    Human Target Screens Today

Posted by Bear McCreary on July 25th, 2009

The cat’s out of the bag:  I am scoring FOX’s comic book action series HUMAN TARGET.  I’ve already completed music for the pilot, with a full orchestra recorded at the Warner Bros. Scoring Stage.  The score is epic, bombastic and, above all, tons of fun (I’ll put up audio clips in the coming weeks).  I think that any soundtrack, BSG or general Bear fans will fall in love with it!  :)

It screens today at Comic Con from 4:45 to 5:55 in Room 6A.

I will be at the convention this afternoon, signing BSG Season 4 CDs, at the Screen Archives Booth.  Its #429, at the North end of the floor.  About the size of an 8th of a booth, its easy to miss.  But, I’m guessing the crowd won’t be.

Last night’s concert experience was nearly a religious one for me.  The energy coming from the crowd was incredible.  David Eick, Edward James Olmos, Michael Hogan, Grace Park, James Callis, Richard Hatch, Nicki Clyne, Michael Trucco, Michelle Forbes and director Michael Nankin all gathered on stage to honor late producer Harvey Frand who passed away Thursday.  We dedicated the concert to his memory and brought the frakkin’ house down.

As promised, I will write up something in more detail next week.  See you at Comic Con and at the FINAL CONCERT, tonight at the House of Blues.

    So Say We All!

Oh, and Peter… you were the only person who guessed that my new project was Human Target! :) Sehr gute!

    -Bear

Human Target was my next guess after V >.>

GungaDin… Cool! Hey, you’re stopping by the signing today right?

    -Bear

Man, you’ve got plenty of blogging on your plate for the immediate future! An entry on the concerts… an entry for the S4 Album… Possibly one for Human Target…

Really wish I could have made it to this series of concerts but here’s hoping you can make it to DragonCon or somewhere else in the southeastern US sometime soon!

Sad news to hear Harvey Frand passed away too :-( Hopefully there will be an “In Memory Of” tag on The Plan.

Speaking of which, considering you’re performing music from it, have you finished the score for The Plan? Is it orchestral or just ethnic ensemble? I’m itching for details on it! The only thing I know from Raya’s twitter is that she’s in it and that she’s singing a “familiar tune”.

lol sorry I am on a posting binge here. But just noticed something else that works very well to your favor:

Apparently the show has American Idol as a lead-in… that should help it some, especially if it’s a kick-ass show!

Nice, the Idol Bump. Did wonders for Fringe!

Hopefully Human Target does as well, though I can’t say I’m completely sold on the plot.

Oh sweet! I was going to check this out anyway because I liked the actor from Fringe but you doing the score sweetens the mix! Most excellent!

Sorry to hear about Harvey, best wishes to you all in the BSG family.

Great news! Can’t wait to see this show and experience your awesome score.

So sad to hear about Harvey Frand :( I didn’t know him but I saw him in the videoblogs, and I heard many people call him the unsung hero of the production crew. Oh my, when I prepared a news item for my website a few minutes ago, Winamp played “So Much Life”, out of all songs, so I was choking up even more than usual. Anyway, honoring Harvey at your concert was a wonderful idea, and I hope we’ll get to see some of the cast’s tributes on the DVD.

Human Target: Congrats! I look very much forward to discovering the layer that you’re gonna add to this show :)

P.S.: Found some cool pics from the Friday concert, including shots of the surprise guests on stage

Bear- Yes, Bear. I did. =p

So, I saw the Human Target screening. The music is like a mix between the Caprica and TSCC scores. I enjoyed it.

The show, unfortunately and despite being pretty unique, feels formulaic. You follow some super-smooth antiheros. They know just what to say, always have a plan, and always know just what to do to keep the plan on track (hahah). Some shows have this to a degree, but usually show flaws to make sure you know it’s an overconfidence or even an act. Human Target, however, put it on hyperdrive and presented a completely flawless character.

There is a lot of action, all of it really good.

