BG Season 4 CD Track List and Cover Art!

Posted by Bear McCreary on June 19th, 2009

I wrote my first cue for Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 in August, 2007 and finished scoring the series finale in February, 2009.  Earlier this year, I posted a blog entry asking all you fans what you wanted on the album.  And, wow, you guys certainly responded!

I kept that blog post handy while I was making my selections for the album.  In fact, several of the tracks that made the final cut were ones I wouldn’t have considered were it not for an astute fan mentioning it here on this blog.

Narrowing the selections down to only two discs was difficult enough, but then my entire team and I spent months recording, mixing, editing and compiling that two years’ worth of effort into the ultimate listening experience.  I even composed or expanded several pieces specifically for the album, and spent weeks compiling material for the expanded 20-page CD booklet that will accompany each album.  And I spent this week at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles, putting the finishing touches on this epic journey, in preparation for a July 21, 2009 release date!  (UPDATE: The release date is now July 28th.)

Now, I can finally announce the official album track list and provide a glimpse of the cover:

Rest assured that these tracks are nice and long.  The second disc includes virtually every second of the Daybreak score.  In fact, “Assault on the Colony” alone runs OVER FIFTEEN MINUTES!  It is an epic battle cue intended to sit alongside Season 1’s “Battle on the Asteroid,” Season 2’s “Prelude to War” and Season 3’s “Storming New Caprica.” (We’re tweaking the mix of “Assault” right now, as I write this.  I realize it has actually become my favorite BSG action cue.  I can’t wait for you guys to hear it!)

The best place to pick up copy is at one of our live “Music of Battlestar Galactica” concerts at the House of Blues in San Diego, July 23, 24 and 25.  Tickets are on sale now!

Once the record comes out, I’ll write an entry going into detail about the individual tracks.  But I knew you guys would want to see the track list early.  A big thanks goes out to all the fans who chimed in on the blog here and helped me pick these cues.

Also, I’m on TWITTER now! Follow @bsglive for concert updates and the most current information on special guests, surprise announcements, etc.

See you in San Diego next month!

UPDATE 6-20-09: I forgot to mention that I’m being interviewed tomorrow night (Sunday, June 21) on NPR’s “ALL THINGS CONSIDERED,” discussing my score for “Battlestar Galactica.”  The show airs between 5:30 and 6:00pm, although that can change depending on time zone.  Check local listings.  Also, it will be on the NPR website starting at 7pm ET.

Wow, that’s quite an impressive tracklist. Right now, I can’t think of any particular musical piece I miss.

From what I’ve heard in the episode itself, I tend to agree with your statement that Assault on the Colony is your best action cue ever. And 15 minutes, that’s gotta be by far your longest piece ever for BSG.

I already know what’s going to be my most played album this summer. 32 days to go…

Thanks for signing my CDs the other week via Raya via Linda.

Dude. “Assault on the Colony” clocking in at 15 minutes?! I can’t wait!

I’ve been making mixes of your more action-packed cues for the last couple of years to row to. I have a rowing machine at home and row nearly every weekday for a half an hour or more. Knowing that I’m about to have 15 minutes more of taiko-driven ass-kicking tunes in one track…?

    EPIC rows on the horizon.

    All I gotta say.

    Thanks,

Impressive to be sure, but I was really REALLY hoping for the version of “All Along The Watchtower” as heard at the end of season 3.

Still won’t prevent me from buying this album and playing it to death :)

Does “Farewell Apollo” include both the scene in Kara’s cell and the “Wander My Friends” version on the hangar deck, or only one of them? If it’s just one, the first one would better since we already have a few tracks with the family theme.

I’m amazed here…this is a really awesome tracklist. I literally can’t think of any track I don’t remember from hearing it in their respective episodes. I can remember them all, and that says a LOT bout how your music goes.

I’m so surprised that “Farewell Apollo”, “Roslin Escapes”, “Cally Descends”, and “Grand Old Lady” got the track list love they deserve! They’re small scenes, but it’s little scenes like these that really make your music stand out and make the scene what it truly is. Saying a final goodbye to a life you’ve always known and stood for your entire life; A loving couple exchanging goodbyes and revealing their true feelings to their comrades during a blood-spilled hour; a fractured mind that is longing to escape, only at the heels of another’s violent act; and the realization something we love must be let go to continue forward. THIS, sir, that underlying meaning of those pieces, is what makes us proud listeners, fans, and reminds us we are all human, defects and all. We can be truly better than how we are now.

The three I’ve been craving for though is the instrumental of “Gaeta’s Lament”, “Kara Remembers”, “Laura Runs”, “Elegy”, and “Goodbye Sam/The Heart of the Sun”. Those are filled with so much raw emotion, they get me every time.

    - Fernando

I’ll be at Comic-Con on Saturday, but I unfortunately won’t be able to attend the concert.

I know you said you’d be there on Sunday selling & signing CDs, will the CDs be on sale anywhere else on Saturday?

Wow, just looking at this track list and the amount of work all of you must have done… thanks so much for all of the work. I can’t wait to get my hands on it! The whole last season was amazing, and the tracks chosen are a great representation of what really got me during the episodes.

Frak yes. This is going to be insanely badass. Can’t wait for more details.

Wow, I’m really excited! Thanks for posting this!

Looks like everything I wanted from Daybreak is on here and a lot of what I was looking for (and honestly things I was settling on expecting wouldn’t make the cut from the rest of season 4 made it). And wow, TWO versions of Gaeta’s Lament!! Totally was not expecting that… figured you would save one for a future release.

Although I find it interesting some of the things you said early on were almost certainties ended up not making it this go round (mainly the battle scene from He Believeth In Me).

I am wondering the same thing as Steve about Farewell Apollo, as I like both the scene with Starbuck and when Apollo actually leaves. I’m betting it’s got both parts.

Now THIS will be COOL !!!

A 20 page booklet, 2 CDs full to the brim with some of the best music ever written for Television (and better than most movie scores).

    I think we’re being spoiled here :-)

Unfortunately, although I’ll be at Comic-Con, I’m watching the budget a bit, so I’ll be skipping the concert.

I also note that this is LaLaLand Records’ 100th CD. An honor well deserved by all !!!

    So Say We All,

    OneBuck !!!

I need this soundtrack in my life and I need it now!

Speaking of releasing things, any hope of a BSG music book with tabs?

You give and you give, and yet we always ask for more. ;)

I love the cover and I am thrilled with the track list. I would buy the soundtrack for Diaspora Oratorio alone, but I’m glad The Signal, Kara Remembers, and Goodbye Sam/The Heart of the Sun made it in, as I absolutely adore those pieces. Alas, I cannot be at any of the concerts, but I will definitely purchase this album once it’s available. And perhaps continue to look forward to any future compilations of music on the show that didn’t make it into the separate season soundtracks.

