Soundtrack Album Updates

Posted by Bear McCreary on March 27th, 2009

A few months ago, I posted an entry asking fans which pieces they would like included in the upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 soundtrack CD.  Since then, my blog has been brimming with ideas and suggestions from all of you, which will be very useful in the coming weeks as I finally begin assembling the album.  Even though I haven’t picked out all the tracks yet, I think that this fourth album will easily rank amongst the first three, and possibly outshine them all.

The one question I get more often than any other is “When will the CD come out?”  I recently spoke with the lads over at La La Land Records and got a tentative release schedule for my various projects this year.  Let me take this opportunity to update you all with all the information I know right now.  Please keep in mind, that all of this is subject to change.  I’ll announce official release dates and track lists as they get solidified.  But, there are currently THREE “Galactica”-related Bear McCreary albums set for release in 2009:

First up, Caprica:

The album is finished and is currently being mastered.  It will hit stores in early June, but will be available early from the label’s website in late May.  The sound of this score is much more intimate than Galactica, but I think fans will nevertheless be surprised at how lyrical, passionate and thematic it is.  In fact, many of the musical shifts you heard in Daybreak were inspired by the harmonic language I devised for Caprica

Battlestar Galactica – Season 4:

We are striving to have this record available in the second half of July.  I haven’t picked out the track list yet, but based on all the feedback I’m seeing here, I’ve decided that it will be a 2 CD set.  It will include highlights from He That Believeth through Islanded in a Stream of Stars on the first disc.  The second disc will contain virtually the entire Daybreak score.

razor.jpg

Razor / The Plan:

The two straight-to-DVD movies will get a separate soundtrack release later in the year.  Since I haven’t even seen The Plan yet, I have no idea how I’ll arrange the disc, but I imagine that these two will make a great listening experience.

Future Releases:

There are several other future releases that I’m working to bring to all of you.  As I mentioned before, I’m hoping to assemble a multi-CD set of un-released material from all four seasons, perhaps even including demos, sketches, out-takes, source pieces and other odds n’ ends I’ve produced for the series.  I am certain that there will be more “Music of Battlestar Galactica” concerts this year and next, one of which will hopefully lead to a concert DVD.  There are also tentative plans for more ballet performances, orchestral concert suites, documentaries and sheet music releases.  So, I guess what I’m trying to say is… I’m not done delivering the Galactica goods. :)

(I’m also hopeful that we’ll be able to release a soundtrack album for the super-cool top-secret video game project that I scored recently.  If you guys like the score to BG, you’re going to frakkin’ flip out when you hear this!  Details will be announced as soon as I’m allowed to say what it is!)

So Say We All!

I look forward to hearing the music from Caprica and most importantly a 2 disc set for Season 4! I also went to the last concert in L.A. at the Roxy you had so you better believe I’ll buy tickets for the next ‘Music of’ when and if its announced!

Excuse my language, but Frak me thats good news. You’ve made my day mate.

Regards the Razor disc; you haven’t seen ‘The Plan’ yet? How late in the day do you get to score a programme? I thought that special was finished, must have heard wrong…

Dear gods Bear! This is awesome news! I’m jut so miffed I have to wait until July! It’s like the BSG 4.5 season all over again! ;-)

I need to send you an e-mail buddy, but I have to say that I am ever so pleased with how you finished up the series and can’t wait to hear more of your work.

Thanks for all the great notes.

Best,

Jay

Bear,
Gods bless you, our generous composer. I couldn’t think of a better BSG fix now when it’s over than your score. When I heard the Stu Philipps theme in “Sam takes Galactica to the Sun” moment I neary cried. You’re the soul of the show.
2-discs for S4 set!!! Yay! I look forward most to:
1)Gaeta’s Lament
2) The Hub Theme
3) Dualla’s theme

Can’t wait to hear AJ and Kandyse’ singing. Gods bless you all. You’ve given us SO MUCH.

That wait for the second half of the season was a killer…

Will you be releasing these internationally or will I have to pop over to an amazon.com type website and order it?

“The second disc will contain virtually the entire Daybreak score.”

Yyyyyyessssssss…

Bear,
This is wonderful news. I eagerly await the releases!

PS: First comment on your blog, just like to say I immensely have enjoyed reading past updates, and the thoroughness of information you have entailed. Not just on the musical explanations, but on an even deeper level of story connections in the show. So thanks for the Blog…oh, and yeah, the immense musical workings you’ve unleashed on the masses!

Is it wrong that I giggled like a schoolgirl when I saw that there will be three Bear McCreary releases this year?

Can’t wait, Bear. I saw your video on YouTube of you playing the Caprica theme, and it’s beautiful. Can’t wait to hear more.

Fantastic !!!!

I’m definately keeping an eye out for those concerts. Those are REALLY good !!!

And the Season 4 Soundtrack should look good next to Seasons 1-3, Caprica and the Unreleased material.

I’ve also been looking at Terminator:TSCC soundtrack.

I love the snippets I’ve heard of that.

Very exciting news, sir. Good to hear about the break down. I think the standout of this announcement is the Razor/The Plan soundtrack, if for nothing else than because I wanna see how you do “The Plan.” I think that should lead to some interesting stuff.

Also extremely excited for Caprica, and le duh on BSG Season 4 being insanely anticipated.

Hey Bear,

I love the music you create so much that I would listen to pretty much any soundtrack you work on in the future regardless of genre but that being said I can’t tell you how pleased I am that there will be more BSG related stuff to look forward to from you. A 2-disc set for Season 4 is more than I ever would have dared hope for! I never even imagined that Razor/The Plan would get a release of their own. Also if the little preview snippet of music for Caprica you gave us was anything to go by then I’m just as excited at the prospect of listening to and becoming familiar with the soundtrack for that too.

Your scores for BSG have been in turn heartbreaking, gorgeous, hopeful, devastating, beautiful etc (you get the picture) and I think nothing is more a testament to how amazing the music you make is than how many people want to own copies of seemingly every note that was ever played onscreen. (And more besides!)

Very often you get a great film/show with an okay score or brilliant music to a mediocre film/show but Battlestar was an amazing programme that somehow you managed to make more, MUCH MORE, than it was to begin with and I can only say how lucky we as viewers are that you were the composer who ended up scoring the show. (And how lucky I am personally that BSG made me aware of your music.)

And if all that was a little bit gushy and TL;DR then the short version would be: You rock. Can’t wait to buy the CDs. :)

None the less good news Bear, cannot wait for all of them to be released.

AGGHHH!!! July… no this can’t be… I am finalizing my collection of mix CD’s and am waiting on season 4 music to complete one of them… I can’t wait that long… and then with more music being released later… this will surely cost me several wasted CD’s thru reburning… ah well…

can’t wait to get your pending CD’s and add them to my collection

:-)

-Scott

Sounds like you are hitting us with the motherload! Also, not to be a stickler, is there any news about a forth coming concert? Will it be this year or possibly next year!? Maybe at comic-con!? I only ask as I would need to arrange someway to get down to California (I’ve been to the past two and don’t want to miss this one due to some unfortunate recession related move). Thanks for keeping the fans well fed with your amazing musical food Mr. McCreary!

Concerts this year *and* next year! That’s awesome, that means that I might not miss out due to frakkin’ unemployment after all!

Looking forward to all of this music too!

Dear Santa. I know it’s early but this is what I would like for Christmas.

1. Caprica Soundtrack
2. 2 Disc Battlestar Galactica Season 4 Soundtrack
3. Razor/The Plan Soundtrack
4. CD Of Unreleased Battlestar Galactica Music
5. Music Of Battlestar Galactica Concert DVD
6. Soundtrack to Bear’s top secret video game project

P.S. If you could move Christmas to around the time of their releases then that would be great.

P.S.S. If this means we get more then one Christmas a year, then that is fine by me!

P.S.S.S. I think I might burst with excitement! :D

So happy to hear Season 4 will be a 2-CD set!

By the way, way back in season 2, for the opening of “Downloaded”, there was a drum piece that went with the dowloading of Caprica 6 and Boomer. Has that ever been made available? I feel like that’s one piece that would make the soundtrack collection complete.

Congrats on all your great work!

Paul

I´m chosing the easy way out and just say that all the people above me are right, beside the fact that I just feel like it´s Christmas already.

Hello Bear.
I’m a (very very) late fan of Battlestar Galactica, and I gotta say I completely fell in love with the scores you made. To say the least, I bought all seasons I could as well as their soundtracks in less time it took me to say it lol.

And I was completely thrilled with Daybreak’s OST. I mean, come on, you did a marvelous job on that one. And I wondered, as so many more, when the 4th season’s OST would come out, and I’m glad to read the present blog. I will be at stake now for it to come in the charts xD I already can’t wait.

