    6/13/09 CA Plaza Concert Highlights

Posted by Bear McCreary on June 15th, 2009

A big thanks to all the fans who turned up at the California Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles, last Saturday!  The evening was a complete success.  BrEndAn’s Band opened first, finishing their set with Brendan McCreary’s original song “When Will the Work Be Done,” that was featured in the “Battlestar Galactica” finale.  As the sun set, the Battlestar Galactica Orchestra took the stage…

For the last song, Kara Thrace herself, Katee Sackhoff, joined me on stage at the grand piano to play “Kara Remembers” (from the forthcoming Season 4 Soundtrack Album).  I played the left hand part, and she plucked out the Final Four Theme, just as she did in the climax of Someone to Watch Over Me.  Once we had the Final Four Theme going on the piano, the band snuck in, building to “Heeding the Call” and finally “All Along the Watchtower.”  The writers and director of Someone To Watch Over Me were in the audience, so this was a very special moment for Katee and me.

This is apparently what I look like when I’m conducting.

The lovely Raya Yarbrough joined us for “A Distant Sadness” and “Lords of Kobol.”

    Katee at the piano

Brendan McCreary performing “All Along the Watchtower.”

    Violin virtuouso Paul Cartwright

Woodwind specialist Chris Bleth brought his entire arsenal of bansuris, duduks, flutes and zurnas for the show.

Bassist Mike Valerio solos during “Dirty Hands.”

Cellist Tina Guo brought the rock.

Brendan McCreary in the opening act, BrEndAn’s Band. Nice jacket!

This concert was the world premiere performance of “Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1,” that will be featured on the forthcoming Season 4 Soundtrack Album.  As I told the audience that night, the compositions Slick plays during that episode were my sketches, composed on set during the filming.  Just as the character Slick searched for the soul of his music, so I toiled and searched, sketching various musical themes and motives.  At the end of the episode, Kara plays the recording of her father performing his “Sonata,” but we only hear about a minute of it.  The audience at California Plaza last Saturday became the first in the world to hear the complete “Sonata.”

Ira Ingber (L), whose  slide guitar has graced countless film scores including Midnight Run, played an intense solo during “Dirty Hands.”  Steve Bartek (R) has played on all my projects since the beginning and, of course, was the lead guitarist of Oingo Boingo for nearly 20 years.

Speaking of Boingo, drummer Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez held down the line of percussion in the back.

Taiko maestro M.B. Gordy in action.

Remember Nigel Tufnel’s solo in Spinal Tap, when he made THIS EXACT FACE?  Pretty awesome.

Brendan sang the lead vocal on “Gaeta’s Lament,” a unique arrangement of it I made specifically for the concert.

The front line of guitars, Paul in the background.

I’m playing a particularly brutal keyboard part in “Prelude to War.”

Steve Bartek solos on “Black Market.”

Percussionist Jonathan Ortega plays Nagado Daiko.

    Violinist Robbie Anderson

    Vatos

Richard Cook played with us for the first time, lending his Irish Whistles and Uilleann Pipes to “Wander My Friends.”

Percussionist Bruce Carver brought his entire array of gongs, visible behind him.

Violist Tom “Dirty Brahms” Lea makes his Metal Face.

(Thanks to PopCultureGeek for the pic!)

After the concert, the entire band and I signed Battlestar Galactica and Caprica CDs, as well as limited edition “Music of Battlestar Galactica” posters that are only available at our live events.  I’m hopeful that we’ll sell these online soon as well, so those of you who can’t make it out have a chance to get these two beautiful designs by artist Andrew Craig (who also took all these amazing photographs!).

During the signing, I met fans from all over the country who had flown or driven in to see this event, including a girl from NEW ZEALAND, who was here just to see us!

A thunderous performance beneath the stormy skies.

Even though the venue said it wasn’t allowed, many fans got video footage (thanks!) :)  Here’s the ENTIRE concert, courtesy of Erik at FilmsInFocus.  If you guys have more, post links either in the comments below or in this entry.

It looks like it was a night of musical awesomeness to remember. Thanks to whoever uploaded the vids for those of us in faraway lands.

Just as I was feeling a bit sad, seeing all this and not being a part of it, Amazon sent me a notice that “Caprica” shipped. I thought, “When did I order Caprica??” Well, went to my account, and I still can’t figure out when I preordered, but hey, can’t complain!

It’s like The Internet smiled on me and said “Here is some of Bear’s music. That will make you feel better.” – and really who am I to complain to Amazon? ;-)

Sounds like a great show. Again, I suggest that the Gorge at George would be an ideal venue for some BSG action!!

Congratulations on all of this-It makes me happy that Battlestar isn’t completely over!!!

Wish I could’ve been there, it looks like a blast just from the photos. Just throwing it out there, but there’s an entire east coast the United States that can be a pretty sweet performance destination. I’m particularly partial to Florida, myself. The videos are a pretty awesome consolation, though.

Jeez.. that was amazing.. i can’t WAIT to see you guys perform at the HOB! I watch those videos and i feel my blood begin to pump so fast through my heart that i get a euphoric rush!
    I CANT WAIT!!!!!

Hi, Bear! What an amazing show!!!

… I live Downtown, and a friend of mine is on the Board of Grand Performances, so I stumbled upon this performance and saw your name — I had to attend! … it was a fantastic score, a great performance and a fun evening all-around … thanks!

(FYI: I lived a floor above you in Marks Hall first year of USC — how far you’ve come! Congrats!)

Soooo awesome. Can’t wait come down to SD for the Saturday show. My girlfriend is pretty stoked, too. HOB is a fantastic venue.