The show has a light quirkiness to it. Similar to Pushing Daisies.

The acting was superb. Donnelly Rhodes (aka Doc Cottle) has a small part. Tricia Helfer guest starred as “the client” in need of help (and we were told she insisted on performing all her own stunts). Danny Glover had a cameo at the end.

Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley) didn’t really have an introduction, just sort of imposing himself onto the story. He is in desperate need of some depth of character — basically all we saw him do was sit at a computer and every now and then it would cut to him for 10 seconds to reveal some new information he hacked. I think this is probably due to it being a pilot and them needing to pack in as much of the primary idea as possible, and am not really worried about it for the future of the show.

They billed it as being a procedural with a splash of serial, which is pretty much expected for a mainstream channel like Fox.

Bear — my brother and I were first in line at the signing!

We had listened to nearly the whole album by the time we got home to LA and I must say I am impressed.

“Roslin Escapes” is bound to be my favorite action track across all the CDs — the Japanese feel is frakkin’ awesome and immediately brought back memories of those two incredibly powerful episodes, “The Oath” and “Blood on the Scales”.

I nearly shed a tear listening to this album, thinking that we wouldn’t be getting any more quite like it. I know you’ve got The Plan in the mix, but movies just aren’t the same as having a full season to hash out a good score. You wouldn’t consider continuing on with “Battlestar Music Season 5″, would you? :D

HAH! You bastard! I KNEW it!

    Congratulations! :-)

At this point I’m watching this just to hear your score.

Fox is loving Mark Valley right now huh? I’m hoping there’s more John Scott to come on Fringe?

Well, I got my girlfriend to watch BSG and Caprica, so now I guess I’ll have to tell her to watch Human Target, too. It’s the least she can do since I am shackled to the couch for episodes of “Real Housewives”. God just typing it burns.

    Congratulations, Bear. Stay busy bro.

Bear, I was second in line behind Cory, having bought Season 4 at the Thursday show but not gotten it signed. Please see if you can get set lists up for the SD shows at some point to tide us all over until the awesome DVD release (right???)

    Derek

Awesome! I was so tired that I totally didn’t even connect things. but when the pilot was over, I thought it was very good! Had great action, and music.. but i didn’t know why i liked it so much. Then, the fiance said “Look! Bear!” to which i shook my head, ashamed at my ignorance.. “ahh.. secret project! sneaky little..”

:) My uncle is Peter Johnson, one of the producers. So i kinda was there just to see what he was up to. But i was very impressed with what i saw and heard. Hopefully the show can live up to having such an awesome score! Congrats!

Loved the concert, Bear! I had a great time Saturday and was relieved there were still some fun guests to bring out for night 3. Quick question though. I’ve been listening to the Season 4 soundtrack nonstop and was wondering if there are some drum hits in the first 20 seconds or so of “The Signal.” On my dumpy speakers it kind of sounded like a clicking distortion which had me unnerved, but when I finally got it onto a friends good speakers they sound a bit more like intentional percussion hits. Just curious as I want to make sure my CD is firing on all cylinders. It really is a phenomenal track. Thanks again for another amazing concert this year!

Thanks for all those lovely reviews! You guys were very lucky. It’s a rare gift to experience and *live* one’s BSG love so forcefully and unapologetically, with so many senses, and with so many likeminded people :)

By the way, here are more pictures documenting the magic of those nights

    Pedda…

Thanks for the links again! Some great pictures in there.

Musicpaladin2007… “Man, you’ve got plenty of blogging on your plate for the immediate future! An entry on the concerts… an entry for the S4 Album… Possibly one for Human Target…”

You’re telling me. I don’t know how / when I’m going to do it all!

“Speaking of which, considering you’re performing music from it, have you finished the score for The Plan? Is it orchestral or just ethnic ensemble? I’m itching for details on it! The only thing I know from Raya’s twitter is that she’s in it and that she’s singing a “familiar tune”.”

