“Prelude to War” World Premiere Performance in March!

Posted by Bear McCreary on January 23rd, 2009

March 7th, 2009 will mark the first European performance of my music: The World Premiere of “Prelude to War” by the Hagen Philharmonic and Ballet of the Hagen Theatre in Germany.  It will run throughout the spring, for 13 weeks.

“Prelude” is based on my scores for Battlestar Galactica, incorporating music from all four seasons (see the full program order below).  The orchestra will be in the pit, but the taiko drums will share the stage with the dancers, incorporating their movements and energy into the visual performance.  This ballet tells no specific narrative, but rather allows the dancers, lights, taiko drum ensemble and full orchestra to come together and support the story within the music itself.

This live performance will be very different than the performances at the Roxy in Los Angeles last spring. I selected much larger, more epic pieces than were featured in those concerts because I now have a full orchestra at my disposal.  Performing works such as “Prelude to War,” “Passacaglia” and “Diaspora Oratorio” were simply not possible at the smaller LA venue.  I’m thrilled that there is finally an opportunity to hear them in concert.

The program order will highlight many newer works from Season 4, including a suite from Sometimes a Great Notion.  It will also include several outstanding pieces from the first three seasons:

    “Prelude to War”

A Ballet for Orchestra, Dancers and Taiko Ensemble
    Music by Bear McCreary
Based on the score to “Battlestar Galactica”

    I. Prelude to War
(from Pegasus and Resurrection Ship, Pt. II)
    II. Passacaglia
(from Kobol’s Last Gleaming, Pt. I)
    III. Baltar’s Followers
(from He That Believeth… and Escape Velocity)
    IV. The Ressurection Hub
                (from The Hub)
    V. Among the Ruins
                (from Sometimes a Great Notion)
    VI. Fight Night
                (from Unfinished Business)
    VII. Roslin and Adama
(from Resurrection Ship, Pt. I & II)
    VIII. The Signal
                (from Revelations)
    IX. Diaspora Oratorio
                (from Revelations)

The choreography is by Ricardo Fernando, and the orchestra will be conducted by Bernard Steiner.   The orchestral arrangements were created by James Hopkins.

The ballet will premiere March 7th, 2009 and run for 13 weeks.

Tickets and more information are available from the Theater’s Official Site.
The box office phone number is 0049/2331/2073218.

I plan on attending the premiere performance.  I hope to finally meet some of my many European fans.

    So Say We All!
    -Bear

PS: There are only a few weeks to spread the word, here, so I’d appreciate any help from you guys.  If you visit any other BG forums, please pass this link around.  Let’s make sure all the fans in Europe are aware of it. Many thanks!

PLEASE tell me this will be filmed (and possibly sold)… this sounds amazing and unfortunately going to Germany (or anywhere outside the U.S.) at this point just isn’t in the cards for me.

Also, congratulations! This is a great achievement for both BSG’s music and your career! Keep up the excellent work! :)

I’ve been reading this blog for some time now but this is the first time I just -had- to reply.

I’ve been hoping for something like this, ever since you did the concert in LA!

I’ll be doing everything I can to visit at least one show, and hope to be there at the premiere. It’s a good thing this isn’t on the ‘other’ side of Germany because getting there from the Netherlands would be such a long drive. Now its just 3 hours :D

Jeez, I feel like a kid that just received a new gameconsole. Totally excited!

I hope there is a US performance in the works. This sounds absolutely awesome !!!

BTW, This would be FANTASTIC if recorder and placed on the Season 4.5 DVD or Blu-Ray.

So us European Battlestar fans are supposedly going to hear the season 4 music for the first time? :)

This sounds like a lot of fun, and Hagen is just about in my action radius. I’m going to take a close look at those dates.

First of all: I’m a huge fan of yours and your work on the show. I couldn’t imagine BSG without your music. So thank you!

Concerning your announcement…It’s just ‘frakin’ awesome! I live near Hagen, so I’ll be definitely go and see (listen) to your concert! Still 2 months from now…But it seems that I’ve waited on that moment since I bought your first soundtrack ;) .

As “fullman” already said: Keep up the excellent work!

By the way: Is there a chance to meet you after the concert, maybe for a “little” CD signing? This would be great! ;)

    …Oh, you’re kidding.