    Thank you, Bear.

    Ditto, ditto, ditto!

    Bear,

Does “Among the Ruins” or “Funeral Pyre” include the score when Kara buries her body? Thanks.

    Just making sure. :)

    -Mike

    Sounds like a great compilation!

I’m especially thrilled by the inclusion of “The Alliance”, assuming this is the cue that was played right before “Diaspora Oratorio” in “Revelations”. That one sent chills down my spine!

And I’m glad that you’ve decided to go for longer tracks on disc two. The suites on the Season 2 and Season 3 albums are among my very favorites. Are there any rather long arrangements on disc one?

Oh and which tracks didn’t you consider for the album, at first? I’m asking out of pure curiosity. :)

Bear, you just made my day. No, make that a year. The track list looks great, and I’m thrilled to see that there’s an entire disc dedicated to Daybreak. Really, couldn’t ask for more as a fan. So say we all.

    Yay! Roslin and Adama Reunited!

Looks like a wonderful album. Can’t wait for the blog about each track. Thank you again, Mr. McCreary!

That track list looks unbelievable. Thanks for taking all of our suggestions. I cant wait! It will be the album of the year.
And its good to see you on Twitter now! :)

That track list looks awesome, and I must admit… I’m amazed by the cover art. It too looks awesome.

But I have one little question… on Amazon, about a week ago, album art was posted to go with the pre-order of the soundtrack. (http://img199.imageshack.us/i/51ik26myzlss500.jpg/) Interestingly Amazon took that down shortly after it was posted. Is there a story behind it? Just curious.

Also, would it be possible to post a higher-resolution copy of the cover? I’m a bit of a freak about having album artwork for my iTunes library, and because iTunes doesn’t cary your work I can’t use the “Get Album Artwork” feature to get the nice 600×600 artwork. So it’s a bit of a strange request, but would it be possible to post artwork that’s about that size (or bigger)? Just ’cause I’d love to have it on nice display when I listen to the music on my computer, when I get the CD (*counts down to the release*) Sorry for being a nuisance, but oh well… that’s me.

I was jazzed just to see that the instrumental version of the Lament got on the album (after seeing the video from the concert, I guessed it would be a hybridized arrangement with the score from the end of “Guess What” being represented by and extended bridge). Definitely looking forward to these CDs.

Oh wow, this is going to be worth every penny.

I am ridiculously excited for this album. The track list looks fantastic, and includes the vast majority of the pieces I was hoping for.

I cannot WAIT to hear that battle cue. The longer the better I say!

I’m wetting my pants right now…. can’t fucking wait!!!!!!

Til then I keep myself busy with the Caprica soundtrack, which just got delivered yesterday. For some reason I didn’t see it in stores here in Japan though I bought all the BSG-soundtracks here. Well, thank God for Amazon…

The tracklist really does look like the ultimate listening experience… everything I hoped for and more :-))

    Can’t wait! :)

    :o I love you Bear <3

    I just pissed my pants.

it’s official…i won’t be leaving my room with my cd player/computer/ipod once this cd comes out.

i’m glad to see you included Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1 into disk one. that would’ve been a hard piece to live without.

    i cannot wait.

Nice selections, Bear. Like “musicpaladin2007″ I was hoping for the battle music from “He Believeth In Me”. But as some wise people used to say: you can’t always get what you want. I still have 130+ minutes of frakkin’ awesome music to look foward to.

And by the way my copy of Caprica arrived today. Nice score Bear and thank you for all your hard work.

You included The Alliance! A million thank yous are in order.

    Great Tracklist!
Now it’s even harder to get over the remaining time till the release without a preview track.

Couldn’t you just pick one you think would be appropriate and post it ???
No one would be dissapointed if you choose ;)
    All will be happy

We just want to hear your music :)

Wow, 34 tracks? That’s awesome! I can’t wait to pick up a copy at the House of Blues!

WOW! This is a crazy good track list. I love it! The one I was really hoping for is on here….I think. I have some questions, which will obv. sound stupid to you, but I really have to know lol.

For “Elegy” from Someone to Watch Over Me, is that the piano piece playing during the opening montage of Kara’s daily routine? Cause I LOVED that music and really wanted it to be on here…I think that’s what “Elegy” is…am I right? :-/

And for “Kara Remembers”, does that include the full-on “Heeding the Call”/”All Along The Watchtower” music that we heard in the episode, or is it just Kara fiddling around? :)

And now I just need to comment on a few of these….uhh…WOW. I want it. NOW. The ones I’m looking forward to most after seeing this are:

“Gaeta’s Lament” – both instrumental and vocal because I loved it and yeees, I’m so happy you got the actor to sing on here :)

“The Signal” – LOVED it in “Revelations”

“Funeral Pyre” – it says the actress who plays Dualla is in it, so does that mean this includes her little improvised tune that she seems? Plus, all the music in that episode was amaaazing, so I’m very excited for this either way.

“Blood on the Scales” – one word: yeeeees!

“The Line” – I love this scene and the music in it is awesome.

“Assault on the Colony” – 15 minutes? best action score? I. Need. It….NOW.

“Kara’s Coordinates”/”Earth”/”Goodbye, Sam” – all of these for the same reasons: simply fantastic!

I really can’t wait. This looks awesome.

This album looks like its gonna be incredible just like all the others! Absolutely can not wait!

Only disappointment with it, for me at least, is that the awesome music from the battle scenes in “He That Believeth In Me” doesn’t appear to be there, any chance of ever seeing that music released?

Every day this album is not in my possession is a sad day. :)

This looks just brilliant Bear, a worthy capper to an awesome run of soundtracks. One question though: are the songs from the club scenes in “Daybreak” (Brendan’s “When Will the Work Be Done” and that remix of “The Signal”) going to be tentatively included on that “rarities and extras” disc you mentioned down the line?

O.M.G. I THINK THIS JUST MADE MY DAY.

    I can’t wait!!!

Also, am curious, does “Kara Remembers” include the amazing two-player piano piece that Kara and her dad play together (complete with Rock accompaniment in the background) at the end of the episode? That was among the most awesome musical moments in all TV history, if I do say so myself.

Aw, no Razor. The one during the attack on the shipyard was what I was looking forward to, I must’ve had that scene playing dozens of times in the background just for the music. Oh well.

    GrandFromage

Actually, Bear made a post about this earlier. He’s releasing a combined soundtrack for both “The Plan” and “Razor” later this year. So don’t give up hope yet!

    -Mike

There will be an own soundtrack CD for “Razor” together with “The Plan”.

