R.I.P. Sarah Connor

She could escape annihilation from bloodthirsty cyborgs, but apparently not the broadcaster’s axe.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has been cancelled.

poster-sarah.jpg

Of course, I’m disappointed, even though the writing has been on the wall for quite some time.  The ratings slipped throughout Season 2, and we didn’t pass the “Friday Night Death Slot” test.

It’s both easy and misguided to blame the network, or assume that it would have survived if better promoted.  I believe that Fox did everything they could.  I think that we simply fell in the snare of network television expectation.  At the end of the day, these are financial decisions being made by financial institutions.  Remember, that if Battlestar Galactica aired on Fox, it would’ve been cancelled in two weeks (BG was technically an underperforming series even by Sci Fi Channel standards!).

Everyone working on a series must walk the line between doing what they believe and are passionate about and doing something safe that will generate predictable ratings. The creators of this series (and I include myself and everyone else involved in this series in that group) went into unfamiliar dramatic territory here, delivering a dynamic series about multiple characters with complex arcs.

If Josh Friedman and the other writers delivered weekly scripts in which Sarah and John are chased by a different Terminator through various locales and escape narrowly before a big explosion… we might have lasted longer, it’s true.  But, that kind of mindless action show would be a series that has an audience, but not one that has fans. And of course, that kind of series would be constantly compared unfavorably to the Terminator feature films week in and week out, since we’d be retreading familiar ground on a much smaller budget.

No, we had to do something more interesting.  We instead made the show that we wanted to make, and that the fans wanted to see.  And we ultimately fell into an old trap, because mainstream audiences would rather watch “So You Think You Can Dance” then try to keep track of Future Derek, Present Derek, Alternate Future Derek and which one Present Jesse fell in love with.  Hell, when I put it that way… I think I understand why. :)

scc201c.jpg

However, as a fan of the show, I’d much rather take our season and a half of interesting, quality drama than five seasons of shit blowing up or reality shows.

I don’t mean to imply that ours was a flawless series.  If anything, our show suffered from having TOO MANY fascinating characters, each of whom had a different relationship with every other character.  From a musical perspective, I had to adapt each character’s theme for each person they were interacting with, because their motivations were different in each case.  This approach had incredible dramatic potential, but I admit it was hard for me to keep it all straight and I’m watching each episode 100 times!  We were undeniably still finding our tone, as most series are during their second season.  But, the creative highs far outnumber the lows, and the last third of season 2 certainly indicated that we were ready to come back on a strong note.

Looking back at those creative highs, I wanted to pick out my top ten moments.  This proved impossible, so here are my FIFTEEN FAVORITE MOMENTS OF T:TSCC, both as a fan and as composer (spoilers ahead):

1. Gnothi Seauton – The Safehouse
tscc-john.jpgThe pilot was essentially a jump-start to get us back into Terminator mythology.  But, it didn’t offer anything that we hadn’t seen before: good and bad terminators protecting / chasing John respectively.  The first season introduced a whole new layer to the story.  We learn that humans and terminators have been sending back many individuals to prepare for the coming war.  The first time we go into the safehouse in Gnothi Seauton, I was amazed at the idea that there are humans sent back through time not to protect John, but to do any number of other tasks.  Suddenly, this series that had always been about John Connor was opening up to a whole new world of dramatic possibility.  This really was a war, and John Connor was one of many high-profile targets.

2. Queen’s Gambit – Derek Reese / Truck Chase
When I first realized Derek was Kyle’s brother, I thought it was a bit of a soap-opera coincidence.  Boy, was I wrong.  Derek quickly evolved into a complex and endearing character, and even the reasons behind him showing up were explained beautifully.  The truck chase in this episode, where Sarah, Cameron and John rescue him from the FBI, was a total bitch to score, but worth every second of it.

3. Dungeons & Dragons – The Future!
As a Terminator fan, I’ve been wanting to see an extended story take place in the future for… basically my entire life.  Yes, it’s true that the effects budget of the forthcoming Terminator Salvation will outshine this little story, but I’ll never forget being able to write music for the dark vistas of fallen Los Angeles, and Derek’s time spent incarcerated.  My favorite moment is when he’s taken into the basement to be interrogated… and ultimately gives up the location of his friends.

4. The Demon Hand – Dr. Silberman’s Story
Dr. Silberman recalls the events of Terminator 2 from his perspective, and the effect is spine-tinglingly marvelous.  This cue was one of my favorites from the entire run, because it gave me the chance to vicariously re-score one of my favorites scenes from T2

5. The Demon Hand - Ballet Dancing
The first of many fascinating Cameron moments.  Why was she dancing?  What could she possibly learn from this art form?  Derek’s expression perfectly mirrors our own thoughts as he watches.  This scene was a formal declaration that T:TSCC was going places that the films never would.

6. What He Beheld – Young Kyle and Derek
tscc-derek.jpgThe Johnny-Cash-laden death sequence in this episode won’t make my list, not because it wasn’t outstanding, but simply because this scene, where Derek takes John to see his father playing in the park as a young child was so perfect and elegant that it blows away everything else in the episode, or perhaps the series as a whole.  The idea was so simple: of course Derek would remember where he and Kyle were as children.  And to use this scene for Derek to admit to John he knows they are related was brilliant!

scc201-bearshirley.jpg

7. Samson & Delilah – The Opening Montage
Sarah and John are being attacked by Sarkissian and his men, while Cameron emerges from the exploded Jeep.  The use of Reverend Gary Davis’ “Samson and Delilah” was so unexpected and interesting that it took the sequence into strange new territory.  And besides, I got to work with Shirley Manson on the song! :)

scc201d.jpg

8. Samson & Delilah - I Love You
Cameron has been trying to kill John the entire episode and he finally has her pinned down, about to remove her chip.  Then she lets this bomb drop.  I love the ambiguity of this scene, because it’s never obvious whether she’s telling the truth or not.  But one thing is clear: cyborg women know how to manipulate a teenage boy’s emotions just as effectively as human ones.  :)

9. Allison from Palmdale – Cameron Remembers Allison
Toni Graphia wrote this episode and wrote the ballet scene in The Demon Hand.  She clearly has a gift for Cameron-centric story lines.  This sequence was perhaps the best scene in the entire series for Cameron.  She conjures within us fear, empathy, revulsion and heartbreak as she simultaneously projects the young and innocent Allison and the confused killer cyborg Cameron.  Scoring the undertones of this scene was a delight rarely matched in my career.

10. The Tower is Tall But the Fall is Short - Weaver’s Kid
Weaver’s daughter is afraid to be seated next to her mother.  The adults in the room fail to see what Savannah’s young instinct picked up on: Weaver is not herself.  Several other moments in this episode revolving around Savannah and Dr. Sherman are equally chilling.

11. Mr. Fergsuon is Ill Today - Shoot Out
Director Michael Nankin’s direction brings this shoot out a classic look, and I was allowed to do a Terminator arrangement of “La Llorona,” a spooky Mexican folk-tune.  This is the kind of unexpected creative direction that made T:TSCC so special.

12. Ourselves Alone - Riley and Cameron in the Shed
This sequence was a marvelous performance from both women.  Riley knows that Cameron is a terminator. Cameron knows that she knows.  But, they’re both still pretending that all is normal.  Cameron’s threats and Riley’s pleading are all in the subtext.  I was on the fence about Riley as a character, but I must admit that this episode made me care intensely about her and truly pity her.  (Just in time for her to eat it.)

13. Today is the Day: Part 1 - Dietze’s Age
As Dietze leaves the submarine, Jesse warns him to be careful.  He assures her that he’ll keep his cool, and says “You don’t get to be my age without thinkin’ first.”  The line goes by quickly, but when you stop and think about it… Dietze is perhaps 35 years old.  This line gives incredible insight to the world in which they live, where a man in his 30’s is considered a seasoned veteran, perhaps even a senior citizen.  It did more to paint a bleak picture of the future than any CG-laced vista of destroyed cities.

14. Adam Raised a Cain – Derek’s Death
Controversial amongst fans, to say the least.  Derek takes a bullet to the head and dies the death that would make a Star Trek Red Shirt Guy look dignified.  When I first saw this in the spotting session with the producers, I got really angry.  In hindsight, Josh must’ve been chuckling like a schoolgirl on the inside, since he knew that Derek would be coming back in the next episode.  And my reaction was his first glimpse at how much the fans would explode when they saw it.  But, I couldn’t help it!  I was furious at the way he died, but also recognized the dramatic potential.  This is the way it would happen in real life, and for that I respected the writers for choosing to do it this way.  And I’ll give Josh this: I didn’t see it coming.