THREE DAYS after I leave Germany to return to England from my holiday?

    *cries*

Any news on London? Even at a ticket price that would kill my rent for six months?

Duuuude! That’s the coolest thing ever. Are there going to be performances in other European cities?

I’m like 2,5 hours away from Hagen (I’m in Amsterdam) and this is very tempting :D

You just made a German fan very happy. Un-frakking-believable!!!

Wow, great news !!!!!! 13 weeks, maybe I could try to go in Germany but is there a chance to see you in France too ? :)

Whoops, I forgot, I posted the link on a French forum ;)

Amazing! Too bad there were some incredibly bad voice acting choices for the german dub of BSG. Combined with an even worse tv channel that doesn’t have a problem with taking commercial breaks whenever they want to, this let to only a relatively small fanbase for BSG and your music in Germany.

I’ll definitely try to attend the premiere – after all, Hagen is only 4h away :)

Ahhh, BSG music in Europe? You’re not kidding, right?
I so want a ticket but… why oh why does it have to be in March?!

    *cries*

Wow, great to hear that your work is being picked up and rearranged for a ballet show. I’m interested on what it will sound like. Although it sounds amazing, I’m still a bit disappointed that it won’t be you performing with an orchestra, so I hope this isn’t the only appearance your music will make in Europe this/next year. Didn’t you have plans for a show of your own in Europe (also Germany, was it?), or is this what you were hinting at these past few months?

I’m not sure whether I’ll go visit the performance in Hägen yet; it’s not too far away (350km). Hmmmmm, ponder ponder…

OMG I have to get there, any news on if you might be coming to the sunny isle of the UK!? :D

Oh my goodness. I couldn’t be more jealous of the German fans if I tried.

I second and third and fourth everyone who is hoping some kind soul decides to record this performance, so that those of us in the US might be able to enjoy it. Aw.

Congratulations on getting your music out there in this new venue!

Holy crap, that’s amazing! I so so so wish I was in the right hemisphere for that. Seconding what everyone has said about hoping it’s taped. I’d buy that DVD in a heartbeat (even if it’s not the same as being there live).

Now, this seems like something totally do-able in New York, too. Not that I’m pushing for an east coast gig or anything… :)

Seriously, though, mazel tov Bear. That is utterly fantastic.

Hagen, that’s just two hours away from where I live. Too bad the premiere is in the middle of my exams, so I won’t be able to attend that one. I will definitly go another day though.
    I’m looking forward to this!

    I have some questions though:

    1) I see there is someone doing “orchestral arrangements”. What does this mean exactly?

    2) How much were you involved in the whole process of creating this? (apart from creating the music of course ;) )

I’m just curious, I’m definitly going. I’ve begun to spread the word already. (although it is 3:00 AM here. :P )

    Thomas…

    These are good questions:

    1) I see there is someone doing “orchestral arrangements”. What does this mean exactly?

It can mean varying things. In this case, it describes the process of translating scores that were written for orchestra and overdubbed soloists into a score that can be performed by a standard orchestra.

I didn’t have time to re-orchestrate the entire 35 minute piece, so I turned to Jim Hopkins. He re-arranged the pieces so that they could be performed without the unusual (and hard to acquire) instruments, such as duduk, erhu, bansuri, etc.

Jim’s tweaks to my scores simply make them playable by a live orchestra, and do not alter at all their “Battlestar”-quality.

    2) How much were you involved in the whole process of creating this? (apart from creating the music of course ;) )

On the musical side I was extremely involved. I, of course, wrote the music in the first place. I also chose the movements and their order. And I worked closely with Jim Hopkins as he re-orchestrated them to make sure that the music is translated well for this ensemble.

However, in terms of the visual component of the ballet, I’m not involved at all. Ricardo Fernando is handling all of that side of things, so I’m looking forward to seeing it in rehearsal in a few weeks.

    -Bear

Oh my frakking gods! Are you kidding me?? I live 20 minutes from there! Will you really attend the premiere? I am going to buy tickets tomorrow!! See you then in March! For sure!

    Bear,

Maybe not the right posting for this comment, but I just finished watching A Disquiet Follows My Soul, and I really loved the cue when Laura runs to Admiral Adama. It sounded to me like a new variation of Worthy of Survival, but I was hoping you could tell us more about it (please include it on the Season 4 soundtrack =D).