Hey just puttin’ it out there: Do you need a shotgun/substitute didgeridoo player? Just in case? I happen to know one! :)

World Premier “Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1″

    Video at: http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

    Enjoy,
    Erik C. Andersen

Very awesome Bear! Cant wait for more videos to surface to quench my thirst.

Amazing, amazing, amazing! The “electric” version of “Prelude to War” was brilliant and so powerful. Good luck in SD.

I really, REALLY want the music to that Sonata. I dearly hope you release it.

This must have been… superawesome. What a fest.

And if I may make a suggestion for further playing locations: Berlin, Germany would be lovely.

Because I’m dying to see this…

Marleen: Well, Prague, Czech Republic would be better ;-) but Berlin would do. As anything in Europe. I hope Bear will eventually go to Europe. Maybe next year?

Amazing! Wish I lived in the US…

Europe does sound nice for a change, how about the International Film Festival in Ghent *hint* *hint*? I went to see Clint Mansell perform there last year (his first live performance ever); it could be you in the future!

    Hey Bear,
wow,Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1 is the best theme that you have ever composed!! Really it´s fantastic.
I´m sadly that i wasn´t there. But the USA is too far away from Germany. I hope you will come here again. The concert in Hagen was great.

wow. that was amazing. i love the way during “kara remembers”, “heeding the call”, and “all along the watchtower” at around the 2 minute mark you’re like crazy rocking out.

and the sonata…my gods that was beautiful.

you really really really need to play a show in the nyc area!

Those pictures and videos are wonderful. It must have been one fantastic concert and I really wish I could have seen it.

Berlin bTW would be okay but how about Vienna? :g: A concert in front of the Neptune fountain in Schönbrunn is hard to beat ;-)

The video’s and photo’s look great. Very nice place to hold a concert too.

Btw, I agree with Rian, a live concert at the International Film Festival in Gent, which focuses a lot on music, is definitly a good choice if you’d ever come to Europe.

Crazy shit… that just looks amazing. Hopefully one time in a place close to where I am… O_o

wish i were there. any chance these could be converted to mp3 so they could be dl’d and listened to that way? work doesn’t allow streaming video =(

Looks like it was an amazing concert. The ‘Dreilide Thrace’ piece sounds incredible, and is exactly what I was hoping for from that episode soundtrack-wise.

I must confess, the soundtrack is coming out sooner than expected if it really is coming next month. Either way, I’m excited for the release as well as the track list which I assume will be on here soon!

MUCH better pics than mine. ;) Thank you and the crew muchly for a tremendous evening, BM. No lie. TRE. MEN. DOUS.

p.s. You lived at Marks Hall?! HA. I lived at Trojan my freshman year. Used to roll out of bed at 2 a.m. in my PJ’s to do a radio slot at KSCR. Ah, youth…

    Bear,

The show was incredible! Two thumbs up, along with a big toe and a high five!

This was my first concert event that I attended of yours and I have to say that you guys really know how to put on a show. I’m also attending the Saturday concert at the HOB as well.

Hope you continue to do more “Music of BSG” concerts. Thanks for wonderful performance. You really deserve the Emmy.

plainsong… “Just as I was feeling a bit sad, seeing all this and not being a part of it, Amazon sent me a notice that “Caprica” shipped. I thought, “When did I order Caprica??” Well, went to my account, and I still can’t figure out when I preordered, but hey, can’t complain!”

    It was meant to be.

BeccaDoten… “(FYI: I lived a floor above you in Marks Hall first year of USC — how far you’ve come! Congrats!)”

I recognized your name immediately! Wow, what a small world. I’m so glad you enjoyed the show. Julie B has logged into the blog from time to time as well, so its a Marks Hall reunion over here! :) Hope all is well!

ieatglue528… “Hey just puttin’ it out there: Do you need a shotgun/substitute didgeridoo player? Just in case? I happen to know one! :)”

I’ll keep that in mind! :)

jangoisbaddest7… “I really, REALLY want the music to that Sonata. I dearly hope you release it.”

I will. Not sure how yet, but I will. Keep an eye out here on the blog for updates in the coming weeks.

    Marleen & Deus_cz…

Berlin or Prague would be amazing!

Woltersmedien… “wow,Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1 is the best theme that you have ever composed!! Really it´s fantastic.”

Thank you. And I must say I agree with you. I think it is one of the best pieces on the new album. It was over a year in the making, so I’m glad it turned out well. I’m also amazed I can actually play the damn thing. :)

Joelzor… “I must confess, the soundtrack is coming out sooner than expected if it really is coming next month.”

You’re telling me! :) I have hardly slept at all since that concert, because I’ve been listening to final mixes and mastering this album, getting it ready in time to sell at the shows next month.

    -Bear

By the way, I just added “Recent Comments” to the sidebar on the right. This might help you guys keep track of when I respond to comments, etc. If it helps, then cool… if not… well, there it is anyway.

    -Bear

Great show Saturday. I was very happy I could make it out. From my very comfortable vantage point up on the second level I could not tell that it was Katee that came out to play the piano with you.

Thanks for such a great post, Bear, all the pics and especially big thanks to Eric C. Andersen of FilmsInFocus for the videos!!!

What an awesome night that must have been, count me among the most jealous ones who posted comments about not being able to attend…. Come East young man! Come East!!!

    Eagerly awaiting Season Four soundtrack…

Next video posted is “Black Market”!

    http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

Bear you are a big hit in the Czech Republic, youtube’s top most viewed videos today!

    Erik C. Andersen

Thanks Erik! Much appreciated! I’d love to check out “Lords of Kobol” or “A Distant Sadness” next. :)

    -Bear

    Eric:

LOL, suppose it’s becouse of my post:
    http://www.bsg.cz/bear-mccreary-koncertoval-v-los-angeles-videa-fotky

    :)

Oh, sorry for that “c”, Erik. And thank you for the videos.