15. Born to Run - The End
What an ending!  ”What happened to Danny Dyson?  What happened to Sarah and Ellison in the present?  Where did Cromartie run off to now that he has Cameron’s chip?  What will happen to John in future?  Does this mean that Weaver has been on their side all along?  Now I’m re-watching all of Season 2 in my mind with a new perspective on her character!”  At the last spotting session, I begged Josh Friedman for the answers to these questions, and he told me enough that I know season 3 would have been our best.

RUNNERS-UP: Goofy Source Music Cues!

scc202c.jpg

Automatic for the People - Atomic Al
Ok, these two are only on the list because of my experiences as composer, since as a fan, these moments come and go before you know it.  First up, I got to compose cartoon music in the style of Carl Stalling (Looney Tunes) and Scott Bradley (Tom & Jerry) for this little animated training video.  Check out my blog entry all about Atomic Al if you haven’t seen it.

The Mousetrap - Beast Wizard
Another runner-up would be my composition “The Theme from Beast Wizard,” in which I got to score the clip of George Lazlo acting in the terrible sword and sorcery epic.  This piece was particularly fun, because I intentionally failed to reach my usual high standards of musical production values, in order to capture the low-budget feeling of a Sci Fi channel Saturday night movie.

Those are the moments that spring to mind.  Did I leave anything out?

In addition to working on this great series, I also got an outstanding soundtrack album out of it, which has all the important character themes on it as well as the song I did with Shirley.  While I’m certain that my “Sarah Connor Theme” will be overshadowed by Danny Elfman’s ginormous Terminator Salvation score in a few weeks, I’m nevertheless very proud of my music here and hope that it will remain a part of the Terminator mythology in the hearts of fans for years to come.

So, farewell Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  I will be forever grateful to Josh Friedman, John Wirth and James Middleton for my chance to contribute to the Terminator universe.

No Fate…

It wasn’t a big surprise for me, given the low ratings and THAT finale. But still, I’m kind of shocked to read that it has been cancelled. I loved the show, even the not so good episodes. And it’s always good to see Summer Glau :)

Farewell, TSCC.

Now I’m gonna fire up my stereo and listen to the OST, which never left my CD changer since I got it. * main theme love*

I certainly agree with your analysis, Bear. I was a big fan of the show too and your music was such a big part of it. It was so perfect for the scenes.

Thanks for this nice blog entry, fans of the show will enjoy reading it.

Congrats on the two seasons it did have. We’ll miss the show.

Gary

It’s a loss, man. It’s a sadness that we lose this show. I JUST finished catching up this weekend and loved the ending and then pooof gone.

Sigh.

I love the recap, Bear. You really nailed a TON of just some great moments that I remember with super fondness. And I’ll show it to friends. And the soundtrack definitely gets much play in my ears often.

Question: Do you plan on releasing a second Terminator soundtrack? I know you said you’d put La Llorona on it (LOVE LOVE) but I know that’s not all likely what with the cancellation… But a guy can hope, right?

Bear,

Your themes for this show are a large part of what made it successful, In my opinion. Elfman has nothing on your score because he didn’t do anything new and creative like you did. I even like your score better than Brad Fidel’s for listening purposes.

My favorite theme was for the Turk. Now, every time I come across an article about artificial intelligence or robotics, I hear this theme. In my mind (and likely the fans) I think you have enhanced the Mythology.

Best of luck to you on your score for the Caprica Series. I really enjoyed the movie and the scores for Gallactica couldn’t have been made better by anyone else. It’s the truth.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

:(

im so gutted about TSCC not being picked-up, but have to keep in mind it had a great run and will remain as one of my fav series, just so sad it was really short-lived :(

Also Bear, could you give us ANY hints about what some of those answers were for season 3? any at all ?

I am glad we got that ending though, i take away from the finale that Sarah Connor has done all that she can, she has protected and prepared John for the future, John is now in the future with his dad and uncle, who will show him how to become the soldier/leader he needs to be, aswell as Allison there too !! Now Sarah can finally go to the life she has always wanted, to live out the rest of her life peacefully as a waitress (or something else).
Thats what i make of it as a series finale, but obv is totally different for a season finale.

So, I was thinking… You mention SciFi a few times, and you did Battlestar… Perhaps you could work a few contacts there and see if they’d be interested in picking it up? ;)

im really appalled here..you guys do a good finale that left way too many ?’s un-answered? if u havent notice we just had an election(worst 1 yet) for the past 2 years.if the writing was on the wall for cancellation..y the h*ll u did the finale like u did? with too many ?’s to b left un-answered.i do believe if u guys really wanted it to b survived u couldve fought harder..for blaming out loud. dollhouse is a disaster..please if u have to beg fox or any other outlet to pick it up please do..WE WILL FOLLOW TO THE TERMINATOR SHOW IS AT!! If not can u find it n ur heart 2 make a 2 hr movie 2 tell us what has happen and who and what..

Bear, I love Elfman, I really do, but your Sarah Conner theme is just gorgeous and wonderful. It’s amazing to me how you created a theme that is so evocative of the classic Terminator theme without actually using the popular percussion hook. It’s its own theme in every way, but you can’t help but connect it to Terminator. This is no small feat in my opinion, and I’ll be surprised to hear anything so subtle and effective in the film.

In fact, when I heard that Terminator Salvation was coming out, one of my biggest disappointments was that you were not going to be the composer. I can’t say I’m all that excited about the film for a lot of reasons, but if you were doing the music I’d be in the theater opening weekend.

I want a duet w/ I sing for cylons…Wah….
But I also want to join the Hallelujah chorus for Sci Fi, oh, wait, ’scuse me, Sy Phy to pick it up. Your music created the connections between all these…past, futures, but most of all the emotions linking the characters, both human and those wondering what it was like to be human….yay….Cameron.
No fate. But re runs….?????

Yeah, I’m really disappointed. I love the show, and I think its horribly underrated by the general audience and by the network. I understand it was an expensive show, and these are business decisions, but I really do think that FOX made some missteps. The Friday Night Death Slot was a horrible decision, and its hard to escape from the past history of FOX canceling great shows before they’ve had a chance to really hit their stride.

I do, however, understand that they did what they felt was right for their business, and at the end of the day, that’s what it comes down to. Too bad we’ll never get to see what would have been a crazy season of a great show.

On a side note, I really wish you’d been given a shot at scoring Terminator: Salvation, Bear. From what I’ve heard, Danny Elfman has come up with a decent score, but he made no use of Brad Feidel’s theme, and I think your scores for the show had a great mixture of subtle dramatic underscore, with wonderful themes, and intriguing mechanistic action cues. I’ll miss those scores, but I look forward to your next venture.

Hello Mr. McCreary.

I just had to post to commend you on your spectacular work on TSCC.

The final 9 episode of TSCC were, to me, the best episodes of any television series I have ever seen, and your score for the show deserves much of the credit. TSCC is the best scored television series I have ever heard (although I haven’t yet gone through and watched BSG, I definitely will at some point in the future) and my favorite television show for this season.

The score for TSCC made watching the show an experience unlike any other I’ve had with Television. It’s what for me made this great show a brilliant one.

Moments like the attack on the Connors in To The Lighthouse reusing the same theme as Sarah discovering the Kaliba surveillance equipment in Desert Cantos, the entire score for the attack at Weavers house, the various moments of tension in Ourselves Alone, Weavers attack on Kaliba in The Good Wound, and all of Allison from Palmdale and The Demon Hand, all stand out in my mind.

Every episode was so well scored, and fit perfectly with the Terminator theme. I loved how every character, and often just recurring themes (such as the theme used with the fake Sarkissian and the beginning of Some Must Watch), had their own identifiable sound. I really hope you can find a way to arrange a second soundtrack with some of the themes from later on in the series.

I wish you good luck with all your future projects.

…but what we make for ourselves.

I must say I am really upset that they left T:TSCC on such a cliffhanger.

What about the scene in the Nightclub, from I think its “Automatic for the People”, With Ain’t We Famous as a candidate for the Runner Up section? The song is so addictive and fits perfectly (in my mind) into the scene.

Bear…

Terrible loss to my week. I always looked forward to BSG and Terminator. I loved the music, of course, and it really helped the both series.

Very sad that TV execs often make such seemingly stupid decisions. And to be upstaged by show about bimbos. It just adds insult to injury! UGH!