It’s entirely ethnic. We performed some of it already at the Comic Con concerts and it seemed to pretty much destroy the audience, if their reaction was any indicator. :)

    GungaDin…

Nice to finally meet you at the signing!

Cory… “The show, unfortunately and despite being pretty unique, feels formulaic. ”

Give it a chance. Remember, this series isn’t trying to re-invent the wheel here. If anything, the producer wants to deliver something that feels closer to Indiana Jones / James Bond / Lethal Weapon / Die Hard than any of the contemporary action series like Prison Break or 24.

It’s a daring idea, because the show doesn’t hide behind punchy editing tricks, or slick, techno-inspired soundtrack cliches. He lets me shamelessly bust out the Goldsmith, Horner, Herrmann, Bernstein, Williams, Silvestri and Poledouris influences that made me want to go into scoring in the first place.

Sure, it’s not a ground-breaking series. But, I think it’s going to be more fun than just about anything else on television. My virtually un-biased opinion, anyway.

After the heavy, heavy, heavy drama of BG, T:TSCC and Caprica, this show feels like a dive into a cool swimming pool for me. :)

kaz… “At this point I’m watching this just to hear your score.”

    You won’t be disappointed. :)

    -Bear

foxmorty… “I’ve been listening to the Season 4 soundtrack nonstop and was wondering if there are some drum hits in the first 20 seconds or so of “The Signal.” On my dumpy speakers it kind of sounded like a clicking distortion which had me unnerved, but when I finally got it onto a friends good speakers they sound a bit more like intentional percussion hits.”

That sounds like distortion coming from your speakers and / or sound system, or your particular disc is frakked up. The first percussion hit in “The Signal” is at 0:36, and it’s fairly obvious that it’s acoustic drums. It would be hard to mistake that for clicking distortion. Sorry, man. :(

    -Bear

    Bear,
wanted to ask you a quick question if you don’t mind. One of my other favorite modern tv/film composers these days is Brian Tyler, but one thing that has always bothered me about him, is he tends to have one or two amazing scores (Children of Dune, Bubba Ho-Tep), followed by a number of scores that are “meh”…

in comparison, while you have certainly less projects then he has had, your’s seem to be of a higher quality, there hasn’t been a cd of yours that I’ve bought where I’ve been dissapointed. That being said, do you often get a lot of job offers that you turn down, and pick the jobs you specifically want, or are you that good of a composer that you can find inspiration in whatever subject matter that comes your way?

I can’t imagine how I would be able to be inspired to compose for Dragon Ball Z or a Fast and the Furious Movie, and perhaps that’s why I find a lot of his scores to be “cookie cutter”, even though occasionally he hits a Grand Slam (Children of Dune will hold a perminant location in my CD player along with the BSG soundtracks).

    BEAR!

BSG Season 4 Soundtrack is #10 overall on amazon.com! Number #1 TV & Movie Soundtrack, too!

    Congratulations…. talk about an honor!!!

    P. S. Who cares about the Emmy’s when this clearly indicates that your music is WAY more popular than anything else being produced on TV. No TV soundtrack has ever sold this year.

*Sorry, No TV soundtrack has ever sold this well.

Thanks so much Bear. The guys at La La Land rock so I’m sure it’ll get straightened out. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t crazy. The rhythms of the clicks seemed a little too inventive even for you! As for “Human Target” I can’t wait. My TV schedule is getting mighty slim these days and after the cancellation of “Boston Legal” and “Pushing Daisies” I’m glad to see you, Mark and Chi all working again. And does imdb prove accurate? Is Chi’s character really named Winston? A name near and dear to me for sure.

razgriz1138… “do you often get a lot of job offers that you turn down, and pick the jobs you specifically want, or are you that good of a composer that you can find inspiration in whatever subject matter that comes your way?”

While I can’t comment on Brian Tyler, since I’m not familiar with his work, I can say that as a composer, one is lucky to find something that inspires and allows you to create powerful music.