So are you saying one movement is a 35-minute piece or that the entire ballet is a 35-minute piece?

So did you approach Ricardo Fernando, or did someone seek you out? If it’s the latter, that’s quite flattering, Bear! And the fact that this performance of soundtrack music is occurring in a stage and dance setting. What a step for the validity of soundtracks as genuine art music in themselves, away from the screen. (Not that I’ve written a few papers on the matter…oh, wait…)

Best of luck on the running of your Euro-Premiere! You had better post in the future what a raving success it was. And there will definitely be a market for a DVD release of the premiere. :)

    tashley…

The entire ballet is about 36 minutes and change. As for the history of it, the theater approached me about doing the ballet and they did all the legal legwork to make it happen. I was quite honored that they had this idea.

    Hi everyone,

    Make some update here :
    http://www.last.fm/event/909584

Hope you’ll come to Paris one day ;-)

    Thank you, best regards.

You need to come to Australia to do this performance ASAP =D

FRACK! I don’t fracking believe it! Of course I was waiting for this for a long time and now that BSG music is finally coming to my home country, I am work related in North America and Asia. I really wanna cry right now…

    Hello Bear McCreary,

are you there, when the show starts?

Best regards froma very happy fan… :)

    Hi everyone,

    first off: YAY!!

Bear wrote: “PS: There are only a few weeks to spread the word, here, so I’d appreciate any help from you guys. …”

Really? That almost sounds like you don’t seem to think that you have a lot of fans over here. Or that not so many European fans read your blog. Well, let me tell you *this* then:

I just got off the phone with Theater Hagen, buying 2 tickets for the premiere on march 7th. Good thing I didn’t hesitate too long, because although the place has over 770 seats, judging from the very few choices of seats left for me, the premiere seems to be almost sold out already!

    – Way to go, Bear! :-)

Another thing: neither your blog post nor the official site of Theater Hagen mentions a choir. Will there be no choir for “The Signal” and “Diaspora Oratorio”?

And I’m still having trouble to imagine how they could possibly interpret the music and what it stands for into ballet. I’m somewhat afraid there might be stretches of actual on-stage carnage, with blood’n'guts splattering right into the third row… but we’ll see. ;-)

I’m *really* looking forward to seeing you at the premiere!

    So say we all!

    Stephan

    Hello Bear McCreary,

i’m wondering about the name of the show at the hompage of http://www.theater.hagen.de:
    “Three Faces”

is this your “Prelude to War”?

calaador… “i’m wondering about the name of the show at the hompage of http://www.theater.hagen.de:
“Three Faces” Is this your “Prelude to War”?”

Yes, I believe that “Three Faces” is the name of the entire evening, since the concert also includes two other works. My “Prelude to War” is on the bill that night.

Also, you asked if I’m there for the premiere performance, and I don’t yet know. PROBABLY… but my schedule is still up in the air.

    -Bear

Stephan… “judging from the very few choices of seats left for me, the premiere seems to be almost sold out already!”

    Wow! That’s exciting news!

Oh my gosh, I can’t tell you how exciting this is! I didn’t really expect a European performance of your moving music so soon, let alone in Germany, let alone as a ballet. No wonder tickets are selling faster than you can count ‘em…

Btw, I posted the news to Germany’s BSG website Caprica City
    http://www.caprica-city.de/index.php?pn_go=details&id=0002130
    http://caprica-city.de/forum/index.php?showtopic=4445

I also created a Facebook event
    http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=50317141338

As editors of Caprica City we’ll also try to find out a little bit more about the original idea of this ballett, and we are planning on reporting from the premiere. Hope to see everyone in Hagen…

    Pedda…

Thanks for helping spread the word! I’m excited that there are so many fans in Europe and look forward to bringing the “BG” score out to you all.

    -Bear

This is so great! My partner and me will definately go to the premiere on March 7th, actually I have already reserved class 1 tickets. It’s just a 6-hour drive from where we live in Switzerland (550 kilometers), absolutely worth the drive.

Bear, are you doing some signing before or after the show? I would really love to say hi to you in person. This would be such an honor to me!