As a late fan, I don’t have the luxury to know all your scores as well as many people around here, but I’ll try my best. It’s just that your music depicts *so* well the feeling watching BSG gives, it gives it a whole depth to the lot. I discovered your work not so long ago, and I’m beating myself up for having missed such pieces of art. Therefore, I’m really looking forward to hear more from you and your work.

Now, I’m rambling lol. Please forgive any mistakes I might have done here, I’m no English speaker ^^

Keep up the great job, I’ll be sure to keep looking for your deeds =D

Absolutely fantastic news all around. As a huge film score fanatic in general, and specifically of your work (on Battlestar and other projects), I’ll more than happily buy any of the releases and enjoy them fully. The amount of work put into all the excellent CD releases and the wonderful blog posts full of all the details us fanboys could ever ask for is very much appreciated.

Thanks, and keep up all the great work. Look forward to all the upcoming releases.

I’m really excited about the Caprica score based on the clip I’ve seen – you were absolutely right, the theme sounds so different played by the orchestra than it did when you played it on piano. It sounds like you’re going for somewhat of a more traditional orchestral sound, with possibly the first classical flute and oboe that I’ve heard from you (aside from possible Diaspora Oratorio). It was gorgeous.

I personally think you’ve got the plan right on of how to divide your season discs. Season 4 deserves two discs, I also believe Daybreak deserves a disc of it’s own, and that Razor and The Plan would go together well on their own disc… I totally agreed with how you did this and think it is quite wise.

I also get excited (and sad) thinking about the fact the real true album ending will be the cue of Adama on the hill. What a way to wrap up a soundtrack.

Hey Bear!

This is terrific news! And to think I thought this was going to be a Battlestar-less year.

Totally anxious to hear any updates on concerts and that top-secret project…whatever could it be!?!? either way…the music should be great.

Hi Bear!

This is really great news. The more the better with your stuff. It’s quality and quantity. I just hate that we have to wait so long, but I know that it will be well worth it. You keep making ‘em and we’ll keep buying ‘em.

I wonder if it’s a BSG video game…

Dear Bear: I can’t wait for July, I will count the days. I went into to a depression over the ending of Battlestar, but I always have your music, I must of worn my other cd’s out,I am so addicted to it I can’t get enough of it. It would be great if you did a concert in Atlanta, I surely would go and be in total bliss. The soundtrack to last of Battlestar was beautiful and just as addicting as the past seasons. The gods of Kobol have truelly given you such a wonderful inspirational gift with your music,it has gotten under my skin and I can’t get it out as well as my head. I will look forward to you other cds as well.

You are the best Bear for listening to our request for a double CD! I completely trust you will pick the best tracks as you have in the past for the last 3 albums.

I have a question, not sure if you can answer or are reading. Will you be doing a signing when the album is released? And would I be able to get it online since I will be in NY by then and not the west coast?

hey bear

there was a couple of ideas I had regarding season 4 & the unreleased boxset
1. the score for Ressurection Ship part 2
it had a great sound for the ressurection ship battle

2. Passacagila from Occupation/precipace
It had a nice feel to it because there was all this cahos going on when starbuck kills leoben

3.the song from crossroads pt 2 that brings the final four together for the first time.

I think thats it there might be more have to check back with you later on that….

Nice, seems like there is still a lot ahead of us… video game??? Man, it’s better gonna be good… who is developing the game? Who is publishing it? What genre? Are you allowed to tell us anything? I love video games… but you can do so many things wrong… especially with liscence games… can’t wait.

If you have a full Daybreak score that will be awesome! The score in those episodes was awesome, especially the finale. It seems you have control over what goes in to these CDs. That’s great! publish everything! ok, that probably won’t be possible, but i would buy it if you could.

you mention not being criticized by your fans as much as you criticize yourself. well, guess what, you suck! how’s that?! now give us your awesome music that is not actually awesome because you aren’t any good! i’ll accept your substandard compositions grudgingly and with my hard-earned cash. July is too far off but i’m sure i’ll still buy it.

i want to relive these moments with your score.

Wow, awesome news Bear!

“THREE “Galactica”-related Bear McCreary albums set for release in 2009″
So Say We All!

I’m really glad you are going with a 2 Disc set for season 4. At first I was on board with a 1 disc release because I thought it would be cool to match the other seasons. I didn’t mind waiting for the box set to get the material that didn’t make the first cut. But now that I’ve experienced the whole score I think 2 Discs are a must!

And I can’t wait to hear what the video game project is! I hope you can release a soundtrack too because it sounds like it’s going to be awesome. The game itself could be horrible but we already know the music is going to be fantastic.

Wow, 3 Galactica releases! Frakking outstanding! I’m so glad Season 4 will get two discs. I just don’t think it could be done with less.

I’m looking forward to Caprica. Should be interesting, and I’m sure you’ve got some great things for us.

I really hope you’ve been working on a BSG game. The one released a couple years ago sucked. BtRL is great, but a true blue, official BSG game with Original Score would be sweet. Now I gotta try not to get my hopes up.

Bear,

Do you, your brother, and Raya plan to do any more Battlestar-esque musical collaborating now that the show is over? Your version of “All Along the Watchtower” was incredible (as I’m sure everyone on here has told you repeatedly!), and Raya’s voice is just exquisite in songs like “Lords of Kobol” and “A Distant Sadness.” It would be exciting to hear more music in that style from you all!

~Tanya

Bear,

I’m really looking forward to this release. The choice to include virtually all of the Daybreak score is an excellent one since many of the themes were very well tied together.

If you are making plans for more Galactica concerts, any idea if you are doing any in the Chicago area?

Thanks!

On making the Season 4 OST album a 2-CD set (Disk 1 being He That Believeth through Islanded in a stream of Stars and Disc 2 Daybreak Parts 1 & 2). Good call.

Concerning the Caprica score, will the “Wander My Friends” motiff make an appearence since we’re talking about the Adamas?

Excellent! Looking forward to the new releases… and glad to hear that Season 4 will indeed be a 2-disc set.

In keeping with the show’s milieu, not only have the gods blessed you with such beautiful, moving talent, so has the One True God!
[Looks around for Angels Six and Baltar] Whew! They ain’t here, so I can get away with that. I can’t wait until you officially announce all those releases you have in store for everyone to pre-order.
Tick…tick…tick…I wait with baited breath. Thanks again, Bear.

Bear-

Just wanted to note that I LOVED the arrangement of “Sarah Connor’s Theme” (during the jungle flashbacks) in this week’s T:SCC.

I’m pretty sure I could listen to your music alone for the rest of my life and be happy.

YAY!! This is great news! Thank you for keeping us updated!

You mentioned the ballet, “Prelude to War”… any chance of that ever making it across the pond and being performed here in the States? Your entry about it left me breathless…

THIS IS THE BEST NEWS i have haeard this year, after reading that you are in Hagen ;)

Thanks for your Work and i wil wait for the releasedates :)

Wow, wonderful news !

I have to say that after all of the speculation on the film music boards, I am quite pleased to see the enormous wealth of material you are planning to release. I really like the suite format you use on your albums (I consider your “Season Two” disc to be a perfect example of how to reconceptualize score music for listening purposes), and am looking forward to hearing all of these albums!

I’m about to ply you with questions…

La La Land is a fantastic label, and I am quite glad that they are open to further releases of music for ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ I recently purchased your ‘Terminator’ disc even though I haven’t seen the series as yet; are you planning further releases of this series music?

Is the ‘Caprica’ CD the score for the pilot (like the first disc of ‘BSG’) with a “Season One” album to follow, or is it a “Season One” compilation straight out of the gate?

Do you ever go on tour with the live shows?

Thank you very much for your time, for keeping this blog (which I consider to be immensely valuable to anybody interested in both the art and craft of scoring), but most importantly for your intense and inspiring music.

A concert released on DVD – yes, yes, yes, do it, yes. Giggity!

And/or a Scandinavian tour. ;)

@Swashbuckler Given that the first season possibly hasn’t been shot, probably hasn’t been scored, and definitely won’t air until later in the year, my guess would be that it’s a score for the pilot!

Good point.

Never mind that question then!

OneBuckFilms: “I’ve also been looking at Terminator:TSCC soundtrack.”

Take it from me – if you enjoy Bear’s work for BSG, odds are *overwhelming* that you’ll like the T:TSCC soundtrack too.

SeskaLien: “Do you, your brother, and Raya plan to do any more Battlestar-esque musical collaborating now that the show is over?”

Well, you know what they say – “The family that plays together, stays together.”

Uncle_Mario: “Concerning the Caprica score, will the “Wander My Friends” motiff make an appearence since we’re talking about the Adamas?”

Hmmm… if Joseph Adama’s lighter is ever shown, “A Good Lighter” would be appropriate…

jnagel: “I LOVED the arrangement of “Sarah Connor’s Theme” (during the jungle flashbacks) in this week’s T:SCC.”

