I’m Getting Married!!

Posted by Bear McCreary on February 24th, 2009

Thanks to the blistering speed of news across the internet, many of you already know about this.  But here it is anyway.  Yes, I am now engaged to the lovely Raya Yarbrough!

There were two things I’ve known for years I must accomplish before I turned 30.  First, I had to finish composing my final episode of Battlestar Galactica, since I’d spent more than half my 20’s working on it.  More importantly, I also knew I had to finally pop the question to Raya.

I composed my last cue on Saturday the 14th, and Raya and I were engaged before sunset on the 15th.  I turned 30 on the 17th.  So, I made it, with a day to spare!

Saturday night we announced it to the world at a private concert at The Mint, in Los Angeles, the same venue where we premiered our first Music of Battlestar Galactica concert in 2006.  When Raya closed her set with an acoustic cover “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” I got all blubbery and jumped up on stage with her.

I hadn’t planned a speech or anything, so what followed was totally spontaneous.  And luckily, the moment was captured on camera and made its way to YouTube within hours.

The night was incredibly magical.  Raya’s band was stunning as always.  She performed some of my favorites, including the Pink-Floyd-y “Listen Em“ and a new song with an infectious 5/4 groove.

Then, my incredible music crew presented me the most awesome gift ever: an epic portrait for my studio wall they brainstormed together and that was created by artist Andrew Craig (who also took all these pictures).

They created a portrait of me riding atop a valiant steed, playing accordion and holding my baton in the air like a sword, set against the backdrop of the first Cylon War.  This thing should go in the Smithsonian!

Next up, my brother’s group, known as “BrEndAn’s Band,” followed with what was essentially a two-hour stadium rock show that happened to be performed in a small venue.  He opened his set with an arrangement of the first piece of music I ever composed!  I wrote this epic symphony when I was less than 2 years old.  And needless to say, this was the best performance of it ever.

Brendan dedicates “Let’s Get Hitched”

Brendan’s tunes have never sounded better.  One of my favorite songs has always been “Let’s Get Hitched (which was featured on the Eureka soundtrack).  But, that night, Raya and I danced to it and it had new meaning.  :)  After the song, Brendan insisted that he play it at our wedding, for the first dance.  That suits us just fine.

Steve Bartek

They played “Ain’t We Famous,” the song that was featured recently in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as well as “Up With the Sun,” “We All Stay Together,” “Light Years Apart” and many others.

Brendan and Paul Cartwright

Not only did he perform his own incredible songs, but he also covered Elvis PresleyDavid Bowie, Prince and Freddie Mercury.  How many singers you know with the stones to do that??

At the end of the night, I joined them on stage with my axe and we played “All Along the WatchtowerGalactica style!  Fortunately, Raya already knew I play accordion before I asked her to marry me, so there were no unpleasant surprises that night.

So there it is.  I wrote my last cue for Battlestar, got engaged and turned 30 in the same week.  My 20s have been very good to me, and I’m looking forward to the next decade. So far, so good.

So Say We All!

PS: In case you’re a BG fan who doesn’t know, Raya is a remarkable singer / composer / arranger. Her ethereal voice is woven throughout the Battlestar score. She sang Season 2’s “Lords of Kobol,” Season 3’s “A Distant Sadness” and Season 4’s Baltar Cult Theme. Her voice is also making a prominent return in the final episode.

And she’s got an amazing album out on the Telarc label. :)

Bear – I had no idea you were going to do a blog entry on this…oooooohhhh now I feel so bitchy for torturing you with tech support questions tonight.
Wait…was that why you did it…Are you making me feel guilty?…..dude.

Ladies, words of advise, don’t marry a guy with a popular blog….no matter how talented..or cute..

;)

Im glad you liked the painting. I think we were all a little worried about whether or not it was too absurd or just absurd enough.

Congratulations, Bear! The very best of luck to you and Raya! Best week of your life?!?

Congratulations !!!!

Hello ISing4Cylons, are you Raya Yarbrough?