    Hey Bear!

I saw my name so I figured I should leave a note for once! I know this sounds really cliche, but I always knew you’d do great things! Congrats on everything.

I wish I still lived in SoCal, I would have been at the concert in a heartbeat. Looks like it was a great show, I especially love that picture of you conducting. It’s just so Bear! I like the artsy pic of you up on SciFi.com too. On behalf of all your NorCal fans, I request a concert up here!

    Julie B. :)

    PS Hi Becca!

Please, come and play on the East Coast and I will be there!

Wow wonderful play of my my all time battlestar music favorite “Prelude to war”. Thanks so much for the great vids!

Bear, by the way – do you have any more sheet music for “Prelude to war” to share? I found something in an old blog entry (http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=117 ) but it’s not covering much of it.

Hehe Bear, if you listen reeeeeeealllly carefully, you can hear my didgeridoo in “Downloaded” when Boomer’s having a conniption in her apt. So technically we’re both BSG composers! Yay! Although you have to listen REAAAAALY carefully to hear me. Like, you have to listen over the din of the guitarists caffeine-induced strumming fit, and then maybe find a way to filter out the drums and the bass guitar. But I’m there I swear.

geojulieta… “I saw my name so I figured I should leave a note for once!”

Hey Julie B!! So funny that you and Becca are both here on my blog. :) Just like the good ol’ days.

“I like the artsy pic of you up on SciFi.com too.”

Where was a picture of me up on SciFi.com? I never saw it. At least it was artsy. :)

Joaz… “Bear, by the way – do you have any more sheet music for “Prelude to war” to share?”

Not yet. I’m hoping to release more sheet music in some form in the near future. I think there’s real demand for the solo instrument and chamber ensemble pieces. As for “Prelude to War” and other big ensemble pieces, I’ve never ben sure how many people or groups out there would really be interested. But, it would seem that a few of you guys certainly are.

ieatglue528… “Hehe Bear, if you listen reeeeeeealllly carefully, you can hear my didgeridoo in “Downloaded” when Boomer’s having a conniption in her apt.”

Were you playing didgeridoo on that track playing in Boomer’s room?

    -Bear

For sure it’s me! When Six feigns getting cut during Boomer’s fit in her apt and there is hyperactive cacophony in the background? That was actually when I first started watching the show. Instant fan. Been a total devotee ever since. I’d gift you a didge at the Saturday show at HOB if I thought I could get it by security! hehe :)

The didge I used for that recording was made out of gourd instead of eucalyptus so it’s a pain to play (varnished mouthpiece instead of beeswax, tough to get a seal), but it can drown out jets taking off. People get a kick out of it when I play it directly into fireplaces or even, no kidding, bathtubs. It’s just. so. loud.

    But yep, that’s me!

    -Anthony

    Next videos are…

“Roslin and Adama” and Brendan’s great song “When Will The Work Be Done”

    http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

Bear, I will upload “A Distant Sadness” and “Lords of Kobol” next!

Thank you Deus_cz for posting the videos on your great website!

    Erik C. Andersen

Thanks Erik, these videos are in excellent quality. :O

Bear… “As for “Prelude to War” and other big ensemble pieces, I’ve never ben sure how many people or groups out there would really be interested. But, it would seem that a few of you guys certainly are.”

I must confess, I don’t think a lot of people will be buying this, but I certainly would. Not that I would be able to really do anything with it except reading along with it while listening to the song. But hey, that’s a lot of fun too.

    Hi there!

What a great concert! I love it. And kudos to Erik for those excellent videos!

And speaking of videos: I don’t think it came up back when, but there’s video footage available from the “Three Faces” ballet premiere at the Theater Hagen; check it out:

    http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_bitches/39252.html

I just stumbled upon that by accident and thought I’d better let you know. :)

    Stephan

I also look forward to Brendan’s upcoming Learn to Play Guitar While doing Aerobic Jumping DVD! ;)

Seriously, he must have lost 10 pounds in water during that concert!

Wow, thanks Erik for these great vids. They allow me to only get a taste of the awesomeness I missed.
Man Bear, you guys were frakkin’ rockin’.

    BEAR!! BEAR, BEAR!!!!!!!!!!

PLEASE tell me that the Lords of Kobol allowed you to film this and release it on Blu-Ray/DVD for the rest of your fans!!! This looked soooooo amazing!!! I envy everyone who’s had the pleasure of being there.

I’d love to have the concert on Blu-Ray with 7.1 surround sound, TruHD sound and your awe inspiring music in all its glory!

Bear, my man, you’ve got the wow factor!

If there’s a series of music that I want earth to be recognizes for by the aliens out there who might be listening in on us in the distant future… let the radio waves carry the human journey you’ve captures so perfectly in the music you’ve created for Battlestar Galactica… You really gave the story something so incredible and for that, I thank you…

Wow, now I really wish I had been there! It sounds (and looks, if the excellent recordings are any indication (thanks Erik!)) like it was amazing!

I have just one burning question about the soundtrack: Is the piano piece from the opening of “Someone to Watch Over Me” (a version of the Sonata, I guess) included? It’s the one piece of the Sonata that really stuck with me – it definitely fits the “happy and sad” requirement.

I may just rip it from the episode (yay for surround sound!). I don’t think I have the ability to wait for another month.

This was by far the best concert I’ve ever been to. Everything else pales in comparison! The Set List was PERFECT.

If I weren’t going to be out of the country during the HOB concerts, I would pay for all three! I’m totally serious!

