But its a good decision. :)

First episode. Near the part where Zoe calls the thing a “cylon.” :)

Seriously? ‘Cause I thought it was when Eva Thorne walked in. That music sounds a helluva lot like Prelude to War to me. In fact I actually played P2W along with it just to make sure.

I’ve listened to that chunk again and I’m not hearing anything specifically BSG-ish in there unless it’s somewhere in the percussion…

You guys, I just finished working on a Dark-Void-related project that’s going to blow your minds! It comes out next month. I can’t wait to do a blog entry about it!!!

It’s not there exactly, its in the scene where she’s back in the pantry / fridge / kitchen area and the drone opens a door.

Boy am I suddenly even more appreciative of my PS3. Something exclusive for the PS3? A special Blu-Ray release of some kind, perhaps?

Godsdamn, something else to speculate about. :)

Is it a trailer for the game with an original score? A cross-promotional type thing, like a motion comic or short, maybe? A special release of the score, wrapped in bacon, with a jetpack included?

Hmmmm, bacon. ;)

Jonny Boy …

Those are all good guesses as to why you should be happy to have a PS3. But, none of them were it. Close though. The Dark Void album wrapped in bacon is an awesome idea, by the way. :)

I’ve been listening to the score samples that you put up back in April. I really cannot wait to get my hands on this game. I’ve ordered my PS3 now, and I’m gonna be pre-ordering Dark Void in the next few weeks. Can’t wait for the soundtrack (We are still getting one, right?) album, I think my neighbours are getting sick of hearing BSG/Caprica/TSCC/Eureka/Rest Stop/Wrong Turn so this’ll make a change for ‘em.

After listening to the “proper” theme a few times, I keep hearing it in my head as a BSG-fied mash-up with Prelude to War done with electric guitars and duduks and stuff like the live version.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a game. And I’m really really hoping that the Dark Void related project is the soundtrack release. Just from the clips I know this one’s gonna be epic like the Daybreak score.

@Johnny Boy

If you read the end of the Dark Void post from april, there’s another “super-secret video game project”, so now I’m sorta leaning towards a PS3-only super-secret video game project.

I forgot to add. Is it just me or does the ship on the left look like the arse end of an original series cylon raider?

@Bear

Yeah, everything is better with bacon on it. Or the words “Music by Bear McCreary”.:)

Hmmm…. interesting.

By the way, gang… Capcom is about to announce a very cool music-related Dark Void promotional campaign. I’ll hopefully blog about it in the next few days, but I’m very excited about it.

I was walking home from uni about half an hour ago and stopped off at HMV. They had one copy of TSCC season 2 so I grabbed it. The first thing I watched was Setting the Tempo.

I was very impressed with it. It makes a nice change to see featurettes on TV show DVDs that are actually put together properly. (the ones on some series just suck – like the Stargate ones). It was really cool seeing how you made some of the sounds you used and hearing Shirley Manson’s unedited vocal track for Samson and Delilah.

“Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B Entertainment, under its Creative Partnership with Reliance BIG Entertainment, and Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, have come to terms on the film rights relating to Dark Void, a new property from Capcom. The theatrical version of the Dark Void game is being developed as a sci-fi action franchise and potential starring vehicle for Pitt.”

Years away from production, no doubt, much less release, but here’s hoping the people involved make the right choice when deciding on a composer.

Hey Bear,

Heard about the movie project based on the game?

Came upon this article today…

Would be really cool if you ported over your skills to the movie version as well…

Cheers.

adg1034…

Yeah! I heard about this a few weeks ago and couldn’t say anything. This is very exciting!

Here’s the Seattle Times article about it.

-Bear

Exciting, indeed. Keep us in the loop when you can.

Wow, that’s awesome! I hope this gets the fast track, and that Brad Pitt likes your music. (How could he not?)
