BSG Orchestra @ HOB: What do you want to hear?

Posted by Bear McCreary on July 4th, 2009

As you know, I am performing live in concert with The Battlestar Galactica Orchestra at the House of Blues San Diego on July 23rd, 24th and 25th, the week of Comic Con.

A few months ago, I asked all of you for suggestions for the Season 4 soundtrack album, in a blog post called “The Season 4 CD: What do you want to hear?”  Well, I need your ideas again!  What do you think should be on the set list for our big HOB concerts?

Here’s the set list from our show last month, at California Plaza in downtown LA:

    A Distant Sadness
    Precipice
    Fight Night
    Gina Escapes
    Caprica
    Gaeta’s Lament
    Roslin and Adama
    Wander My Friends
    Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1
    Baltar’s Dream
    Dirty Hands
    Lords of Kobol
    Prelude to War
Kara Remembers / Heeding the Call
    All Along the Watchtower
    Black Market

That set played very well, but I’d like to expand it for the upcoming shows and add some more material.  Here are a few of the songs I’m considering adding:

Resurrection Hub – From The Hub.

The Cult of Baltar – A great vocal piece from Season 4.

Elegy - The solo piano piece from the beginning of Someone to Watch Over Me.  I wouldn’t want to slow the pace of the concert down with two piano pieces, because I’m also playing Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1.  However, everyone seems to love this one.

Wayward Soldier – We actually did this last year at The Roxy and it sounded pretty good.  But, its never struck me as a fan favorite.

The Dance – This could be a blast, but again, I’ve never considered it a track that people really love.

Worthy of Survival - This is a companion piece to Prelude to War and could sound cool.

Pegasus - We actually performed this in 2006 at The Mint.  It works really well live, but I must confess, it’s not one of my personal favorites.

A Promise to Return - We performed this string-quartet piece last year at The Roxy, and I was nervous it was too low-key and quiet for the rock-club atmosphere.  What did you guys think?  Was it a nice change of pace or did it feel out of place?  I’m also considering Allegro, but it potentially suffers from the same issue.

Two Funerals / Forgiven - These pieces would work well together, but the result might be too ambient and slow.

So, what do you guys think?  Log in and leave a comment below.

    Tickets are still on sale:

I definitely think the Hub and Cult of Baltar are must haves, particularly the Hub.

Wayward Soldier is one of my season 3 favs as well.

Hope I get to see videos of whatever is played.

That sounds like a pretty sweet setlist. But some other possibilities could be “Violence and Variations,” “Something Dark is Coming”or “Adama Falls” and “Under the Wing.” If not all the pieces are really good!

Hmm… The Hub would be cool, but part of it has to do with your instrumentation… are you going with a similar instrumentation as you have in the past?

I think The Hub works better with a full orchestra… though you were able to pull off Prelude to War with your small ensemble…so…. IDK.

BTW, I have been considering arranging Prelude to War for Marimba Quartet (or ensemble, if you wanted to double the parts) with percussion… that’d be really cool.

Wayward Soldier is really cool… I actually think that would be fun live.

The Dance would be a fun one.

How bout The Signal? Haha just kidding. (Though I know you were just kidding too and they did it in the ballet anyway, so…who knows!)

Oh and what about using Kara’s Coordinates as a lead-in for All Along the Watchtower just to change things up? That piece would be rockin in concert although on its’ own it’s kinda short.

“Something Dark is Coming!” I forgot to include it in the list. We played that piece at The Mint in 2006 and at the Roxy shows last years. I cut it from the set because I was afraid it was too slow and long, but I’m definitely considering bringing it back for the July shows.

    -Bear

musicpaladin2007… “How bout The Signal? Haha just kidding. (Though I know you were just kidding too and they did it in the ballet anyway, so…who knows!)”

Don’t joke. :) It was on the short list of contenders, but I ultimately decided it would be too impossibly difficult to pull off with this ensemble. Kinda need the full orchestra and full choir to do it.

    -Bear

Something Dark Is Coming is one of my favourite pieces on the S2 soundtrack, I’m sure it’d be amazing live. I wouldn’t worry about it being slow or long, Bear, we’re hardcore fans! We want to hear this stuff!

I’m delurking just to speak my mind on two pieces, even though there’s no way I’ll be able to come to the concert ;)

Wayward soldier not being a fan favourite? You’ve got to be joking. One of these days, I woke up with it stuck in my head, and I couldn’t quite place it (haven’t seen the episode that often, as I found it somewhat lacking), so I went through all the albums I own, jumping back and forth between BSG and T:SCC… took me a while to find the right one, but it’s a favourite ever since!

Also, in my opinion, Elegy beats the Sonata. I’ve watched the beginning of that episode (and, usually, the rest of it right with it) countless times. And I agree with you in that Pegasus doesn’t quite fit the other pieces – which was very appropriate in the series, but… you know.

And one last tidbit – I absolutely love the orchestra pieces, all of them! Being a dancer (though not professional), I toyed with choreographies in my mind, and so I was absolutely blown away when I saw Prelude to War in Germany. Wow!

sadly, i’m not attending as i live on the other side of a biga$$ ocean, but i thought i’d ask for “roslin and adama”, the version with lyrics.

my heart has been sort of set on it since i heard it existed, and i’m halfway hoping some kind fan who’s lucky enough to attend would share a video of it if it was ever to be performed live again.

aside that, probably “battlestar sonatica”. it’s absolutely stunning, and, of course, “the hub”.

Of your proposed additions, my favorites are: “The Resurrection Hub”, “Wayward Soldier”, “A Promise to Return”. “The Dance” would likely be great live.

I’m hoping you’ll keep “Gaeta’s Lament” and of course, “Roslin and Adama”. You’ve given us so much wonderful music to choose from.

I’m very much looking forward to the HOB concert. Thanks, Bear!

You don’t think “Wayward Soldier” and “The Dance” are well like amongst the fans? I wonder why. Am I out of touch with everyone, perhaps? Whenever Wayward Soldier comes on I think “Not a fantastic episode, but man is this a killer piece of music.”

