    Comic Con Appearances

Posted by Bear McCreary on July 21st, 2009

Hey gang, I’m getting ready to head down to San Diego for Comic Con tomorrow night.  It’s going to be a crazy week, but I’m looking forward to rocking out the House of Blues with all of you on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  I’ll also make a few appearances at the convention and wanted to let you know about them.  If you’re around, stop by and say hi!

    THURSDAY, JULY 23rd:

    Richard Hatch: Battlestar Retrospective Panel
Comic Con Convention Center – Room 6A
    12:30 – 1:30PM

Moderated by actor/author Richard Hatch (Tom Zarek, Capt Apollo), this panel includes writer / producer Michael Taylor, science advisor Kevin Grazier and myself, providing a review, discussion and Q&A of Battlestar’s past four seasons and dramatic ending.

    The Music of Battlestar Galactica
Live Concert Performance Hosted by Edward James Olmos
    7PM (doors open) to Midnight
House of Blues San Diego, 1055 Fifth Ave.

    Tickets Available from Ticketmaster
(the promotional password is “frak” for a cheaper rate!)

Each night of our shows will be a little different, but the THURSDAY NIGHT performance will be extra special.  Not only is it the first place on Earth to get autographed season 4 CDs, but you’ll hear world-premiere performances of new Galactica music from “The Plan” before anyone else.

Oh, and the Thursday night show will feature an EXCLUSIVE SURPRISE PERFORMER: a guest pianist who will join me onstage for a duet of the pivotal piano music from Someone to Watch Over Me that she… well, I don’t want to spoil it.  :)

UPDATE 7-22: We just confirmed another surprise guest for Thursday, and a few more for Friday and Saturday.  I’ll give you a hint:  One of them is a Cylon and another one was a suspected Cylon!  :)

This series of concerts will be the biggest I’ve ever done.  The set list is literally TWICE as long as the concerts at The Roxy and California Plaza.  We’re showing an exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming video documentaries on the BluRay release of Season 4.5, and you’ll see cast members discuss the music and what it brought to the series.  All this and a slammin’ rock concert!  This is not just a quick set, but an entire evening celebrating Battlestar Galactica.  Come join us and help bring this music to life on stage!

Wanna see our rehearsals?  Photographer Andrew Craig created this 360 degree photo at our rehearsal last night.  Click on the image below to see it:

And that’s not even the full band!

    FRIDAY, JULY 24th:

    Dark Void Signing
    Booth on the Convention Floor
    Noon to 1pm

I will be signing and meeting fans along with Dark Void producer Morgan Gray.  I can’t wait to see what Capcom will unveil of this highly-anticipated title.

If you haven’t heard of this game yet, check out my blog entry about it that includes score excerpts!  Also, Joystiq has an incredible gallery of images that are simply breathtaking.  And check out the official site where I’m guest blogging.

    The Music of Battlestar Galactica
Live Concert Performance Hosted by Edward James Olmos and Grace Park
    7PM (doors open) to Midnight
House of Blues San Diego, 1055 Fifth Ave.

    Tickets Available from Ticketmaster
(the promotional password is “frak” for a cheaper rate!)

    SATURDAY, JULY 25th:

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 Soundtrack Comic Con Signing
La La Land Records Table at the Screen Archives / Film Scoring Monthly Booth on the Convention Floor
    1 to 3pm

    The Music of Battlestar Galactica
Live Concert Performance Hosted by Grace Park
    7PM (doors open) to Midnight
House of Blues San Diego, 1055 Fifth Ave.
    Tickets Available from Ticketmaster
(the promotional password is “frak” for a cheaper rate!)

    VIP CONCERT TICKETS:

The VIP experience at the House of Blues shows is pretty awesome.  The VIP section includes access to the hosted VIP only balcony, bar & Delta lounge, a meet and greet with various talent from BSG, Caprica, & other SyFy shows and autograph signing with Bear McCreary and the BSG Band.  You also get the VIP Gift Bag, including a Bear CD (not sure which one, honestly), Chipotle burrito cards, Coca Cola Products, Limited Edition BSG Key Chains and BSG Season 4 Collectible items exclusive to Comic Con.