Pedda, thank you so much for creating the Facebook event. I have just RSVP’ed ;)

Wow, that just made my ’til now stinky day… :)

While its great to see your music being performed in concert in Germany, you also have a lot of fans in England… I and many many others would love to attend night of your works as part of Proms Season at The Albert Hall in London. A night is already given over to the music of Murray Gold, the composer for the “Dr Who” tv series…
As for the fourth season soundtrack, only a double CD will do – there are simply too many wonderful pieces to choose from.

Awesome, just awesome. I will go to a performance just before the anti-NATO demonstrations in April. Hopefully the prelude to war will forever remain musical and in fiction! :)

Sandra… “Bear, are you doing some signing before or after the show?”

I don’t really know. It’s an interesting idea.

    Neowardog… Happy Birthday!

quiupu123… “Hopefully the prelude to war will forever remain musical and in fiction!”

Battlestar has a nasty habit of being too close to reality, doesn’t it. :)

    -Bear

    thanks :D

Wow! This will be great! I don’t care if it’s in germany, I’m coming from Norway! :)

    Bear and all BSG fans,
I’ve just received confirmation of my tickets! I will be in Hagen for the premiere. Anyone from the Netherlands (Utrecht area) going to the event?
Bear: you’re a great composer. Keep up the excellent work! By the way, do you know more about the release date of BSG4 Soundtrack?

    All the best,
    Gustavo

I’ll be coming to the premiere. Coming up from Munich 6 hours by train. Definitely worth the trip. I’m very excited.

Bear, I hope you will be there. What a great chance to not just hear your music live but also meet the great composer in person. Maybe on the aftershow party you’ll be available for a chat or some signing? That would be lovely. There’s probably quite a number of BSG fans there. But most of the audience will probably be local ballet goers who don’t know who you are…

    HI,
I read the show will run throughout the spring, for 13 weeks.
Only in germany ? will it be present on other european country ?

    Bear,

As requested by the first person here in this blog, ” Fullman ” please please tell us that this will be filmed and sold..especially considering so many of your U.S. fans wouldn’t possibly be able to see this in person.

    Bear,

Sorry for the lag in comms. There is a chance I’ll be in Paris until the 5th. If that’s the case, I’ll figure out a way to get to Hagen. Your music and German beer is too wonderful a combination to pass up!

    Matthew

“McCreary, geboren 1979, gehört zu den innovativsten jungen Komponisten der amerikanischen Film- und Fernsehszene. Er kommt aus der Schule von John Adams und Philipp Glass, ist selbst ein gefragter Akkordeonspieler und mischt in aufsehen erregender Weise minimal music, romantische Melodien und japanische Taiko-Musik.”

Ah ha! I always thought you were channeling some minimalist tendencies. Although I might be inclined to say “One Year Later” is a little more Harry Gregson-Williams…

And I do believe Großes Haus is full house – congrats!

    Dear Mr. McCreary, dear Bear,

A year and a half ago, I went to Phoenix to spend a week there with a friend (and as I am from Belgium that’s quite a bit of traveling for me). During that stay I bought the soundtrack of the second season of Battlestar Galactica. And since then it, and two other BSG soundtracks I bought when back in Belgium, have been my musical companion.
In a way they have become the soundtracks to my own personal evolution of the last year and a half.

When I heard of your concerts at the Roxy, I full-heartedly wished I could have been there, but financially and practically there was just no way I could have made it. But I set my intent. I promised myself I would be present at the next concert you would give. I was going to tap into my savings if necessary and I would fly to the other side of the globe, just to be able to hear the songs performed live.
I do have to mention that my personal favorites to date include pieces like ‘Prelude to War’, Passacaglia and The Shape of Things to Come, and I knew that in a setup like the Roxy it would have been impossible to perform them. Therefore, I let go of the hope of ever hearing these pieces live.

Flash forward to the beginning of this year… I read on one of your blogs that you were planning a European concert and my guess was that it would take place in England. And flying across the channel would have been financially so much better for me than flying over the big pond. So that message made me really happy.

But now it turns out that not only is the concert in Germany (a little under 3 hours by car from where I live in Belgium), it’s also orchestral music, with almost all of my favorites being performed, and the sweet hearts from Hagen theater give reductions to students, making this trip extremely economically feasible.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity and I’m hoping to get a chance to meet you at the Premiere.
Do you already have confirmation if you are going to make it to Germany on the March 7?
I would love to have a chance to meet you and thank you personally for creating music that touches my soul.