And as for “The Dance”, on top of being a great piece, that’s gotta sound amazing live.

But I’m not the best person to ask; I’m stick in Pittsburgh and won’t be able to make it out for the shows. So angry. So disappointed.

I’m not attending, but if I were I’d vote for a Pegasus performance. It’s always been a favorite of mine and I remember it particularly standing out for me when I first watched that episode.

And Battlestar Muzaktica, how could you not play that? I that would be a lot of fun to perform (get your accordian out) and hear. Seriously,it’s a piece that always evokes a smile.

    My top choices:

    * “The Shape of Things to Come” / “Passacaglia” – These have been my favorite pieces from BSG (heck, from all of television, actually). Although, “Diaspora Oratorio” comes a very close second.
    * “Battlestar Sonatica”
    * “Allegro”
    * Something with the Roslin/Adama theme.

BTW, regarding the San Diego performances. I’m still debating btwn regular and VIP, mainly because I’m going with my sister, and she’s admittedly not the hugest BSG fan (though obviously, I am). Your prior post said “meet and greet various talent”, does that include cast members? Also, do you have any general idea how long the entire set will last?

Resurrection Hub would be awesome live. As would Something Dark. And I think Wayward Soldier is a great song. I’d enjoy that live.

And I’m sorry you don’t care for “Pegasus” that much, but I think it’s brilliant. That cue brings me right back to the moment when they find the Pegasus. It’s a great moment. It’s one of the first things I remember thinking when I listened to the soundtrack for the first time. “Is this… This is when they find the Pegasus.” The sheer heroism of that song, lined with that taste of bittersweet makes it evocative and fantastic. I think it’d be interesting live.

I don’t know if I would want Something Dark is Coming. I find it too slow and uneventful even on the album.

I would go for “Resurrection Hub”, “Wayward Soldier”, “Pegasus” and something from “Lay Down Your Burdens”. Every piece from that episode was fantastic.

Honestly, at the Plaza, I walked away telling my fiance that it was a PERFECT set list. I kept turning to her throughout the entire thing going, “I hope they play this…” and “It would be awesome if they did this song…” and “this song is one of my favorites, I hope he does it…” and you did every single one! And in perfect order in my opinion.

I do agree that it would be cool to hear “Something Dark is Coming” live as that is one of my favorites but your set list at the Plaza was so perfect.

I would absolutely lovelovelove to hear ‘A Promise to Return’ live, no matter the size of the venue! Ditto on ‘Allegro’. Both those songs are incredibly pretty.

‘Worthy of Survival’ would also be great. I think it’s currently my favorite track. I imagine it would be awesome live.

Also count ‘The Dance’ and ‘Wayward Soldier’ as tracks that this fan, at least, really love. :)

I can’t wait to see the show!

“Something Dark Is Coming” is one of my favorites from all the albums. It might tend long played live, but it’s still a favorite.

Any of the related string pieces would be gorgeous: “Passacaglia”, “The Shape Of Things To Come”, “Allegro”, “Violence And Variations”, even “A Promise to Return” fits.

I also have an unaccountable fondness for “Mandala In The Clouds”. The string pulse starting at 1:36 just gets to me.

Want a total curveball? How about “Samson and Delilah”? I’m willing to bet Raya could belt that sucker.

No specific requests other than those. I mean, how do you pare down dozens of hours of great music to just 90 minutes or so? You’ve got a great ear for putting separate music tracks that work really well together, Bear. It’ll sound great regardless. See you in 19 days…

I won’t be there, since I’m on the other side of the continent, but I vote for “The Dance” and “Pegasus.” The former worked very well in the episode, as the cast reflect back on happy times while some of them get the cr*p kicked out of them. The latter is a great piece – for one, it might be the only BSG cue where bass guitar is used and something Very Bad is not imminent – and for another, it really reminds me of the second movement in Rush’s “2112″ in how it reveals something major through a simple theme played on the guitar.

What about “Storming New Caprica”? It’s a great action cue from a great episode…

I’d really love to hear the Colonial Anthem. It’s one of my favorites. :)

I’d also really love to hear A Good Lighter. :)

“The Hub” is one of my favorite pieces and I’m sure you could pull it off live, even without a full orchestra.

My three wishes, in your hand:

    The Hub
Violence and Variations (again, could work live)
    Worthy of Survival

Already mentioned, string pieces would be great : “Passacaglia”, “The Shape Of Things To Come” ;-)

So kind of you to ask some feedback.Thank you !

Ok. First, don’t worry so much about slow stuff. I know you are trying to keep a good rock show pace to things. And obviously that is important to keep energy up. But you have given us such INCREDIBLE music, be it loud, soft, fast, or slow, i (and i’d say most of us) love it all! Just because a song is on piano alone, or maybe a little sweeping and soft, don’t exclude it! It’s not like we are at a foo fighters concert, and all of the sudden dave grohl sat down and started playing a 20 minute piano piece! hehe. We LOVE your music, no matter what the pace!

So my selections would be these:

-ALLEGRO/PASSACAGLIA – either one. they are so beautiful and epic, and i’d love to hear either!

-TWO FUNERALS/FORGIVEN – Beautiful, and haunting. I actually get choked up when two funerals kicks into gear with the taps and such!

-MARTIAL LAW – I think this could probably even be expanded like you have done with some of the shorter peices. Not sure if it is popular, or a harder one to pull off, but it has that nice haunting feel for it too!

WORTHY OF SURVIVAL/PRELUDE TO WAR – That would be a great combo! Worthy isn’t too slow either, it has a nice build to it i think!

STORMING NEW CAPRICA – Ever tried this one with the group? It is so epic. Must be a beast to try and do live.. but man do i love it! It’s like a drum orgy! haha. The bagpipes are great, but i don’t know.. maybe you could find a work around if you couldn’t get anyone to play the pipes with ya?

WAYWARD SOLDIER – I love this.. it has a very strong pulse to it! If i’m not alone in support for it, you could always give it a shot thursday and see how the crowd reacts? :)

THE DANCE – I LOVE THE DANCE! That and Fight Night are big favs, and the energy is just infectious! Anything to capture that celtic feel i am all for!