I immediately went home after the concert and started writing some music until the wee hours of the morning. It’s not even FOR anything. I just felt this urge!

this looks (and sounds) amazing! wish i lived in the US sometimes, just so i could go catch one of your concerts. it’s be really amazing if you ever decided to concert in eastern europe as well. :)

and, erm… this is slightly off topic, but i thought i’d ask anyways: have you ever considered adapting the “battlestar” score into an opera? personally i love opera, and if “battlestar” were to be something other than a tv show, i always thought i’d make a great opera. there’s a track on the season one soundtrack (“battlestar operatica”) that is absolutely gorgeous (and hilarious too, lyrics-wise), and, well, i just thought i’d ask. :)

thank you for sharing the videos with us.

    best, annie

    Hey Bear,

You’ve probably been asked a hundred times, but are you planning on doing any other tours out of the south? L.A. is just a tiny bit too far being up in NorCal. As an aspiring pianist myself, I look up to your work as a reminder of what great minds can do with such great music. I also look forward to hearing and listening to the music you did with Caprica.

Hope you have the best of times, you deserve it.

    –Dave

I wanted to be there so much Bear. I live in the Orange County area and would normally have no problem seeing the show, but that same night, at 7pm no less, I graduated from UC Irvine with a drama degree. Literally, if it were any other time, I would have totally been there. Especially after hearing that you and Katee did Someone to Watch Over Me together. I’m just about to buy tickets for myself and my girlfriend for the showing at the HOB on Saturday the 25th. I’d love a chance to meet you if there’s a chance!

    Gief European concerts, plx.

    :p

(Love the concert arrangment for Prelude, btw).

exquisiteagony: There’s a reason why the genre is called “Space opera” ;)

    Very nice indeed!

Byteway what im hearing by these videos, Prelude to war screams slightly more distorted guitars. I know that the sound is not same as live-mix, but the whole thing might be stronger, after all guitars are quite a strong role in this version of the song.

Thanks so much for all the videos!

And WOW at the video of the ballet…. I had been waiting for a couple months now for someone to post videos of that, and it looks absolutely breathtaking!!

I noticed there were (at least judging from the recording) some balance issues with the strings in some of the bigger numbers, including Prelude to War… couldn’t hear them as much as I would have liked! And I am imagining getting intonation right with them to match the electric guitars is hard (and the fact being outdoors wreaks havok on string instruments). But I’m gonna chalk that up to being a recording :)

LOVE the way you did All Along the Watchtower.

Erik, I realize this basically means you’re putting like the whole concert on there, but I’d be very curious to hear what Gaeta’s Lament sounds like live.

    llent news.

Also, I forgot to tell you how awesome your performance of this piece was. Very musical, technically flawless. Well done! I’m beginning to appreciate what an awesome pianist you are. I just started up again recently after a several year break from it, so I suppose I’m in a decent position to judge. ;)

By the way, the first piece I learned when I started again was your Sonatica. Now I’m working on a Chopin Scherzo, but that Sonatica will be the piece that I can just whip out and play whenever, because it’s easy yet fantastic. Can’t wait to add this great piece to my repertoire!

Musicpaladin- Dude. Gaeta’s Lament was awesome. I know it’s blaspheme to say that I liked Brendan’s more than Alessandro, but I was like… It was so frakking good. Amazing, even. I want that version (the concert version) more than I want the album version.

Bear, what I’ll mention will be off topic. I just bought the Caprica CD. I can see that this soundtrack is very different from the BSG music. At first, it took me a little while to get used to. Then, I started to enjoy it! I love the smoothness of this music. Listening to it made me feel well rested. The Graystone and Tauron themes sound delightful.

For now, I understand that it starts off slow but I can imagine hearing how things will pickup in future releases.

Now, if only there was a way to get an early release of BSG season 4 double soundtrack!

Bear, you are the most rock n’ roll composer working today. You need to set up mosh pits at your gigs *smiles devilishly*

And much props to pulling off “Prelude to War”. Best action cue of the 21st century, man.

    Stephan…

Thanks for the link to the Three Faces video footage. I had no idea it had leaked out there into Internet Land. What a blast to see it again!

Delta… “I have just one burning question about the soundtrack: Is the piano piece from the opening of “Someone to Watch Over Me” (a version of the Sonata, I guess) included? ”

This question will be answered in a blog entry I will be posting in the next 48 hours. Hang tight… but, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. :)

tmcarlee… “I immediately went home after the concert and started writing some music until the wee hours of the morning. It’s not even FOR anything. I just felt this urge!”

Wow! Glad to be of some inspiration.

exquisiteagaony… “have you ever considered adapting the “battlestar” score into an opera?”

Actually, yeah, I have. I mean… we already did a ballet, so why not? I don’t have any immediate plans though.

Dave2718… “You’ve probably been asked a hundred times, but are you planning on doing any other tours out of the south?”

Yes, but nothing is on the books right now.

Jussi.K… “I know that the sound is not same as live-mix, but the whole thing might be stronger, after all guitars are quite a strong role in this version of the song.”

Thanks for the feedback, but rest assured that you’re not hearing anything like what it actually sounded like. That audio was from a camera microphone in the balcony, recording it off of speakers across a lake. It’s a miracle you can hear anything at all. :)

jangoisbaddest7… “I’m beginning to appreciate what an awesome pianist you are. ”

Well, I don’t consider myself an awesome pianist, but thank you. The Sonata really pushed my limits though.

GungaDin… “Gaeta’s Lament was awesome. I know it’s blaspheme to say that I liked Brendan’s more than Alessandro, but I was like… It was so frakking good. Amazing, even. I want that version (the concert version) more than I want the album version.”

It’s not blaspheme. But, you might want to wait before you declare your favorite. In fact, until now, the only version you guys have heard is the one AJ sang on the air, and now the live concert version I did. HOWEVER… there is yet a third version that you have not yet heard yet… hmmmm… >:)

bignosebob… ” You need to set up mosh pits at your gigs *smiles devilishly*”

    Hell yes!

