Johnny “Vatos” Tribute to Halloween 2009

October is a busy month of concerts for me.  In addition to the Stu Phillips tribute with the Golden State Pops, I’m returning to the stage with the Boingo boys for our fourth and final Johnny “Vatos” Tribute to Halloween and Oingo Boingo!

If you missed our shows in 2005, 2006 or 2007, then this is your last chance to see these songs performed live by this band.  Anyone who caught one of our previous shows knows how completely bad-ass insane this show promises to be.  We slammed through Boingo hits like “Dead Man’s Party,” “Only a Lad,” “Out of Control” and “On the Outside” for the casual fan, and played the rarer oddities such as “Forbidden Zone,” “I’m Afraid,” “Vultures,” “Take Your Medicine” and “Nature Zone” for the hardcore out there!

blog034b.jpg

This year, we’re expanding the set list even more.  ”Just Another Day,” “No Spill Blood” and “Nothing to Fear” are just a few of the new songs I’m arranging for the band.  And there are a few surprise additions as well.  (And while I’m faithful to their original versions, many of these tunes go through some McCreary-ization for an extra kick in the pants.)

The band line-up includes a substantial percentage of the BSG Orchestra.  Returning Boingo alums include Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez, Steve Bartek, John Avila, Sam Phipps and Doug Lacy.  Lead vocals and front-man insanity are provided by Brendan McCreary.  I’m conducting, playing keyboards and singing background vocals.  Also on stage are vocalists Raya Yarbrough, Felice Hernandez and guitarist Carlos De La Paz, as well as a horn section.

So when is that bullit train being built from Norcal to Socal?

Going to try to make two weekends in a row woo hoo!

Frak, can’t make it. Early morning on Friday. But I’ll be in San Pedro on the 24th.

Love the “horned section.”

“Just Another Day” is, IMHO the best Oingo track ever made. Especially the version on Boingo Alive. I play this track each and every year on my birthday, which may seem odd, but it works for me.

It would sure be cool to see these songs peromed live again (last time for me was in 1988), but alas it is a bit far-ish.

Any chance of a simucast to a “theatre near us?” Or, a dvd of both concerts?

SueN… “Going to try to make two weekends in a row woo hoo!”

Awesome!

Brian… ““Just Another Day” is, IMHO the best Oingo track ever made. Especially the version on Boingo Alive.”

The Boingo Alive version definitely kicks ass. I just did my arrangement of it yesterday and pulled elements from both versions together.

Most High Empress… “Any chance of a simucast to a “theatre near us?” Or, a dvd of both concerts?”

Nope. None whatsoever. Maybe something will sneak online, but a DVD is way too complicated legally for stuff like this.

-Bear

Awww if the DVD is too complicated that must mean a live recording will be out too. Sadface. :( I know someone who’s a huge Oingo Boingo fan and would love one.

Wow, guys… I just got some FRAKKIN’ awesome news pertaining to BSG soundtracks. I’ll do a blog entry as soon as I know all the facts. But, damn… I’m stoked about this! :)

-Bear

Bear…can’t say enough how much I appreciate your scores and passion for BSG, can’t wait to watch Human Target andattend the GS performance. Have to tell you, I became a fan of the show because of your music after watching several episodes on a cross-country Virgin America flight. Missed SD, but thrilled to do LA. My two young daughters are coming with as they have both joined their school orchestras and they have heard the 4.5 score about 300 times in my car.

Stoked is good. We await details.

I frakkin LOVE frakking AWESOME news. Frak yea.

Gonna miss the show tho. Going to NYC.

Cross your fingers for me I can get tickets to see the Yankees at home for Game 2 of the World Series! Assuming they beat the Angels….

Hmmmm…what could it be….?

Why do you do this to us?

Wow, guys… I just got some FRAKKIN’ awesome news pertaining to BSG soundtracks. I’ll do a blog entry as soon as I know all the facts. But, damn… I’m stoked about this! :)

-Bear

TEASER!

This looks like a blast! Wonder if I can make it up there…

And BSG soundtrack news? Woo hoo, can’t wait to hear what it is! :)

Godsdamn, that sounds exciting! BSG soundtrack news can ONLY mean good news :)

Did someone say BSG music news?? :-)

Everytime you think you’re out, we keep pulling you back in!

Is it perhaps that you have A Plan? ;)

“Wow, guys… I just got some FRAKKIN’ awesome news pertaining to BSG soundtracks. I’ll do a blog entry as soon as I know all the facts. But, damn… I’m stoked about this! :)

-Bear”

Box set? Grammy nom? Top selling TV soundtrack ever? La-La Land wants to do multiple episode discs a la farscape? Whatever it is, we’ll buy it–’cause you are the most talented Bear in the whole world (my apologies to Jane Espensen…)

Well, I’m going to this event. Lots of Boingo Goodness !!!