And the battle music from “He That Believeth in Me” doesn’t really work that well for an album. It’s good together with visuals, but doesn’t stand on its own.

Some more music from “Sometimes a Great Notion” would be nice, but I guess that depends on the length of “Funeral Pyre”, because technically that shouldn’t include Dualla’s great humming. So maybe this is a mix of more tracks.

    emily,

I think it’s pretty obvious that it does :-)

To leave that cue off of a 2CD set like this would be criminal.

Wow, it’s like someone came to my front door and said that Christmas was coming in July. I couldn’t have asked for a more comprehensive track list. Thank you for taking the fan recommendations so close to heart, Bear. Assault on the Colony alone is enough to justify the purchase. I see an endless Windows Media Player loop in my future…

Steve wrote: “And the battle music from “He That Believeth in Me” doesn’t really work that well for an album. It’s good together with visuals, but doesn’t stand on its own.”

Well, to be honest, I am not so sure about that. The music in that sequence is buried under tons of sound effects. It would be nice to be able to enjoy it without them. But ok, Bear’s decision stands. Perhaps he can include it as an bonus track on the “Razor/Plan” soundtrack or some future BSG soundtrack box-set… Let’s wait and see. And in the meantime I’ll will be happy with this incredible season 4 album.

Slightly Off-Topic: I just got my copy of the Caprica soundtrack CD; had to wait for it a couple of extra days while it was forwarded to my temporary PO Box. While it is fabulous, I’m a little perplexed at how the CDDB titled this album when iTunes picked up the track listings…
    “Caprica: Pilot [LLL]”
Bear, do you happen to know what LLL means?

Cannot wait!! I’m trying to convince my partner to take our vacation in San Diego.. hope to see you there ;)

    @ Macker: LLL = La-La Land Records… Just a wild guess… ;)

Great news Bear! I can’t wait for July 21st!

Couple of quick questions though. I was wondering, like Steve, if “Farewell Apollo” includes the music when Lee visits Kara in her cell. It would be awesome if it did, but also understandable if it didn’t.

Secondly, I wonder if you included the weaved together version of “Wander My Friends” and “Roslin and Adama” into one of the ending tracks in the second disc. (After all, you did say that virtually every single second of the Daybreak score was on that disc ;))

Still trying to see if I have tim eto make the HOB concerts! Although it would be great if you guys head up north to Vancouver!

Oh, let me be clear: I totally agree with every track on that album, and don’t believe that the He That Believeth battle is better than any of the choices that did make the cut… just was stating that it’s a statement of the mass of outstanding material if Bear had to go back on that thought that it would probably make the album.

Totally love it, Bear! Thanks a bunch for putting so much effort in everything and making it – not just, but also because of us – a double CD!

Can’t wait to hold this master piece in my hands. Great job!

    Cheers
    Dee

Thanks for all your hard work. Can’t wait to pre-order my signed copy of this, as I was luckily able to do for Caprica; I actually got the email heads up from La La Land about the start time of the sale, but I was going to be graduating at that time; luckily there was enough of a supply for me to order some that night! :)

I know this seems strange, but I thought I’d mention it since your heavily connected to the show. I have noticed a few odd things about the show on DVD that I’m hoping you might tell the right people to rectify?

    1) The miniseries on DVD cuts off several seconds from the start of the TV-aired version of part 2.

    2) The act break in “You Can’t Go Home Again” just after Cmdr. Adama yells at Tigh about wanting to continue the search for Starbuck is far too sudden, such that one doesn’t see Tigh’s reaction that’s allowed in the TV version.

    3) The DVDs seem poorly encoded such that there’s a pause during episodes. This is understandable for the miniseries, since it’s one long story, but The X-Files DVDs (or any DVDs from Fox Home) avoid this by placing any dual layering skip at the start of the 3rd or 4th episode on a disc. Universal’s approach has resulted in odd pauses, as I’ve seen during “Lay Down Your Burdens 2″ and a Season 4.0 episode. This always means that any accompanying audio commentary is missing the few seconds lost during the pause, so it’s hard to understand what is being discussed after the pause.

I know this seems strange to mention such things to you, but I wrote Universal and Ron Moore’s question thread in 2007 and Universal made the same mistakes for the 4.0 DVD.

    Anyway, thanks and take care.

And this has got me *re-downloading** the finale, basically because I need my music fix.

I mean, of course, the writing and acting and all other things are sublime, all to make the perfect end to a perfect show, but the music… I need the music!

*BSG hasn’t been shown in Finland since the end of season 2. Otherwise it’d be saved in a special place on my DVR. The only options are downloads and DVDs. If you have a region-free player, the region 1 releases are always better.

(In fact, most of my favorite shows never made it here, or they’re hopelessly behind in the season count, while in nextdoor Sweden, the channels pay a little bit more coin to be more current. For Finns reading this, pay for the Swedish channels, it’s so worth it!)

**Of course I have season 4.5 in the same preorder cart as the season 4 CD!

Oh, and thank you for chording out that Gaeta’s Lament sheet music you posted many moons ago. I’m in this frustrating predicament of being able to read music… but not on the instrument I’m playing full time right now. It’s so frustrating, and I should just sit down and let the fret markers be my friends and practice.

But why do that, when I can just read the chords or tabs? The lazy person’s way out. ;)

I’m totally rocking Gaeta’s Lament on ukulele. Us “weird” instrument players have to stick together!

Mathew: [Smacks Forehead] DUHHHHHH! Now that makes sense. Thanks!

19th was my b-day, what a great present to get the track list, all excellent choices, just waiting on the cd now :)

And I look foward to those unreleased tracks in the future. Hopefully we’ll get the “A Promise to Return” in the version that was used in the episode “The Farm”.?.

Oh I forgot all about it and just realized… unless you snuck it and spliced it to the beginning of a track like you did with Watchtower at the beginning of the Season 3 album… looks like the revamped Prologue from No Exit didn’t make it on this cut. No biggie though.

musicpaladin2007… “looks like the revamped Prologue from No Exit didn’t make it on this cut.”

Oh, I wish this would have made the cut as well. The re-orchestration of that piece was absolutely phenomenal. Hopefully, this will be on a future release of your cues that didn’t make the cut.

    Hey Bear!

Great Track list! Totally can’t wait.

I have one question. I was wondering if Brendan’s song “When Will The Work Be Done” will be in the “Caprica City,Before the Fall” track?

    Thanks again!

Hey guys, kind of off-topic, but not really: Speaking of Gaeta’s Lament, anyone have any ideas how to make em/F# work on an ukulele?