RESURRECTION HUB – I loved this so much. PLEASE play it. It was beautiful! Everyone i watched The Hub with was just blown away by that music!

I don’t remember much of the cult of baltar, so i have no real opinion on that. Promise to return might be too mellow. But i missed the shows at the roxy so i don’t know how you did it.. so no real opinion on that one. Pegasus was really cool when i saw you at the mint.. but honestly, it’s not one of my favorites either. And i’d much rather hear something else that you listed! Elegy for instance! Like i said, i know you are worried about slowing things down, but you have tons of drum driven rockers, and i don’t think the fans are gonna begrudge you for slowing it down a bit. I won’t! :)

Have you ever tried out a variation of the shows main themes? It would be a fun little thing to hear, but depending on how hard it would be, might not be worth it. Just wondering if you’d tried anything with either of the themes before with the orchestra?

Your existing setlist is great! Amazing stuff there, and the great base for the shows. I think if you pick some of the ones you listed that you are considering to flesh it out more, you’ll be perfect! Almost every song you listed that you’d consider adding, i was going to suggest. So that makes me happy!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do these shows, and get so involved with the fans. You are the best, Bear! I can’t wait to see you guys on thursday after the con!

Oh, and as far as VIP stuff.. how early would you recommend showing up to the HOB?

Goodluck picking the rest of the list! Can’t wait to hear it and see it live!
    ~Michael

First of all, I should probably say hi. I’ve been reading this blog for about a year now, but never actually got around to posting here. And secondly, don’t worry too much about what you pick, the music that you’ve written for BSG over the years is all fantastic and any of it would be worthy of live performance.

Resurrection Hub – I’m re-watching The Hub and I just noticed before they turn on the hybrid again at the start, there’s a brief statement of Gaeta’s Lament. This could be amazing done live and it’d fit in with the epic-ness of Prelude to War.

Elegy – Personally, I’m not adverse to multiple piano pieces, I always love hearing piano stuff, especially the piano stuff from BSG.

Wayward Soldier – In comparison to stuff like “Kat’s Sacrifice” “The Dance” “Fight Night” this one really doesn’t stick out massively on the season 3 CD so I think it gets overlooked.

The Dance – The Dance is one of my personal favourites, it’s light and fun in comparison to a lot of the other stuff, it’d make a nice change to move away from some of the grr-ness of the likes of the action cues.

Worthy of Survival – The two would sound good together, but after Prelude to War, it might sound less impressive than it actually is, because – let’s face it – Prelude to War is just epic.

Pegasus – I have this in my “Best of BSG” playlist in iTunes, just before Lords of Kobol and Prelude to War and I think it would sound brilliant live.

A Promise to Return – This piece is… I dunno… it just didn’t click with me as well as the other stuff,

Two Funerals / Forgiven – How about trying Two Funerals/Season 1 Opening Credits (US version) to give it a bit more energy at the end?

Allegro – I like this one, and I’m sorta surprised that it hasn’t made all that much of an appearance in the live shows.

I’m sure that whatever set-list you pick will be amazing, it’s just a shame that I won’t be able to make it or get in… joys of being in England and being 19. I really hope that you’ll be able to do some Music of BSG concerts in England at some point.

And on a side-note, I’d quite happily sell body-parts for a recording of the arrangement of Wander My Friends from the June 13th show.

    Jon

I’m a huge Martial Law fan myself; Pegasus is also another classic. When you look back over the course of the show, there are definitely a large number of stand out moments in which the score and the scene itself completely mesh, and those two are definitely on the top of my list.

I really enjoyed the set at California Plaza and ‘Black Market’ was perfect for the encore. But I think
‘Wayward Soldier’ and ‘The Dance’ would make a fine addition: they are both high on my favorites list.

Long time lurker, but having purchased two VIP tickets to Thursday night, I HAD to post. Been listening to your music since the Season One soundtrack, and I would kill to hear “The Shape of Things to Come” live. I’d also be a grateful Colonial if you played a few others from my Best of Battlestar iPod playlist including “Colonial Anthem”, “Lords of Kobol”, and “Prelude to War”.

I’d be greedy and ask for more, but from what I’ve seen of the other concerts you’ll already be playing the rest of my list. I can’t wait!

I really love some of the more orchestral stuff from season 1, which probably doesn’t fit with what you’re looking to play, but if you did play one of them it would make my evening (Friday’s show)! :) My absolute favorites are “The Shape of Things to Come,” “Passacaglia,” and “Kobol’s Last Gleaming.”

If you play “The Dance,” I might have to bust out some Irish step dancing–it makes for a great fast hardshoe jig. :) I think the whole audience should break out in dance for that song!

Hmm… lots of good suggestions! So difficult… How about these:

    Samson and Delilah
    Sarah Connor’s theme

    Oops, wrong list…;)

I’d love to hear “The Dance”, “Two Funerals/Forgiven”, and anything from Daybreak. Oh, “Storming New Caprica” would be cool. I’m no help, cause I want it all.

Since most of them were already suggested, then what about “Martial Law” and right after it ends, the moment when Ellen Tigh resurrects in the baseship (OK I just suggested it cause its not on the album, but it would be a nice slow/powerful moment). And “Wayward Soldier” and “Worthy of Survival” would be great.

    Bear,

Obviously I haven’t heard the album version of “Blood on the Scales” but I would love to see it performed.

I would also love to hear “Something Dark is Coming”. “Violence and Variations” would make my friend cry.

Whatever you do, keep “Gaeta’s Lament”! Connecting “Elegy” to the sonata would be cool to.

    ….”Assault on the Colony”?!

dustchick… “I’m hoping you’ll keep “Gaeta’s Lament” and of course, “Roslin and Adama”.”

I’m not planning on cutting anything out of the set list from California Plaza, at least at this point.

CaptPorridge… “And Battlestar Muzaktica, how could you not play that? I that would be a lot of fun to perform (get your accordian out) and hear. Seriously,it’s a piece that always evokes a smile.”