    BSG SEASON 4 CD:

Comic Con this week presents the first chance to get your hands on the highly-anticipated new Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 soundtrack album, which officially releases next week.

A reader on my blog (thanks Duckey!) recently pointed out that it’s been climbing up the ranks on Amazon.com, even though it doesn’t officially release until next week.  BSG Season 4 is currently the #2 selling soundtrack album, outselling even the score for the new Harry Potter movie that just opened.  It’s very surreal to see my soundtrack wedged between two pop culture sensations such as Twilight and Harry Potter!  :)

That’s all the news fit to print right now.  I’ll keep blogging from San Diego with updates if the schedule changes.  And later in the week, I’ll announce the Comic Con screening of my newest tv project.  See you in San Diego!

    -Bear

Im glad to hear your new album does so well, even though the album isn’t released yet! I can’t wait till it gets here when it’s released, it’s the missing peace of my bsg collection and I have high expectations of it;)

Sounds great! My brother and I will definitely stop by on Saturday.

Awesome sauce. And the SAE/FSM booth is still 427?

See you at the panel! =)

Nice to see that it’s outselling the new Harry Potter soundtrack :)

Congratulations, again Bear. Its amazing how much these performances have grown in just a few years, and frakkin’ awesome to see you and the band get the well-deserved recognition at Comic-Con and on the BSG docs. I am so frakkin’ happy that I bought VIP tickets for Thursday night! I can’t wait!!

    @GungaDin: I believe it’s at 429.

I do hope we will have a chance to hear this astounding concert somehow? It sounds absolutely incredible, and your stuff from the last concert found its way on my ipod. It was played a lot, despite the horrible sound quality that comes from a home video-camera across a lake. Somebody, somehow, let us see! The thought of that great music not being preserved for the coming years makes me a sad Duckey.

I’m green with envy for you lucky enough to be there….

    Great news on the soundtrack!

For the HOB shows, will we be able to bring cameras? Is there a policy for that? Is there any kind of dress code?

Bear, I was wondering if you know whether or not cameras are allowed inside? It would be great to be able to take pictures during the meet-and-great. I know you have no control, but I’m not sure what HOB’s rules are.

Ah, I’m SO jealous. I want to go to Comic-Con. I want to go to the concerts. I want to have the new CD. Ugh *head bang* Unfortunately, I can’t make it there, obviously, but I second Duckey: videos? Please? I’m sure we would all be very, very, VERY happy to get some; I know I would be. I’m not very curious about the “exclusive ‘The Plan’ music”!

Congrats on the success of the CD, even before it’s released. you deserve it!

    The booth is 429

Now if only we could con all of you to come up to the Penny Arcade Expo too! =)

I’d buy it again if it would help knock Twilight off the top spot.

    Hi Bear
I’m a huge fan and am really looking forward to the show.
I’m going with my 22 year old daughter both Friday and Saturday and purchased our tickets immediately when they went on sale (2 VIP 2 Regular).
I’m a little disappointed however that now there is a “special” promotional rate for the shows with the password.
This option wasn’t available when I bought my tickets and could have saved me $80 over the two nights.
Is there any chance HOB or Ticketmaster is going to give a refund to folks like me who paid top dollar for the same tickets available later at a discount? That extra money could help me buy a whole lot more Battlestar Swag including a few soundtrack CDs.
    LOL

A tweet of mine from last night:

Listening to new 2-CD soundtrack from Battlestar Galactica S4. Starts off amazing and ends up sublime. Bear McCreary creates sonic beauty.

Don’t forget to follow @bsglive ! Didn’t even realize they were there until I checked my followers.

Bear, I know you are crazy busy but it would be so awesome to read a quick twitter from you sometime. (I know–Twitter is dumb but I can hope–and it is cool when someone you dig drops a line or two. .)

The panoramic photo is awesome. Thanks to Mr.Craig.

I’m missing Bear and the band in San Diego and Comic-Con. It a definite consolation to have the new CDs.*** The insert is many pages long and high quality. Jamie Bamber’s comments put me over the top. Hard to read through tears…
I feel like I’m being taken through the entirety of Galactica from miniseries through “Daybreak.”