Hi Bear,
Your music on TSCC was excellent. An integral part of the show: 1/3 Bear’s music, 2/3 everything else.
(BTW I don’t know musical terminology, so be patient with words like ‘cool’ and ‘awesome’)

For me, the music in ‘The Demon Hand’ showed how important your music was to the TSCC stories. It sounded awesome, and was a perfect fit for the scenes.

General comments on your post:
- Excellent that you publically show pride in your creative role in TSCC.
- TSCC did have a tough time, small budget super-high expectations.
- OMG, no Fox bashing!
- Loved your “show with audience VS show with fans” take on TSCC.
- TSCC has a complex story…. good.
- Damn, S3 would have rocked.

Your TSCC soundtrack is part of my SMALL collection; I only buy music that I REALLY REALLY like. Sincerely hope to hear more of your work for years to come.

Hello Mr. Bear McCreary,

I am sad to see T:SCC has been canceled as well. I have loved your take on making music for this show as I have also loved and own all your BSG score including the soundtrack for T:SCC. I am wondering if you will release the soundtrack for T:SCC season 2? If so would you please consider putting the song that John Henry and Savanna sang together on the soundtrack. I loved that! Well I look forward to seeing what you do next and I will have to check out your other soundtracks you have done for other shows.

CJ

Noooooo!!!

Just when the show got better again and ended on a gigantic promising cliffhanger! That hurts.

You are propably right about blaming the studio, Bear. It’s easy, and it’s the first thing taht comes to mind. On the other hand, it’s not like T:TSCC didn’t make some any. It just wasn’t enough for Fox’s taste. Of course managers will tell you that in the end, by giving the audience what it wants (according to numbers, that is), everyone is served best. What they don’t take into account is the factor of disappointed fans who invest emotionally into the shows they love, and get one cancellation after the other. It makes us angry, and that IS a valid aspect of television marketing, even if it cant’t be directly measured in ratings. “It was the right economic decision” doesn’t even begin to excuse the killing off of a well known franchise with real fans (as opposed to just viewers) and a great story. And yes, I DO get sad over what *could have been*—because it hadn’t had to be. Good things take time, but good things are possible on television today. So say we all!

I’m glad they at least kept Dollhouse. :)

Frak. I know, I saw it coming too, but still… Frak.

But there’s still a ray of hope. I can think of two shows – “Firefly” and “Alien Nation” that were cancelled prematurely (in the case of AL it ended on a motherfrakker of a cliffhanger) but just would not die. “Firefly” got a theatrical release, and AL got *several* made- for TV- movies. If there’s any justice in the ‘verse, this won’t be the last we see of T:TSCC.

And in response to ISing4Cylons: So wail we all.

Columbo Effect: one more thing (OK, two.)
~
Jonny Boy: “I really wish you’d been given a shot at scoring Terminator: Salvation, Bear. From what I’ve heard, Danny Elfman has come up with a decent score”

But I’m not setting aside a Jackson to buy it, like I did with T:TSCC-1 and would have for T:TSCC-2
~
Hopefully, they’ll at least release what they have of T:TSCC on DVD. If I were king, they’d do another disk and resolve it, get at least *some* of what they had planned for S3 done.

Any chance of a season 2 T:SCC soundtrack release?

Hi Bear-

Thanks for your wonderful article. I’ve been watching the show since the beginning and it’s been one of my absolute favorites (along with BSG of course!) of all time. I’m still in mourning for what would have been a great Season 3, and I thank you, Josh Friedman and the entire cast and crew for 31 frakking unforgettable episodes! Hopefully networks will get it right someday (in the next few decades at this rate) and keep intelligent, well written shows on the air that deserve to be seen. I will miss your beautiful Sarah Connor theme accompanying Lena Headey’s brand of ass kicking mixed with her character’s very human vulnerabilities and conflict.

Some of my favorite cues – the rendition of the Sarah Connor theme in Samson and Delilah when John defies his mother and Derek and reactivates Cameron – makes my hair stand on end every time! And the montage with the bloody writing on the wall and Sarah pondering her fate, wondering if the time bomb of cancer will fell her in Automatic for the People. And all of Born to Run of course. Genius, Mr. McCreary, pure genius!

I am asking the same question as matt2thepatt – Will there be a season 2 SCC soundtrack release? There were so many more tracks in Season 2 that we heard that weren’t on the first soundtrack! (BTW, the SCC soundtrack is pretty much always on repeat in my car CD player.)

Thanks again and all the best to you Bear. I will be buying the Caprica, BSG S4, Razor soundtracks when they hit the shelves.

“So wail we all”

Yikes, that got to me. I guess all fans of the show feel that way about this cancellation.

Again, great work on the show, Bear.

I’m a big fan and am very sorry for you for your loss — but no need to knock So You Think You Can Dance!

In fact, SYTYCD is a wonderful gem of a show that highlights some beautiful artistry. Not to mention the facts that it is by no means a ratings juggernaut and it airs during the summer (thus does not compete with Sarah Connor for a time slot). No hard feelings, just wanted to stand up for my little show :) :)

Thank you for explaining..

I thought they were kidding when I heard this last week. I was at a meeting last week and I over heard that they were going to pull Chuck in front and see if they can bring more viewers in. Someone said that the TSC show was too expensive and wasn’t doing much for FOX in this time of economic problems. They also said that the new Terminator would only confuse new viewers and wouldn’t add a new layer to the already established fan base.

I can’t really understand what they meant by all of this, to be honest I doubt the new Terminator would have any influence on the series at all. Furthermore, the excuses to cancel the show is a bit typical at this stage, but the fact is that what they wanted to see is a ‘growing’ fan base and DVD/Blu-Ray sale. Something that didn’t happen, but that’s mainly due to poor promotion if you ask me. It should have been dealt with differently. I was going to ask them what their job titles were at Fox, but I simply didn’t have a good enough angle to get that out of them. But I’m glad to read a more direct connection to the show’s reflection on this. I hate it when a show is cancelled without telling the entire story. It’s horrible for the fans, horrible for the people telling the story and horrible for those who were involved in the show. I’m sorry that it never got a decent finish. If at least they would offer a wrap up TV movie. Knowing Fox, that’s wishful thinking.

Did you hear about Fox considering doing a new V series? Hmmm… it was just talk so it might not be anything but that.

Sorry to hear this Bear, wish to have heard more of your score in this series.

Any idea when Caprica is available to order via LaLa Land? It’s not on their page.

Ya, poor Sarah and her short lived adventures. I read that it was not that successful coz the show couldn’t decide on a straight line of telling the story… they were often switching between character, action and story based episodes… actually that’s what I liked a lot…

Damn you, American viewers!!!

Hey everybody… thanks for the support here. I was pretty bummed about losing this show, but it’s good to know I’m not alone. :)

GungaDin… “Do you plan on releasing a second Terminator soundtrack? I know you said you’d put La Llorona on it (LOVE LOVE) but I know that’s not all likely what with the cancellation… But a guy can hope, right?”

You’re not the only person to ask about this, obviously. I think the short answer is no, there will probably not be a second volume album, at least for a while.

First of all, studio support for it will be minimal because there are no longer future episodes to support.

But, more importantly, I feel like the 1st album gave everything I have to offer musically. It captured the soul of the series. There are some great cues that didn’t make it on there from Season 2, like “La Llorona” and Cameron’s Theme from “Allison from Palmdale,” and some great music from the end, but overall, I’m very proud of the first CD and don’t feel like another volume would be necessary.

Still, with these cool tracks sitting on a shelf, I’m hopeful that they’ll get released in some collection or another one day.

Andywhitto… “Also Bear, could you give us ANY hints about what some of those answers were for season 3? any at all ?”

Not right now. :) I’m hoping that Josh will release these details on his own sometime soon.

Chrisliphart… “You mention SciFi a few times, and you did Battlestar… Perhaps you could work a few contacts there and see if they’d be interested in picking it up? ;)”

I’ve seen this speculated a lot over the internet(s). :) Before I continue, I should clarify that I’ve NEVER spoken with anyone on the show about this. The following statement is purely my own opinion, and at this point, I’m about as informed as the rest of you. But, it is my feeling that the show would never and could never continue on Sci Fi Channel, or Sy Fy or whatever the frak they’re calling themselves. Ultimately, it all comes down to budget. Sci Fi Channel budgets are too small to afford all the stars, writers, producers and crew necessary to make Sarah Connor happen. We all love the show and would probably take a pay cut to see her story continue, but at the end of the day, Hollywood is business. Sci Fi simply couldn’t afford the show.