Before you say “Well, I know guitar but nothing about uke” – the challenge is basically this: 4 strings, re-entrant tuning: gCEA. The closest I get is emadd9, which I suppose is technically all the important notes, just not in right order.

This is the soundtrack event of the year for me, I can’t wait. Thank you for posting the track list, all my favorites are here oh and . . . . PLEASE DO A CONCERT IN SYDNEY AUSTRALIA!!!

The revamped Prologue from No Exit would be interesting. I most wished to see Ellen’s Theme (heard on full in No Exit and softly in other Seasons Three and Four episodes) on the CD, but I can hardly complain about the ones that made it. Especially when one is titled “Goodbye Sam”. That’s just neat.

OK, seriously, I need to stop posting on this entry.

I listened to the NPR clip. You are very sly haha. You sneaked in a transition from the S1 version of Shape of Things to Come to a tease of An Easterly View… also caught the tease of Kara Remembers. ;-)

Bear – thank you SO much for the fabulous news about the soundtrack! WOOHOO! I’ve just finished listening to the NPR interview (had to catch it online; missed the broadcast) and damnit, man, you & the music made me cry (again) because A) I miss the show SO much and B) the music is so massively, incredibly, fabulously powerful (poignant, inspiring…inject favorite over-the-top adjective here). Thank you!

    Link to Bear’s NPR interview:
    http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=92631106381&h=vu_iC&u=giH1c&ref=mf

Great NPR interview! Yes, the subtle sneak peak of Kara Remembers was a definite fan cookie.

echofoxtwo… “Impressive to be sure, but I was really REALLY hoping for the version of “All Along The Watchtower” as heard at the end of season 3.”

Well… cut me some slack. After all, it IS the season FOUR album. :)

Steve… “Does “Farewell Apollo” include both the scene in Kara’s cell and the “Wander My Friends” version on the hangar deck, or only one of them?”

It’s actually only the sequence on the Hangar Deck. The first piece was on the short list of contenders, but didn’t make the final cut, I’m sorry to say. And it didn’t really fit musically with the hangar deck sequence as much as it would need to for the album, so that scene you’re describing will have to be on the “extras” album.

Cory… “I know you said you’d be there on Sunday selling & signing CDs, will the CDs be on sale anywhere else on Saturday?”

There is some chatter about BG Season 4 CDs being on sale somewhere at the convention. Stay tuned to the blog for details, because there’s nothing confirmed yet. However, I can say that I probably won’t be doing a signing on Saturday.

Plainsong… “Speaking of releasing things, any hope of a BSG music book with tabs?”

I’m thinking about doing something like this, although I don’t know about tabs. Maybe some kind of sheet music. I don’t know, I confess it’s not high on the list of priorities right now, but I’m thinking about it.

MJL356… “Does “Among the Ruins” or “Funeral Pyre” include the score when Kara buries her body? ”

    Yes. :)

Valdore… “But I have one little question… on Amazon, about a week ago, album art was posted to go with the pre-order of the soundtrack. (http://img199.imageshack.us/i/51ik26myzlss500.jpg/) Interestingly Amazon took that down shortly after it was posted. Is there a story behind it? Just curious.”

That was a placeholder cover that the label sent Amazon. It was never intended to be the cover. Just something for Amazon to put there.

Matt2thepatt… “I just pissed my pants.”

I should have put a warning label on the blog entry.

blasterboy606… “For “Elegy” from Someone to Watch Over Me, is that the piano piece playing during the opening montage of Kara’s daily routine?”

    Yes.

“And for “Kara Remembers”, does that include the full-on “Heeding the Call”/”All Along The Watchtower” music that we heard in the episode, or is it just Kara fiddling around? :)”

    Hmmm… I dunno. :)

    -Bear

“One question though: are the songs from the club scenes in “Daybreak” (Brendan’s “When Will the Work Be Done” and that remix of “The Signal”) going to be tentatively included on that “rarities and extras” disc you mentioned down the line?”

Yes. It broke my heart not to include them, because Brendan and Jonathan Snipes did fabulous work creating three songs that credibly live in the BSG universe. But, they REALLY broke up the flow of the score, no matter where I put them. They will absolutely be on the “extras” album.

GrandFormage… “The one during the attack on the shipyard was what I was looking forward to, I must’ve had that scene playing dozens of times in the background just for the music. Oh well.”

As Mike and Steve already said, there will be a future release for “Razor” and “The Plan.”

Steve… “Some more music from “Sometimes a Great Notion” would be nice…”

The “Notion” tracks are really long. Trust me, man… there IS no more score from that episode. It’s basically everything, save for a couple little transitional drum pieces. :)

    Muldfeld…

Wow, those are some incredibly astute observations about the DVD releases. I have no frakkin’ idea, sorry. I’m curious though…

plainsong… “I’m totally rocking Gaeta’s Lament on ukulele. Us “weird” instrument players have to stick together!”

Sounds cool! Also, with regard to your question, maybe the best thing to do is drop-tune the ukulele so that the open G string is actually an F#? Or even more drastic, drop that C string down a tri-tone down to F#! You’d have to re-learn the other chords, but you could get the F# on the bottom of the E chord. :)

    -Bear

Heh, heh, one out of 14 ain’t too bad ; )

(Actually, I kind of have 2 out of 34, although I had the Kara body burning scene labeled as “Funeral Pyres.)

Seriously, a great list, and I’m so looking forward to hearing “Diaspora” in all its glory, without all the screaming and yelling in the background. Plus, as we all know, there’s going to be plenty of material available for the extras box set….

Holy Frack! That’s one impressive track list. Everything that I wanted to hear when watching seems to be on here. July can’t come soon enough. Bear, I just wanna say thank you for delivering some of the most impressive pieces of music I’ve ever heard. In my opinion you’re up there with John Williams, Howard Shore, the late Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Giacchino and James Horner. I look forward to listening to your music for Caprica and future projects. So say we all!

Secretly hoping that one of the “Someone to Watch Over Me” tracks includes the romantic music where Tyrol is in the projection, walking up the stairs. ;)

I’m really looking forward to this release. :) Is it July yet? It still kinda feels like June…

This looks frakin excellent. I cannot wait to get my hands on this. You rock, Bear.

I’m glad to hear that every last bit of score from Notion made it, cause that scene with Kara’s body in the field also deserves some love.

    July is so far away!

Re: “The “Notion” tracks are really long. Trust me, man… there IS no more score from that episode. It’s basically everything, save for a couple little transitional drum pieces. :)”

Ah cool. I guess you folded most into those two tracks, despite the titles. Which also explains why “Funeral Pyre” includes the vocals. :)

*sniff* though about the lack of the Kara/Lee farewell in “Six of One” :( The extras album can’t come soon enough. There are some other small, but nice tracks here and there that haven’t been recognized yet.