Sorry, I’m a little baffled and confused. You guys posting here all know each other? I just tried to defend Bear from someone I thought might be prying on the last post. But I feel like I’m the one who is the strange prying fan here now.

Again, congratulations to both of you.

Hey Norman…

No reason to feel like a strange prying fan, but by coincidence, yes a few of the people here know me. But, honestly, the vast majority don’t. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t going to post anything about this for a while, if at all, since it just didn’t seem to be anything I thought BG fans would care about.

But, when I saw the comments flooding into the “Deadlock” entry, I figured I might as well put something official up.

By the way, your comment on that thread… “Best wishes and congratulations, Bear. And I mean that in a shallow and superficial sense”… cracked me up. Well said! :)

-Bear

Andrew…

“I think we were all a little worried about whether or not it was too absurd or just absurd enough.”

That’s definitely the balance. Frankly, with something like this, you can’t go too absurd (and you didn’t… by a close margin). I was blown away by the time and energy that everybody put into and the painting will be a conversation piece for years to come! Thanks so much!

-Bear

Bear,

You know, some of your fans worry me. They gush too much praise and they want to know about your private life. If that’s someone you know it’s cool. But it might be a tell tale sign of a stalker if you don’t know them.

I once had a weird fan who use to haunt me at science fiction conventions — oh, wait, you probably don’t know about this:

http://hubpages.com/hub/A-Blog-from-Hell

So, I’m a bit sensitive to overly gushing people and fans prying into my own life. It puts me on guard.

Norman…

Cool art!

I hear ya, man. I’ve had several weird / borderline scary experiences myself. But, I try not to let that sour my experience interacting with people who love the same things I love: sci fi, soundtracks, Battlestar, etc. One day we may reach the point where I have to scale back, but I hope that day never comes.

And as I mentioned to Hogan in our interview, people on the internet can be invasive and occasionally nasty, but everybody here on my blog seems exceptionally insightful, genuinely interested in the music and not overtly intrusive.

So, yeah… everybody gets to know I’m engaged. But, to be safe the location and date of the wedding will not be public info. :)

Smart move.

I’ll be back Friday for your next Galactica post after I’ve heard this great music you promised us.

Over and out.

Congratulations Bear & Raya!

And hooray, you even updated the Galactica FAQ already :D

Can I see a close-up of the painting? It sounds… ridiculously awesome.

Hey Bear, congrats to you and Raya! I didn’t know you two were together. Acutally it’s good you spilled the facts here as I do not search any gossip on the internet (as it is mostly false), so good to hear it from you personally. I love Raya’s work as much as yours, especially “Lords of Kobol”. She has such a beautiful, pure voice.
Will she accompany you on March 7th at the Prelude to War – Premiere in Hagen? That would be too good to be true.
I’m really happy for you guys ;)

Norman,

I think you’re making a very good point there. And to clear things up, I’d like to say that I don’t know Bear personally, and I didn’t actively search for any private news like that. I got linked to that YouTube Video from

http://community.livejournal.com/battlestar_blog/1522834.html

and was wondering why this great news hasn’t shown up on Bear’s blog yet, so I thought I’d give everyone here a heads-up — because the news was already out there. It was never my intention, nor will it ever be, to stalk Bear or pry on his private life. No way!

So, if you, Bear or anyone else feels that I have crossed a line that I shouldn’t have crossed by spreading the news, I’d like to offer my sincere apologies. (Although it’s too late for that, I know.)

No hard feelings, please. And again, congratulations to Bear and Raya. :-)

Stephan

Wow!! Congatulations to both of you!!

Wow, i made up for you both, Congrats!!

Also looking forward to the score for next weeks ep and the Finale, cant wait !!

Happy 30th Bday aswel ! (wow you have alot of things to celebrate haha)

Big congrats Bear! What an eventful few days! Best of luck to both of you.

I wonder about the fate of T:SCC but I sure hope you guys get to continue on with another season. That’s the show I follow the most. I know they wrapped up production on Monday.