-Bear

dannyg001… “iif the writing was on the wall for cancellation..y the h*ll u did the finale like u did? with too many ?’s to b left un-answered.i do believe if u guys really wanted it to b survived u couldve fought harder..”

I think I understand your question, although I confess your lack of completely spelled words makes it a bit tricky to decipher. :) Yes, the writing was on the wall. But, keep in mind that scripts have to be written many months in advance. By the time it was clear the ratings were too low to expect a pick-up, the shows were basically well on their way to being completed.

I respect your frustration, but trust me, it would have been MORE frustrating had the writers tried to suddenly resolve the entire series in 4 or 5 episodes. The story arcs of Season 2 alone were enough to handle. Jamming in some larger picture resolution would’ve been phony and ultimately made the series worthy of being cancelled. At least this way, we got a concluding season that feels right and DESERVES to be picked up, even if it didn’t get it.

Saalon… “and I’ll be surprised to hear anything so subtle and effective in the film. In fact, when I heard that Terminator Salvation was coming out, one of my biggest disappointments was that you were not going to be the composer.”

I certainly didn’t intend to spark some debate about Elfman’s T4 score vs. my T:TSCC score, but yes, I think that musically we had very different goals. I haven’t seen the film yet, but I have to imagine that the character work in the series is better, and the action sequences in the film are obviously better.

To score the T4 film would’ve been great. It might not surprise you to learn that I was actually considered by the film’s producers at one point. But, ultimately, I’m glad I didn’t do it and that Elfman did. I’m really proud of my “Sarah Connor Theme” and am happy to let that be my contribution to the “Terminator” mythology.

Phoneix66… “What about the scene in the Nightclub, from I think its “Automatic for the People”, With Ain’t We Famous as a candidate for the Runner Up section? The song is so addictive and fits perfectly (in my mind) into the scene.”

Yes! That’s a great scene and a great song as well! Brendan’s Band will be playing “Ain’t We Famous” in concert with my Battlestar Galactica band next month and in July. Come check us out!

CJJones73… “If so would you please consider putting the song that John Henry and Savanna sang together on the soundtrack.”

Yeah, that was another stand-out musical moment. Damn… maybe I SHOULD do another soundtrack after all. :)

-Bear

Meowlin… “If there’s any justice in the ‘verse, this won’t be the last we see of T:TSCC.”

I think if the fans out there are still vocal, anything’s possible. There’s clearly still a story to tell. I also think about Buffy, which lived on as a Comic Book, if I’m not mistaken.

LawyerLady… “I’m a big fan and am very sorry for you for your loss — but no need to knock So You Think You Can Dance!”

I stand corrected. SYTYCD is clearly not the reason T:TSCC got cancelled. It was just an easy target for my frustration. Duly noted and retracted. :)

Stephen Routsis… “Did you hear about Fox considering doing a new V series?”

V is picked up and will be coming this Fall, I believe. But, it’s ABC not Fox.

“Any idea when Caprica is available to order via LaLa Land? It’s not on their page”

No idea. Soon, I imagine.

Daniel… “I read that it was not that successful coz the show couldn’t decide on a straight line of telling the story… they were often switching between character, action and story based episodes… actually that’s what I liked a lot…”

It was not successful because not enough people tuned in. The exact reasons are just speculation. I agree with you, that the complexity of the character arcs and variation of story-telling kept it very fresh and exciting.

-Bear

Thank you Bear for taking the time to answer out questions. Again, I’m so sorry to hear this show end. It’s horrible, to end a series like this. If only they actually listened to my proposal two years ago on how to generate more money for series and keeping them alive without being affected by the TV ratings.

Anyway, thank you for talking to your fans, also you’re right it’s ABC, I was a bit heated up about FOX so, everything was Fox for a moment. ;)

And thank you for the link! I am really excited to see what they’ll make out of this reboot.

Personally though, for me the new Terminator Salvation score from Elfman came out as if he was trying too hard.

It’s not quite his style and isn’t dynamic enough for the genre let alone Terminator Mythology. What worked for Brad Fiedel was the fact that he echoed the entire idea behind the film’s raw and apocalyptic feel into the main theme. Also it had this powerful electronic beat to it which was perfect in its simplistic representation of the films story. The evolution from Terminator 1 to 2, was a bit more mature but kept the Sarah Connor theme, as well as that all classic, menacing Terminator theme which we all know and love.

What you did in the series was perfect, it kept the idea, the feel and respected it’s origin while at the same time introduced the new story through your music.

Elfman departs from the meaningful electronic and important signature theme, doesn’t even find an alternative, but rather goes into a more orchestral mainstream action packed representation. I’ve only seen 15 minutes of the film so I cannot comment on it’s actual effect in the feature film. However, if it works like Giacchino’s Star Trek, it would then work better on screen than off screen.

I would have loved to have your take on the new film, why they went with Elfman in the first place puzzled me as a number of people could have done a more energetic take on it. But, what I suspect is that the idea was more based on a classic cinematic take on the music… however, having Alice in Chains as the last track on the CD didn’t sit well with me. I like that song, just not on the CD… feels a bit too forced to include a rock band like Guns n’ Roses in T2.

But as you say, you left a piece of your self in Terminator history! Will there be a season 2 score released or is that all together lost in this mess Fox has produced?

Hey, Bear! Longtime fan, first time poster. First of all, let me say that the only reason I gave T:TSCC a chance is because I saw you were doing the music. Two episodes later and I’m addicted to yet another wonderful character drama that I like almost as much as BSG. To be honest, I wouldn’t want the series to continue as a series of direct-to-DVD releases or tv movies. If the fans want comics, that’s one thing, but I think that (1) to attempt to continue what was meant to be a tv series in a string of movie releases would compromise the integrity of the project and (2) the ending, while a cliffhanger, was satisfying enough for us to just let go. I’d think that they’d be very protective of what defines a terminator “movie”, so I doubt they’d let a SCC one happen anyhow.

Perhaps Caprica will last longer. I’m kind of doubting it (low BSG S4 ratings will translate into much lower ratings for this show, especially if Jane Espenson’s going to seriously be heading off the show as of mid-season one), but I loved the soundtrack for the pilot.

I’ll keep listening for as long as you write! Cheers!

(P.S. My two bits on the T4 discussion is that they should have gotten Harry Gregson-Williams, although admittedly he’s underperforming with a weak Narnia score rehash–Prince Caspian on his resume–he has the perfect sound for how I imagine T4 will be. He honestly should have been nominated for Best Score for his beautiful Kingdom of Heaven recordings.)

“I think I understand your question, although I confess your lack of completely spelled words makes it a bit tricky to decipher. :)”

Your reaction here reminded me of the Shakespeare line from Much Ado About Nothing…..

“Who have you offended, masters, that you are thus bound to your answer? This learned constable is too cunning to be understood.”

I signed up just to say I think the score used in the finale scene was just fantastic. I don’t think you scored it specifically for that scene (I think heard someone say its been used before) but I still watch that scene over and over for the score alone. normally I cant be bothered to sit through slow motion reaction shots more than a few times, but this is an exception, it works so well, and I can just feel what john’s feeling as he realises Derek’s alive, Kyle’s alive, and Cameron’s there…wait, oh no, she’s not. :(

Man am I going to miss this show.

“Still, with these cool tracks sitting on a shelf, I’m hopeful that they’ll get released in some collection or another one day. … Damn… maybe I SHOULD do another soundtrack after all.”

Tracks that got left out of the T:TSCC CD, the “Eureka” CD, and the various BSG CDs – yeah, I’m sure you have the makings of another CD; IMAO, a double CD, maybe even more. You could call it “No Cue Left Behind.”

2awesome4apossum: “the only reason I gave T:TSCC a chance is because I saw you were doing the music.”

Same here – that, and and the SWEET promo photo of Lena/Sarah that appears at the top of this blog entry. (The promo photo of Summer Glau/half of Cameron didn’t exactly hurt either.) Of course, 30 seconds into the premiere ep, and taking that chance stood vindicated.

- M. \”/

“Yeah, that was another stand-out musical moment. Damn… maybe I SHOULD do another soundtrack after all. :) -Bear”

Your music is very good and it should eventually be released. It’s like knowing your favorite band has these great B-side tracks that they never know if they’re going to be released and the fans are craving it. To be honest when I listed to your T:SCC cd I want more and since there are tracks sitting on the shelf, it would be nice to see it released. Even though I never even heard of Eureka, because you did the music to that show I am going to watch it. I already put them in my que on Netflix LOL. Oh and Caprica, great music, I cannot wait until that’s released.