“And much props to pulling off “Prelude to War”. Best action cue of the 21st century, man.”

Well, I don’t know about that, but thank you. And, to be honest, there’s an action cue on the Season 4 CD that just might top it. :)

    -Bear

    In May i posted this

    “Hey Bear,

As you have finished a good part of track selection now i think i have a very interesting suggestion
(you could also call it a big plea/request but it’s well thought out – it would mean additional advertisement for the BSG album and great fan service)

If we get a late summer/early fall soundtrack release that would mean another five months wait for the album.
We as your fans can of course listen to the music in the actual episodes over and over again (though sometimes buried in sound effects), but what if you would release one or maybe even two finished tracks on your blog/website. They would be just listenable in a satisfying quality and they would amp the excitement for this great release once again.

And now the big part: Let the fans decide from a list of 4-5 tracks you could live with getting released prior to the album which complete track would be put online on your blog through a poll or something similar.

You could do this for example in about a month and/or in the summer again. You wouldnt loose anything. The people here will buy the album regardless if you preview something or not, but in the best case you can reach some new people and in every case it would be a nice fan service.

I beg you just think about it, it’s a win win situation :)
(and i’m sure as it will be a 2 disc release that one or two tracks prior can’t be such a rights-problem with the label/studio)

    All the best,”

Well, i admit you have given us a great preview of the season 4 album with one of your best compositions: “Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1″
Will it be orchestra or just piano in the album?

As i’m from Europe i couldnt attend your concert but did listen to parts of it on youtube…
    It was fracking great!

Still i’m not giving up ;) What do you think of the idea to let us choose at least one final mix preview track out of a selection done by you?

It would be a good way to help us get over with the remainig time till the album realease.

    Alll the best

“HOWEVER… there is yet a third version that you have not yet heard yet… hmmmm… >:)”

I’m starting this rumor: Bear sings Gaeta’s Lament.

    Awesome sauce.

Personally, I hope that blog entry you post in the next 48 mentions “The Hub” being included on the Season 4 disc. Besides “Someone to Trust” that’s one of my favorite cues of the entire series.

Fedragal, you realize that the album will be released on July 21? It’s just a bit over a month now. (I can’t frakkin’ wait either, though :)

Bear, congrats to the wonderful performance! The videos are amazing and I can only guess what a blast it must’ve been to see this show live. The location looks quite beautiful, as well.

By the way, Erik managed to upload “A Distant Sadness” and “Lords of Kobol” to youtube already. Brilliant renditions of the songs by Raya. Her voice sounds even more amazing in concert. Hope one day she’ll release some of her own songs this way.

Here are the links and thanks a bunch to Erik for uploading these. You’re my personal hero! :)

    A Distant Sadness:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3emMqiwHQc

    Lords of Kobol:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zAovmC6i2w

Wow, this live version of “Lords of Kobol” is simply amazing. It’s one of my favourite songs since I first heard it in Pegasus.

DUUUUUUUUUUUDEEEE!!! It’s awesome, wonderful, unique. I wish I’d been there…

There is an ancestor’s saying in Turkey that: “Müzik ruhun gıdasıdır.” means: “Music is the food of spirit.” And you’re really know how to feed spirits.

Actually when I’ve found your blog, I became as happy as I’ve found my older brother who I’ve never seen for years – allegorically (maybe in the BSG universe :).

In your works, you’re using some eastern instruments and those are gives your music a very brilliant ethnic uniqueness. I think you totally should come over to Istanbul-Turkey, and discover our heavenly musical mixtures within the Middle-east and Europe. If you want to get any pre-opinions about here, you can look at some of the The Tea Party’s video clips and songs like “the Bazaar” or “Temptation”. And of course, you can ask to your friend Shirley Manson about Istanbul, after watch her “Run Baby Run” video clip ;) I want to tell more about our musical culture, but not to bore you anymore, a last tip for now: In Joe Satriani’s last album (Professor Satcha..), there are two songs named Asik Veysel and Andalusia which are dedicated to Asik Veysel. Asik(minstrel) Veysel was a Turkish folk bard lived in 20th century, who’s life story and philosophy gave inspirations to Joe the great :)

Also you can give a concert here to your followers many like me :) We’ll be very pleased, if you can arrange an event with your splendid orchestra in here. By the way, tell our respects to them from Turkey :)

    Cheers.

“This question will be answered in a blog entry I will be posting in the next 48 hours. Hang tight… but, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. :)”

Excellent! Of course, the anticipation is that much greater now…

My copy of the Caprica soundtrack arrived today, and from what I’ve listened to so far it’s amazing. Great work, as usual!

Fedragal… “What do you think of the idea to let us choose at least one final mix preview track out of a selection done by you?”

The only problem with your idea is that if I put up a few tracks and you guys pick which one is released… then some people will be disappointed when the others DON’T get released. :) I think the videos of our concert are enough for you to cling to for just another few weeks. :)

    thestationarytraveller…

“Also you can give a concert here to your followers many like me :)”

I would love to come to the Middle East with the band, that would be so much fun!

    -Bear

Enjoying the Caprica soundtrack while I compress the next concert video! What song will it be?

    Erik
    http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

It’s not blaspheme. But, you might want to wait before you declare your favorite. In fact, until now, the only version you guys have heard is the one AJ sang on the air, and now the live concert version I did. HOWEVER… there is yet a third version that you have not yet heard yet… hmmmm… >:)

Allow me to go out on a limb here and guess you’ve got that third version planned for…Caprica perhaps?
All this footage Erik is providing is absolutely wonderful! God, I wish I could have been there….