Bear, several borderline scary experiences? Yikes. That’s always the creepiest thing to hear about.

We met very briefly at your Terminator CD signing. I hope there were no scary fans there that day! Really appreciated you being there for that.

But another big congrats to you guys. Cool photos. Thanks for sharing those with us.

I am amazed by the fact that videos from private events find their way to youtube these days. A while ago someone put up a video of a very personal memorial ceremony for the late Basil Poledouris. Clearly it was meant to be a family event. These are very odd trends.

Nevertheless, congratulations to Bear and Raya. Best of luck and may your love inspire both of you.

A little bit off topic… I was wondering, if Jamie Bamber had “the big irish bear McCreary” in his mind, when he agreed to do his new campaign:

;)

To Bear and Raya…I wholeheartedly congratulate you!

Way to go!

congratulations!!!! you’re so open with your fans about the music you create, and it’s very cool that you would share this with us as well. we’re thrilled for you both!!

dude, the painting sounds hysterically awesome. I laughed out loud at my computer here in a coffee shop…

and yes, it’s good to get things like accordion mastery out there on the table at the beginning… ;) I think sometimes my husband wished he’d known about my scifi streak earlier on!

Congratulations Bear!

Congratulations!

The Internet doesn’t know how to keep secrets does it? hehe

WOO-HOO! Congratulations to you both!

SO SAY WE ALL!!!

These are the first pictures I’ve seen of Raya. She IS lovely. Already knew you’re quite handsome. The loveliness boost of you together is geometric, not arithmetic.

“Let’s Get Hitched” – VERY appropriate. Gotta put in a vote for a clearer picture of that painting.

No rush on this but – given the genes on both sides – if/when the two of you have kids, they’ll probably be frakkin’ Mozarts.

- M. \”/

I congratulated you in the “Deadlock” entry but congrats again on your engagement and all you have accomplished! Looks like you had an awesome celebration and you definitely deserved it! Thanks for sharing this with us!

And I completely agree, Raya has a very lovely voice. Glad to hear she will be featured in the finale!

AndrewCraig, that is a GREAT piece of artwork.

Oh. My. Gods.
!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was listening to BSG OST when suddenly jumping to that awesomest piece of news. So happy for both of you! Raya is amazing, haunting voice, enchantering, so gentle… I envy those guys, who has the chance to hang around at your concerts, Bear. I know I’d drown in my own exhilaration.
May you have the happiest life together. So say we all :=)))

Oooooooo Bear, how scandalous! ;-P
Congratulations to you both…very very cool.
Your deadline cramming skills are to be admired!
Best,
Rich

Wow, congrats! Man, sounds like you really ARE having a huge busy year. I am at work right now so I will have to look at the vids later.

I do want to mention that while, yeah I know it probably sucks having the world pry into your personal life, I think one of the things that makes you unique from some of the other score composers out there is your accessibility, interaction and openness with the fans. Of all the different genres of music, film scoring seems (at least to me) to be the thing out there with least amount of information about the process and craft, so it’s so interesting and helpful to watch how you go through yours (and perhaps help with my own attempts at some point, provided I have the opportunity, it’s hard to find them!) I hope and pray that no one in the course of that takes advantage of that. But I do want to thank you for that and hope that doesn’t change. Aside from that, it’s cool to hear the occasional non-music related happenings and am happy to celebrate with you in the accomplishments! I’m sure the only thing that would make this year better would be an Emmy nomination… which I am personally crossing my fingers for this year.

PS: Hahahaha… I saw you changed the answer to the last question on the FAQ. Was hoping you’d remember to do that ;-)

And just to further the point by musicpaladin a bit, many of us fans appreciate a chance to meet some of our favorite actors, musicians or others working in the industry, and always try to be respectful. That’s why I hate to hear of the weird encounters sometimes.

Had the good fortune to meet Josh Friedman and all the Terminator cast last November, and in December it was Bear!