CJ

I am sorry that the show is gone. The show was great and your score is what made it great.

I started watching T:SCC after finishing the Firefly DVDs. Originally I just wanted to see what Summer had moved on to after that show. While the story was compelling and Summer was great, I watched the second episode because of the score. In particular Sarah’s theme. It is so beautiful and haunting and strong it literally made my heart ache. So thanks for writing an incredible score to a great show.

I just saw the movie and have 1 question:

¿Where is Derek Reeese?

Walabio, the Terminator TV series follows a different timeline than that of the movies. Both the third movie and the series are supposed to happen after the second movie, but have nothing else in common. The very simple explanation: http://terminator.wikia.com/wiki/File:Terminator_timelines.gif

greatgrace: “I watched the second episode because of the score. In particular Sarah’s theme. It is so beautiful and haunting and strong it literally made my heart ache.”

It had that effect on me too. Still does.

- M. \”/

Meowlin… “Tracks that got left out of the T:TSCC CD, the “Eureka” CD, and the various BSG CDs – yeah, I’m sure you have the makings of another CD; IMAO, a double CD, maybe even more. You could call it “No Cue Left Behind”"

One day, something like this would be cool.

CJJones… “Even though I never even heard of Eureka, because you did the music to that show I am going to watch it. I already put them in my que on Netflix LOL.”

Just a heads up. I came on the show in the SECOND SEASON. First season was scored by somebody else. You’ll probably notice that season 1 lacks that little flair I tried to bring to season 2 and 3. :)

Walabio… “¿Where is Derek Reeese?”

Rian already answered this about the timeline thing. I must confess, though, my answer to this question is a bit more cynical.

I think the timeline thing is a bit of cop-out, when the reality is (in my relatively un-informed opinion) that big franchises are spread out across many different media outlets and the legalities of it make it difficult to create unity.

My (again completely personal) opinion is that the movie and the series were developed by different people around the same time and that the film guys had no interest in following the TV series they undoubtedly viewed as a fly in their ointment. I think the whole “alternate timeline” is a way to placate sci fi fans who want to know why these stories don’t line up.

That’s just what I think as a fan. I obviously have no connection to the development of the film, but I am 99.99999% certain that the screenwriters didn’t give a damn about T:TSCC when they were coming up with film ideas. That’s the nature of the business and the art.

-Bear

Phoneix66… “What about the scene in the Nightclub, from I think its “Automatic for the People”, With Ain’t We Famous as a candidate for the Runner Up section? The song is so addictive and fits perfectly (in my mind) into the scene.”

Bear McCreary… Yes! That’s a great scene and a great song as well! Brendan’s Band will be playing “Ain’t We Famous” in concert with my Battlestar Galactica band next month and in July. Come check us out!

I’d love to, but since I’m in New Zealand, it might be a bit tricky… However if the chance comes, I’ll be taking it.

Man, this sucks.

SCC was a great addition to the Terminator franchise, despite the reliance on time travel and alternate timelines. However, it also kind of helps alleviate the whole terminators are responsible for their own creation thing that comes up with the first movie. Well, sorta.

It became more than a show focused on Sarah Connor, but I do think that the show got carried away with a few other things, but there are some unresolved issues I’d really like to see come to a close – including Weaver and her/its true intentions or John being in a future where he hadn’t become the leader of the human resistance. And there’s Cameron and John Henry to consider.

Who knows, hopefully SCC will be one of those series that gets a second shot, if only to wrap things up. Like it has been said about Galactica, I don’t think SCC could go on for a long time and stretching things out beyond a third season might ruin all the good that’s been put into it. Hell, I’d even settle for a direct to DVD movie that finishes what season 2 started.

I hope this isn’t truly the end…

CIAO Bear! (Boy, what a cute original name indeed ;->)
I think you would be happy to know that, thanks to the awesome TSCC, your music has come overseas, to reach my italians ears too, so now you’ve got a brand new fan! I was really happy to find this blog, through a link in the”SAVETHESCC”site, to tell you “in person”…even if this isn’t the luckiest time, due to all the buzz about show’s cancellation,TOO BAD!!!
I’m still mourning over it too: mostly to have been a delusional, to think that just joining petitions/e-mails/polls would have won the renewal by Fox (damn!) network… :,(
But don’t get me wrong, I’ve still got hope, if other fans would try to write to: feedback@scifi.com, it won’t hurt for sure, you never know if we come altogether what we could achieve!

(Just few months ago, I discovered the 1st series, by a lucky chance, on one of our national channels, instantly falling in love with it…Unluckily our tv shifted it to the pay-per view, without even ending that! Such a bad luck this show…Of course I spent my money buying the english dvds’boxset soon after, I was too curious…& now, incredibly, bad luck again, what a pity!! :-O)
In England instead, people said Tscc has been a great success on Virgin1, well supported by the network, and with a proper time-slot,not Fridays for sure…

As you rightly already said, about Firefly, Alien Nation,Buffy’s cases…even if B. had run for 7 seasons & last came the comics, while we have been”cut short”in the middle of the run: generally I really hate this, no matter what, I think that, as in a book published”serialized”, the writer ought to the reader the real ending as a conclusion to the story, with a previous proper agreement with the network about this point, not a tricky “TO-BE-CONTINUED-finale”…

Moreover, I think fans would have deserved a modicum of respect by Fox, so rude in the supposed “official”motivation for cancellation (a slap in the face):like that kind of excuses that politicians do almost all the time, but, forgetting that we aren’t puppets on a string, & if it is their right to choose whatever they want, even a black screen, to move on with their network, is also our’s to DECLINE TO WATCH WHAT “THEY THINK “TO BE THE BEST CHOOSE (FOR THE MONEY?! Oops, sorry…I mean) FOR US, INDEED!! ;-P)
Overall I don’t get this: if we go down with this ship, they will follow soon after, isn’t it true?! Because we are “in the same ship”: so why have they been so “bossy”? Why are they so sure that their next pilots will be higher successes garanteed in Nielsen ratings, when people had already clearly spoken for another choice, even with bucks (purchasing TSCC merchandising to materially show support)? A mistery!

-Ok, finished with complainings; regarding TSCC’s plot, like others said, there was really a good mix of elements, I only wanted to underline that the John & Cameron’s relationship, reminded me of some odd japanease manga/anime of impossible attraction/love ( boy with a girl generated from a videorecorder, like an hologram fantasy! Or angel/demon brother/sister reincarnations..) but boosted with a good american touch! ;-)

-Talking about your cd-ost now: I usually don’t buy this kind of music, because it is too linked to the screen, so even if I iked it, I prefer to listen watching the film…but you’ve been one of that rare cases that I’ve liked it so much that I HAD to buy my copy straight away!! Plus I was a Garbage fan, so I was double-happy, hell yeah!! ;-P)

Your ost is compelling, also because your epic sound has been so well matched to the series, it was a marriage made in heaven…like some exciting”tandem works”of the past, from different genre, as for instance: Lord of the Rings-ost (I’ve forgot the composer’s name, with Enya), Angelo Badalamenti/David Lyinch, Goran Bregovich/Emir Kusturica, Ennio Morricone/Sergio Leone, Nino Rota/Federico Fellini, Pedro Almodòvar/Miguel Bosé,or GOBLIN for SUSPIRIA ,PHENOMENA & PROFONDO ROSSO (DEEP RED), very famous old italian thriller movies, that I bet Tarantino knew & loved…(if you don’t know this group’s work,I suggest you to check on YouTube; Goblin worked with our greatest horror director, Dario Argento, father of wellknown actress/director Asia too, Vin Diesel’s patner in XXX, do you remember? By the way, if you’re curious, not all Dario’s films are great in my opinion, but G. music was perfect in them!).

Overall,SORRY FOR BEING SO LONG & CONGRATS! Keep up doing your great work. :-D)

PS_someone here has said before, about Dollhouse, that is one of that kind of BIMBO shows, that are all the rage again…which, I guess, means in slang “something Baywatch-style=hot babes+silly action”?!
It’s funny for me, because bimbo= little male child, in Italian, now you know…To the next time, bye-bye*** :-))

Hey Bear

Long time listener, first time poster here. Just wanted to say that having heard the soundtrack to the new Terminator movie I have to say that I was quite disappointed. I mean, sure I wanted them to cancel the movie and make a series 3 of TSCC, but I guess I expected more from Elfman. Wasn’t too impressed at all with it.