I’ll second that. The variation at the end of the ep too.

plainsong: “A concert released on DVD – yes, yes, yes, do it, yes.”

I’ll second that too. So say we all!

- M. \”/

One track I would love to be on some future soundtrack is the TV version of “Lords of Kobol”. The electric guitars work well in the “Pegasus” score, but for me they completely take away the haunting, lyrical quality of the track and make it appear too fast-paced.

In your Daybreak blog entry, there was a picture of you with Raya and Alessandro, implying (I think) that you’re going to be getting Alessandro to do his own vocals on the album. Can you confirm this? :)

Also, I was just thinking about Guess What’s Coming to Dinner last night, and I remembered there were some really awesome, moody orchestra cues behind his voice, especially when he sings “…just one day wake…” the first time in the episode. I was just curious how you were planning on arranging that piece, assuming you really are planning on including it on the album.

Oh, and like everyone else has said, a concert DVD sounds awesome.

ghostof82… “Regards the Razor disc; you haven’t seen ‘The Plan’ yet? How late in the day do you get to score a programme? I thought that special was finished, must have heard wrong…”

You probably heard that production was finished. Post still has a ways to go.

Phoenix66… “Will you be releasing these internationally or will I have to pop over to an amazon.com type website and order it?”

Not sure. The release will be the same as the other 3. Amazon is always a safe bet. Also, La La Land pre-orders from their website and I sign the first few hundred, which usually go on the first day of orders.

Moses Roberts… “Also, not to be a stickler, is there any news about a forth coming concert? Will it be this year or possibly next year!? Maybe at comic-con!?”

Nothing is set in stone yet, so hang tight. But, if there are any concerts this year they will almost certainly be in California.

Paul… “By the way, way back in season 2, for the opening of “Downloaded”, there was a drum piece that went with the dowloading of Caprica 6 and Boomer. Has that ever been made available? I feel like that’s one piece that would make the soundtrack collection complete.”

Yeah, there were a few cool cues from “Downloaded” that didn’t make the Season 2 album. The pieces you mentioned will definitely be contenders for the future release of goodies.

musicpaladin2007… “It sounds like you’re going for somewhat of a more traditional orchestral sound, with possibly the first classical flute and oboe that I’ve heard from you (aside from possible Diaspora Oratorio).”

Good ears. Those woodwinds are the biggest difference between the CAP and BG scores.

“I wonder if it’s a BSG video game…”

It’s not. :)

erikottowegner… “I have a question, not sure if you can answer or are reading.”

I can and I am.

“Will you be doing a signing when the album is released?”

Absolutely. It’ll be in CA.

“And would I be able to get it online since I will be in NY by then and not the west coast?”

As I just told Phoenix66, La La Land will sell autographed pre-orders from their website.

-Bear

Daniel… “Are you allowed to tell us anything? ”

I can’t say anything about the game yet, but yes, I think it’s going to be frakkin’ amazing. I worked on it for months and I can’t wait to play it! :)

BattlestarDon… “you mention not being criticized by your fans as much as you criticize yourself. well, guess what, you suck! how’s that?!”

Ha! Thanks. That’s better.

Jonny Boy… “I really hope you’ve been working on a BSG game. The one released a couple years ago sucked. BtRL is great, but a true blue, official BSG game with Original Score would be sweet.”

You know, early on when it was announced they were making it, my agent called the developer and said I was interested in scoring it. Nothing. Then, I called them PERSONALLY and said I’d be willing to contribute music or score it or whatever. They never even called me back! Eventually, they hired somebody to rip off my sound and made a mediocre BG game. When it came out I was relieved that I wasn’t associated with it, actually. This upcoming game I scored will be a MUCH better way for me to enter the video game world. :)

Tanya… “Do you, your brother, and Raya plan to do any more Battlestar-esque musical collaborating now that the show is over?”

Certainly!

jnagel… “Just wanted to note that I LOVED the arrangement of “Sarah Connor’s Theme” (during the jungle flashbacks) in this week’s T:SCC.”

Thanks! I was excited to see the opportunity to bring that sound back again. I got to do it once in Season 1 (and it’s on the soundtrack) and had a lot of fun with it.

dark-hearted rose… “You mentioned the ballet, “Prelude to War”… any chance of that ever making it across the pond and being performed here in the States? ”

Very good chance. I say that confidently, even though they are absolutely NO plans in the works right now. But, I’ve got a good feeling about it.

Swashbuckler332… “I really like the suite format you use on your albums (I consider your “Season Two” disc to be a perfect example of how to reconceptualize score music for listening purposes),”

I appreciate that. Some people complain because the cues get altered from the versions on the air, but the soundtrack album suites are vastly more fun to listen to. It takes a lot of time to re-assemble the music, but its something that makes a huge impact on the album experience.

“Is the ‘Caprica’ CD the score for the pilot (like the first disc of ‘BSG’) with a “Season One” album to follow, or is it a “Season One” compilation straight out of the gate?”

Looks like someone answered this for you, but yes, it’s the score for the pilot only.

“Do you ever go on tour with the live shows?”

Haven’t yet, but it is the goal for 2010.

-Bear

sonofamitch… “In your Daybreak blog entry, there was a picture of you with Raya and Alessandro, implying (I think) that you’re going to be getting Alessandro to do his own vocals on the album. Can you confirm this? :)”

I can confirm or deny nothing. But, yes, AJ and Raya and I were in a recording studio last month. :)

“Also, I was just thinking about Guess What’s Coming to Dinner last night, and I remembered there were some really awesome, moody orchestra cues behind his voice, especially when he sings “…just one day wake…” the first time in the episode. I was just curious how you were planning on arranging that piece, assuming you really are planning on including it on the album.”

This was a tricky decision. The vocal performance and cues that you heard in the episode worked well in that context. However, because it was recorded on set, and because AJ was in character, it really wouldn’t work as an album piece. You might as well just rip it right off the DVD and make an mp3 of it (which I’m sure someone out there has already done). The song WILL be on the album, for sure. But, not in the exact same format as it was on the air.

-Bear

Oh, this is FANTASTIC news! I don’t know how on Earth I’m going to make it until July before the BSG S4 CD is released. I want it, oh…yesterday, or so. :)

Hopefully whenever you do get those concert dates set, there’s enough advance notice for me to figure out if I can actually make my way from NY over to your neck of the woods. I’d definitely come up with a reason to schedule a vacation around a BSG concert event.

Bear: can you say what type of game it will be?
Also, are you talking about the lame xbox live arcade BSG game or BtRL when you said they never responded to you?

So glad season 4 will be a 2 CD set. Just watching the show progress, it’s interesting how the show runners really started to trust the music more and more as it continued. Listening to the soundtrack albums then rewatching the first three seasons, there were times when the music was chopped up or drowned out in the sound design. It seemed to change with “All Along the Watchtower” at the end of season 3… by the time season 4 it seems the music figured much more prominently in the sound mix and not only that, they were starting to incorporate the music into the story! So glad they realized what an asset they had in Bear and it’ll help make the season 4 album something special.

Question for you Bear, I’ve noticed you’re still doing tons of television work and now video games. Of course your output is great but I’m wondering if you get more television offers because you’ve established yourself on television, or you prefer working in television. It’s hard to imagine that you’re not getting calls all the time to score feature films. I also would imagine scoring several series is quite labor intensive, especially considering you obviously put so much effort into every score (more than most television composers). With all the television commitments do you still have time to work on features?

Hey Bear,

Awesome work. One thing I’d love to recommend for those of us who are *challenged* by the theme names and can’t recall what such-and-such a theme sounds like is a “Theme CD” release where all the major thematic material is located and named “by theme” (like Starbuck’s Destiny Theme, Starbuck and Anders Love Theme, Adama Family Theme, etc).

Even with the ability to read music, since I’m not immersed in your music all the time and don’t have the best musical memory, it’s hard to recall the thematic sounds while reading your blog. I know this could sound redundant given what you’ve already released, but it would be a huge help for fans who read the site and go “Wow… I know what that sounds like, but I can’t recall it to save my life…”

Just consider it.

I can’t say anything about the game yet, but yes, I think it’s going to be frakkin’ amazing. I worked on it for months and I can’t wait to play it! :)

Any chances you can tell us what kind of game it is, for example Action/Adventure, RPG, etc…?

Hey Bear

I was watching Pegasus Ressurection ship
episodes last night & did you use a Diffrent theme for those episodes than on the album ? noticed the ressurection ship battle sounded a little diffrent then the CD.

“However, because it was recorded on set, and because AJ was in character, it really wouldn’t work as an album piece.”