Wow, that set list and the two CDs frakking rock! I can’t wait until Comic Con now! This will be the first concert of yours that I’ve been able to attend. I’m going to the Thursday show and hope to say hello to you Bear (my poor wallet could only get the $55 tix) but I’ve got a few friends coming with me who got introduced to your work from SCC (we met through that crazy, dedicated fandom) and I’m so excited to be educating them to all things Bear and BSG!

One question – do you know where or when you’re signing at Comic Con on Sunday? Can you provide more details on that as the event gets closer? It’s one big frakking place, as you well know! :D

That’s an incredible list, Bear. I’m pretty stoked to blast “Resurrection Hub” in the office whenever one of the clients my co-worker hates calls and asks for him. It’s just ominous enough to have it be their collective theme.

Question: Will the hypothetical “extras” disk have outtakes and alternate tracks? I’ve always been curious to hear what you came up with as other potential series themes, for example.

That looks so awesome! Can’t wait to listen to it. Quick question, does the “Starbuck Disappear” track contain both “Deathbed and Maelstrom” and “Under the Wing” themes?

The only thing wrong with this list… is it means we are getting closer and closer to getting no new BSG music. Sure we have “The Plan” coming up, but that’s about it. I need more.

I think I’ll start saving some extra cash right now to try and make the next concert (there BETTER be another concert).

Thanks again for all your efforts here, Bear.

I have a feeling I already know the answer to this….

Will the piece that played over the Battle of the Ionian Nebula in ‘He That Believeth in Me’ be a part of Baltar’s Cult, or is it something that’s been shelved for the time being? (Extras release later?)

Looks like an absolutely brilliant frakkin’ release though, probably the best yet. And thank you, thank you, thank you for listening to your fans and making this a double-disc release =)

Will Raya Yarbrough sing in Armenian for the tracks “The Cult of Baltar” and” Assault on the Colony”? Since she did in “A Distant Sadness” in the Season 3 soundtrack. And if that is the case will the lyrics be on the booklet?

    vicmackey187 wrote:

“Seriously, a great list, and I’m so looking forward to hearing “Diaspora” in all its glory, without all the screaming and yelling in the background.”

So will the congregation at my wedding in September. My fiance and I have chosen this track as our Processional, especially due to the lyrics which portray the end of one journey…
…and the beginning of another. Thanks so much Bear!

smystal0, the lyrics in “The Cult of Baltar” are in Old English, and the ones in “Assault on the Colony” are in Latin. Lyrics are here

So what are the chances of us getting a “First Listen” preview before the album is actually released?

Bear says:”There is some chatter about BG Season 4 CDs being on sale somewhere at the convention. Stay tuned to the blog for details, because there’s nothing confirmed yet. However, I can say that I probably won’t be doing a signing on Saturday”

If ANYONE can pick me up the album in San Diego I would be glad to pay for the costs + shipping + afew bucks for your time.

    Please contact me at

    Bear – I can’t WAITTTTTTTTTT for this album !
Will there be autographed copies available through the lala land website?

Can’t wait to listen to Diaspora Oratio by itself, Jesus! Now, please, Bear, say that Raya’s version of Kobol’s Last Gleaming (from the moment Hera is running inside Galactica and Athena and Laura are looking for her) and the song that plays when Caprica-Six and Baltar arrive at the CIC and see the final five up there will be at the Daybreak CD, please say they will be there.

Hey Bear… can’t wait for this soundtrack to release in July… I’m very excited…

    and yet a bit surprised…

Where is the music to the opening of Season 4? the battle in the Ionian Nebula? (or something)

That music was so incredible… I’ve been dying to hear it ever since season 4 premiered… is that going to be on the CD???

I hope so… please let us know!

    -Scott

Vinicius- I’m sure that’ll be the end of the “Assault on the Colony.” It’s a long sequence, and that bit comes in at the end right as they enter the CIC.

Just conjecture, though. I’m having fun trying to figure out what each track is going to sound like.

Awesome tracklist! As always of course, but i never thought it would be THAT awesome!
I am just missing two tracks: The renewed intro seen at the beginning of “No Exit” and the battle-music from “He That Believeth In Me”. It’s completely understandable of course, but i seriously hope that they will be on the possible album that you mentioned, the one that shall include some of the tracks that didn’t make it into the Season-Soundtracks.
    Thanks a million!

Your music is really inspiring, I listened to it during studiing for my exams.
It feels like touching my soul, really divine music, Mr McCreary.
Please don’t ever stop making it, and
Thank you very much for it.

Wow! What a list! July 22nd can’t come soon enough! You’ve assembled an amazing list of tracks, including a few that i noticed but never thought would get on the album, like “Boomer Takes Hera”. I’m especially looking forward to “Assault on the Colony” and “Diaspora Oratorio”! Once it gets in my CD player, it won’t be leaving for months. I can’t thank you enough for creating such soul-touching music, and for creating a 2 disc album. I truly believe that I will still be listening to these songs in fifty years! I don’t think its possible to be more excited about music coming out then I am for this! It’s literally the bright spot of my entire summer!

The only thing missing is the Battle of the Ionian Nebula, but I hope you will get that CD released of all the cues that didn’t make the cuts on these season CD’s. There’s so much wonderful music to fill it with!

In response to Vinicus, I’m actually thinking that scene will be part of “Baltar’s Sermon” as opposed to the action cue. There is definitely 15 minutes worth of action to fill!

    Nooooooo!!!!

Amazon’s entry now says “This title will be released on July 28, 2009.” Grrr.

What gives with the delay? Is it just Amazon or is it everyone? I would like to know in case I need to cancel my Amazon order.

I don’t know if I can wait another week :(

I definitely hope that the “No Exit” prologue music gets added in whatever further releases are to come; I was really hoping it might open this album (but at least the Hub is in there… of course, how could that conceivably not be?) Since most BSG episodes open in roughly the same way, the revamped opening was a giveaway “this episode is even more important and awesome than you thought it was going to be” right from the start. I guess I wont be deleting the 59sec audio clip I stripped from that episode… er… I didn’t just admit to that….

    Fantastic list.

Theres only 1 that i have hoped to have, the tyrol & boomer love theme, that plays when they are sharing the projection, i find myself replaying that part of the episode over and over as the music is so heart-felt and great to listen too.

Is there any chance some part of it will be included on the daybreak disk ? I remember hearing it again as Tyrol said goodbye.

Or maybe the extra’s disk in the future ?

Otherwise amazing cd, CANT WAIT to listen to it, ive been waiting since the start of season 4 haha.