Hey Erik, this is Andrew, the photographer running around on stage and the artist who did the posters. I have a very odd request for you. My mom would love it if once you finish uploading all the music, you could also get Bear’s special thanks up there too.

Thanks for shooting the video. Its great getting to see it from a different perspective.

    Hi Bear,

I managed to take a bunch of stereoscopic 3-D photos of the concert, from Brendan’s opening set through to the encore. You can check them out at my blog http://www.retinalrivalry.com or see the flickr set at http://tinyurl.com/Bear3-D

They are posted both as parallel stereo pairs, and as red/cyan anaglyphs.

And in case you were wondering what you look like when you’re conducting in 3-D, check out the image at http://tinyurl.com/Bear3-Djump

    Thanks for a great concert!

    Eric
(not to be confused with Erik, who actually lives three doors away from me)

Macker, he’s probably talking about the arrangement that he recorded for the Season 4 album, which will in all likelihood be different than the aired version (which was sung by a sickly man who had just gotten his leg cut off!), and as Bear has stated also different from the arrangement they did at the concert.

Looks like it was a good time and what a great venue. Bear, I’m not sure if someone has asked this already but I was wondering if the piano piece from the intro to “someone to watch over me”, you know the “bored Kara Thrace” sequence, will be making an appearance in a concert or CD. It’s a short but piece but so very good… Can’t wait to hear the full sonata on CD. And Thank you ERIK for taking the time to handle the videos!

While not exactly anaglyphs, due to the lighting, the photos of Tina Guo and M.B. Gordy look pretty frakkin’ amazing viewed through (blue/red system) 3D glasses.

“there’s an entire east coast the United States that can be a pretty sweet performance destination.”

There’s a more central location under a 630-foot stainless steel inverse catenary that would be a pretty tasty location too, if the weather cooperates.

“I know it’s blaspheme to say that I liked Brendan’s more than Alessandro,”

While it’s approprate that Alessandro’s performance is on the soundtrack CD, my guess is that the schedule of his primary career – acting – precludes his performance at all (or possibly any) live concerts.

*“HOWEVER… there is yet a third version that you have not yet heard yet… hmmmm… >:)”

I’m starting this rumor: Bear sings Gaeta’s Lament.*

    Or “ISing4Cylons” …

    - M. \”/

Thanks for sharing the videos, I loved all of it! Must have been amazing to experience live. Are there any high resulution photos available?

(Paul Cartwright owns this version of Watchtower. Wow!)

So, Erik, or anyone, can you set the entire concert, or the clips, to be DL’d, kinda like a bootleg, for those of us who are not able to stream the clips? please please please?!
    with Bears permission of course…

Hi all, I was there at the concert on Saturday. Amazing and beautiful there at Grand Performances with the fountain in the background and the still water in the foreground. I had gone to the Roxy to see the show last year and LOVED it, so it was interesting to hear the band outside instead of in a small club. I tried to get video, but I only had a little camera…certainly not the setup that Erik had from filmsinfocus and the security lady behind me was watching like a hawk. I did however get one complete song. Erik hasn’t posted it yet, but when he does mine will pale in comparison.

Here it is until better comes along (sorry for the shaky camera)…

    Janna

    Meowin-

Although that is likely true, James Callis DID make an appearance at his Roxy concerts last year if I recall. I would also point out Kaytee Sakhoff except hers was more of a cameo kind of deal.

I know this has been discussed before, but one of these days I hope a DVD of live performances is released.

If not, then Bear and the Best Frakkin’ Band in the Colonies (So say we all!) are legally and ethically obligated to bring this musical goodness worldwide. ;)

Wow, Gaeta’s Lament! You will love this!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oNPsp9Vk48

P.S. Janna please post your videos. It’s always good to see new angles.

Thank so you much for allowing the videos to be posted to youtube!!!

Erik, you are right, I love it! Bear, greetings from Serbia. Battlestar fans from Serbia love your music.

    Next up “Precipice”!

    Erik C. Andersen

    Erik-
Unfortunately the video I posted was the only full song I got… the others I have are clips and not really anything that I feel is good enough to be posted because in truth I wasn’t at much of a different angle than you were. Every time I tried the security behind me would walk over and I would turn it off.

    I only took a few photos…
This one before the sun went completely down.

Hey Erik, I can’t find the Precipice video or Caprica. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks, man!

    -Bear

Haha, Bear, watchin’ the vids on Youtube (Didn’t get to go, sadness) and your music was outstandingly fantastic! Rounds and rounds of applause to you, sir! Now if you’ll excuse me, going to pop on Battlestar Sonatica.

I hear central Texas is lovely during the fall.

Okay so after lurking for practically forever, I finally had to register and say something. Which is thank you thank you thank you Bear for encouraging people to share video and such from the concert and Erik and everybody else for sharing.

I’m on some very crappy dialup internet atm and so loading stuff on youtube takes all day, but it was very much worth it to hear stuff like Prelude to War that’s been transformed into yet another level of pure badass awesome that I did not know existed before. Since I know it probably sounds even more amazing live it’s now my mission to go to one these concerts.

Hopefully there will be more of them next year? I’m moving out to Seattle next weekend-ish and will be “poor recent college grad” probably for the rest of this year, so too bad I won’t be able to make any of the upcoming events. I have to save up for when I can afford to travel again, and then bring everybody I know with me lol.

I listen to your music a lot while writing and just a lot in general and find it very inspiring. I can’t wait for the S4 soundtrack, it’ll probably be just the thing to cure some recent bouts of writer’s block.

    Thank you for spoiling us.

    -SVR

    kiddo235-

In the first picture, Im sitting on the edge of the stage changing my camera settings looking intensely like a fat guy. Thanks for capturing such a proud moment in my budding career. Everything else looks great though!