I see your point here. Have you ever listened to the Return of the King soundtrack release? Both Billy Boyd (Pippin) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) sing during that movie, and their voices appeared on the soundtrack… I find it really distracting, almost as much as if they had included clips of dialog from the movie (especially with Aragorn’s coronation chant).

Still, it was such an important musical moment from S4 it would be tough to imagine the album without it!

I am stoked to here your going to go with the two disk edition. I for one can’t wait. I might be the only one out there but for me Daybreak was perfect! I wouldnt change anything other than giving Bill and Saul a proper goodbye. The music was incredible. For me it’s you crowning achivment to date. I’ll be buying all these albums as they become available. What I would love is a DVD/CD combo with the unedited Finally as one disk and the complete unedited soundtrack as the other, but like I said, that would be in a perfect world… Any news on the Complete series Soundtrack boxset? I am drooling for that one! Plus I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the Concert DVD! If you can will you tour with the live show? I’m in MI and trying to get to LA is totally out of the question, but if you were to hit Chicago or Indianapolis… That I could pul off and I would LOVE to see it! it’s the only time a TV series’ score has ever had a personal effect on me! You my good sir, are leads ahead of anyone else in your field! My best to you!

So…basically 4 discs this year? I thought I had it good last year with Joseph Arthur’s release of 4 EPs, 1 full album and 18 on-line freebie-tracks, but this……this news is too shiny for words.

Also, looking forward to the 2010 Tour.

I hope to hear the extended version of Watchtower and hopefully a piano version too!

And don’t forget to consider the Orpheum Theater in Vancouver for a potential concert night :)

* SPOILERS*

Finally!!! Been looking for a way to tell you everything I feel about BSG and your scoring!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Me and my hubby are fans of your work Bear! When we first started watching season 1, we already noticed how great the scoring was. One of the great things we love about the show. Seasons 2 & 3 soundtracks were phenomenal as well. So of course, we bought ourselves the soundtracks! We cannot tell you how we are so looking forward to S4 soundtrack and THE PLAN.
My favorite of all is A PROMISE TO RETURN. I thought i heard it again when Starbuck was saying goodbye to Sam. Oh, your music just reached down my soul. The note progression, the melody, the violin just hurts so much that i feel starbuck’s inner monologue, pain and her love. I’ve been playing S1-3 soundtracks ever since the show ended and I’ve been crying still. I just love how you’ve captured the struggle inside, the pain, the beauty, the romance of each character and situation. We love the fusion of the drums with celtic, indian and raw voices. Your scoring is perfect! We are fans!!!!!!!!

oh and we absolutely love the ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the way the 5 were saying the lines of the song when they were being activated. Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the whole score of the last ep od S3 when starbuck appeared and the whole human and cylon fleet were headed to earth!!!!! Way too cool!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is all fantastic news. I’ve been listening to the current set of BSG albums, desperate since Razor to hear new and more BSG. The fact that there will be multiple disks just makes me glad. Also, when I heard about the live shows in L.A., I wanted to attend so bad. I live in Vancouver, so I thought Vancouver should do something similar since so much of the cast/crew are here. Hopefully in the future.

I’m actually going to watch the part where Adama is on the hill right now, just because I want to listen to the music.

Bear,
One last thing, sorry, i may babble. Fridays suck now!!! Ok, All better… Not really but at least I got it off my chest.
The thing I wanted to say, And I can only imagine what people will think. But I have NEVER liked all along the watchtower. Ever! Not Dylans! Not Jimmy’s! No body has ever made me like that song. And then, As the 5 were brought together, something inside me opened up and now that and heeding the call are in every one of my playlist and many of my mix disks. I can’t get enough of it, it still boggles my mind that that didn’t break through that wall seperating TV and Radio. By far, the greatest song to be birthed from a TV show since Belive it or not…HA! And by far surpasses it mind you : )now that I think of it, would that be the theme song for “The Greatest Caprican Hero” Ok, Yep, I’m definetly babbeling now…
If nothing else, The end of season 3 changed my life, So thank you for that. I thank gods you brought it back for the finally. And if there is a longer extended cut of it out there I would love to own that! I could handle a entire CD of nothing but all the versions of it. Bear McCreary: Watchtower… I’ll buy two!
So say me all…
Kevin

O. M. G.! I just heard the good news over at Bear’s last.fm page. AWESOME news. I’ve just signed up here. I’d never seen this place before. To think I could have had some sort of input in the season 4 soundtrack!?! Well I sorta have – cause I’ve been posting at last.fm and on youtube saying how we’ve just GOTTA have a 2 disc set for season 4… and I read here – we will! AWESOME!

I’m totally immersed in BSG music for the last… well couple of years – but lately – i’ve just been listening to the soundtracks since Daybreak Part 1. I can’t WAIT to hear the new stuff. And so much of it! Thankyou Bear McCreary. You do such AWESOME work. I don’t know if this is the forum to ‘gush’ but THANKYOU!

I’m sure it’ll be in there – but the ‘All Along the Watchtower’ bit with Kara and her father on the piano from “Someone to Watch Over Me” just HAS to be on the soundtrack. I’m sure it will be, somehow! :)

Cannot WAIT! :)

Oh – i’ll probably find a more appropriate area of this site to ask this question – but is there any chance you are going to bring your live Battlestar music show to Australia!?! It would go down a TREAT here. It’s something i’d DEARLY love to see.

Tanru

I’ll add a chorus of can’t wait for your concerts, hopefully there will be enough lead time from when they are announced so I can book a flight from New Orleans to LA presumably to attend.

dustin.rivers: “I live in Vancouver, so I thought Vancouver should do something similar since so much of the cast/crew are here. Hopefully in the future.”

I don’t live anywhere particularly near Vancouver (think: 630 ft. giant croquet wicket), but I agree – a Vancouver concert would be *eminently* appropriate, for the reason dustin cites.

- M. \”/

Keep it coming, Bear. I own seasons 1-3, and I’d gladly get season 4, Caprica, and ANYTHING else of BSG’s unreleased music you would choose to release. Send it all our way!

For season 4:

Gaeta’s Lament
Callandra’s Lament
Dualla’s Lament
Diaspora Oratorio
Farewell to Apollo
Kara’s Song (Watchtower via Slick’s piano)
The entirety of Daybreak…
well, really, anything and everything!

Another question Bear (or anyone who might know). I was curious if, since Bob Dylan is still alive and functioning (as far as I know!) has he heard about the BSG version of AATW, and let known his opinion of it. I know AATW has been covered by a number of incredible artists many times over, but I was particularly curious if he thought anything about the way the song was incorporated into the story, with the suggestion that the lyrics he wrote came straight from God!

Fantastic news Bear, I cannot wait for the CD to be released! I’ll be one of the first to buy them, promised.

Soon as I can, I’m pre-ordering all.

Bear, with the exception of what was included on the soundtrack already, I’ve noticed that this season of T:SCC has been less “intense” musically. For example there hasn’t been any T:SCC blogs. Don’t take this the wrong way, I know you’ve been swamped with Battlestar, and it was awesome–I just love your music and your insights, and T:SCC is one of my favorites, so I’m anxious to hear you riff on it.

I’d buy the entire disc just for the variation on The Shape of Things to Come which plays over the final scene with Adama looking out over the hills. That piece and how beautifully it complimented the scene honestly moved me to tears.

And for the record, I really wish that the show had ended right there. It was such a tender and moving scene, without a doubt the most intensely emotional moment of the episode if not the entire series (thanks, again, in no small part to the music) that it was a terrible shame to spoil it by following it up with such painfully dull and unsubtle epilogue.

Hey Bear,
Didn’t know where I should post this but you made me the happiest person on Monday, March 23, 2009 on the set of “Empire State”. I talked to you and got your autograph during the church/funeral scene. I’m petite with curly hair if you don’t remember. Anyway it was an honor to meet you. I say “I can’t believe I met Bear McCreary” at least ten times a day to my twin sister. We’re both huge fans. I just finished watching a re-run of “Daybreak part 2″ and again the music is breathtaking. I also forgot to mention that “Pegasus” is the best song to listen to when I want to relax and “Storming New Caprica” is so frakking awesome. As I mentioned to you my favorite song is the “Roslin and Adama” theme. I forgot to ask you this, since you’re making another cd with songs that were cut will you have some of the different versions of the “Roslin and Adama” theme? I love the versions in “Sine Qua Non” and “The Oath”.
Anyway thanks ssooo much for taking the time to talk to me and for the autograph that is now framed in my room.
Keep up the fantastic work!

I would really love to see some Music of BSG concerts in the San Francisco bay area. I am looking forward to all of the soundtrack releases.

Bear,

I know this is OT, but I just got T:SCC on CD as a brithday gift.

Pretty damn fantastic !!!

Tell Brendan I enjoyed Ain’t We Famous !!!

Yeah…a concert dvd would be fracking cool! is this really goin to happen? and are you guys planning to do shows in europe?