Not everyone in the biz is willing to do those things and we really appreciate it.

Congratulations, friend! Felicidades and whatnots! I saw this in a google alert and double took with a buh whaaaaa?

And now I see it I’m all fersmoigan (I think that’s phonetic).

Glad your twenties went excessively well. Here’s to your thirties being just as if not more with some of the awe!

Stephan,

Thanks for the comment. I felt kinda stupid once I was saw my post right there under Bear’s. You’re right, you don’t have to actively search for any private news like that. Just look for Bear’s music on YouTube and the party videos are there.

No need to offer any apologies it seems. In fact I should probably give you one. Sorry that I misinterpreted your post.

They say the one thing which travels faster than FTL is scuttlebutt. Congratulations Bear and Raya! May we send cards, and if so, where?

“Bear and Raya, Sitting in a Tree….”

WOW!!!! Congratulations to you two! So say we all!

Wow! another battlestar plot-twist that I never saw coming, just kidding, good luck in your married life, happy birthday, happy last Battlestar cue, lots of luck Bear.

CONGRATULATIONS BEAR!!

That’s awesome, I wish you all the best!

Congrats on your engagement!

:-)

SO SAY WE ALL!

BSG just continues to warm the heart. You know you have a keeper when you can break out the accordian, and she’s cool with that. Kinda like when I told my husband that I grokked the ukulele, and he, the jazzer bass player, got all supportive.

I have to confess I’m one of those fans who has a crush… but my crush is strictly musical! That must mean it includes your fiancee, and that just makes it weird. ;-)

/is happily married.

//is only interested in the musical comings and goings of Bear…

///has a husband whose middle name is Bear (in Swedish). His first name is shared with a cylon, and they pronounce it wrong on the show.

So. Bear. What are you doing NEXT week? Gonna be hard to top that last one.

Congratulations to you both!

Hey everybody! Thanks for the kind words and all! Last week was a very exciting one indeed.

I hope you guys enjoy the exceptionally musical episode of BG this Friday.

-Bear

Congrats to Bear and Raya!!!!!! This is such exciting news, the YouTube videos are great, I feel like I was there. ;^) Many, many, many happy years together!

Oh, now I realize that it’s a family affair. I mean your brother and now your future wife and all… they’re part of this musical infatuation. I think I need a shower now. Unclean, unclean!

But really, that Watchtower version was full of Win. We have a Galactica Watchtower version that my husband and I play, not in public or anything, but me on electric ukulele, and him on bass, and only 8 strings between us, it’s sparse. :)

BSG, The Musical – including the hit song “Hitting a Superior Asshole”, and no one will be admitted during the stirring balad, “It’s in the frakking ship!” It ends with a stirring ensemble, “So say we all.”

Ok, I’m all giddy. I look forward to Saturday (us in Euroland have to download it. They stopped showing BSG in Finland after season 2. We download, and buy the DVDs)!

Congratulations Bear.

I’m am so happy for you both.
Not to steal any of your thunder, but after I bought the season 3 soundtrack, I knew something was up, kind of a sixth sense if you will(no i’m not psychic or crazy it was just a crazy feeling).

Any way I’m so glad you shared this moment with us your fans, all to often people seperate the fame from the person, but from the very beginning you’ve been open with us, and shared insights we who are not in the music industry or in the business of composing don’t get to see or hear about.

You are too cool.
Once again Best wishes, and may God Bless both of you with a long and happy life together.

Wow! Very cool… Who knew you two were a couple (I mean, us fan folk obviously)?

Congratulations… and hopefully even more likely to have you two do concerts some time soon? Wink ;-)

Congratulations both og you! <3

Well, here’s at least one person that heard the news first from you. I had not a clue! Congratulations to you both!!! And that sounds like one wicked fun party! A well-deserved celebration for all of your awesome musicians.

Congrats again! *G*

[...] – In new school BSG news, the composer for the series is now engaged. [...]