Bear, here is Erik’s video of Precipice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMgIc8qiE_o .
It can be found also on his site, third video from the top at http://www.filmsinfocus.com/BSG.htm .
I can’t find Caprica either, perhaps his site wasn’t updated yet.

    AndrewCraig-
If it’s any consolation I took video when I got everyone to sign my poster and I hate my voice and horrible laugh so much that I refuse to post it for all to watch/hear.

Hope Erik doesn’t mind – his latest videos can be found here:

    Gaeta’s Lament:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oNPsp9Vk48

    Precipice:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMgIc8qiE_o

Both performances are simply amazing. I’m especially thrilled by “Precipice”. I didn’t expect it to rock THAT much.

Thanks again Erik! If you’re really going to upload the entire show everybody around here owes you one (or probably more ;).

    Hi Bear!

Thank you for posting all these great photos – they really capture the energy of the evening. :) Which, by the way, was just absolutely brilliant.

I’ve posted my review of it here:

    See you in San Diego!
    Louise

Hey Erik, I can’t find the Precipice video or Caprica. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks, man!

    -Bear

I see you found Precipice. Today I am uploading Fight Night, Gina Escapes, and Caprica. Look for them soon at http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

How is the mix going on BSG 4?

    Erik C. Andersen

ejkdreamer: “I managed to take a bunch of stereoscopic 3-D photos of the concert …They are posted both as parallel stereo pairs, and as red/cyan anaglyphs.”

ANAGLYPHS!?! How did I miss this yesterday? I LOVE anaglyphs! You rock, ejkd!

@ musicpaladin2007 – Yeah, that was kind of my point. While Galactica Cast members may (possibly in some cases can be expected to) participate in Bear’s concerts as their schedules permit, this is not going to be all of the time. Now that they have Galactica as a credit on their resumés, most of them are going to be even more in demand as actors. Which is as it should be.

    Erik
    http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

Hey there Bear! That is an awesome AWESOME show you put up! I’m really glad it all came out nicely for everyone involved! Kudos to you Erik for your vids!

Just got a few things for ya:

    1) I know you’re getting plagued with questions bout future tours and locations, but maybe some love for the Eastern side? Since you’re doing a concert at HOB in San Diego and we have one here in Orlando, I guess it would be easy since you already got a connection with the company…haha.

    2) When you played “Gina’s Escape”, you did an extended version of it with what you had or was it a compilation of ideas you had afterwards?

    3) “When Will the Work Be Done” is an infectious and great song! When you said it was a song by Brendan in your original “Daybreak” blog entry, I thought you meant it was a song that he already did, but when I saw the video with the full song, I heard a lot of references to Caprica and to the character’s long journey. In a nutshell: How did you create the song with your brother? Any thought of it possibly going into a future CD release, either on your part or through his band?

Oh – and when you answered before in a very hinted way concerning whether or not we’ll hear the Adama Theme in Caprica, I was pretty vigilant for it and when it did…wow. My eyes just watered with how subtle that piece came in, to hear that piece one more time. Brilliant placement and a nice nod/foreshadowing to the future Admiral of the Human race. I’m really looking forward to what you’ll do with it in Caprica and seeing the evolution of the music, just as it was on BSG. =)

Hey Bear! First time poster, and it took me going to the concert and getting my proverbial socks knocked off to finally get a username. I got a chance to meet you and the band (I was the one with the potentially pretentious two-name thing at the signing table), but I wanted to follow up and just say… damn. Thank you, so much, for being one of a select few in television who put out incredible music, stuff that transcends “TV” and just sounds beautiful on its own. For a student like me who wants to break into TV, and has always been surrounded by music his entire life, it’s great to have something I can inspire to in my future shows, where I can say, “Yo, this is what I want our soundtrack’s quality to be (pulls out Battlestar CD)”. Thank you. I did have a question for you, after listening to all your CDs and now having compared it to the live version… what do you prefer, studio or live? I know both are incredibly different experiences, but do you have a preference?Oh. And if you could apologize to Chris Bleth for me, um… I complimented him on his “guitar licks” before my brain started working and I realized I had mixed him up with Steve Bartek for a moment. Yes. I was “that” guy.~J. Scott

Who are the final three? Just uploaded Baltar’s Dream!

    http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

    Erik

Whoa, this is comment #100! I’m glad you guys dug the concert! :)

    -Bear

    Shoot I was comment #99.

    Erik :)

Wow, that concert must have been a blat. Wait… thanks to Erik, I KNOW it was a blast. Thanks a bunch Erik for sharing your vids! That’s so cool! Awesome quality.

Bear, this was a terrific concert and I wished I would have had the chance to see it live! You totally rock and now that I’ve seen the footage, I can’t wait any minute longer for the S4 CD!!!

    All my best
    Dee

Exactly one week after it began, Erik has gotten the entire set uploaded. Good job man.

    Next up Dirty Hands!

    http://www.filmsinfocus.com/films.htm

    Erik

It’s amazing how long it takes to color correct, compress, and upload 16 songs! To everyone on the blog, thank you for all your nice comments. It kept me going those late nights.

Bear, you are a true talent and I’m glad I could help you share your live music with your fans! I wanted to end my journey posting these videos with “Wander My Friends”. It was an amazing live performance and really captures how magical your music is live!

BSG would not have been as great a show if it weren’t for you and the talent around you. You took us on a musical journey from the first cue to the last!

I look forward to S4 CD hopefuly, with your signature on it.

Just one fan who loves film score music,

    Erik C. Andersen

Erik, thanks for your videos. They mean a lot to us who are too far away to attend BSG concerts in person.