Awesome news!
I’m glad that Caprica’s soundtrack album also will be available a short time after it’s release date. The cues you mentioned on your entry about its music, makes me more excited about it.

I hope in BSG Season 4 CDs there will be the Kara’s theme we heard in Sometimes a Greation Notion when she saw her own dead body. I like this score much.

Concert DVD sounds interesting.I for one would not probably see these concerts alive, would like to have the oppurnity to see it onscreen.

“The second disc will contain virtually the entire Daybreak score.”

…this has officially just MADE MY DAY.

Just thought I should let you know :D

me: “a Vancouver concert would be *eminently* appropriate, for the reason dustin cites.”

Probably needless to say (but I’ll do it anyway, just in case), if you do this, make sure somebody takes pictures.

reticulatedspline: “reticulatedspline”

Hey, I got that reference! (At least I think I did. SimCity?)

- M. \”/

Oh Yes! This has got to be Fraktastic! All these releases in one year. I’m so happy. However, I have a lack of patience but still, the music will eventually come.

Thanks for your hard work on the series.

Hey Bear,

Ok after several more viewings of the Finale, I am so excited that a sole cd disc will be dedicated to the final episode. There’s so much music I don’t even know how you’ll fit it into that one disc, but I look forward to listening to it.

As far as the mix cd of music that was left off the 4 season soundtracks, will you set up a sort of polling thing to help get input from us? I’m thinking like have a list of potential tracks and offer like a brief description of what episode it was from and what was happening, maybe even have a 30 second sample. I personally am looking forward to getting the music to “Raptors vs Raiders” and the music from the episode “Pegasus” when Athena was being raped and the music to when Head Six sees Gina in her cell for the first time. I love those pieces of music and would really like them to be on the collection… and I’m sure I can think of several others… is something like that possible?

thanks for your wonderful work!

-Scott

Can’t wait to get all this new music! Thanks for the heads-up.

There are some promo clips of CAPRICA circulating around the sci-fi news sites — are they from the scored pilot or are those temp tracks? I’m thinking specifically of this clip with the Graystones and the Adamas getting on the Caprica City L, which has very BSG-feeling percussion behind it.

I heard it through the grapevine that the TSCC set has been torn down, that Summer is working on some Joss Whedon ballet-based project and that Shirley has returned to Scotland. If this be true, I’m one bummed out dude, but it might explain the lack of blogging on the subject…which blows most chunky. FOX are not the brightest bulbs in the lamp.

That the second disc of the Season 4 collection will be devoted to “Daybreak” is actually nice symmetry if you consider it to be a bookend with the original mini-series. And what a strange experience listening to the textural and percussive miniseries next to the highly thematic and emotional “Daybreak!”

(cue Passacaglia)
…and now, another episode of….
Raya’s completely unbiased, and highly intellectual opinions based on inside knowledge of Bear’s newest scores:

on SuperSecretVideogame:
You will poop yourself. You will poop yourself and disbelieve that it is anything but a film score. Basically it is. I was at the session, holy poop.

on Caprica:
You will poop yourself, and you will never stop until the Cylon war. Then you will have to Watch BSG all over again – and once again, totally lose your sh*t.

So poop we all
Raya

(cue Passacaglia)
…this has been another episode of…
Raya’scompletelyunbiasedandhighlyintellectual opinionsbasedoninsideknowledgeofBear’snewestscores. Goodnight.

no, but really. I’m not a gamer, in any way shape or form, and IM excited about it.

Wow, that’s a lot of pooping. But stock up on Kirkland Signature 2-ply. Good to hear from you, Raya! And congrats on the engagement!

Huh. Starcraft originally had an award-winning soundtrack, and I imagine Blizzard will try to take it up a notch for Starcraft 2. I don’t expect c/d on this, Bear, but I can cross my fingers.

Thought of one more question—any plans to make an appearance at the Battlestar auction in Pasadena in May?

I can easily imagine Mass Effect 2 w/ an awesome Bear McCreary score, but they’d probably go with the composer from the 1st one.
I just hope its cross platform. Not sure if I could talk my wife into buying a PS3 (I only have a XBOX360 & PC).

The 2 things I *really* hope show up on the S4 soundtrack are the Hub theme/battle piece and the opening to “No Exit.” If you have too hard a time deciding what should go in, just go for a 3 disc set!

I hope that there are not-too-few BSG music concerts (and/or other of your work) in the near future in LA.

By the way, watching Watchmen in theaters, when the music broke into All Along the Watchtower, my instinctual association was not “awesome, Jimi!” but rather “awesome, BSG!”

On a separate note, as a gamer, I would love a blog article on the differences between tv/movie music composition and game music composition, if you feel so inclined.

To everyone asking about my videogame project… I think I can announce it this week, so check back soon! :)

slime73… “Also, are you talking about the lame xbox live arcade BSG game or BtRL when you said they never responded to you?”

I think it was the xbox live game.

Hoichi… “I’m wondering if you get more television offers because you’ve established yourself on television, or you prefer working in television.”

TV does take a lot of my time, and I don’t take on ANY project unless its one that I believe in and one that I enjoy. I don’t know for certain what projects will come my way in the next few years, but I can hope that I can always work in multiple mediums, because I find it very rewarding and challenging. So, I hope I can always find a balance of TV, games and features. As a person who is able to write music for a living, I’m grateful to have so much work at all! :)

achilles2012… “One thing I’d love to recommend for those of us who are *challenged* by the theme names and can’t recall what such-and-such a theme sounds like is a “Theme CD” release where all the major thematic material is located and named “by theme””

Not a bad idea. I’m hoping over the summer to retro-fit the blog so that there are audio clips linked to every theme title, which is the most direct and simple way to get around this problem.

adamczar… “I just love your music and your insights, and T:SCC is one of my favorites, so I’m anxious to hear you riff on it.”

I know, I know. I simply haven’t had the time to blog about BOTH shows. In the meantime, check out some of my older entries on T:SCC, which have some interesting tidbits.

CapricaRose… “I talked to you and got your autograph during the church/funeral scene. I’m petite with curly hair if you don’t remember. Anyway it was an honor to meet you.”

Sure, I remember you! I ran into quite a few BG fans on my trip and I always enjoy chatting about the show.

OneBuckFilms… “Tell Brendan I enjoyed Ain’t We Famous !!!”

Yeah, I love that song. Probably why it’s ended up being featured in Terminator and BG!

Alex… “and are you guys planning to do shows in europe?”

No immediate plans, but I would love to try something like that next year.

route_82… “As far as the mix cd of music that was left off the 4 season soundtracks, will you set up a sort of polling thing to help get input from us? I’m thinking like have a list of potential tracks and offer like a brief description of what episode it was from and what was happening, maybe even have a 30 second sample.”

That’s a great idea. Once I’m done with the Season 4 CD and its released, I’ll set up a blog entry for that purpose.

Will… “There are some promo clips of CAPRICA circulating around the sci-fi news sites — are they from the scored pilot or are those temp tracks?”

That’s all my score.

Brian… “I heard it through the grapevine that the TSCC set has been torn down, that Summer is working on some Joss Whedon ballet-based project and that Shirley has returned to Scotland. ”

Never trust the grapevine. It’s not over until the Robot Lady Sings. Fox won’t make any decision until May sometime.

ISing4Cylons… “You will poop yourself, and you will never stop until the Cylon war. Then you will have to Watch BSG all over again – and once again, totally lose your sh*t.”

I can always trust my lovely fiance to word things better than I ever could. :)

Michael… “On a separate note, as a gamer, I would love a blog article on the differences between tv/movie music composition and game music composition, if you feel so inclined.”

One of these days I probably will.

-Bear

I would be very interested to hear about how the video game music works myself, especially considering the high quality of some of resulting scores such as Michael Giacchino’s ‘Medal of Honor’ series, John Debney and Kevin Kaska’s ‘Lair’ and, of course, Howard Shore’s ‘Soul of the Ultimate Nation.’ I don’t actually play video games myself, but I do enjoy those and other game scores.

I find it fascinating in film/television music how composers balance the specific moment with the needs of the overall arc of a story or character (one of the reasons I consider your blog to be fascinating), and the open-ended nature of a video game’s narrative must make that especially challenging.

I am wondering (and I would understand if this might be a delicate subject) if you would be interested in discussing the change from the restrictions placed upon your music in the first season of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ to the way that the series ended up relying on your music so heavily by the end. Was it a gradual change or a particular moment where somebody realized the potential of using music more prominently?

Here’s hoping you have a chance to play a show on the East Coast sometimes soon…

Thanks for the reply to the question about those drums from “Downloaded”!!!

I miss hearing your new music for BSG every Friday… But am very happy with SC music as well!

Congrats again on your success with BSG!