    Vicmackeu187… “Heh, heh, one out of 14 ain’t too bad ; )”

Not bad at all! Which is the one you got? :)

jb1234… “Secretly hoping that one of the “Someone to Watch Over Me” tracks includes the romantic music where Tyrol is in the projection, walking up the stairs. ;)”

Ah, man. Unfortunately no. That was a tough call, too. It’s another cut for the extras disc. Even with two CDs, there are still lots of good things left over from Season 4.

lenageek… “One question – do you know where or when you’re signing at Comic Con on Sunday? Can you provide more details on that as the event gets closer? It’s one big frakking place, as you well know! :D”

I don’t know yet when / where / if. But, I’ll put it here on the blog as soon as I know. See you then!

ieatglue528… “Question: Will the hypothetical “extras” disk have outtakes and alternate tracks? I’ve always been curious to hear what you came up with as other potential series themes, for example.”

I’m considering it, if people really want to hear the dead ends I sometimes take. For example, I wrote a completely different version of “Passacaglia” that was rejected and then I wrote the really good one that everyone knows and loves. There might be a place on the album for stuff like that.

therealBG… “Quick question, does the “Starbuck Disappear” track contain both “Deathbed and Maelstrom” and “Under the Wing” themes?”

Yes, it contains both the Kara Destiny Theme and the Kara / Lee Love Theme.

Smystal0… “Will Raya Yarbrough sing in Armenian for the tracks “The Cult of Baltar” and” Assault on the Colony”?”

No armenian this time. She’s singing in other languages this time, and yes, all the lyrics will be in the booklet. Vickmackey187 pointed out the lyrics on my blog (thanks!)

Matt2thepatt… “So what are the chances of us getting a “First Listen” preview before the album is actually released?”

Pretty slim, honestly. Not because I mind the idea, but just because I’m so freakin’ busy I don’t have time to think about it.

daveCFPrez… “Will there be autographed copies available through the lala land website?”

I honestly don’t know. Hopefully eventually, but not before the concert, to the best of my understanding.

    -Bear

musicpaladin2007… “Amazon’s entry now says “This title will be released on July 28, 2009.” Grrr.”

Yes. It’s officially been moved back to the 28th. It’s not just Amazon, the entire release date has been pushed back. Now, the ONLY place to get it the week of the 21st is at my concerts in San Diego!

Andywhitto… “Is there any chance some part of it will be included on the daybreak disk ? I remember hearing it again as Tyrol said goodbye.”

Sadly, there was ONE (yes, only ONE) decent cue from the finale that didn’t fit on the “Daybreak” disc and it was the cue where Tyrol says goodbye. So, both the house projection music and the cue from the finale when he leaves will be on the extras disc.

    -Bear

Hey Bear, I as well as others have been inquiring about the opening music for season 4… “Battle of the Ionian Nebula” Will that music have to wait for the extras set?

I just loved not only the battle music, but the musical part where Tigh has the daydream of himself shooting Adama through the eye…. when I hear that music or imagine it, it literally gives me goosebumps… :-)

Will that be on the extra disc? or season 4 set?

I wanted to also chime in and say that I would also love to hear good alternate takes of certain tracks. I always loved hearing alternate versions of movie scores, like by John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith.

I think the best way will probably be to have 30 second samples or something of each track and put them up on the website, and then let people vote for which ones they like the best…

    or something like that…

    thanks

    -Scott

Great! i can understand you having trouble including everything, there was soo much fantastic music in the finale.

Gives me something to look forward to after the season 4 ost has released too!

Side-note, i have to say i much prefer your score to T:SCC than Elfman did for Terminator Salvation, your score kept the ‘feeling’ of terminator while adding emotion and evolving the music, i hate to say it but in comparison, Elfmans score was completely unnoticeable and generic for me.
Yet another movie i wish you had scored lol.

“Ah, man. Unfortunately no. That was a tough call, too. It’s another cut for the extras disc. Even with two CDs, there are still lots of good things left over from Season 4.”

    - That’s cool. Still plenty to look forward to. :)

    Hi Bear.

Out of curiosity how long is the Dreilide Thrace Sonata?

route_82… ““Battle of the Ionian Nebula” Will that music have to wait for the extras set?”

    Yes.

tykell… “Out of curiosity how long is the Dreilide Thrace Sonata?”

It’s about 5 minutes long. Check out the live version I played at the California Plaza Show a few weeks ago. It’s pretty similar in running time to the album version.

    -Bear

Hope I’m not being too greedy or impatient, but do you have a rough idea when the extras set will be released?

Well, my sadness at the delay of an extra week is made up for by my exuberance at the prospect of even more Galactica goodness beyond Season 4, Razor/The Plan and the Live CD.

Truly, the musical journey is just beginning, rather then ending! (which, a few months after the show ended is saying something). Thanks so much Bear!

About the outtakes on the extra disc…

Bear wrote: I’m considering it, if people really want to hear the dead ends I sometimes take. For example, I wrote a completely different version of “Passacaglia” that was rejected and then I wrote the really good one that everyone knows and loves. There might be a place on the album for stuff like that.

I guess it all depends on how much discs this extra set is going to have. If it will be something of a three or four disc set I would welcome one disc for outtakes. But if there’s only one disc the precious disc space should be used for “final” versions… Just my opinion. I know Bear will take the right decision. Let’s wait and see…

Finally it happens, I am a fan, jaime beaucoup Caprica but does not work and sarah chronicles BSG is also very well

CaptPorridge… “Hope I’m not being too greedy or impatient, but do you have a rough idea when the extras set will be released?”

Patience is a virtue! :) I have no idea at this point. Next year probably. This double album should be enough to satisfy your BG soundtrack hunger for a few months.

Mathew… “But if there’s only one disc the precious disc space should be used for “final” versions… Just my opinion. ”

I hear ya, and agree. It depends on how many discs. After all, the outtakes and abandoned drafts are INTERESTING intellectually, but won’t necessarily make for an album-worthy listening experience, you know?

    -Bear

Bear, I gotta say, this level of fan interaction is really fantastic. You don’t see many people who take the time out to actually talk with their fans and answer direct questions. Props to you for that, it’s pretty frakkin’ fantastic =)

Now for an actual question…. Regarding the “extras” album. Is it something that’s a lock, or is it something that’s still just an idea floating around that may or may not happen?

In the event that it IS a reality, is it still just a loose idea, or have you pegged down anything about it? Be that tracks, ballpark release date, etc….

In the event that it can’t happen for whatever reason, is there any way for you to be able to release these missing pieces otherwise? You know…without getting yourself in trouble. We wouldn’t want that =)

I’m curious. Are there going to be any quotes of Tigh’s theme on either discs? It’s definitely the favorite of all my themes since I definitely associate it with his character more than I find any of the other themes associable with their characters.