    Btw, Tina Guo is hot

You shouldn’t have hidden her behind Paul Cartwright :)

Thank you so much for linking all of these videos!

    Adster…

    Great pictures, thanks!

    EJKDreamer…

3-D? Awesome! I’d love to be able to get copies of all of these.

    kiddo235…

Great pic of you and Esai. I didn’t even know he made it to the show, but there he was!

SVRaven… ” I’m moving out to Seattle next weekend-ish and will be “poor recent college grad” probably for the rest of this year, so too bad I won’t be able to make any of the upcoming events.”

I grew up near there. Just lovely, especially in July and August. I certainly hope we can get up to the Pacific NW with the band sometime, but nothing’s on the calendar just yet.

t3techcom18… “2). When you played “Gina’s Escape”, you did an extended version of it with what you had or was it a compilation of ideas you had afterwards?”

Almost all of the songs were extended somehow, especially “Gina’s Escape,” “Dirty Hands,” and “Baltar’s Dream.” Typically, I’d have the soloist who played in the actual cue state the melody, then open up the form for some solos from the band, then re-state the melody one final time. So, cues on the album that were 2 minutes might be 4 or 5 now. It also really lets you have time to sit with the groove and feel it. Many of those pieces were painfully short on the album anyway. But, longer pieces like “Prelude to War,” (or last year we did “Something Dark is Coming”) are generally the same length in concert.

“3) “When Will the Work Be Done” is an infectious and great song! When you said it was a song by Brendan in your original “Daybreak” blog entry, I thought you meant it was a song that he already did, but when I saw the video with the full song, I heard a lot of references to Caprica and to the character’s long journey. In a nutshell: How did you create the song with your brother? Any thought of it possibly going into a future CD release, either on your part or through his band?”

Brendan entirely wrote it on his own. You should find him on MySpace and ask him directly, because its a great story and I wouldn’t really do it justice.

js1182… “I did have a question for you, after listening to all your CDs and now having compared it to the live version… what do you prefer, studio or live?”

It’s very hard to say. I’m a perfectionist, and will probably always prefer the studio versions. But, the energy and chaos of the live versions are a real visceral thrill, for sure.

    Erik…

You deserve and extra special thanks, man! The footage looks awesome. Thank you for sharing it with all of us!

    -Bear

One thing I really want to hear in concert is “Baltar Panics”, from season 1. It’s so short but I love it! Anyone else with me?

It was a great night. When I told my friends that it was Katee playing they doubted me. Foolish humans! Keeping my fingers crossed for an Emmy nom and win. You deserve it!

You know, it just hit me… no Eric Rigler for this concert?

This is very cool! Click on the Battlestar Galactica link below. Then select “Play All Videos”. Sit back and enjoy all 16 videos. It’s like being there live again!

    Erik C. Andersen

Erik, did you happen to get any more of BrEndAn’s Band?

Wow what a show! I wish I could have been there (were it not for my internship I would seriously have driven from Texas for it). Thanks so much to Erik for video-taping this for all of us to see. I love the arrangements of some of the songs (Prelude to War – Guitar Style!), and Gaeta’s Lament sends chills down my spine. Makes me more anxious then ever for the season 4 CD.

I’m really excited you are planning a CD of this music – it deserves to be heard in its full glory! I’ll buy the CD, DVD and if you ever come anywhere in Texas (Dallas perhaps?) I will be there! I’ll buy the posters if you get them online as well, they can join my assorted collection of Galactica ones already cluttering my wall!

Cory… “One thing I really want to hear in concert is “Baltar Panics”, from season 1. It’s so short but I love it! Anyone else with me?”

Wow, I had completely forgotten about that track! It would actually work very well. It just never struck me as a track that anyone really loved, you know? I’ll think about it, since I’m looking for other tracks we could perform live.

musicpaladin2007… “You know, it just hit me… no Eric Rigler for this concert?”

Regrettably, no. He was on tour with the Young Dubliners (check them out if you get a chance, amazing!). So, Richard Cook filled in for him. But, Rigler is back with us in San Diego.

    -Bear

Erik, did you happen to get any more of BrEndAn’s Band?

Yes, I did Cory. I got the hole thing on video! I tried to contact him but no response.

    Erik :)

Bear, if you’re looking for a good live track, I think “Destiny” from season one would be really kick ass…

GungaDin… “Bear, if you’re looking for a good live track, I think “Destiny” from season one would be really kick ass…”

That’s not a bad idea. I hadn’t really considered it. Someone else mentioned “Baltar Panics” from Season 1 as well. I hadn’t really thought about Season 1 tracks for the concert, but there are definitely a few possibilities.

    -Bear

[...] – actually you should – watch almost the entire concert and view lots of great pictures here at McCreary’s [...]

Katee is amazing *sigh* its really cool how she got up there with you and played “Kara Remembers”. Just amazing and so would have loved to be there for it, see her play it live with you. Anyways, the video will have to do and it does do wonders. Really adore her, so was amazed when I saw the video

    Sarah ;)

Talkative Sarah… “Katee is amazing *sigh* its really cool how she got up there with you and played “Kara Remembers”. Just amazing and so would have loved to be there for it, see her play it live with you.”

It was amazing for me too, because the last time Katee and I sat at a piano together, we were on the set with cameras around us, shooting the episode. And before you know it, we’re on stage in front of thousands of fans, re-creating that very scene! It was quite powerful…

    -Bear

“And before you know it, we’re on stage in front of thousands of fans, re-creating that very scene! It was quite powerful…”

I can imagine how powerful that must have been. Too bad I wasn’t there because that would have been amazing. Really hope its not a once in a life time thing cause I would LOVE to see Katee perform that live with you. So hope you get the chance to do that again with Katee

    Sarah :D