Ha ha! I considered that one for about 5 seconds, yeah. It would be awesome. “Battlestar Operatica” wouldn’t be bad either. :)

unpossible… “Your prior post said “meet and greet various talent”, does that include cast members? Also, do you have any general idea how long the entire set will last?”

I can’t say for certain. There’s a possibility yes, but we just won’t know until the event. The meet / greet definitely includes me and the whole band, to sign posters / CDs, etc. The concert last year was about a 3 hour event, and this year will probably be close to that as well.

GungaDin… “And I’m sorry you don’t care for “Pegasus” that much, but I think it’s brilliant… I think it’d be interesting live.”

I enjoy it for what it was at the time I wrote it. I just know I could do it better now. In fact, that’s half the reason I’m considering doing it live at the show. :)

Blue Dude… “I also have an unaccountable fondness for “Mandala In The Clouds”. The string pulse starting at 1:36 just gets to me.”

That string lick is the reason to perform it for sure. It might work, but the ensemble for these shows doesn’t have quite enough percussion or strings to really nail it. Of course, that’s what I said last year about “Prelude to War” and it worked out pretty damn well at the CA Plaza…

“Want a total curveball? How about “Samson and Delilah”? I’m willing to bet Raya could belt that sucker.”

Yeah! That would be totally rockin’, actually. The idea HAD occurred to me. :)

Husker75… “Oh, and as far as VIP stuff.. how early would you recommend showing up to the HOB?”

I have no idea. Are the VIP seats reserved, or is it just general seating within the VIP area? I don’t even know, but I’d get there a little early, no matter what. :)

Jonny Boy… “Hmm… lots of good suggestions! So difficult… How about these:
    Samson and Delilah
    Sarah Connor’s theme
    Oops, wrong list…;)”

Don’t forget Atomic Al’s Merry Melody!

    -Bear

“Want a total curveball? How about “Samson and Delilah”? I’m willing to bet Raya could belt that sucker.”

    Bear wrote…
“Yeah! That would be totally rockin’, actually. The idea HAD occurred to me. :)”

Okay, now you guys have to do it. I know it ain’t BSG, but I would love to hear Raya blow that song through the roof.

As far as suggestions go, how about a sign that reads, “No clapping along with the music”? Is it weird that that bothers me? I guess I’m just picky. I just need to go with it. :)

I would love to hear the Adama Family theme, any way I can get it, and I would really enjoy “Kara’s Coordinates” leading into “All Along the Watchtower”. I love the electric fiddle during that scene, when the nukes hit the Colony, as well as the quote of Starbuck’s theme on electric fiddle followed by the Destiny theme. The version of the final five theme that follows would be an awesome lead-in to “Watchtower”.

Everyone’s forgetting the updated version of “Prologue” from 4.5. I had hoped it would have been included on the soundtrack, but “Prologue” into “A Distant Sadness” would be distilled awesome.

I’ve seen it mentioned here a couple of times, but I’d like to also endorse “Violence And Variations”.

Even on its own it’s a strong piece, but it’s even more moving when you consider the storyline to which it’s tied.

Plus, it’s one of my wife’s favorites and it’ll be her birthday, so PLEASE, Bear? PLEASE??? :)

I vote for The Dance and A Promise to Return, two of my favorites.

Not that I’ll be there. You need to take the show on the road. The Rococo Theatre in Lincoln NE is beautiful and really popular for concerts. Just, you know, throwing that out there ;-)

Everything that gets played is going to be, of course, PERFECT. We love it all. And I trust whatever you choose, but thanks for giving us the chance to throw our two cents out there! The Dance and Storming New Caprica are my all-time favorites. I am a freakish lover of Irish music and The Dance holds its own impressively!! (And I would dance, too, SeskaLien, it just wouldn’t look good :) Plus I simply can’t get enough percussion!! These are my go-to tracks when i’m out driving around.

For anyone else who has VIP tickets, it is general admission and it has its own line and entrance. There are pictures on the SD HOB’s website of the actual venue, and you can see how sweet it looks from up there. If you’re not sure whether to get the vip tix, maybe the view (and seats) will help sell you! I’m short, so it’s a relief to know i for sure will be able to see everything.
    (http://www.houseofblues.com/venues/clubvenues/sandiego, click on “virtual tour”)

Also, you can make reservations for dinner at the HOB, which my sister and I are doing. They told me if you have the non-VIP tix and you eat dinner there, you can enter the concert venue from inside and not the outside line. And if anyone is having trouble finding a hotel, CALL around periodically. I actually got a room in town because of a cancellation. Some hotels might have waiting lists or “unofficial” waiting lists.

Seeing as it’s my first concert, I’ll probably be happy with anything you play! :D Oh gawd tho, so many choices! Here are a few of my favs:

    Fight Night
    Violence and Variations
    Roslin and Adama
    Under the Wing
Something Dark is Coming (this was a piece that grew on me, and it’s one of my favs of all your work – I love how it builds on itself and no, I don’t think it’s too slow at all! Would squeal in delight if I heard this one!)
    Kara Remembers/Heeding the Call

And I’m serious when I say I’d love to hear Samson & Delilah and Sarah Connor’s theme in honor of SCC! Hearing the SCC theme would make me cry! But in a good way! :D

    fnedfm-

I’m still holding out that the prologue is tacked on to the front of the first track (A-la Heeding the call on A Distant Sadness from the Season 3 soundtrack). Realistically, it probably didn’t make the cut, but one can hope right?

Yeah, Bear, totally let me sing Sampson and Delilah. I would really REALLY love to sing something in frakkin English.

Don’t get me wrong, j’adore Armenian, and Anglo-saxon, and Sinhalese and Irish, and ….random sounds..but. Yeah. I would totally love to do that.

Unless you can get Shirley Manson to show up, in which case I would be instantly “out-cooled.”

    oh P.S.
You so have to do “The Dance”
when you gave me the demo for that I had it on repeat every morning. It’s too much fun.

And I like yer string q-tet pieces, I could listen to them allll the time. I vote for them! (and dude, you have Tina on cello, hello eye candy?)