Congratulations, Bear and Raya! A wonderful confluence of musicians! Best wishes! Can’t wait for your entry on the latest episode…loved all of the piano cues – so beautiful!

Bear I can’t say congratulations enough to the both of you! You make every Friday night viewing of Battlestar so much better. Raya’s voice is amazing and ethereal!

Hope you had a great birthday!

:)

This news and the youtube brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful synergy! God bless you both!

PS I am a Floyd fanatic and Listen Em is an amazing song. There’s some basslines in Ummagumma that often remind me of some of yours, namely in Season 2. Are you also a Floyd fan?

You, sir, know how to close out a decade of your life. Congrats!

Congratulations Bear, all the best to you and Raya! :)

Bear, congratulations to you and your lovely fiance, Ms. Yarbrough!

May you have a wonderful, long and happy life together.

Congrats Bear and Raya! Thanks for all the wonderful music! If you can bring half as much joy to each other as your music has to me, you should have a beautiful marriage!

Congratulations! That’s fabulous news!!

Congratulations! Wish you the best!

Dear Bear:
I was fortunate to be at the concert in San Diego last summer and Raya was radiant. You are lucky and so is she. I am so happy for you, congratulations.

I cannot wait to hear what is coming next!
With love your friend and fan,
Sue

Bear McCreary. I just randomly decided to google you to see if you made anything of that awesome piano talent from high school… mainly because i decided to pick up piano again this weekend after 10+ years. Wow, look what I’ve found! You are the man! If you read this, congrats to all your success and to your engagement. Keep going, sir! :)

Mark in DC… “PS I am a Floyd fanatic and Listen Em is an amazing song. There’s some basslines in Ummagumma that often remind me of some of yours, namely in Season 2. Are you also a Floyd fan?”

Yeah, I’m definitely into the Floyd. My favorite albums are the run from Obscured By Clouds up through the Wall, although there are great songs before and after those as well.

Listen Em is a fabulous song, one that Raya wrote of course. One of my favorites, and it’s on her new abum on iTunes or Amazon. Worth checking out…

MattPope…

Great to hear from you again! Yeah, I’m still playing piano a little bit. :) Go BHS!

-Bear

Bear, the score you did for “Ourselves Alone” was so good. Especially when Riley is shot. My god what a tragic scene that is, and the way they showed her laying there with your music right then. Just tragic, but what a powerful scene you guys made. Great stuff.

This is the only spot I could think of to comment where you might see it. Hope you didn’t mind.

How about a hi-res photograph of that awesome painting, posted here for all your adoring music nerd fans?

Congratulations to you and Raya both!

Congrats on the great news!

Bear, congrats congrats congrats! When I was at last year’s Music of Battlestar Galactica show, one of the unexpected memories I came away with was how electric you and Raya were together. Every time you looked at her, the stage practically caught on fire. (I know, unbelievable I could even notice such things alongside Paul Cartwright’s athletically passionate solos. What can I say, I’m an incurable romantic when it comes to long looks that threaten to split the atom with their intensity.) I am so happy that you’re getting hitched! Here’s wishing you years of wedded bliss!

Gary…

Thanks for the kind words about “Ourselves Alone.” I’ve not had enough time to really blog properly about Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so it’s good to hear from people enjoying it. The last 5 episodes of the season are the best we’ve done yet! So, keep watching…

-Bear

Wouldn’t miss them. Hope you do get a chance to blog about it some more. I can imagine how busy you are though.

When Josh listed some of the story resolutions coming up in the last 5 episodes and showed a teaser clip at WonderCon, I think fans were extra excited about the rest of the season.

It looks fantastic.

Bear … most sincerest, musically-underscored, lyrical congratulations to you and Raya.

The joy you find in each other and in your music brings joy to the rest of us during these rather trying times.

So many things are ending … so many things are beginning.

So say we all.

Bear,

This is great news! I’m deeply and enthusiastically happy for you.

Shaun

Happy Belated congrats Bear…. :D