Also, any chance of an NYC concert?

‘ “…Ain’t We Famous !!!”

Yeah, I love that song. Probably why it’s ended up being featured in Terminator and BG!’

Maybe you should find a way to get it into “Eureka” for the “hat trick”…

- M. \”0 – \”/
(Joking, but serious at the same time.)

Someone let the cat out of the bag, Bear. The game sounds awesome! I can’t wait!

I’ve been checking out gameplay videos from the time it was first unveiled, but it’s a little hard to tell whether the included score is yours or just a temp version. When did you officially get attached to the project? Also, congratulations!

Hi Bear! Thanks for the update on the upcoming releases. I’ll buy all those CDs as soon as they’re available on Lalaland. I have a complete Bear collection, and I want to keep it that way ;)

I just found a news at Capcom’s homepage that said that you scored the music for “Dark Void”. Awesome!
http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2009/04/02/capcom_signs_battlestar_galactica_composer_to_create_the_score_for_dark_void

Was that the game you talked about? And another question: In the video on the page above, you were recording the music and you wore a black shirt with some logo on it. It seems like they blurred out whatever was on that shirt. Can you tell me what that was?

Might I suggest the screen-used version of “Watchtower” to be released on the unreleased-stuff-album?

Love your work, still waiting to get my ordered “Terminator” album.

Thank you
Daniel

If Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles does not get a second CD, are there any standout compositions from season 2 that you’d like to see LaLaLand make available digitally as downloads? Sort of bonus tracks or an EP’s worth to flesh out the original CD? Thanks

Swashbuckler332… “I am wondering (and I would understand if this might be a delicate subject) if you would be interested in discussing the change from the restrictions placed upon your music in the first season of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ to the way that the series ended up relying on your music so heavily by the end. It’s not a delicate topic at all, just a difficult one to explain. I can’t really say when or how the producers and writers decided to incorporate the music into the story more. But, my best guess is that “All Along the Watchtower” in Season 3 is what opened the door. Because Season 4 was definitely a different experience than the first three.

Lex… “In the video on the page above, you were recording the music and you wore a black shirt with some logo on it. It seems like they blurred out whatever was on that shirt. Can you tell me what that was?”

I think it was a JINX shirt. I wore it on my first day scoring a video game. :)

willbueche… “If Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles does not get a second CD, are there any standout compositions from season 2 that you’d like to see LaLaLand make available digitally as downloads? Sort of bonus tracks or an EP’s worth to flesh out the original CD?”

Not a bad idea. It’s still too early to know anything about a future T:SCC album, but I’ll keep that in mind.

Here’s something cool if you guys haven’t seen it yet. SCI FI.com is running some footage from my “Daybreak” scoring sessions. This is just a sneak peek at the documentary we’re preparing for the Season 4.5 DVD set.

-Bear

Cool. I’m looking forward to a proper documentary.

The parody on the 4.0 set was funny, but I was disappointed because the title made me expect a real docu.

Bear said: “It’s not over until the Robot Lady Sings.”

That’s some solid positive thinking that I’m all too happy to adopt.

Cool clip Bear !!!

Okay, I’m impatient for the Season 4 soundtrack :-)

Great that a composer cares how his music will be presented on disc. I think it’s a wise decision to release a seperate album for Razor and The Plan. I’m really looking foward to your season 4 album.

Friday night and no BSG.

Bear, I am wondering if you will be making available piano sheet music for some of the BSG music. I notice the “Sonatica” is available. Will more BSG pieces become available?

Thanks.

I think we’ve learned what Raya’s favorite word is.

Good to hear that there’ll be three BSG releases this year, but it also means I may have to put off some purchases until later. Well, depending on how my wallet looks this summer. Plus, if there’s another SCC soundtrack release…

Now, I am glad that you’ve opted for a two disc release for S4, but I can’t help but think it’s not going to do it justice. I will admit, Daybreak does deserve a disc on its own, so there is that. But as for the rest… I don’t know.

It seems to me that season 4 is on a level unlike that of the previous seasons, save for some moments during the second half of season 3 when the music started to become a bigger aspect of the show. Cutting that down to one disc? Personally, I’d be willing to pony up for a three or four disc release. It might not be commonplace for film or TV (it can be found more often with gaming), but what you’ve done isn’t an example of a typical score. But that’s just my 2 cents’ worth.

Before I wander off, I want to echo what others have said: thanks for keeping our suggestions and comments in mind while prepping this. And more importantly, for helping foot the bill when the resources ran out.

Steve… “Cool. I’m looking forward to a proper documentary. The parody on the 4.0 set was funny, but I was disappointed because the title made me expect a real docu.”

You’ll enjoy the doc(s) we’re preparing for 4.5. We really get into the nitty gritty detail of the scoring process. Anyone who reads this blog and watches the docs will be an EXPERT in the BG score. :)

JoeP… “Bear, I am wondering if you will be making available piano sheet music for some of the BSG music. I notice the “Sonatica” is available. Will more BSG pieces become available?”

Yes, I’m planning on doing a sheet music release of the piano pieces from “Someone to Watch Over Me,” perhaps even including a 2-hand version of the song Kara and her father play. Keep an eye out here on the blog for an announcement sometime this summer probably.

Revelation 23… “Now, I am glad that you’ve opted for a two disc release for S4, but I can’t help but think it’s not going to do it justice. I will admit, Daybreak does deserve a disc on its own, so there is that.”

I hate to admit you’re probably right. The first part of any soundtrack album process is to assemble every cue I think is worth paying attention to into a single playlist and then narrowing it down. In season 2 and 3, this initial collection was somewhere around 2 hours long, which meant I had to trim around 40 minutes to get it to a fit on a single disc.

A few days ago, I collected every album-worthy cue for Season 4 (and was pretty strict about which ones I let in). This came out to FOUR AND HALF HOURS! So, even allowing for the double disc, this still leaves almost 2 hours of album-worthy music on the cutting room floor.

So, I’ll definitely have lots of material for the future release of odds n’ ends.

However, as I’m getting the tracklist together, I can see that the Season 4 album is shaping up to be pretty incredible.

-Bear

Gods, I can’t wit for that album. I have loved every minute of score from the show, but Season 4 just went into overdrive and never let up. Friday nights sure are a lot less exciting now (except for T:SCC, of course!)

I’ve just been re-watching the entire series, and I gotta say, that the music does take it to the next level in season four, and I’m especially excited to finally hear what kind of album you put together! Hearing that you’ve got over four and half hours of potential material is pretty sweet.

Just a couple things I’d like to mention. I know that you’ve probably got your hands full selecting tracks for the CD, but I’d just like to say that there are a couple variations of themes in “Six Of One” that I particularly enjoy.

The piece that plays Lee and Kara are both in the cell that was a combination of the Apollo, Starbuck (I think, I can never, truly tell), and Lee/Kara themes is in my opinion, really beautiful and touching.

Also, the Adama theme that plays during Lee’s leaving ceremony is also a pretty nice variation. Although, having already featured a version of the Adama theme on each soundtrack so far, I guess it’s asking a bit to have yet another one on this soundtrack ;).

Finally, any chance of a BSG concert coming to Canada, Vancouver specifically?

Thanks!

4.5 hrs, 4 discs, seems appropriate for season *4*, yes? I’m not seeing the problem!

So you scored “dark void” the video game then! i saw you in a documentary on “gametrailers.com”!
The way you introduced music to the game sounds really interesting! a like the ” re-sequencing” concept. ;)
Any score release for that one?

Thank you for the timelines as to when your next BSG and Capica soundtracks are coming out. And I had no idea you also did the music for my other SCIFI favorite Eureka. I am buying that CD today.

Just curious – will the new BSG and Caprica soundtracks be carried by Amazon and BarnesandNoble.com?

I am asking being the BSG 3 Soundtrack seems to have disappeared. I am hoping it is because so many people bought it after the series finale that LaLa Land is just out of stock. :)

All my best to you and your upcoming nuptuals.

Namaste.

Bear,
I have loved the music for Battlestar Galactica since the miniseries. You have continually reinvented the score while maintaining its integrity. I have logged every character’s theme into memory, and I loved how you used each and every one in the finale.
I have but one request:
Please, please, PLEASE include the three most prominent pieces from “Someone to Watch Over Me”
1) The piece Slick is scoring at the beginning
2) The piece he plays when Kara says “You’d better learn to play that thing first” (which underlies the monologue by Chief)
3) The piano version of the Final Five’s “Watchtower” theme

If you include these, my life will be complete, hahah.
Thank you for all the wonderful music!
-Shane

After watching Friday’s TSCC ep, I must ask, will there be a season 2 disc and will it have that piece that John Henry and Savannah were singing on it? That little song haunted me for most of the rest of the weekend.