I’m awaiting the news on the BSG Soundtracks Front. I suspect we’ll be getting the Razor/The Plan soundtrack announced, and/or possibly a Rarities Archive CD set announcement.

If Bear’s stoked, so am I.

If it’s a box set I’ll kill you now that you’ve already signed my season 4 soundtrack.

but congrats regardless!

Wow, no one’s guessed it yet. :) Sorry to be such a tease. I’ll announce it as soon as I can! :)

-Bear

Some other possibilities:

Isolated Score for The Plan on DVD/Blu-Ray !!!!
More Concerts (Yay !!!!)
DVD documenting the score and creative process bundled with The Plan/Razor Soundtrack !!!
Razor and The Plan expanded to full CDs rather than a shared soundtrack !!!
Combo of The Razor and The Plan into a 2 CD set, ala Season 4 !!!!

I for one am still keeping my hopes up for a complete set on DVD-Audio ;)

Damn, this must be good. He’s frakkin with us. Maybe La La Land is releasing the soundtracks onto iTunes.

Box set with 5.1 surround mixes?

That would rule.

Concert DVD

Lots of sheet music in various keys, all for our convenience?

The full release of the entire score for the whole frakkin’ thing?

An All Along The Watchtower music video?

A WORLD TOUR!

All expenses paid meetup for all the regular blog posters, and our own private concert?

A release of that wallpaper desktop background you’re using in the documentary?

Bear, have you thought at all about creating original BSG-inspired albums? Same type of music but never meant for an episode? :)

Guitar Hero BSG?! Hehe. We get to be any member of the BSG Orchestra during live performances of any song from the 4 seasons and The Plan. That would be fun ;)

number7lives…Guitar Hero BSG?! Hehe. We get to be any member of the BSG Orchestra during live performances of any song from the 4 seasons and The Plan. That would be fun ;)

Oh hell yes!!

So maybe a box set of the soundtracks with the DVD of the concerts?

Concert tour (oh please?)

I am with plainsong…All expenses paid meetup for all the regular blog posters, and our own private concert?

:-)

You guys gotta check this out… randolf sent this cover of “Reptiles and Samurai” to me.

http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=125178#

He sequenced it using the MIDI file of the song that I sequenced nearly a decade ago that’s been floating around on various fan sites for years (there’s also a “Forbidden Zone” one out there too).

The funny thing is, he sent me this from London literally while I was rehearsing with the Boingo boys for this show. So, I got home from rehearsal and had this song in my inbox. What a trip to hear that MIDI file again. When I first sequenced it, I was playing it in with my ancient Yamaha PSR-510 and here it is again, with bigger and better sounds. Wow, what a flashback.

Speaking of Boingo rehearsals, they’re sounding awesome. I’ve added a ton of songs to the set that we’ve never performed before. It’s gonna be an awesome show!

-Bear

Hah, that’s pretty cool.

Ok, here are my theories, most likely first:
Battlestar Galactica Orchestra CD and DVD
CD(s) of unreleased material greenlit in addition to the Razor/The Plan disc
BSG Orchestra Tour!
Bear gives up and “looses” a hard drive containing every last bit of music ever composed for the series in front of my house. I find it and edit it into 12 more soundtrack CD’s.
Bear actually clones himself, giving him time to edit 12 more soundtracks.
12 more soundtracks are already completed, and bear is going to have a fleet of giant hot air balloons shaped like his head drop soundtracks (With parachutes) over the entire world.
I think that about does it for the realistic options….I have other ideas, but they are a bit farfetched!

This really isn’t the right place to put this, but then I’m not sure what is. I was watching a series called “There Will be Brawl”, a little drama(thats hilariously done) about various nintendo characters. During the first episode, What do I hear? “Worthy of Survival” from the season 2 soundtrack! Whoever chose the music for the series has a great ear! It’s somewhere around six minutes in.

Hey Bear, just have to post this.

There is a highly anticipated HBO pilot/series in the works called Game of Thrones.
It’s the screen adaption of the epic fantasy series “A song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin.

Because of the quality and complexity the books are widely considered to be even on par with the Lord of the Rings books although a complete other approach was taken by the author.
They are darker, more realistic and mainly based on mediaval times with few fantasy bits in it (although that changes as the books progress).

Long story short, it would be absolutely amazing if you would try to get the gig of scoring that one.