    Bear,
Nothing would be greater than anything from Allegro, Passacalia, A Promise to Return, Violence and Variations, or The Shape of Things to Come. I tear up every time I hear Shape of Things to Come since it reminds me of that beautiful final scene on Earth 2 with Adama sitting next to Roslin. And Violence and Variations always reminds me of one of my fav. episodes “Unfinished Business”. You should do a medley of all these string heavy songs! They are simply amazing!

“Passacaglia” is a MUST, Bear! It’s the song that sums BSG up! It’s fenomenal!

My favorite, although, is “Battlestar Sonatica”. It’s the most beautiful piece, in my opinion, of music you composed for BSG (I’m a piano freak, I must say). It would be much better than “Elegy”, be sure of that. This song completely changed my life, I play it all the time, the ending is like… MAGNIFICENT! It may not be the coolest and I don’t know if it fits well the place, but, dear God, how amazing it is.

If you do not put either of these ones, no problem. Thank you for composing them anyway (and also for releasing “Battlestar Sonatica” sheets on the web!). I play them to my friends who do not watch BSG and they refuse to believe it was composed for a Sci-Fi TV series.

    Great shows, Bear!

Someone said it, I’ll reiterate. Violence and Variations would be awesome.

I’ve just heard “Refugees Return” and thought: How can this not be in the set list?! It’s so freaking beautiful! Jesus Christ! One of your finest pieces, Bear, marvellous!
“Mandala in the Clouds” and its strings are also breathtaking, Bear. I think it fits the place perfectly.
Oh, My God, how difficult it must be for you to decide after so much varied recomendations. I wouldn’t like to be in your skin right now, fella. Have fun deciding! Summing up, my recomendations are:
“Passacaglia”/”The Shape of Things To Come” (for there’s few music from season 1 in the list and these are, definitely, the best, better than Wander My Friends)
“Battlestar Sonatica” (for, now in my opinion, it’s the best piano piece of the series)
“Refugees Return” (for it’s magic, no more words)
“Mandala In The Clouds” (for the strings are absolutely breathtaking)

Have great shows, Bear! I’m from Brazil so I definitely, and unfortunately, won’t be there. Send us some videos!

I’ll throw out two cubits for Roslin & Adama, Fight Night, Wayward Soldier, Pegasus, & A Promise To Return. And Passacaglia, definitely! Although to be truthsome, I’ll be crazy excited just to be at the concert, so whatever ends up on the set list will be just aces with me.

“The Hub” is definitely worth adding, I was slightly disappointed not to hear it at the LA concert (though I can’t make this one anyway.) “Wayward Soldier” would also be an awesome addition. The “No Exit” revised prologue is worth doing too, maybe to open (and sneak-adding to the CD set!) Speaking of these pieces… can you play LA again and make sure to include them? :)

“Samson and Delilah” would be a beautiful addition. And it seems it would make Raya happy, so go for it. ;)

Another suggestion: “One Year Later”. I just love that little piece. Oh and I like “Pegasus”, as well. So if you would do it even better now, that’s just one more reason to include it. :)

“Wayward Soldier” would be great. I would also love to hear “Something Dark Is Coming.”

One of my picks would be “Violence and Variations” or “Passacaglia” or something like that.

Too bad I won’t be there … but I would love to hear those live.

Hey Bear I think The Dance would be good for a live concert since it’s so catchy and up-tempo. Also I really like Hero’s Return I believe it’s called the Bulldog theme from Season 3’s Hero.. I think that would be GREAT live on stage– powerful string and percussion parts and also pretty fast-paced, if a little dark. Don’t know if you’ve considered that one.

Also the Temple of Five theme I think would be good for say an interlude/intermission or brief intro piece know what I mean? And the Kara Destiny fast-paced electric violin version that plays during the Starbuck/Six fight scene in Kobol’s Last Gleaming.. I think that would be good too. And of course I agree The Hub would be great. Hope this helps and hope to find out what you think!

    Hi Bear,

I don’t know if this is the most appropriate blog entry to put this in but I just wanted to ask you for some advice as I am an aspiring composer and musician. I have immensely immensely enjoyed your music on BSG and respect your work ethic and talent and your detailed blog entries. I’m sure you’ve gotten a request like this more than a few times, but I waned to share some of the pieces I’ve started to compose with you to maybe get some of your feedback/advice.

I’ve only been composing for a few years now whenever I have the chance (I play piano mainly and I a learning violin and harmonica) I know you are terribly busy, but I was wondering if maybe sometime later in the summer or whenever else down the line you have a bit of free time you could take a minute to listen to my stuff. I compose using Finale Notepad and I can send the file as an attachment to you( perhaps you’re familiar with it (http://www.finalemusic.com/NotePad/Demo.aspx).

Anyway, if you also have any other general words of advice for an aspiring composer/musician, I would greatly appreciate it. I also noticed that I believe you have given other people feedback through the blog on some of their compositions that they have placed a link for- I can try to set up something like that and send you a link of my stuff if it’s more convenient for you. Anyone else’s feedback on this blog would also be appreciated of course.

Thank you in advance, Bear, and I hope to hear from you. Good luck with all your current projects. Sorry I can’t make it to any of your BSG concerts in San Diego as I am on the east coast in Miami. But I look forward to seeing the videos online and hearing the season 4 soundtrack.

    Best,

    Leif

I hate to whine, Bear, but I got my friend and her 16 year old son all pumped up to see your concert, and then saw that you do not allow people under 21 to attend…

That…sucks, for lack of a better word.

Please keep in mind people might want to take their kids when you plan other concerts. I get that you don’t want screaming babies, but … maybe an age limit of 12 and over?

grnidone… “and then saw that you do not allow people under 21 to attend… That…sucks, for lack of a better word.”

Guys and gals… I’ve already mentioned in this blog that I’m sorry the venue is 21+. I didn’t know when I booked the show.

This event is being put together in conjunction with House of Blues, Live Nation, SyFy Channel and Universal Cable Productions, all of which are gigantic mega-corporations, each with their own set of rules and restrictions. Trust me, I’m not the one keeping people under 21 out. My hands are completely tied here. If it were up to me, it would be all ages. I know and agree with you that it sucks, but please, no one think that the 21+ rule was somehow MY idea. :)

Jonny Boy… “As far as suggestions go, how about a sign that reads, “No clapping along with the music”? Is it weird that that bothers me?”