Side note: it was a fairly difficult to watch episode – very emotionally heightened story arcs – but exceptionally well done. In fact, I found this episode ranked equal with some of BSG’s best eps.

I just watched last weeks Terminator episode.
Now I have a question (possible Spoiler, for those who haven’t seen this): When Derek is killed the music slightly changes, but when one of the main characters is killed off, you might expect a more dramatic music. Was that your decision, or the decision of the director/producers? The whole scene was looking like some red-shirt-guy on Star Trek was killed, and not one of the main cast. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it. A lot. It felt real.

BTW: since BSG is now off the air (except for the upcoming movie), you should consider to rename your blog, and tell us (as detailed as you did on BSG) about the other work you’re doing, like Terminator (I hope it doesn’t get cancelled), Caprica and Eureka.

In the Episode “Some Must Watch While Some Must Sleep” of Terminator, did I hear a few notes from Brad Fiedel’s original Terminator Theme?

[...] Bear McCreary’s Blog (Composer for Caprica) he recently posted that the Caprica Soundtrack will be released in stores in [...]

In rewatching some of the season 4 episodes, it occured to me that maybe there is just too much music that deserves to be put on those 2 CDs.

So I wondered, have you considered perhaps pulling a Radiohead or a Trent Reznor, embracing the possibilities of the web and releasing some material for free online along with the album? I know there’s a couple of choice cues that are frakkin’ good music even without the BSG connection, but which wouldn’t necessarily make sense on the released soundtrack album, in the context of the other volumes.

Plus, if you get down to it, and I’m just stating reality here, the pirate scene is already giving away your music for free. They are your competition. But, some of those pirates are just regular lazy joes, angry at how the music industry has treated both them and their artists. They could be convinced to throw some money your way if you show that you’re not like those ‘greedy big corporations’ and just a cool guy making some sweet music. It’s a pattern that has been repeating for music, games, software and more.

And it’s easy to take it a little bit further. You’ve already had requests from fans for specific musical extras (like the beat up piano samples) with which fans can take their own spin on your music. I know I would give BSG fan compositions a chance to listen to, yet I couldn’t care less about yet another YouTube video of clips from the show edited together.

Obviously this sort of stuff takes time and effort to run, and even if you wanted to do so, it would require you to make these arguments yourself to others, who may not want to understand any of this. But I think it would make for great and /genuine/ promotion of your work and seems to be the next logical step in how you’ve built out your presence as an artist, both out there and online. And at the very least, you have an eager fanbase who can do a lot on their own if provided a space to do so.

My apologies for the rant. But I work in social media, and I know this sort of stuff can work, and is being done already. Maybe think about it ;).

I guess this is the place to put this question. Bear, with the soundtrack for ‘The Plan’ – will you be going back to a more ‘percussion-based’ soundtrack – akin to Richard Gibb’s score for the miniseries and your scores for earlier season 1 episodes? To me the music grew and evolved over the series as the journey of the last of humanity’s survivors unfolded. Or is this idea of ‘going back’ – of… “curling the flower back up” too limiting?

Hey Bear!

Like most of these folks, I’m practically dying in anticipation of Season 4’s OST… to pass the time, I just finished pulling favorites from my Season 1-3 albums and arranging a tribute/anticipation tracklist.

TVDIVA… “Just curious – will the new BSG and Caprica soundtracks be carried by Amazon and BarnesandNoble.com? I am asking being the BSG 3 Soundtrack seems to have disappeared. I am hoping it is because so many people bought it after the series finale that LaLa Land is just out of stock. :)”

You called it. Orders spiked and the label can’t keep them on the shelves. Amazon and Barnes&Noble are re-stocked now. :)

Brian… “After watching Friday’s TSCC ep, I must ask, will there be a season 2 disc and will it have that piece that John Henry and Savannah were singing on it? That little song haunted me for most of the rest of the weekend.”

It’s too early to know, but that really was a lovely musical moment in that episode. I was on set with Raya while she vocal-coached Garrett and Mackenzie. It was so much fun to be a part of it.

TK-949… “Was that your decision, or the decision of the director/producers? The whole scene was looking like some red-shirt-guy on Star Trek was killed, and not one of the main cast. ”

Thanks for the spoiler warning. Obviously, there was no place for dramatic music. They hardly slow down at all. Funny you’d mention Star Trek Red Shirt guy, because that’s EXACTLY what I said to the producers the day I watched this with them.

That was the whole point. The show is making the point that if you do this for a living, if you’re a professional soldier, at any minute this can happen, and no, it doesn’t always “mean something” like it does in the movies. Dramatically and narratively it was an interesting choice, one that defied expectations.

UnConeD… “So I wondered, have you considered perhaps pulling a Radiohead or a Trent Reznor, embracing the possibilities of the web and releasing some material for free online along with the album? ”

I dunno, man. I’m flattered that you would consider me in the same realm as those artists, but they sell more albums than me by a stunning margin. They’re in a very different business model. :) Your point is taken, though.

Tanru… “Bear, with the soundtrack for ‘The Plan’ – will you be going back to a more ‘percussion-based’ soundtrack – akin to Richard Gibb’s score for the miniseries and your scores for earlier season 1 episodes? ”

I don’t know yet, I haven’t seen it. But, that’s certainly a possibility. One idea I had was to reference the older music, while giving it a new twist. I’ll have to wait and see what the movie needs before I make any decisions.

That’s wonderful news, Bear! I really have been wondering when we would finally get the BSG score for the fourth season, now it looks like I have even more to look forward to. A two disk season four album sounds fantastic PLUS a seperate soundtrack for “Razor” and “The Plan” PLUS “Caprica”. Wow! That sure makes me happy. Glad we could help you with the choices, though I bet it was even harder to choose now because we all had so many ideas LOL

This 2 disc season 4 compilation…awesome. So glad you decided to do it. I wish the piano/orchestra version of All Along The Watchtower Kara and slick play was longer and could go on the release. Such a cool sound, the piano and the orchestrations.

Bear, please please please have the version of “The shape of things to come” that played during Bill Adama’s last scene in which he described the layout of the house him and Laura would have had. I was literally moved to tears by his strong performance and the music. Since finding out you compose for the sarah connor chronocles, ive started watching just to hear what amazing melodies you’ve come up with. I’ve already purchase the soundtracks to season 1, 2, & 3 and do most of the writing for my novel with them playing. I look forward to hearing more as always, write on!

Mr. McCreary,

I’m a first time poster and first off, I wanted to say how amazing your score have been for BSG. Honestly, it wouldn’t have been the same show with the same emotional impact that it had without you. I was reading your entry on “Something to Watch Over Me” searching for a reference to the last beautiful sonata in that episode with Kara and Sam and the Chief realizing he’s been duped in his fake house. I was hoping that it was an actual composition that I could buy, but apparently, its all you! Incredible job! So, I’m posting imploring you to finish that piece. It is so moving and a 50 second snippet on the show does it so little justice, I find myself looping it over and over. If it can find itself on the soundtrack CD that would be great, but if not, please finish it so we can hear it in its full glory. Thank you again and amazing job!

*Sorry about the title : “Someone…”

Bear,
you’ve now been know as one of the composers to look for. You’re finally in the big leagues! This prompted me to ask you a question, answer it when you have the time: Which film score composers have had the biggest influence on you?
Which movie scores are your favorite?

Bear

So glad to hear that Daybreak will basically have its own CD. The music of the finale is so deep and layered in an opera-like manner(for lack of a better term) that I could watch the episode sans dialog and still follow the story. I await the season 4 disks (what I hope will be epic in length) complete score you have teased us with. Thanks again for all of your hard work on the series, and for your above the call of duty willingness to converse with your fans. I await Caprica, and hope to make it to any live shows you might have planned down the road. Bravo sir.

Dear Bear,

Any chance of you doing a concert somewhere in/around Boston? Maybe you have a long-lost relative you’d like to visit? I certainly hope so! Still listening to your BSG soundtracks on a daily basis; cannot wait for Season 4 (although I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to listen to it without crying). Take care,

R.L., Belmont MA

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE include the piano version of “the song”/watchtower that Kara plays… that was so awesome.

The news of upcoming releases is great news! The BSG CDs have been some of the best soundtrack compilations I have come across, with real thought into what tracks to include.
I’ve reviewed the Caprica DVD with special mention of the score. I hope it’s ok to link here, otherwise please feel free to delete the post.

I look forward to more Bear McCreary music soon :O)

jadedstarbuck… “Since finding out you compose for the sarah connor chronocles, ive started watching just to hear what amazing melodies you’ve come up with. I’ve already purchase the soundtracks to season 1, 2, & 3 and do most of the writing for my novel with them playing.”

You should check out the T:SCC soundtrack album. I must admit there are some lovely melodies on that show, with a purposefully robotic and metallic flavor.