I tend to only take on projects that excite me, ones that I can already see new and interesting musical possibilities in. However, sometimes those projects are predictable horror genre films such as “Rest Stop 2.” That film was definitely by-the-numbers, and wasn’t trying to be anything but a solid teen-horror-film genre entry. Nevertheless, the score I wrote is among the most bizarre, inventive and fun musical projects of my career. So I like to ALWAYS have fun with whatever I take on.

foxmorty… “Is Chi’s character really named Winston? A name near and dear to me for sure.”

    Yes, he certainly is!

    -Bear

    MJL356…

Thanks for the heads up. I had to see it to believe it. BG Season 4 is #10 in total music sales. I am stunned that there are only 9 albums outselling mine, and 6 of them Michael Jackson’s! What a surreal idea.

I’m also the #1 selling MOVIE soundtrack (even though it’s not a movie), outselling the new Harry Potter and the Twilight pop songs album.

As if that weren’t amazing enough, check out the top 5 selling TV soundtracks. See anything else familiar? :)

    -Bear

There’s something kind of obscene about those statistics. And yea, I’d feel pretty surreal knowing Jackson was my chief competitor on Amazon at the moment. AND you did a cover of Earth Song… coincidence?!

You do have plans to continue releasing soundtracks for future projects, right? Dark Void, for example? It seems to work a little different in the video game world: soundtracks often get released for free like Dawn of War, Bioshock, Viva Pinata, etc. Does it just vary by artist and contract?

Oh and while I’m still thinking of the Saturday show, tell Paul that my girlfriend thought he was adorable (she giggled when he hushed us in the first act) and she’s bummed he didn’t sign my CD. He wasn’t in the room yet. I thought he was great, too!

    Anthony

    Up to #7 on Amazon!!!!

Whoa! #7 in total music sales! This is astonishing! 5 of the 6 albums outselling me are Michael Jackson. So awe-inspiring.

ieatglue528… “I’d feel pretty surreal knowing Jackson was my chief competitor on Amazon at the moment. AND you did a cover of Earth Song… coincidence?!”

Somehow, I don’t know. Seems pretty cosmic doesn’t it? :) And I’ll tell Paul you say hi!

    -Bear

ieatglue528… “You do have plans to continue releasing soundtracks for future projects, right? Dark Void, for example? ”

And yes, DV will have a soundtrack release through Sumthing Else. I don’t know the details yet, but it will get out there for sure.

    -Bear

Inched up to #6. Damn, how high you going to get?

It’s now number six on Amazon >.>

Also, it was sweet meeting you, Bear. Hope to see you again at some other thing at some other time. =)

You are not #6 on amazon.com!!!!

Wow, unbelievable how Amazon goes so low with their price. Just ordered the autographed one for 29$ shipping included at LLL. Let’s just hope you get a bigger portion of the share there. ;)

*** You, ARE, number 6. Wow, I need to proof read, haha.

    Bear,

I think the autographed copies are already sold out:
    http://www.lalalandrecords.com/BattleStarGalactica4.html

That was nice and fast !!!

    Everyone… yeah, now it’s #6! That’s a good omen for a BATTLESTAR CD! >:)

    OneBuckFilms…

Yeah, the autographed copies on the La La Land website sold out in about 90 minutes I think. I signed a TON of them this morning, but I guess they went pretty fast.

    -Bear

I’d offer to buy a few more but I just bought the complete Blu-Ray box today… >:)

Holy Frak! It’s at #4 now!!

    -Bear

    Congrats Bear!

I just want to say I am absolutely LOVING the album… by far your finest piece of work that you should be very proud of. The rankings are just icing on the cake. I could sit here and talk forever about it, but I won’t. The mix is just fantastic…It’s just seriously rockin and I am recommending this album to everyone… I think some of my friends are getting sick of hearing me talk about it! Haha.

I can’t wait to see what you have to say about the track by track breakdown, and about the concerts this past weekend.