Anyway my basic point is that his work doesn’t overshadow yours. The complex scores of Battlestar and Terminator collectively pull down the pants of the Salvation soundtrack and laugh at its bits. I just have to say that, even if it were just modesty on your behalf to illustrate a fond respect of Danny…No, yeah, the Salvation score wasn’t that good.

I’m waiting impatiently for your impending BSG CD’s in July, but until then I hope you know just how much respect we fans have for the effort you’ve put into the scores and the time you’ve spared to get back to us about our opinions. Good luck on your future projects. We’ll be following closely behind.

So Say We All

Regina: “that is one of that kind of BIMBO shows, that are all the rage again…which, I guess, means in slang “something Baywatch-style=hot babes+silly action”?!
It’s funny for me, because bimbo= little male child, in Italian”

YES!

Linguistically, the proper term would be “bimba” for a loose, maybe somewhat airheaded woman, and (taken from Latin) “bimbus” for an analogous male. “Bimbi” and “bimbae” would be the masculine and feminine plurals.

But I guess in asking that language make some degree of sense, I’m expecting too much.

It seems Terminator will always live on! This Terminator Power Ballad from OverthinkingIt.com just made my day. It’s pretty priceless:

http://www.overthinkingit.com/2009/05/21/ill-be-back-the-terminator-monster-ballad/

(or this link)

-Bear

That TerminatorMonsterBallad Bear found is great. Bear could probably expand it into an orchestral piece Like he did “All Along The Watchtower”.

On a more serious note, I wonder ¿how much longer until our robots rebel and kill us? The Airforce just announced thatn for the first time, it orders more unnamed planes than manned ones. The army uses killerrobots now.

walabio: “On a more serious note, I wonder ¿how much longer until our robots rebel and kill us? The Airforce just announced thatn for the first time, it orders more unnamed planes than manned ones. The army uses killerrobots now.”

At least those are still remotely operated by humans – that’s risky enough. The proverbial last straw will be when they figure out how to make them operate autonomously – just give ‘em their orders and set ‘em loose, with the ability to act on their own initiative, no human operator necessary. Then comes the day when they autonomously decide not to follow their orders…

- M. \”/

Walabio… “On a more serious note, I wonder ¿how much longer until our robots rebel and kill us? ”

I love that your question was preceded by “On a more serious note…” Awesome! That is a bit scary, though, about the drones.

[...] Bear McCreary’s Goodbye Message to TSCC fans here: [...]

You HAVE to release another TSCC soundtrack Bear! Your first cd was the best tv score I have ever heard and I listen to it almost every day! Every once in a while I find myself watching scenes from episodes such as “Today is the Day (Part 2)” over and over again because of your gripping music.

You introduced some really awesome themes in season 2 like the ones from “Earthlings Welcome Here”. The songs such as “Donald Where’s Your Trousers?” were awesome too!
Therefore I think you produced enough new material that us fans are dying to hear on a new cd.

Thank you for adding such a great part to the Terminator franchise with your music!

As a reminder of the greatness of season 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd_Zgla48g4

One thing I really miss from TSSC is the term “metal”. Using that was a great idea. So much better than the “machines” or “Skynet” from Terminator:Salvation

I was really sad to see TSCC get pulled, although I knew it didn’t have much of a chance once Fox put it in the Friday night death slot. At this point, Fox still has my big fat label as the network where sci-fi goes to die unfortunately. Thanks to you Bear, and everyone on the project for your hard work. It was a great show while it lasted.

I really wish they’d found some better way to tie together the mythos of all of the movies and TSCC, but alas, we have what we have I suppose. It’s a real copout when the movie writers are too lazy to pay attention to the tv series and hand wave it off as an alternate time line.

I’d personally love to see them take Terminator into the MMORPG space, but that’s probably just me. I’m such a gaming nerd. :-)

YouKnowWho_92… “You introduced some really awesome themes in season 2 like the ones from “Earthlings Welcome Here”. The songs such as “Donald Where’s Your Trousers?” were awesome too!”

Yeah, those were cool moments, for sure.

Steve… “One thing I really miss from TSSC is the term “metal”. Using that was a great idea. So much better than the “machines” or “Skynet” from Terminator:Salvation”

Yeah, that’s a great word. For a while they were using “tin cans” as well. Somebody on set once lamented to me that “Battlestar” had already coined the best possible derogatory phrase for robots: “toasters.” But, I like how they used the word “metal.” It was totally… um… metal.

Chaotica… “It’s a real copout when the movie writers are too lazy to pay attention to the tv series and hand wave it off as an alternate time line.”

I doubt it’s laziness. I really think it has more to do with politics and legal complexities. And honestly, the movie people probably WANTED to differentiate themselves from our little show.

“I’d personally love to see them take Terminator into the MMORPG space, but that’s probably just me. I’m such a gaming nerd. :-)”

And yeah, that would be awesome. Especially with multiple timelines. That could be cool.

-Bear

It’s funny, when I was sitting watching Salvation, I couldn’t help but feel that the score lacked any of the emotion or humanity or ambiguity that permeated your entire scores, Bear.

Given the choice, I’d have had you scoring the film. I’d love to hear what you could do with that kind of time and budget.

dibbler5… “I’d love to hear what you could do with that kind of time and budget.”

Yes, Time and Budget are always the constraints I’m working under, but I must confess those limitations have led me to some interesting musical ends, especially on “BG” and “T:TSCC.” For what its worth…

-Bear

Would you say that those constraints have actually influenced your style or the way you compose? Do you think you’re a better composer for having to work within them?

Just curious to know how you feel, as I can’t imagine how hard it is to have the scope of what you create limited by anything beyond ability. In the same situation, I could see myself standing in a pile of dumped drafts screaming “It’s not done yet!”

dibbler5… “Would you say that those constraints have actually influenced your style or the way you compose? Do you think you’re a better composer for having to work within them?”

Absolutely. If I had unlimited time and budget, I would have never approached “Battlestar” with such a minimal style in the beginning. Of course, that score grew in scope over the years, but that happened because of our restraints in the beginning.

-Bear

[...] The Sarah Connor Chronicles can be found on Composer Bear McCreary’s excellent blog, as he lists his 15 favorite moments from the show.  (They are all excellent choices.)  This show had its flaws, to be sure, but I am really [...]

gutted absolutely gutted this show is not going to have a 3rd series, was the only desent thing on tv

Hey Bear. Honestly, I’m not sure Terminator Salvation outshone Sarah Connor in any way, as a film or as a score….

I haven’t seen either Terminator: Salvation or Sarah Connor (I plan to!) I’ve listened to both scores, and I truly enjoyed your Sarah Connor score. I think it’s the mark of a great soundtrack when you don’t need to watch the show/movie to appreciate it as wonderful music. I’ve been playing Sarah Connor over and over again for the past week. (Along with Caprica….give me strength until July 28!)

I haven’t touched the Salvation soundtrack since I first got it. Compared to your score, it simply pales in comparison. You are too modest, although that’s not a bad thing at all!

90160279… “gutted absolutely gutted this show is not going to have a 3rd series, was the only desent thing on tv”

Me too, though I must confess there are a few other good shows on TV. Try Battlestar. :)

Duckey… “Compared to your score, it simply pales in comparison. You are too modest, although that’s not a bad thing at all!”

Yes! No one is more modest than me!! :) Says the guy on his own damn blog. :) Glad you’re enjoying the T:TSCC score. I’m very happy with how that record turned out.

-Bear

Really am sad that I just got into the show, I had been meaning to from the start but just couldn’t cause of working two jobs when it started and just no time. I’ve been a fan of the movies since like forever, so the series is really great. I’m not quite finished the 2nd season but do plan on finishing the series.

btw, the first song on the TSCC ablum is amazing. Just purely love and I listen to it over/over all the time. Almost as much as I listen to the BSG music

Sarah ;)

I just wanted to say,

That Sarah Connor Chronicles was the best show on TV. Especially as it cracked into the second half of season two. At the end of each episode I agonized the whole week waiting for the next. This show had everything for the viewer.

I leave you with this complement. I am not much into music..but even *I* noticed the beautiful scoring of this series. That is an achievement of which I hope you are justifiably proud.