No way, man! Clapping along with the music is HIGHLY encouraged! So is singing and dancing and yell SO SAY WE ALL at the top of your lungs. :)

    Madjeepgirl…

Thanks for doing the research about the dinner reservations and VIP entrances. Those are useful pieces of info.

ISing4Cylons… “Yeah, Bear, totally let me sing Sampson and Delilah. I would really REALLY love to sing something in frakkin English.”

    Hmm… well, that’s a big vote from Raya. :)

Vinicius… “I’ve just heard “Refugees Return” and thought: How can this not be in the set list?! It’s so freaking beautiful! Jesus Christ! One of your finest pieces, Bear, marvellous!”

Thanks! That piece was always one of my favorites. In fact, I think it might actually be the best composition on the Season 3 record, although there are a couple on the upcoming Season 4 album that I think are even better.

Leif573… ” I was wondering if maybe sometime later in the summer or whenever else down the line you have a bit of free time you could take a minute to listen to my stuff.”

Sure, I can try to look at something, but I don’t have Finale Notepad. Can you upload somewhere an mp3 and/or pdf? I doubt I can look at anything before mid-August, because my schedule is frakkin’ crazy.

    -Bear

Bear- If Pegasus is bothering you that much, you should do it. Yeah. Go.

GungaDin… “Bear- If Pegasus is bothering you that much, you should do it. Yeah. Go.”

I must confess, I’m giving it second thoughts now that so many people have chimed in about it. :)

    -Bear

The one song you didn’t play at last year’s concert that I needed to hear was Prelude to War! Please play it for myself and my friends who are coming from NY for the second time! Oh…but maybe the instruments can be in tune before playing it?

    -Ian

Oh….and We will be there for the Saturday night show! Rock on brother! \m/

Sadly, I will be missing this far-off-ish event. That said, I can’t believe no one has requested “Someone To Trust.” It’s the only “mellow” piece that I enjoy more than “Roslin And Adama.” Also, I’d leave “A Distant Sadness” right where it is at the head of the setlist.

Even though I’m stuck way out on the wrong coast I think the following would work awesomely (is that even a word?):
    Kat’s sacrifice
    Resurrection Ship
    Colonial Anthem
    The Olympic Carrier
    Flesh and Bone

Oh, and I think Something Dark Is Coming and Battlestar Sonatica are musts!

Gads! I hope this concert gets recorded!

PS: I’d love to complete my collection of autographed BSG soundtracks at one of your concerts out here in Jersey (nudge, nudge)!

I’ve been lurking on this site for awhile, but since you asked for input and since I’m going to the Saturday concert (yay!), I figured I’d post.

From the ones you listed I would love to hear ‘Pegasus’, ‘The Dance’, ”Wayward Soldier’ (am I the only one who thinks it sounds like it could be from a superhero movie?), ‘Resurrection Hub’ and ‘A Promise to Return.’ Even though you didn’t mention it, others have, and I would like to join them in wanting to hear ‘Mandala in the Clouds.’ It is one of my favorite pieces, I constantly play it over and over on my iPod, and would love to hear it performed live. But then, we’d probably be happy if you came out on stage with your accordion and played E♭ over and over again.

Finally two things. 1) Do you know what the rules are for cameras at the concert? 2) Have you ever thought of doing something with the music from BSG similar to what Metallica did with the San Francisco Symphony? That would be EPIC!

    Bear McCreary…
“No way, man! Clapping along with the music is HIGHLY encouraged! So is singing and dancing and yell SO SAY WE ALL at the top of your lungs. :)”

    SO SAY WE ALL!

Raya, I hope you get your shot!

And count me as another vote for “Pegasus”.

Not that I could go, but you should do Violence and Variations.

My favourite BSG song (well, until s4 soundtrack comes out) that unfortunately was underplayed in the scene it was in. Like it was very quiet and very backgroundy. Oh well.

Thanks for your comment, Bear! I love “Refugees Return”, that crescendo (is that the term?) by 1:47 and the drums by 2:09 and 2:13 are so beautiful, good Lord!

I’d like to ask you a question: is that (awe-frakkin’-some!)string melody from “Mandala in the Clouds” (by 1:37) reused in any other song? I’d really like to hear it again, it’s magnificent! To hear this theme in the show would be really nice, it’s not even necessary to listen to the whole track, just this part would be un-frakkin’-real!

Oh, I also love “Gentle Execution”. I’m not saying it should be in the set list (it doesn’t fit really well actually), I’m just praising your work, Bear. Lovely song.

    Last notes:
    Elegy x Battlestar Sonatica ->
Battlestar Sonatica wins in my opinion.

Wayward Soldier x Refugees Return -> Refugees Return totally wins!

Mandala in the Clouds x Pegasus -> Mandala in the Clouds forever! So Say We All!

Violence and Variations x Passacaglia -> Hmm… Draw. They are both superb.

Have a nice time choosing, Bear, although we can predict which ones will be chosen.

Hi, one more question. I’m not sure if this has been answered already, but will the Season 4 CD be sold at the venue? I definitely would like to get one signed.

Bear, I’m so looking forward to the concert. I just about spent my last dollar on the tickets, but it’ll be worth it. It’ll be be even more worth it if you play Lords of Kobol, Scar, Baltar’s Dream and Heeding The Call, though. :) Those are my favorites. If I had to choose one, it would be Lords of Kobol. Such a brilliant, beautiful piece of work.

Bear, I first want to say I think your music is amazing. Using unothodox instruments to convey different themes is quite unique. Is there somewhere I can get a written copy of the score? I am an avid collector of sheet music and I think yours would be a great thing to have in my collection. See you on the Friday concert as I have purchased my VIP ticket.