There is huge potential for incredible success.
HBO is pooring lot’s of money in it. Lead actor is Sean Bean (!) and “Sarah Connor Chronicles” Lena Headey also has a big part. Shooting is on the way in Ireland,Scotland and Marocco!!!
(amazing for a TV show)

For a composer this show if picked (which is almost sure considering HBO’s efforts) would mean lots of opportunities from epic thematic approach through subtle medieval and/or choral music.

You would be my perfect choice for that and your name also appears on a forum i recently discovered by “A song of ice and fire” fans talking about the music for the pilot.

Best wishes

“Big news coming tomorrow…!”

I’m dying here. Can’t wait! I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to sleep!

Cory… “Bear, have you thought at all about creating original BSG-inspired albums? Same type of music but never meant for an episode? :)”

You know, a thought like that once crossed my mind, but it’s super nerdy… almost like musical fan fiction. But, I thought about what it would be like to write music for a non-existent “Battlestar Galactica Season 5.” Wouldn’t that be cool? Well, dorky but cool. It would just be a concept album with track titles that suggest where the story would keep going.

And while BSG Season 5 would be totally superfluous, I really thought about doing something similar for T:TSCC Season 3, which really should have existed. I’ve still got places I could take that theme.

I know, I’m a nerd.

-Bear

Duckey… “Bear actually clones himself, giving him time to edit 12 more soundtracks.”

If I cloned myself, I’d not only edit 12 more soundtracks, but I’d go on the road as a one-man-orchestra, or a vaudeville act. It would rule.

“I was watching a series called “There Will be Brawl”, a little drama(thats hilariously done) about various nintendo characters. During the first episode, What do I hear? “Worthy of Survival” from the season 2 soundtrack!”

Whoa! never heard of that. What network is it on?

Fedragal… “There is a highly anticipated HBO pilot/series in the works called Game of Thrones… Long story short, it would be absolutely amazing if you would try to get the gig of scoring that one.”

Yeah, I’m aware of that series. It would be fun to score, wouldn’t it? Well, some vocal fans would always make any attempt easier.

I know! I know! It’s like Christmas Eve and you can’t sleep!!!!! Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow….

Ok, your score for The Plan knocked me off my frakking feet. Awesome job. Looking real forward to a blog post if you have the time.

And speaking of Game of Thrones, I’ve noticed a few blogs and message board topics on the score and I’ve seen a lot of fan interest from fans hoping for Bear McCreary. With all the hype the show is getting already it would be an awesome show for you to score. From your comment above it sounds like you’d be interested so I’ll definitely be voicing my vote for you as the composer wherever I can.

Boingo rehearsals have been awesome! I’m about to hit the road for soundcheck down in Anaheim. See you guys there!!!

Here’s the photos I took of the grand event: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kuhnster/sets/72157622694749142

The show was perfect!

9FingeredElf…

Awesome pictures! Thanks for sharing them.

-Bear

Anyone else who saw the show… what did you think? :) How did it sound out in the house?

I loved it, absolutely did.

This was quite a polished show, and it was really great !!!

The vocals were *slightly* too quiet in the mix at times, but not by much.

Brendan really rocked, as did everyone, and it was a lot of fun.

The trouble is, many Boingo fans are Gen Xers, so Thursday Night was probably a little awkward for some, but it looked like a good turnout.

$10 parking sucked, but it was fun.

The last time I was at the Grove was for Pat Benetar with my Wife (who also joined me).

We had the good fortune of standing directly behind Brian Grazier and his significant other, and he was a minefield of fun backstage BSG info.

Keeping my ears/eyes open for the Razor/The Plan soundtrack, BTW.

Hm i just thought about something. If you do Game of Thrones you would have done almost every music genre (which has a right to be on a tv show and would be challenging for a composer) i can think of right now :)

I mean as far you did classic, orchestral, chamber, rock, irish, jazz, a bit techno for disco scenes although i could be wrong, eastern, folk, blues, vocal, choir, horror/dark music (from time to time), comical mickey mouse type music,

Considering real challenging and noteworthy musical genres (although it depends on personal taste) you are missing exactly what Game of Thrones would offer.

Medieval Music, Renaissance Music and Arabic
type music (although i think you did that to a small extent on Battlestar)

OneBuckFilms…

I didn’t see you there after the show. Glad you were there! Oh, and I’m pretty sure you mean Kevin Grazier, not Brian. He’s the science advisor for BSG… great guy.