No more autographed copies!? I had that site as my homepage so I could order it as soon as they went on sale, and then I got busy and forgot to check it! D’oh! Anyway, the Amazon.com numbers are rather amazing, but you’re still not at #1 where you should be, so I will instead purchase it from there to help bump it up even further. Oh yeah, and as for the blog topic, I don’t know a thing about this new Fox show, but I’m totally going to watch it just for your score, and I know I’m not the only one. In fact, they should probably stick your name in the promos.

Bear says: “Holy Frak! It’s at #4 now!!”

Awesome! #4 and climbing! Also 18 days in the top 100! Congrats Bear!

    #4? Holy Frak indeed !!!

    Well deserved, bear !!!

Hey Bear ive orderd your S4 soundtrack and should get it in a couple days.Cant wait!Out of curiosity before I get it what are the English lyrics to the baltars cult track? And do the cds include the version of the colonial anthem that was played in the RAZOR shorts?Or will the razor music be a separate release?

One last thing thats a little off topic.I came across a well written fanfic thats a crossover bewteen T.S.C.C and BSG.I brought this up because I know you also did the music for TSCC.And no im not the one who wrote it.

If you have time from your busy schedule you should read it. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4960624/1/An_Angel_With_No_Fate

Perhaps you should make a suggestion to the scifi channel to pick up TSCC and make it a sequel to BSG.I bet Ron Moore or David Eick would be open to that.

Also cant wait for Dark Void!I loved Crimson Skies so im betting it will be a great game too.

Congrats, Bear! I haven’t stopped listening since Thursday night. Well deserved, indeed.

#4!! Wow, I just looked up to see it with my own eyes – holy frakking sh*t! I have not seen a soundtrack be so popular since James Horner’s Titanic over ten years ago. You keep on rocking and kicking ass Bear! Congrats!!

i am from Portugal and i would love to get my hands on this, amazon.co.uk only have this on august 10 :-((

Bear, don’t you want to get some sun in Portugal :-) and sign some CD’s too ?

On amazon.co.uk the BSG Season4 soundtrack is only 5th in the TV soundtrack category … but it costs £27.89 there! Thats ~§45!!

Oh and from the previews I thought that Human Target is one show I will definitely not see a single episode of. I just changed my opinion though. :D

Just got the music 2 day and found the lyrics too.

I guess the razor music will be a separate release? And are they still going to release the plan?Or has that been canceled.

Bear, one of MY good friends just told me that HIS good friend is joining/joined the orchestra? Peter Cho? Bald badass Korean guitarist from USC? Truth? If so that rocks, and you rock, and you will both rock together.

    Anthony

and on Amazon.com’s General Soundtracks section you are #2 between Michael Jackson’s HIStory on film Vol.2 and Dangerous Short films (dont know why those DVDs are in this section, Free Willy?)

Got the Season 4 soundtrack today and I just have to say: HOLY FRAK!

I know how hard you worked putting this thing together and it really shows.

    Thank you.

Bear: Please, if you would, convey your thanks for the end credits of the extended version of Daybreak on the DVD set… they gave full credit to the ENTIRE music ensemble, including naming the entire orchestra by name. That is absolutely fabulous. They are well deserved :-)

Bear, Please Sir….. Can we have some more?
I know it must have been grueling picking and choosing what to leave off #4 I mean it’s 2 stuffed Compact Discs and I’m sure you included as much of your Scores for season 4 as much as possible just a devoted fan of your Music one among many I’m sure who would be thrilled to hear that your doing a follow up compilation CD. In the haze of my memory I remembering a few months back you mentioning that as a possibility. For a lack of better words Ever since the release of your Season 1’s Scores I have avidly awaited the Release of each CD of yours since. Bravo just dose not cover my enjoyment of your work. If I were still on active duty and could only bring 5 CDs… Please Sir… could we have some more?

    Holy moly :o
Congratulations Bear on blitzing Amazon.com’s CD sales. This must be a historic day for soundtrack sales.