I’ll be thinking of you and sending out tweets for the House of Blues Shows. They should sell out! We need to get the word out about the BSG Orchestra. They are fantastic _live_ and we need to support them so they can tour in the future.

    Best always,
    Cyn (from Chicago)

*Obtained early through La-La Land’s promo peeps.

Oh hey, as a heads up there are a bunch of BSG nominations in the Tubeys if you guys want to vote and show your love: http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/tubeys/nominees.php

Definitely looking forward to meeting you and seeing the concert on Friday! So say we all!

Oh sweet, I’ll be there Thursday night, so can’t wait for the surprise performer! And I also like to know if cameras would be allowed inside. I definitely want to take photos of the event, just to rub it in my friends’ faces that I was indeed there. hahaha (=

    @Chaotica

I don’t know if I can handle that voting… It’s just the first one but it’s already asking me to make an impossible choice between Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, and Summer Glau!

@Chaotica: That website is terribly confusing to use. I couldn’t find any BSG stuff :(

i’m still frakking excited to be there friday night! can’t wait :)

    OMG! OMG! OMG!

Bear, you just mentioned my two most favorite things in the world in the same sentence. Battlestar Galactica and Harry Potter. As much as I love Harry Potter, your music is far superior (even to the John Williams score). Did I mention that the HP score doesn’t even compare to yours? Haha. Had to comment.

    -Mike

    P. S. If, for some weird-miracle-wonderful-far-out reason, they asked you to score Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I would die. It would be a dream come true. As always, LOVE your music.

This is why I trust you, Bear! You told me to trust you, when I said I was worried about which night to pick! I trusted you.. and I trusted myself.. and I picked thursday. And OMG I CAN’T FRAKING WAIT! I was really hoping I’d get to see our special guest, and was at least hoping to have someone from the show show up besides even that person. And lo and behold? you give us olmos on thursday. Then you told me drinks were free. Now we hear more about the goodie bags. And I tell you, i’m about to crap myself in anticipation of this concert!

I’m going to have to thank you personally when I get my stuff signed on thursday. I’ll be in costume if I havn’t rosted alive that day in my bsg bdu’s.. And I will probably make no sense at all, because i’ll be shy, giddy, and nervous. But dear sir, you are the most awesome person in the world. And I’ve never known someone so dedicated to his fans. I just wish there was something else I could give you but my sincere thanks and a lot of yelling and clapping on thursday! haha.

One question though, obviously, that a lot of us have. Cameras? Heard anything? Just need to know if I must make a last minute trip to the car to ditch mine.

Thanks again for putting all of this together. Have a great time at the con!
    ~Michael aka Husker75

Everyone… I don’t yet know what the policy on photography is. I’m 100% certain that no flash photography is allowed, but that goes without saying at a concert performance in a small club like this. Now, whether or not you’re allowed to take pix without a flash… we’re looking into it.

Clubs like this are usually very strict. Either way, definitely be discreet about it. :) I’d sure love to see pictures taken from the crowd… hint hint…

    -Bear

Duckey… “I do hope we will have a chance to hear this astounding concert somehow?”

You will, trust me. And it will sound WAY better than the camcorder stuff from the California Plaza. >:)

hurcaneman… “This option wasn’t available when I bought my tickets and could have saved me $80 over the two nights.”

A drag, I know. I don’t know if there’s a discount like that, but I can safely say that the show will be totally worth it anyway. Believe me. :)

Cyn… “Listening to new 2-CD soundtrack from Battlestar Galactica S4.”

    Ooooooh, you’re a tease, aren’t you!

MJL356… “If, for some weird-miracle-wonderful-far-out reason, they asked you to score Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I would die.”

I would freakin’ love to score a Harry Potter film… but… I still hope they bring back John Williams for the last two films.

Husker75… “This is why I trust you, Bear! You told me to trust you, when I said I was worried about which night to pick! I trusted you.. and I trusted myself.. and I picked thursday.”