Fedragal…

“Medieval Music, Renaissance Music and Arabic
type music (although i think you did that to a small extent on Battlestar)”

Well, I certainly did tons of Arabic inspired music on BSG, Medieval and Renaissance would be fun I guess, although harmonically that music is pretty limited. But, no one from Game of Thrones is banging down my door at the moment, so don’t anyone get their hopes up here. :)

Bear,

Me and my wife didn’t come back stage or anything afterwards since we had work the following day.

Yes it WAS Kevin. OOps :)

Hey Bear, thanks for an AWESOME show Thursday night! You rocked so hard! I was right underneath you, though I couldn’t see you very well because the keyboards blocked my view, but I was the one in calaca facepaint and a headscarf, jumping up and down and doing the Robot and just generally freaking out like crazy because it was so freakin AWESOME!! YEAH!!!! Thanks a million for being part of these fantastic concerts!

with love,
Rebecca

PS: Is “Bear” your real name? Were your parents hippies like my neighbors up here in Humboldt?

I went to the concert. It was badass. Granted, I have no familiarity with Oingo Boingo, so some of it (nay, a lot of it) was lost on me with the impact or whatnot. But yeah. Ummm… It was badass, my friend. I loved it and had a great time. My friend went (also not a Boingo-knower, but still more than me) but she loved it too. And can you tell your brother I love him because he’s really great? Cuz uhhhh… He is. It was great to see “the crew” doing a rock concert.

And I also went and did download a mess of Boingo music. So… You win? =p

I took some video of the concert. I was across the stage from you but managed to get some footage of you.

Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=A2ED8CD1A09BF694

Rebecca… “PS: Is “Bear” your real name? Were your parents hippies like my neighbors up here in Humboldt?”

Thanks for writing in. I probably saw you up there in the front at one point or another. Yes, my parents probably were hippies. :)

GungaDin…

Awesome! Glad you were there. Sounds like you’re becoming a Boingo convert.

9FingeredElf…

Thanks for the video links, man! I’m so glad you were able to sneak this video. The security was really tight (and were being a bunch of @$$holes that night I might add). I was really hoping that a few of you out there would be resourceful enough to sneak some video footage. Much appreciated!

-Bear

My husband’s middle name is Bear… in Swedish. But he’s a Swedish-speaking Finn so if you say “Björn” people will either look for a bear, or a guy named Björn. It’s not a name with the symbolism of the bear, while the actual animal is called something else – nope, it’s a bear.

And his first name is the last name of a certain member of the final five, who is always called by his last name, and it’s always pronounced wrong on the show. Hint: He became a hybrid. Anders is pronounced with an Ah sound, not a short vowel sound.

Yeah, I’m bragging. It was a show he was totally destined by the gods to watch. He ignored the name similarities until the big final five reveal and then was like “WHhhhaat??”

hey bear nice seeing you and your soon to be wife. great show. insted of loading ALL the videos heres my channel w/ like 7 or 9 videos. sounded great! good job!

Hi Bear,
I was able to attend the concert on the 27th with Kevin and it was amazing!!! I am so glad I had the opportunity to attend!

OneBuckFilms, it was a pleasure to meet you and your wife!!!!

Oh wow… I came back here out of curiosity about the Game of Thrones talk and I fine talk of “There Will Be Brawl”?!? So weird!

Bear, I’ve worked extensively in the production of certain episodes of There Will Be Brawl as well as been used as minor cast roles. The Writer, Director/Creator, production assistants, and just about all the actors are -huge- Battlestar Galatica fans. That was totally an Easter Egg us BSG fans (nerds) put in the series.

I want to assure you though, There Will Be Brawl is not a TV series. It is a non-profit webseries made by fans for fans. There is no copy write infringement of your amazing work. If you are interested in the series, you can see it here:
http://www.therewillbebrawl.com

Nessa… wow, this looks awesome! What a crazy project. I will try to watch it sometime when I have a free moment. Thanks for the link…

-Bear

[...] composer for Battlestar Galactica, was a popular fan choice to score Game of Thrones. A Thrones fan relayed this interest to McCreary on his blog and this is what McCreary had to say: Yeah, I’m aware of that series. It would be fun to score, [...]

That’s crazy Internet. Two months after my post and your answer, the stuff is posted on the biggest Game of Thrones fan website to date :)

But i’m glad it was, i bet the folks at HBO check the fansite from time to time and have probably read the posting.
I also noticed the fans on the website are quite positive in the comments about you as the possible composer.

Should be easier now if you try to get the gig as you could mention that you are already favoured by quite some fans
Just promise me that you at least try, pls

Best wishes

(By the way your recent postings are better then ever with all the preview tracks regarding human target, dark void and co. I’m so looking forward to the caprica music. I hope to hear the main theme played lush and warm someday like you did with the finalfive theme in Revelations)