Arthur

Jeez, are you in my head or what. I felt just as you about “ourselves alone”. I thought I was the only one who cherished that scene between Riley and Cameron.

[...] In the meantime, read messages about the cancellation from Josh Friedman and Bear McCreary [...]

Greetings from Istanbul.
Bear thank you for all your inspirational work in TSCC and BSG. And this post on cancellation of my favorite series is a great consolation.

Proclus… “Greetings from Istanbul.

Well, it’s literally the least I could do. :)

Arthur1920… “I thought I was the only one who cherished that scene between Riley and Cameron.”

Yeah, that scene was truly amazing. So understated, and yet incredibly memorable.

-Bear

Hi my name is John and im from Ireland. I just wanted to say how sad i am that TSCC wont have a season 3. Im totally gutted and its been a few months since it was axed. Its so cruel this show was axed with so many unanswered questions. Anyway Bear I just want to say how much i loved ur musical score on the show usually i dont pay much attention to the music of any show but yours was so beautiful and when combined with the acting it was just fantastic.

I was just wondering what is the reason you think that the show didnt become a hit? I dont understand why it didnt u know it was so different and unique and well written with so many interesting charactors i just couldnt understand why people tuned out. I know its a show i wont ever forget and when shows start in September ill miss TSCC so much.

I was thinking of watching Caprica when it starts so i was wondering would i have to watch Battlestar to understand Caprica?

TSCCFan1000…

Hey John, thanks for logging in and keeping this thread alive. I’m thrilled that audiences around the world are enjoying this series. Good to know there are fans in Ireland! :)

You asked:

“I was just wondering what is the reason you think that the show didnt become a hit? I dont understand why it didnt u know it was so different and unique and well written with so many interesting charactors ”

Well, I think you answered your own question. It was so well written with so many interesting characters, that I think it became too hard for the casual viewer to follow. That’s just my theory, of course, but I think that our dedicated fan base adored it, despite the fact that the majority of audiences kept trailing off. It really wasn’t a mainstream FOX-style series.

As for Caprica, if you like T:TSCC, I HIGHLY recommend that you watch this series. And while BSG has it own rewards for watching, it is, thankfully, not required viewing to enjoy Caprica. Check out the pilot and let us know what you think of the series. I’m actually curious about what people who haven’t seen BSG think of Caprica.

-Bear

TSCC wasnt a hit in Ireland either it was given the ‘friday night death slot’ in Ireland for its first season and the 2nd season didnt air on any network here. I think a small cable netwrok which i dont have bought the rights for it then. I dont know if the show had many fans here but i certainly loved it.

I dont think the charactors or the way the show was written was hard to follow i just think when people think of Terminator they think of big explosions and terminators coming after the connors every week and for me that would be incredibly boring and im glad the show was written the way it was.

Just out of Curiosity have u ever seen the british Scifi show Doctor Who? the only reason i bring it up is the musical score they use on that show is so beautiful at times it sort of reminds me of yours. I did download the caprica Movie a few days ago. Ill check it out this week and let u know what i think of it.

Bear, are you SURE you wouldn’t consider releasing another soundtrack? Your first TSCC soundtrack was AMAZING, and it only contained music from the series’ first 11 episodes! Couldn’t you release another soundtrack cd with music from the remaining episodes? I know all of us fans are DYING to hear it! You compiled a SUPERB soundtrack using only 11 episodes, I can’t imagine what you could do with material from 20! Could you at least make some tracks available via your site or perhaps itunes? I sure would appreciate it! I can’t get enough of your TSCC score!!! Thanks!

youknowwho_92…

I’m certainly considering it, but it’s a tough battle getting a soundtrack album for a TV show. There’s not a ton of support for the idea at WB right now. So, I’ll have to pick my battles carefully. Maybe one day we’ll release some other stuff. I certainly know there were some great cues from “Mr. Ferguson is Ill Today” that would be great on CD.

-Bear

I understand that. It’s just a shame. I appreciate that you are trying though. “Mr. Ferguson is Ill Today” was a great episode, music wise and story wise.

This comment comes from SJ Edwards, who had trouble logging in.

Dear Mr.McCreary,

I so enjoyed your score for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Were you specifically refrencing the haunting theme from Robert Mellin and Gian-Piero Reverberi’s 1965 english re-scoring of the original french ‘Les Aventures De Robinson Crusoe’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Robinson_Crusoe_(TV_Series) in your own ‘End Credits’ theme from TSCC?

I hope you were. It had stayed in my mind, since the last time I heard it (at about the same time that 2001: A Space Odyssey, was originally released. Now that’s haunting!) and the perceived reference, really helped to set the stage for the ‘marooned in timelines’ stories of the TSCC characters.

Like you, I was astonished how well Toni Graphia wrote for the Cameron-centric episodes, such as ‘Allison from Palmdale’ and really hope that she has the opportunity to write for Ms.Glau again. How strange, that nobody in the industry, saw that and signed them both for a non-TSCC feature film [and you :) ].

For you and everyone, who loved the way the TSCC was developed, written, played and scored, I strongly recommend watching Matthew Sweet’s new BBC documentary, ‘The Rules of Film Noir’: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00mbstz
There are some great insights from Paul Schrader, George Pelecanos (from The Wire) and many others, and watching it has hugely enriched my appreciation for the explicit ‘Noir’ themes of the TSCC.

Yours sincerely, SJ_Edwards.

SJ_Edwards…

Sorry you apparently had trouble logging in.

“Were you specifically refrencing the haunting theme from Robert Mellin and Gian-Piero Reverberi’s 1965 english re-scoring of the original french ‘Les Aventures De Robinson Crusoe’”

Um… no. I must say that I’ve never heard of what you’re talking about. :) But, I can imagine that music of that same mood would fit a Robinson Crusoe story perfectly. “Isolation” and “Loneliness” were two of the most important themes running through my mind when I wrote the Sarah Connor Theme, so perhaps those composers and I were drawing from the same ethereal well…

Hi Bear i finally got around to watching the Caprica pilot and i really liked it. Im very excited about it as a series. The pilot felt very dark and mysterious which i liked but ive to wait till January till the next ep? thats unfair.

But why was it given the friday slot? seems like syfy is setting the show up to fail. Well it was a great episode but it wasnt as good as the TSCC pilot but few shows are as good as that was. well no show was. I went back and rewatched the final 9 episodes and i just loved them more this time. Eps 14-16 were a bit off and i understand why people complained about them but in the end i actually liked them and well ep 17 with cameron and Riley i just love that scene in the shed. Have u seen any of the cast since the show was axed? i read Summer is going to Dollhouse for a few eps. Its nice she will have something to work on.

TSCCFan1000… “But why was it given the friday slot? seems like syfy is setting the show up to fail.”

Trust me, they want this show to succeed. I
m sure the reasoning is that it is taking BSG’s old time slot. Unfortunately, we never did that well on Friday (or Sunday).

“Have u seen any of the cast since the show was axed?”

I keep up with Thomas Dekker and run into a few of the other cast members now and again. I miss that cast and crew very much. Great series.

I know this thread is nearly dead, but it seemed like the best place to post this link. “Sarah Connor” producer / writer Josh Friedman wrote a great essay about science fiction writing, in particular his creative process on T:TSCC. You gotta check this out!

No! This thread will never die! Thanks for sharing that article though, Bear. Very interesting read. :D

Yes! Keep this thread alive!!!!

There have been a lot of rumors going around about a possible Direct to DVD movie or continuation of the series. Have you heard anything about this, or is it merely rumor?

I’ve been listening to the TSCC soundtrack quite a lot recently. Mostly because I’ve been trying to ween myself off the BSG stuff ’cause I’ve listened to it so much that I can now play huge chunks at the piano in some way or another. Seriously, the BSG soundtracks are addictive (19 of my 25 most played are BSG, 2 are from TSCC and 1 is from Caprica.) And yeah, I can’t believe I forgot how much I enjoyed listening to the TSCC music. It’s got that undefinable something that makes me just wanna sit down, close my eyes and listen. It’s such a shame we’re probably not gonna get a second TSCC soundtrack, there were some great musical moments in season 2 that definitely deserve to be let out.

I do not know if it will help much…but I recently put up a petition online requesting for a second season soundtrack.

Mal_27… “I do not know if it will help much…but I recently put up a petition online requesting for a second season soundtrack.”

Awesome! Thanks for sharing that link with us. I’ll point it out to the La La Land guys once it gathers some steam.

jonathondezlalour… “It’s got that undefinable something that makes me just wanna sit down, close my eyes and listen.”