Bear, your season 4 soundtrack is everything and more than I imagined it would be. I have not stopped listening to it since I got it. I just let it play straight through because every track is outstanding, rarely have I skipped to a specific track.
Thank you for putting “Cally Descends” and “Boomer Takes Hera”. These are 2 I was afraid may not make the release, but are frakking awesome. Also thank you for putting both vocal and instrumental versions of Gaeta’s Lament. The instrumental version is one of my favorites from the entire series (not to say I dont like the vocal version, its amazing!).
You also made a very good choice by adding the 2nd disc for Daybreak, it alone is a masterpiece. “So Much Life” brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it.

I’d be content if this soundtrack was the only album I could ever listen to again. Thank you Bear!

I bought mine at Barnes and Noble yesterday. Thank you for another absolutely excellent soundtrack album. I bought the Season 4.5 DVDs yesterday, too, and I was honestly much more excited to crack open the soundtrack. (My spouse and I cried a little during the Starbuck Disappears track, and our crying persisted through the rest of the disc.)

I look forward to this series much because of your score, but also Jackie Earle Haley. He is an excellent actor. I loved him in Little Children and Watchmen.

As for the soundtrack, it is possibly my favorite album of all time. I love “The Signal” and “Among the Ruins”. Those are very original pieces.

“Assault on the Colony” is another favorite. I feel like it would have concluded better with “Kara’s Coordinates”(my favorite rendition of AATW by far), but I don’t know how that would have worked on the construction of the album. “The Shape of Things to Come” quote worked incredibly well as a finish, though.

I just bought the album and wow, I couldn’t be more pleased with what you have done here. It’s just a masterpiece. My favorites are “Gaeta’s Lament” (vocals), “Laura Runs”, “The Cult of Baltar”, “Elegy”, “Blood on the Scales”, “Kara Remembers”, “Laura’s Baptism”, “The Line”, “Assault on the Colony”, “Baltar’s Sermon”, “Kara’s Coordinates” (the combination of these 4 tracks is just….brilliance), “Goodbye, Sam”, “The Heart of the Sun”, “So Much Life”, and “An Easterly View”. And yes, I do just realize I basically listed off the whole CD…sorry about that haha.

I just love it. Amazing work! This and the BSG 4.5 DVDs made my week! Awesome.

    OMG!

Three of my favorite actors and my favorite composer on the same show. I am in TV heaven.

ieatglue… “Bear, one of MY good friends just told me that HIS good friend is joining/joined the orchestra? Peter Cho? Bald badass Korean guitarist from USC? Truth? If so that rocks, and you rock, and you will both rock together.”

Peter was one of our roadies in San Diego, actually. He was great!

musiccpaladin2007… “Bear: Please, if you would, convey your thanks for the end credits of the extended version of Daybreak on the DVD set… they gave full credit to the ENTIRE music ensemble, including naming the entire orchestra by name. That is absolutely fabulous. They are well deserved :-)”

Yes. It’s a wonderful chance in the DVD versions to get the credits for the musicians that they deserve in every episode.

    -Bear

Hera’s “stars” in the spine of the CD’s jewel box were a nice touch too…

    - M. \”/

Hey guys… ScoringSessions.com just uploaded a bunch of great pictures from the HUMAN TARGET pilot scoring session last spring. Check’em out:

    http://www.scoringsessions.com/news/187/

    -Bear

I know that’s months ago, but Bear…. You look tired. =p

    GungaDin… “I know that’s months ago, but Bear…. You look tired. =p”

You have no idea. I had just come back from Germany, and was simultaneously doing another pilot for ABC that same week. Damn, I was exhausted. But the HT music was certainly energizing!

    -Bear

I’ve noticed Human Target ads running this past week! Do you know if they altered the pilot at all from what we saw at Comic-Con?

    Cory…

Cool! I hadn’t seen any HT ads yet, but I’m glad they’re starting the media push on it already. You know, I think the pilot is going to be tweaked slightly, but basically its 99% the same thing that screened at Comic Con. The biggest difference is that you’ll actually be able to HEAR the score this time, because it won’t be playing on that atrocious sound system. :)