Even before I had seen season 2 and the season 2 soundtrack was available, just listening to Martial Law, I could tell it had something to do with Tigh and that was the first time I’d heard his theme!

    Hey Bear,

Just wondering- are the track times on amazon correct? I haven’t seen them anywhere else, so I’m just making sure ;)

I was also wondering. Is “Among The Ruins” the awesome atonal piece you wrote where it shows all the humans/cylons silently exploring the wasteland earth? I hope so. It may not be as musically entertaining as your other pieces, but it’s definitely unique and I really hope that is it!

    To the Master,

Your music has meant so much to me. After years of crappy, monotonous score music – BSG was not just a fresh sound for television, but for music in general. Every single person I have turned on to your music has, in turn, become a giant fan of the series. They hear it and say, “Wow! This must be a good show!” They then harp on endlessly about the terrific acting and great special effects, but it’s always the music that gets the biggest reaction. I had a party for the finale and one of my friends, who had never watched the show, was in tears during Roslin’s death. She looked at me and said, “this is the most beautiful music i have ever heard.” You made my most cynical friend turn into a bubbling mess – bravo.

My gushing aside, I do have a question about the Season 4 album. Does “Among the Ruins” or “Funeral Pyre” include the bits before the commercial break where Leoben and Starbuck find her raptor wreckage? There are some great tweaks to their them in that sequence, including this faint cry of sorts (i still cant figure out if its a voice or instrument). Also, can the “Extras Disc” cover, please oh pretty please, be a shot of Adama’s back with “Frak Earth” spray-painted in front. Oh please.

Again – thanks for such memorable and inspiring work!

    Hi there,

Just wanted to know if there was a soundtrack to Razor?
I remember once a while back you said it would be included on this release?
    Any update?
    thanks,
    Pep

Bear said that he is going to release Razor/The Plan as a separate soundtrack later this year. There wasn’t enough room on 2 discs for all season 4 deserved, to put Razor on there too would be a crime against humanity.

    Bear!

    Just a couple of points,

    1. Thank you SO SO SO MUCH for including Roslin and Adama Reunited as I requested (because I’m sure it was all due to me ;) )!!! I’m a huge A/R nerd and that scene just killed me, thanks in no small part to what you did with their theme. I can’t wait to be able to listen to it at my leisure.

    2. I am unbelievably sad that the release has been pushed back to the 28th. I’ve been listening to the first three albums for the last year, including almost non-stop as I’ve been studying for the California Bar over the last couple of months. It’s fantastic study music, by the way. Anyhoo, I was so looking forward to having my shiny exciting new soundtrack to motivate me through my last week of studying before the exam begins…on the 28th :( I guess I’ll just have to look at it as my reward for making it through.

Thanks so much for your wonderful track selections!

    Hi again Bear,

Forgot to ask this in my previous post, is the Wander my Friends cue from Daybreak II where Bill is saying goodbye to Lee and Kara on Disc 2?

RobK… “Regarding the “extras” album. Is it something that’s a lock, or is it something that’s still just an idea floating around that may or may not happen?”

Well, in the music / tv / film business, nothing is ever a lock. It’s something that La La Land Records and I have talked generally about, but no, there’s no release date or anything decided yet. But, to answer your other question, yes, one of these days, all this material will get out there one way or the other. In all, I’ve written over 25 hours of original “Battlestar” music. I don’t think it’ll be a 25 disc set or anything, but it’ll be good… :)

GDeitz… “I’m curious. Are there going to be any quotes of Tigh’s theme on either discs?”

Yes, substantial quotes on both discs. His theme appears in “Sometimes a Great Notion” when the final cylon is revealed, and is quoted again in “Daybreak” when Tigh and the five are negotiating a cease fire with Cavil. There might even be a few more I’m forgetting about.

Joelzor… “Just wondering- are the track times on amazon correct? I haven’t seen them anywhere else, so I’m just making sure ;)”

I hadn’t seen the track times were up yet. I’ll go check them out…

… Yup. They look right to me.

Talking Head 80… “I had a party for the finale and one of my friends, who had never watched the show, was in tears during Roslin’s death. She looked at me and said, “this is the most beautiful music i have ever heard.””

    Wow. I’m quite honored!

“Does “Among the Ruins” or “Funeral Pyre” include the bits before the commercial break where Leoben and Starbuck find her raptor wreckage? There are some great tweaks to their them in that sequence, including this faint cry of sorts (i still cant figure out if its a voice or instrument).”

Yes, that moment is on the disc for sure. It’s one of my favorite cues in the entire series. It’s an instrument you’re hearing, by the way. A Chinese stringed instrument called an erhu.

Pep… “Just wanted to know if there was a soundtrack to Razor?”

Duckey already answered this, but I’ll confirm it. Yes, there WILL be a soundtrack to “Razor,” likely grouped on the same disc as the soundtrack to “The Plan.” Now, whether this album is part of a greater box set of unreleased cues or is a stand alone album, I’m not sure yet.

Lawyer Lady… “Anyhoo, I was so looking forward to having my shiny exciting new soundtrack to motivate me through my last week of studying before the exam begins…on the 28th :(”

Sorry! Best of luck with the exam! Just crank Season 1, 2 or 3… or maybe Caprica… for the studying and have Season 4 be your reward for passing with flying colors! :)

Tykell… “Forgot to ask this in my previous post, is the Wander my Friends cue from Daybreak II where Bill is saying goodbye to Lee and Kara on Disc 2?”

    Yup

    -Bear

What a wonderful gift you’ve given us, Mr. McCreary. First, to give such incredible power to an already powerful series that transcends pretty much all of what has made it to television, and in just a few weeks, the opportunity to own the music to continue to experience the spirit and heart of its passion in our own lives. I’ve not been this moved by ‘film’ music since John Williams score for the original Star Wars. Season 3 has rarely left any of my music playback devices. The only way this package could be any better at all would be to have a vinyl release with a full sized booklet :) I’m feeling like a kid about to be spoiled for Christmas as it is, though, so a giant, Battlestar-sized thanks from the midwest (where your concerts need to jump to some time).

    Hey Bear,

I was just rewatching BSG with someone special (think I got ‘em hooked already! haha)

Last night’s episode was “Colonial Day” from Season 1. In it I noticed some music that I had forgotten about and would like to know if you’re interested in putting it on the extras disc.

It was the jazz piece at the end celebration party. I noticed elements in there from existing jazz songs and I thought that was really cool. Would you consider releasing that on the extras?