I’m hoping to make it out there (coming from east coast) for one of your shows later this month.. *fingers crossed*

Would LOVE to hear Prelude to War, Fight Night, Wayward Soldier, and Pegasus. All the rest you suggest look great too, although I feel like Black Market fits the rest of the soundtrack only a little better than that episode fit the rest of the show. I can’t say I’m totally familiar with the names of the 4th season pieces, since I haven’t played that CD.

I’d like to hear Battle on the Asteroid. That’s always been one of my favorites. Bloodshed and Battlestar Operatica are also favorites. Both of those are nice and short, and could make nice transition pieces depending on the mood of the preceding/upcoming pieces. I wouldn’t worry about Operatica too much, because it gives you an opportunity to march out some soprano in a hot red dress. It’s also pretty light, as far as opera goes. The lyrics are hilarious for anyone whose read them (or knows italian).

I love Promise to Return and would never argue against playing it, but one thing that’s always bummed me a bit about it is that the soundtrack version of it seems to be missing some phrases that were played in the episode it first aired in…the starting low string passages played when Anders is retrieving the arrow from its hiding spot seem to be missing from the version on CD, which always bummed me because I felt they contained an excited optimism that was missing from the CD track.

Ian… “Please play it for myself and my friends who are coming from NY for the second time! Oh…but maybe the instruments can be in tune before playing it?”

Never. I refuse to play anything in tune. Ever. That’s my trademark sound. :)

stoodlemayer… “1) Do you know what the rules are for cameras at the concert? 2) Have you ever thought of doing something with the music from BSG similar to what Metallica did with the San Francisco Symphony? That would be EPIC!”

1). I have no idea, but considering that HOB is strict about everything else, I imagine they’re strict about this too. I’ll find out.

2). Have I thought about it? Of course!

Unpossible… “I’m not sure if this has been answered already, but will the Season 4 CD be sold at the venue? I definitely would like to get one signed.”

To the best of my knowledge, yes! It will be sold there!

wrench… “Is there somewhere I can get a written copy of the score? I am an avid collector of sheet music and I think yours would be a great thing to have in my collection.”

Not at the moment, but one day I hope to publish a book of orchestral scores.

    -Bear

First of all I want to say that the free concert at the CA Watercourt was spectacular, and I am looking forward to the House of Blues on the 25th. ‘Prelude to War’ is an absolute must keep – my favorite track! ‘Resurrection Hub’, ‘The Cult of Baltar’(the voacal pieces were truly memorable @ the CA Wc), and ‘Worthy of Survival’ would all be exceptional additions to the show.
Eagarly awaiting the concert video release! When will that be?

Passacaglia and The Shape of Things to Come would be amazing to hear at the San Diego shows.

BTW, Found out you’re going to be on Richard Hatch’s BSG Panel at Comic-Con. See you there !!!

‘Prelude to War’ blew the roof off of the house at the California Plaza! Of course, there was no roof, but still…A must play for the HOB concert.

‘Storming New Caprica’ would be amazing.

The music is friggin genius. It is a crime that you don’t have an Emmy.

All along the watchtower is a must ;) but I also really like a few from the first season. “The Shape of Things to Come” and “Passacaglia” are amazing pieces from the first season. Personally favourite is also “Scar” but thats mainly cause its my favourite episode and the piece is amazing to go along with the episode

My boyfriend and I are very excited to be going to the concert on the 25th. We’d both really love to hear ‘A Promise to Return’. He’s also a big fan of ‘Wayward Soldier’–another great one. ‘Pegasus’ would be interesting, but I think there are other songs we’d love to hear even more.

It might not be the best concert material since it’s another piano piece, but we also both love ‘Battlestar Sonatica’. I bought the signed sheet music and I’m trying to learn it on piano – it’s teaching me how to play piano again.

Just thought we’d pitch in our opinions. We can’t wait for that Saturday.

Forgot to mention on my first comment but another great song that should be done is also “Kat’s Sarcifice”. Hmm another one is “Prelude to War”, its one of my favourites from S2

    Sarah ;)

Ok, I’ve got time to do just a couple more charts before we start rehearsals… gettin’ down to the wire here.

Would you guys rather hear an oldie but goodie like Pegasus… or more Season 4 tracks, like Cult of Baltar?

    -Bear

By the way, I don’t mean to imply that it definitely one or the other, but I’m really running out of time to get all the songs done I want to. So I might have to make some informed creative sacrifices. The bigger question really is… do you want to hear mostly stuff you know really well from the Season 1, 2 and 3 albums, or are you also interested in newer material from Season 4 and Caprica?

    -Bear

Caprica? Hmm, doesn’t seem to fit tonally. Of course, neither does T:SCC, but “Samson and Delilah” still rocks.

Let me put it this way: I’m coming from the east coast and this will likely be the only BSG concert I’ll ever see. I’d prefer covering the entire series rather than making this mostly about the most recent material. If it’s primarily about season 4, then the focus is on the more mature compositions but at the expense of some prime examples of what made me pay attention to the music to begin with.

It may be stuff I “know really well” but it’s the only time I’ll ever hear it live. Does that help?

We forgot to mention that we’d love to see any rendition of the Opera House music, although if we had to see one, it would be “The Shape of Things to Come”. Those pieces of music are hands down our favorite TV pieces ever. Also, it would be amazing to see “Diaspora Oratorio”, as it’s the primary reason I’m excited about the Season 4 soundtrack, and hearing it live in person we be a hell of a treat. We can’t wait!

So long as Violence & Variations, Prelude To War, and All Along The Watchtower are part of the playlist, this husband who bought his wife VIP tickets for her birthday will be happy :)

I’m more on hearing stuff from the early seasons :D mix it up a bit, maybe half of the list from S1 & S2 and then the other from S3 & S4

    Sarah

    ~~~
    GungaDin… “And I’m sorry you don’t care for “Pegasus” that much, but I think it’s brilliant… I think it’d be interesting live.”
    I enjoy it for what it was at the time I wrote it. I just know I could do it better now. In fact, that’s half the reason I’m considering doing it live at the show. :)
    ~~~

    I say… go for it.