Trust is good. Trust me when I say that the shows are going to frakkin’ destroy you! :)

“I just wish there was something else I could give you but my sincere thanks and a lot of yelling and clapping on thursday! haha.”

    There is!

My answer goes out to everyone…

Just help spread the word. I still run into BG fans that haven’t heard about these shows. I think there are a lot of people out there who haven’t been reached yet. So let everyone know that these shows are happening, because it really is a communal event. The bigger and more BSG-crazy the crowd, the more we feel it up on stage.

    See you guys there!
    -Bear

Bear, unless something changed I thought John Williams was already confirmed to come back for the final two Potter films. Not to say Nicholas Hooper didn’t do an excellent job with the current one — I thought it sounded great.

I’m very sad that I can’t be at the concert on Saturday night. I hope you’ve got a nice high-quality Blu-ray release planned for these!

    Cory-

From what Ive heard, Williams is open to returning and the producers have said they are trying to work out the scheduling to make it happen but it is nowhere near a done deal yet. Fingers crossed though.

    Dear Bear,

Living in Germany and having missed the show in Hagen can be really depressing with all those upcoming concerts in the States… Anyway, although this might not be the perfect place for it, my fiancee and I wanted to kindly inform you that “The Shape of Things to Come” will accompany the Bride to the altar this Friday here in Berlin. And we’d like to thank you very much for that outstanding and beautiful piece of music. :)

    Best wishes,
    Matthias (&Sarah), Berlin, Germany

http://www.siradio.fm/news/Its_Good_to_Be_a_BSG_Fan_Right_Now Aye aye Cap’n. o7 :) (Hope you don’t mind the image pilfering, I’m at work so doing image searching and resizing is a pain. :)

    Chaotica…

Thanks for helping spread the news! Pilfer away. :)

Matthias & Sarah… “my fiancee and I wanted to kindly inform you that “The Shape of Things to Come” will accompany the Bride to the altar this Friday here in Berlin.”

Congratulations on the wedding. I’m honored that you would select one of my compositions for the ceremony! While you’re getting married in Germany, my band will be blasting out Battlestar music at the House of Blues in San Diego! (I was just in Berlin a few months ago too.)

    -Bear

Ok, so the word on cameras:

    NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY
    NO VIDEO TAPING

So, as long as you’re discreet and don’t use a flash, you should be fine. :) If you get any good shots, send them to me!

    -Bear

    BSGORCHESTRA BLOG

Check it out! Percussionist Jonathan Ortega has updated the blog on the official orchestra website with some rehearsal photos from the past couple days. Cool!

    -Bear

Wow, I’m going to miss out on so much fun this week. Good luck to you Bear and all of your musicians for your upcoming performances, I know they are going to rock. From what you mentioned earlier, it sounds like this is going to be recorded so I’m very pleased we’ll get a chance to experience the concert(s) in some form if we can’t attend.
Also, once again congrats on your album success, you should start showing up on some magazine covers for this one. :) Can’t wait to receive my copy!

Could someone sneak some discreet videos please? Lol. For those of us less fortunate?

I am green with envy for those who get to go. Look forward to hearing (hopefully literally) about how it goes! I’m sure y’all will be great, you always are.

Thanks for the info on photos, Bear. I damn near fell out of my chair when you announced your first surprise guest. I was hoping for this! And I can’t wait to find out who the others are.

Just got back from Comic-Con. Just got my season four soundtrack. It’s uh…. It’s awesome.

    GungaDin, same here.

So far, I’m on track 7, Among the ruins, and it’s awesome.

Who knew Alessandro had such a great voice?

Hey, Bear, it was great bumping into you at Comic-Con this afternoon! (My daughter and I were the ones in the Cunning Hats.) See you at your panel tomorrow… better get some sleep!

Ya know, I’d totally buy the CD set “Bear McCreary re-scores your favorite movies.”

But I agree, that Harry Potter series totally needs John Williams back.

And everybody quit talking about how awesome the soundtrack is! I ordered it from Amazon along with the BSG 4.5 Bluray, and that comes out I think next week, and it’s coming all the way to Finland. It’s gonna take ages!

    Oh the humanity!