Maybe title it “Battlestar Jazzica” hahaha

Oh and I mentioned to my fellow viewer that the muzak in the bathroom was created by the show’s composer and they laughed. :-)

Between that and the opera music from earlier, and everything else afterwards, you have truly proven yourself to be a ‘musical renaissance man’…

    -Scott

    Scott…

Yeah, Colonial Day had some really crazy music. The jazz pieces were kinda fun, actually, and I’ve always considered them contenders for release on an album one day. Back in Season 1, many fans were asking about them, but after a while they seemed to be forgotten. It’s good to know that people out there still catch them. :)

    -Bear

I must admit… I’d forgotten about this blog for a while. My friend and I were *this* close to getting to fly to California for the July concert, but alas, no such luck. It proved impossible to convince our parents to let two seventeen year olds fly from Texas and stay in California alone for a week. (If you ever, say… took the concerts to the Dallas/Fort Worth area… I’d certainly be there front row, though!)

But this blog entry has me completely ecstatic. Everyone else has already hit the highlights, but I’ll chip in and say that the release of this soundtrack will be the highlight of my July. I’m currently enduring a horrible job, and, cliched though it might sound, the thought of owning this makes it all worthwhile.

    “17. Kara Remembers”

Thats going to be amazing to hear over and over again. Just seeing it on screen is amazing but being able to just listen to it, I’m so excited and ready to have it for my own collection

The rest of the ablum surely will be amazing but had to comment on that one song lol

Talkative One… “Thats going to be amazing to hear over and over again. Just seeing it on screen is amazing but being able to just listen to it, I’m so excited and ready to have it for my own collection.”

Holy Frak. When you hear the version that’s on the record. Hot damn, it kicks ass. :)

We set up a forum on the new Battlestar Galactica Orchestra website for just such requests! Log in there and make your request! We’d love to play in TX!

    Bear.

You do realize this legally qualifies as torture, correct?

Demorian… “You do realize this legally qualifies as torture, correct?”

You think THAT’S torture? Try this on for size: Tomorrow afternoon, I’m getting my first box of Season 4 albums from the label! >:)

    I’m mean.

You guys will all be able to get them very soon, I promise!

    -Bear

Hey Bear, could you send us some copies? :D

More seriously, this is my first message here and I’d like to thank you for all the amazing job you’ve done on BSG, TSCC, Caprica and on your blog :)

The tracklist of the Season 4 soundtrack lokks awesome, but I wonder if the cue with the Final Four Theme (when the Cylons are plugging Anders in the CIC, in Daybreak) will be part of it. Hopefully, it will be on your “unreleased material” CD if it’s not on the sondrack :) .

Now, let’s hope Amazon won’t take too mush time to ship the CD’s in Europe, I’m very impatient to get my copy of the soundtrack :)
I’m checking LLL and Amazon each day hoping there will be some samples, I need my BSG fix :D

Once again, thank you for all Bear, and sorry for my poor English, it’s not my mother tongue :)

    Wayne

That’s it. I’m calling my lawyer.

I’m just kidding, I don’t have a lawyer. Two weeks and a few days… holy frak.

    Wayne6-

You and me both man! I hope they don’t take long to ship to me too. Also hope there’s a possibility of getting the bsg orch. web design freebies before the Season 4 disc to tide me over for a week or two.

Although, oddity: Amazon still has my order listed as shipping on July 21st. Doubtful about that though.

    Dear Mr.McCreary
I just want to thank you for the way you put in value your gift.Your music is really divine. My favourite album is BG Season 3…till the fourth will come :),I’m so eager to listen it!
I’m sure you’ll enchant us in the future same you did it till now.
    Always your fan,
    George

Very much looking forward to this release… just two more weeks!

Bear, are any of the very short cues featured on the Daybreak disc – in particular, there’s a wonderful bit of music during the flashback to a drunk Adama vomiting then looking up at the sky?

    Thanks!

Wayne6… “I wonder if the cue with the Final Four Theme (when the Cylons are plugging Anders in the CIC, in Daybreak) will be part of it.”

I honestly don’t remember. There were about 10 or 15 minutes worth of short little cues from “Daybreak” that didn’t make the cut (they’ll get released eventually). I know the Final Four theme when they UNPLUG him is on there. :)

matt.byng… “in particular, there’s a wonderful bit of music during the flashback to a drunk Adama vomiting then looking up at the sky?”

Now THAT I can confirm made the CD! It’s part of a larger suite…

I don’t know if anyone has asked this yet, or if it even needs asking, but here goes: Are the piano pieces from “Someone” on the album created with the samples from everyone’s favorite old piano?

Delta… “I don’t know if anyone has asked this yet, or if it even needs asking, but here goes: Are the piano pieces from “Someone” on the album created with the samples from everyone’s favorite old piano?”

You know, I was waiting for someone to ask this to and, believe it or not, you’re the first! Some of the pieces are done with the samples recorded on the BG set and others are live piano.

For example, Elegy is done with the samples, because the clangy and out of tune quality fit perfectly with the intimate feel. And besides, in the show, Slick was playing it on that piano on camera, so I wanted to preserve that emotion.

However, Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1 was supposed to be a professional recording of Kara’s father in a concert hall. So, I recorded that piece on a 9-foot Steinway at the glorious Warner Bros. scoring stage. The sound is epic and magnificent, fitting for the emotional arc that composition tells.

You’ll also hear the sampled piano from the set playing melodic statements of the Final Four theme in other cues from various episodes.

    -Bear

Oh I had just been going on the assumption all the piano pieces were going to use the samples, since you went to such pains to make the samples of the piano. But a glorious awesome Steinway will sound awesome too. Is this the same instrument Battlestar Sonatica was played on?

musicpaladin2007… “Is this the same instrument Battlestar Sonatica was played on?”

Yes, I recorded the Season 3 pianos there as well. It’s my favorite piano in town. It sounds so wide and gorgeous.

    -Bear

Will we be able to get the sheet music to Kara Remembers? or At least the piano part, because it sounds amazing.

I’ve been listening to the Season 4 soundtrack since Comic-Con, and I have to say, I love it.

Kara Remembers and Gaeta’s Lament are especially powerful.

    Thanks Bear !!!

P.S. Sorry I missed the signing, I was in Hall H finding out about Lost and Iron Man 2.

Will the soundtrack be released on iTunes? That’s the only way I’ll be able to get it. :’(

I love Gaeta’s Lament, you did a great job on it. It has to be one of my favorite songs ever!

Okami-luna… “Will the soundtrack be released on iTunes? That’s the only way I’ll be able to get it. :’(”

I’m hopeful that it will eventually, yes, but don’t hold your breath. iTunes and NBC Universal are like two siblings who don’t get along and it’s hard to get anything done on this.