I say go for it as well on the occasional non-BSG composition, such as “Samson and Delilah” or anything else from T:TSCC. Or “Eureka.” Or “Rest Stop.” I guess what I’m saying is, while music from Battlestar should be the bulk of the set list, I don’t think anyone would object to the occasional composition written for a different show.

    - M. \”/

Tahna… “We forgot to mention that we’d love to see any rendition of the Opera House music, although if we had to see one, it would be “The Shape of Things to Come”.”

I know! Unfortunately, you really need a string ORCHESTRA to pull it off. I’ve only got room on the stage for a quartet, and the four strings alone are not enough to do justice to that track. :( So, there won’t be any SOTTC is this concert. But, we’ll more than make up for it!

Meowlin… “I don’t think anyone would object to the occasional composition written for a different show.”

Theoretically, I totally agree with you. I would LOVE to do some kick ass tunes from Rest Stop, Eureka, Terminator… hell, maybe even Dark Void! But, I think THIS set of concerts will focus on “Galactica.” If we can tour this thing next year, we’ll branch out.

    -Bear

I realize maybe it’s a bit late to chime in now, with the shows starting next week. But anyway, here is my set list suggestion.

Note: The season 4 pieces I’ve added to this set list are a bit uncertain, as I have yet to hear them isolated.

    —–

    - “Standing in the Mud,” then gradually building up to “Baltar’s Dream.” Main theme perhaps led by Cartwright on electric fiddle and Brendan McCreary on electric guitar, alternately. I think there’s plenty room for a couple of awesome solos here.

    - “Heeding the Call,” short interludial statement immediately after “Baltar’s Dream.”

    - “Baltar Speaks with Adama,” with an introductory statement of Gibbs’ Number Six Theme, and with slightly more powerful percussion near the end. This should be a nice ‘introduction’ to the musical language of BSG, I think.

    - “Kobol’s Last Gleaming,” replace the boy’s voice with Raya’s. The first minute in this piece is exceptional. Eventually let “Lords of Kobol” take over.

    - “Something Dark Is Coming,” compressed version. I believe the snares and the overall percussion in this piece make it possible to eventually alter it into “Prelude of War” in a pretty damn catchy way.

    - “Prelude to War,” maybe compensate the small violin section somewhere along the piece by doubling it with guitars (not sure, though).

    - “Roslin and Adama” and “Admiral and Commander.” Nuff said.

    - “The Dance.” Would be really cool if it works well with the available ensemble.

    - “Pegasus,” great contrast to “The Dance”. Eventually evolving into “Gina Escapes.”

    - “Gaeta’s Lament,” although I think maybe Juliani and his voice should be in this one.

    - “Wayward Soldier,” if string parts work well.

    - “Battlestar Sonatica” or “Elegy,” could be a very nice breather for the audience before beginning on the remaining kick-ass songs.

    - “The Cult of Baltar”

    - “Resurrection Hub”

    - “Heeding the Call” (Reprise)

    - “All Along the Watchtower” – Is a must, of course.

    - “Black Market” – Finishing off the evening!

To answer your earlier question (probably a bit late), I’d rather hear Cult of Baltar than Pegasus. And I will be there :) Is something like Diaspora Oratorio possible with the BSGO?

Still would like to hear something closer to the screen version of Promise to Return. I’m sure your quartet would enjoy it.

Wayward Soldier is AWESOME! That lilting violin motif is wonderful

The Temple of Five – would it work live – I’d hope so.

Mandala in the Clouds – once again awesome string stuff there. Growling and hungry!

    Gentle Execution – lovely.

Of course Roslin and Adama, Passacaglia, The Shape of Things To Come, All Along The Watchtower.

I live in Australia. Who knows if there are tickets – but I *SO* would love to fly over and see one of the concerts. I wonder if I could do it!?! OMG! HOW AMAZING!

ArildWT… “- “Standing in the Mud,” then gradually building up to “Baltar’s Dream.” ”

You’re the first person to ever mention “Standing in the Mud”. Oddly enough, we actually performed this at The Mint in 2006. I didn’t think it was a track anyone ever noticed. I don’t think we’re going to do it this year, but we could in the future for sure.

Tanru… “I live in Australia. Who knows if there are tickets – but I *SO* would love to fly over and see one of the concerts. I wonder if I could do it!?! OMG! HOW AMAZING!”

You should fly over and check it out!

    -Bear

    Hello Bear!

As I promised you earlier, I will be in San Diego to see you live at HOB next week ! Why can it be “interesting” for you? Because I will fly there from HUNGARY, only to enjoy your concerts. I have read on your site that you were astonished to have fans on your concert from all over the world (“During the signing, I met fans from all over the country who had flown or driven in to see this event, including a girl from NEW ZEALAND, who was here just to see us!”), so I hope, you’ will be glad to hear that there are some more fans of yours from all over the world, who could make this kind of trip too. Actually I will be in the VIP section for all the three nights, so we can meet personally. I’m really excited, and I’m crazily looking forward to these nights. I’m trying to send you an e-mail to the address you gave us for the website competition. I have some questions for you, so I hope you”ll find my e-mail there. Have a nice day, and please, answer my e-mail if possible!

Bear: “You’re the first person to ever mention “Standing in the Mud”. Oddly enough, we actually performed this at The Mint in 2006. I didn’t think it was a track anyone ever noticed.”

In a purely musical perspective, I think of “Standing in the Mud” as more of a companion piece to tracks like “Baltar’s Dream” rather than a completely independent one (that’s why I proposed a transition in my set list suggestion). The build-up in “the Mud” is executed brilliantly, but I feel that maybe it lacks a more characteristic or determined ending around 1:30. The gradual development of the track sort of beckons for a different ending, if you know what I mean.

    Arild…

Yes, “Standing in the Mud” feels very close to “Baltar’s Dream.” In fact, the piece was so aggressive and kick ass, that it overpowered the dialog in the scene I wrote it for, and it was subsequently deleted from the episode! I think the beginning section stayed in, but the actual groove doesn’t appear in that episode.

Ironically, Sci Fi Channel started running ads with that piece in the background and I think I used it somewhere else as well, so it never went to waste. And, of course, on the album, it sounds great!