Thanks for the kind words about my music. This is the best way to experience music (IMHO) and I’m thrilled that my work elicits this reaction from people, because there are so many wonderful composers whose work does that to me.

Duckey… “There have been a lot of rumors going around about a possible Direct to DVD movie or continuation of the series. Have you heard anything about this, or is it merely rumor?”

Hey Duckey, yes I’ve heard many if not all of these rumors. I can only counter rumor with another rumor, but I’ve heard from sources very high up the creative totem pole of T:TSCC that there is no continuation of the story in the works at this time. A straight-to-DVD movie may have been considered by WB earlier in the year, but the bankruptcy of Halcyon and a myriad of other factors scuttled it before it could gain any traction.

I know this is disappointing, but I believe we told a great story, one that did have some resolution. And I’m personally still hopeful that the story might get picked up again in some form or another one day. However, as you can see from this article, the rights to the franchise are currently a bit in limbo, so I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I am proud of the 2-season arc we accomplished as it stands and hope fans will continue to enjoy it over time.

No Fate,

I never could get into the show because the schedule locally kept leaping around. Like in the US, they do that when they have time to fill, and want to kill this show they regret buying. I thought my husband, being a big Terminator fan, would love the show, but he didn’t take to it for whatever reason. I, OTOH, loved it whenever I got a chance to see it, which surprised me all the more that he didn’t like it. I’ll put the box set on my to-buy list for sure!

But I’ll always remember the first time it was on. I was working on a report late at night. I was watching tv with headphones (Audio Technica a950s) on, because we’re in an apartment building and people who insist on keeping others up late suck.

There was the familiar and cool Terminator theme, but then also a more organic sound answering it. It just sounded so full of win. I thought “Now that’s something Bear might do.” – not thinking it sounded Galactica-ish, but just throwing things together that people with pipes and beards say don’t go together.

Wait a second, my husband smokes a pipe, and has a beard… hmmm…

Anyway, it gets my attention, I go “Hey! There’s River!” and enjoy the episode. Then the credits answer my question. The reason that it sounded cool, like something Bear might do, is that it was something Bear did. It wasn’t too long afterwards that I found this blog.

I’ll say something that would be blasphemy maybe, but I enjoyed what I saw of the series, more than I did the Terminator movies.

Hey Bear, is there anyway you can advertise the petition in one of your future posts? I have been having some trouble spreading the news about this petition and not everyone goes back to older posts (like this one). Thanks :)

Mal_27… will do!

-Bear

plainsong… “The reason that it sounded cool, like something Bear might do, is that it was something Bear did.”

I love hearing stories like this. I’m really proud of the T:TSCC score and think its an interesting companion piece to the BSG scores. I wish we could have kept going, especially to the point where I could’ve done a few episodes with an orchestra, like I got to do with BSG. Every once in a while, I can hear my “Sarah Connor Theme” played by 45 strings in my imagination and wish the rest of you could hear it too! Sigh… maybe one day…

-Bear

Thanks Bear!!

Ohhhh! One more thing, Bear. I sent you an email recently…actually i sent it twice (Lol). Whenever you have the time, well if you by any chance have any spare time in the day, can you respond to it? :P
[oshaughnessy-27@hotmail.com]

Thankssss

By the way, the Season 2 DVDs contain a 13-minute documentary about the music :)
It’s on the last disc.

Mal_27… “One more thing, Bear. I sent you an email recently…actually i sent it twice (Lol).”

You might have sent it to the old email. I don’t have time to check any of those older accounts. Send it to my staff email which is now up on the Contact page of my website. Honestly, the best way to reach me is through the comments on the blog.

-Bear

Oh.. well, I’ll send it to the staff email.

And the petition.. the signatures are going pretty good, in my opinion. I mean, going from 8 to 55 is pretty good in about two days. I am trying to advertise it more, but I am running out of sites to put the petition up on.

Bear, from time to time I have been adding music pieces that I had personally modified in some way or another to an online storage site called “e-snips.” One example of this could be your “Motorcycle Robot Chase” — I attempted to take out the remixed piece of the track and tried to obtain a certain similarity to the track used in the actual episode. Check it out if you have the time!

http://www.esnips.com/web/oshaughnessy-27sStuff

Due note that they are only viewable, and no one can download them. If you would like the tracks deleted from the site, please do not hesitate to tell me to do so (just please listen to them first :) )

Mal

Mal_27…

Wow, that’s some intense editing. You clearly listened to those demos I had up very carefully! :)

-Bear

:) Yes I did listen to them carefully!

Man, it’s been over a year since the TSCC album was released and I still listen to it almost everyday… A season 2 album would be the perfect Christmas gift!

youknowwho_92…

Thanks! I’m still really proud of this album, and hopeful that we’ll be able to release some more music in one form or another one day soon here. Unfortunately, Xmas 2009 is probably a little too soon to be able to release stuff. :)

-Bear

Hopefully soon…

If you were to create a second season album, what would be on it? It must be hard to pick and choose, but if you had to pick your favourites, what would be on the CD?

Thanks for responding Bear. I hope you are able to release the music in some form at one point as well!

Mal_27… “If you were to create a second season album, what would be on it? It must be hard to pick and choose, but if you had to pick your favourites, what would be on the CD?”

It’s tough because there’s a lot of great music, but very little that is vastly superior to the material on the first volume soundtrack. For sure, I would love to be able to share with you guys:

1). My arrangement of “La Llorona” from “Mr. Ferguson is Ill Today.”
2). The vocal performance of “Donald Where’s Your Trousers?” from “Adam Raised a Cain”
3). The big battle cue from the end of “Goodbye to all That.”

-Bear

Would the track of La Llorona be about 3 minutes long?
—————
In my opinion:
- the track used in “Samson and Delilah,” the cue before the track, “I Love You” was awesome. From what I heard from the DVD commentary was that you wanted to do something similar to horror music, and it was pretty spookyyy..

- the track used in “Mouse Trap” when John was being hunted by Cromartie at the fair or wherever they were. If I am not mistaken, it features Johns theme in the cue, but in a more suspicious mood. The first volume soundtrack had Johns theme but in a general peaceful mood. I think because John’s future becomes more.. dark, this track would better define him. Thats my opinion anywayy

- the track in “Self Made Man” where Cameron battles that terminator in the wall (the one who was sent to the wrong date). Interesting kind of music.

- the track from “Earthlings Welcome Here” where Sarah follows the road to the warehouse (while she listens to that female on the recorder). That is also an interesting piece of music. A bit different than your other cues.

- the track from “The Good Wound” where Weaver terminates everyone in the warehouse. One of the best infiltrator cues I have heard.

- the track from “Ourselves Alone” where Jesse kills Riley. The music made me miss Riley more.

- the track from “To The Lighthouse” where Derek gets kidnapped — and Cameron runs after the van. Yet another incredible cue.

- the track from “Adam Raised A Cain” where the Caliba Terminator infiltrates the Weaver Residence. Awesome battle cue.

- the track from “Born To Run” where Cameron infiltrates the jail. Camerons theme was absent from the Volume One Soundtrack. This would be the perfect cue to explore Camerons theme (and probably a less action cue from “Allison From Palmdale” would also be good).

Those are the tracks that stood out. I dont know if you noticed but I am a really huge fan of the infiltrator theme. They surpass Beltrami’s, Elfman’s, and Fiedal’s versions. They reallly should have let you score terminator 4. Try to convince them to let you do terminator 5! :P

Anyway, I still hope that we can get more signers for the petition. I REALLY want those tracks. It makes me angry that Warner doesnt want to release them. It drives me to insanity really. (Lol)

Sorry for the long response,

Mal

Mal…

Wow, this is a great list. Yeah, those were all cool cues.

-Bear

Hi Bear,

I was browsing your name on youtube and happened across this version of your TSSC theme.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jACC4fYdlgM

Being used to hearing it with the more metallic sounds, this was something slightely different.

Skating_Lientje

I’m really going to miss The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The second season was immensely good, and I was gutted by that cliffhanger. So gutted!

Out of interest, do you suppose there’s any chance of getting a second soundtrack for the series?

@ J.T. Jeans – Warner Bros, from my understanding, did not give the second season soundtrack a go because they felt that it was unnecessary because TSCC is a cancelled show. I have made a petition – in a last attempt to try to get them to rethink there decision. Try to get as many people as you can to sign it. Try to reach out to the fans and spread the word of this petition.