    Bear,

On a smaller note. I just saw your BSG Season 1 OST in a HMV in my hometown; Dublin, Ireland, which is the 1st time ever I’ve seen any of your CDs on my shores (I always have to order them). You’re not only beating Harry Potter, you’re going world wide as well :)

Aw, man. I’d LOVE to watch this panel discussion! Why is all the awesome stuff in California? I know, I know; the whole TV industry is there. I’d go, but I’m half a continent away. I’d love to ask questions of you guys, especially Michael Taylor! Then again, I’d get all nervous about what I had to ask, I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on what you folks were saying. I wish they put some of the serious stuff on DVD. I’d totally buy it. You can’t even buy the Paley Center talks on itunes in Canada!

I’ll save more detailed thoughts about the soundtrack when Bear’s inevitable in-depth post arrives, but I’ll just say one thing.

    It’s incredible.

    Hi Bear

“I would freakin’ love to score a Harry Potter film… but… I still hope they bring back John Williams for the last two films. ”

It’s already in talks and the rumours starting to spread as Nicholas Hooper announced in a FSM interview he won’t return for the last two films.
JW would be greatly appreciated especially for the last one. He started it and after the oscar deserving Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack we could only expect one of the finest soundtracks in the recent years.
Problems could be his schedule with Tintin in the works for Spielberg

I have to admit it would be amazing if you would get the opportunity to score maybe the penultimate film.
(If a TV nobody like Nicholas Hooper is allowed to score two Potter films why not you too – you are although younger as Hooper times more qualified and talented)

After your reply to a post in October 2008 i also have no doubt that you would bring back established themes for cameos and maintain the Potter identity.
That was one of the problems that people like Hooper and Doyle only brought back Hedwig’s theme rarely and therefore a lot of Potter identity was lost.

The end of your reply in October 2008:
“But, trust me, I know what it’s like to get a gig and feel the temptation to throw the old themes out and write new ones. It can be hard to overcome, but I’ve always tried to think about what suits the project best and what the fans would want to hear.”

Thats the ideal attidue if joining a franchise. It’s great you got that insight in young years because unfortunately lots of composers never get that. They are too proud to work with other people’s material even if it would suit the movie best.

Bear, please tell me that shirts like the one you were wearing today (saw from @bsglive twitpic) will be available to purchase. I hope you don’t say at the concerts only :/. That’s a frakkin’ awesome shirt.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 Soundtrack Comic Con Signing
La La Land Records Table at the Screen Archives / Film Scoring Monthly Booth on the Convention Floor
    1 to 3pm

Bear — where IS this booth? It’s not listed under any of those names in the schedule or online.
    Thanks!

MattH… “you should start showing up on some magazine covers for this one.”

I made the cover of INTERNATIONAL MUSICIAN for the Roxy shows! :)

“Bear, please tell me that shirts like the one you were wearing today (saw from @bsglive twitpic) will be available to purchase. I hope you don’t say at the concerts only :/. That’s a frakkin’ awesome shirt.”

Unfortunately, at this point its an EXTREMELY limited edition: there’s only one in the universe. :) Maybe we’ll run up some more and sell them on the BSGOrchestra website in a few weeks.

NancyW… “Bear — where IS this booth? It’s not listed under any of those names in the schedule or online.”

I think it’s 429. It’s at the Northern end of the floor, and… it’s TINY! It’s like an 8th of a booth, so it’s really easy to miss. However, there’s a giant 8 foot poster of the BG Season 4 CD, so that will be easy to spot.

    -Bear

Oy, I hate living on the boring side of the country, I end up missing out on all these awesome events :-(

–Bear, please tell me that shirts like the one you were wearing today (saw from @bsglive twitpic) will be available to purchase. I hope you don’t say at the concerts only :/. That’s a frakkin’ awesome shirt.

-”Unfortunately, at this point its an EXTREMELY limited edition: there’s only one in the universe. :) Maybe we’ll run up some more and sell them on the BSGOrchestra website in a few weeks.”

Please, please, do make some more. My brother and I both desperately want that shirt! And if you guys can’t do that any chance you can share the original image you used for it? That way maybe the fans can make themselves a few.