Danmints… “Incredible job! So, I’m posting imploring you to finish that piece. It is so moving and a 50 second snippet on the show does it so little justice, I find myself looping it over and over. That was my original intention, but unfortunately, in order to get the album out soon, there’s no way for me to compose a complete piano sonata in time. So the album will have the version from the show (in a slightly expanded format) and hopefully a future release will include a bigger / better sonata.

smystal0… “Which film score composers have had the biggest influence on you? Which movie scores are your favorite?”

This is a difficult question to answer. Check out my comments in this thread where I mentioned some of my favorite soundtrack albums.

flowwrnglr… “Any chance of you doing a concert somewhere in/around Boston? ”

Nothing in the works at the moment.

I’ll admit, the minuet I heard that Caprica had been leaked onto the net, I caved and downloaded a copy (still 100% planning on buying the real thing as soon as it comes out, so no worries!).

All I can say is that the score was fantastic. It incorporated all the beautiful melodies of your Battlestar score while adequately distancing itself so as to be a distinct pleasure on its own. Bravo!!

I do have one question, though. Without giving anything away, there was a particularly touching moment in the Pilot where a familiar theme from BSG was brought in for a brief cameo. Going forward in the series, will you be incorporating that theme (and perhaps others) throughout?

I definitely hope so- because…. Chills, man. Shivers down my spine!

Bonjour,

I’m sorry not to speak in english but actually french is really appropriate to describe how much i love your work, your music (and this is my language too! Not a shame). I hope you understand a little bit of what I’ve written before, otherwise i’m sorry.
I just want you to know there is a lot of people, here in France, who love your work, your music.
We hope you’ll come one day to see us and to do a concert.
I’m sure this new CD will be great and amazing.

Merci à vous. Prenez soin de vous.
Thank you. Take care.

PS: Sorry for my mistakes.

Hi Bear,

Thanks for the email.
Can’t wait for the Caprica DVD. I nearly gave in to the temptation of downloading Caprica but I’m going to hold out for the official DVD. I can safely say that once again it’ll be your music that ads emotion and mood to each scene. I’v started a forums for Caprica at http://www.capricaforums.com and of course each and every BSG fan on this and other planets are welcome. An honorary place is always open at the top of the table for you Bear.

Pour rejoindre ma compatriote Angeline ;)… Magnifique, sublime, innovante, et prometteuse pour l’avenir, la musique de film a encore de beaux jours devant elle, merci, Mr McCreary!

Please continue your great work, hope a concert in France too!

Ainsi soit-il!
So say we all!

Your music has served as a source of inspiration for me for years – absolutely amazing. The amount of money you’ve made me spend to upgrade my stereo equipment is sickening! I hope my neighbours appreciate your music as well, because they don’t have much of a choice. ;)

…I feel compelled to give you money,
directly,
bypassing the labels.
I’ll mail a gift certificate or cheque or something to your agent – make sure they don’t snag it.

Looking forward to a Vancouver concert. Great work, man.

-Patrick

A two disc Season 4 soundtrack? Oh man that’s so exciting! I’ll be buying every albulm released this year. Caprica comes out tomorrow on DVD. Can’t wait to watch that and hear your brilliant music.

You did it again Bear. The music on the Caprica DVD is amazing. Keep the great sounds coming.

I’ll be posting a review on http://www.capricaforums.com. i just have to change my maximum ratings from 5 stars to 50 for your music :-)

Just finished watching Caprica. It’s interesting, it’ll be worth my time next year once it airs. Bear, your music was beautiful. I heard Battlestar themes in it which was nice hearing. I can’t wait to hear more from you in this series.

Watched Caprica last night and I really liked it! It was nice to hear some themes from BSG like the Adama Family Theme when Joseph is talking to little Bill Adama. :) Looking forward to your music in this show!

WARNING: semi-spoilers above and in this post.

I was so excited when I heard Wander My Friends that I started clapping. :D Beautiful touch, Bear. It was the little things that made Caprica even more awesome than it already was.

Wow!! I just watched Caprica… you were right, very very different than BSG but no less entertaining, I think it’s going to be a fantastic show.

Your score was very excellent by the way… some of the most lyrical writing I’ve heard of yours, and love the BSG references… Wander My Friends… was that also a Prelude to War taiko groove in the Cylon demo scenes?

I know you said you would be posting a Caprica post… hopefully soon! Can’t wait to see what you have to say about your work on this.

you have to put the Piano version of all along the watchtower on the soundtrack!

Bear, I am wondering if you will be making an available piano sheet music of your amazing Caprica’s Theme. –> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CguEY9e2SqQ

Thanks.

Angeline…

Merci beaucoups! :)

Pat300z… “…I feel compelled to give you money,
directly, bypassing the labels.”

Don’t worry about that. I just want people to buy my CDs which makes it possible for me to release other CDs. :)

cinerie… “Bear, I am wondering if you will be making an available piano sheet music of your amazing Caprica’s Theme. –>”

Probably not, because I never really DID a piano arrangement. In that video, I was literally making up the arrangement as I went along. :)

Hello Bear,

I wanted to add a late comment to this blog entry. A number of people have inquired about whether a composition of the piano version of watchtower from ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ is going to make the soundtrack. I suspect that by this time all production is done so the matter is settled one way or they other.

I’m a little bit hesitant to share my thoughts amongst all these loyal and wonderful fans you have because before these few seconds of piano music I didn’t really know who you were!

Sure, as a fan of BSG I noticed your name in the credits but I had never really internalized the extent of your role and impact on the series. When I watched the episode ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ I sat up and said ‘oh my god!’ when Kara and Slick were playing together and the soundtrack took prominence. You see, the music that most appeals to me (from a broad set of genres) are those pieces that just seem to somehow *work* (almost at a brain chemistry level – if you know what I mean). After listening to those couple of moments of Kara and Slick I rewinded and watched it again and again on my DVR.

I knew I had to find that piece of music! Off to the internet I went in search of it. I soon learned about the level of original scoring on the series (which I had never realized or appreciated before – silly me) and I discovered this blog. Your three-part entry about that episode (and the blog in general) is absolutely fascinating. From your writing, I’ve gained an immense appreciation about the creative process that goes into a production like BSG as well as the impact of original scoring. I’ve also enjoyed observing the impact of that piece of music (as illustrated by the comments to your blog entries and piano players who have been learning the music by ear and posting to youtube).

Since my ‘discovery’ of you (I wish I knew about this blog long ago) I’ve continued to explore your music and feel I can now safely call myself a fan.

In response to other comments, you’ve said that you weren’t sure if you were going to have the opportunity to compose a fuller/longer arrangement of the ‘Kara and Slick piano piece’ for the soundtrack. I’m anxiously awaiting the upcoming release and am obviously hoping that a version of this composition/arrangement will be part of it (or somehow else finds the light of day). ;)

Though I’m a late comer, you’ve expanded the BSG experience for me in a way I never expected. Thank you Bear. I look forward to continue to follow your work.

Cheers,

- Paul

Scrawl… “A number of people have inquired about whether a composition of the piano version of watchtower from ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ is going to make the soundtrack. I suspect that by this time all production is done so the matter is settled one way or they other.”

You are correct, I’m nearing the end of this album.

While it’s too early to announce anything official about the album, I can say with some certainty that you won’t be disappointed. :)

Thanks for the kind words about my work. I’m especially happy that the music of “Someone to Watch Over Me” stood out for you, since it is a very special episode for me personally.

So Say…

-Bear

Bear can’t wait for the season 4 double sounds like it will be great.

i hope will be available in Australia

Bear, Amanda asked me to post this to your blog instead, so here goes:

Do you have any plans to release more BSG sheet music, a la Battlestar Sonatica? Specifically, I would kill (not literally) for the scores to Elegy, Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1, and Kara Remembers, the latter of which reminds me very much of the piano work by Mike Garson on Trent Reznor’s Just Like You Imagined.

Cheers,
-Scott

p.s. We had a conversation earlier regarding “temp love”, and how you had been in that position many times; are there any examples on either the BSG soundtracks (unlikely) or in the episodes themselves (somewhat more likely, I guess) where you recall this happening?

Scott… “Do you have any plans to release more BSG sheet music, a la Battlestar Sonatica?”

Yes. We’re releasing all those pieces in the near future. Keep an eye out on the blog in the next few weeks (possibly months), but hang tight… they will be released!

“We had a conversation earlier regarding “temp love”, and how you had been in that position many times; are there any examples on either the BSG soundtracks (unlikely) or in the episodes themselves (somewhat more likely, I guess) where you recall this happening?”

Temp love happens to everybody. It happens to John Williams (whether he admits it or not). It’s a part of the job. It was definitely a part of my life for the first three seasons of BSG but by Season 4 I was pretty much free to do what I felt worked the best.