    With all my respect,

    Skating_Lientje

PS: I’m willing to bribe you to come over by promising you a couple of pounds of Belgian chocolates ;-).

    Skating_Lientje…

Your comment reminded me that I hadn’t confirmed officially, but YES I will be at the premiere performance. My flight has been booked.

See all you guys at the premiere!

    -Bear

    Hi Bear McCreary,

i’m very happy to hear that you will be there.

Is there a chance for your fans to meet you after the concert, or before in the theater?

    Dear Bear,

You just made my day :-))))).
On the official Hagen theater website it says something about a public Premiere Party following the concert. So maybe that would be the best venue to meet your fans (if it is indeed public, and we can get in)?

Anyhow, I’ll make good on my bribe and make sure to bring some Belgian chocolates.

Looking forward to seeing you there,

    Skating_Lientje

    Dear Bear,

I am so happy that you’re gonna be there !

This is gonna be, like the best day of my life !!
You are like a god to me (but don’t worry, I’m not gonna start a religion without your approval :D)
You are the greatest composer I know, really, and if I’m such a big fan of Battlestar Galactica it’s mainly thanks to its music ! Really, this music gave a soul to the show (not that I’m saying that BSG doesn’t have a soul if you turn the sound off)

I come all the way from south of France just to listen to your music and see you, and I know I won’t regret this travel to Germany even if it costs me a month rent :D

I hope that we will be able to meet you after the concert, for some talking and signing with your european fans.

See you at the show !

    Hi Bear,

I just found out about your blog yesterday, when someone on facebook told me about the concert. I got tickets for the show, train and hotel immediately. I’m eager to see your music performed live, and the ballet is a bonus (I’m curious!) …

Oh – your music is awesome. I am very much looking forward to maybe even meeting you so I can tell you this in person :)

Your blog is probably one of the most interesting ones I’ve ver come across. I have, so far, only read the blog entry about “Relevations” because I haven’t seen the later episodes yet. Amazing insights. Wow. Thanks for doing all of this – for me, personally, you manage to make both tv and the internet just… better!

    Greetings from Berlin,

    @ Bear:
cool ;) I’m looking forward meeting you and other fellow fans!

    @ calaador & Skating_Lientje:
Yes the Afterparty is open. On the official theater site they write the following:
    “Im Anschluss Öffentliche Premierenfeier”
That means: “Subsequent open Premiere party”. Yeah!

    Cheers from Switzerland!

I’m so excited, that finally something like this happens in Germany. And Hagen is right around the corner.

@ all the other Fans who plan to come: come costumed. Me and my friends will….

    Greetings from Castrop-Rauxel

    Hi Bear,

Congrats to the successful proposal to Raya! You’re a celebrated musician and soon a married man. Things are going very well for you… I wish you all the best.

The premiere is approaching fast now and I’m getting more and more excited.

    Hi Bear, hi to all,

I just returned from the Stadttheater in Hagen. This morning they held an free-of-charge general rehearsel for next week’s premiere. The choreographs were on stage and gave some background information and of course they performed some little pieces of “Prelude to War”. It’s just fantastic!!! You have to come to Germany and see it. They explained that they will have the taiko drummers and the other drummers on stage, performing more than 30 instruments.
I filmed two little pieces (2×2 min.) with my digital.
@Bear: I would like to share the little videos with your fans. What do you think, can I put them on YouTube? Please say yes !!!

    Thanks for this great idea
    Barbara

    Barbara-DUS…

You made it to the matinee preview today. Cool! I’m actually on my way to Germany right now, writing this from London Heathrow Airport. I’ll be checking out rehearsals all week and will attend the premiere performance on Friday.

Do me a favor, and don’t put anything on YouTube just yet. After all, even I haven’t seen it yet! :) Wait until after the premiere.

Hope to see you and everyone else this Friday.

    Sagen sie so wir alle!

    -Bear

    Hey Bear,
thanks for your reply. Of course I’ll respect your wish not to put anything on youtube yet. No problem!

A friend of mine (Frank) and I (Barbara) are hobby photographers with professional photo equipment and we would like to come to Hagen to take some pictures to document this very special event.
We would like to put the best pictures on Frank’s web page and of course we would give you the pictures to post them on your web page/blog. We do not have any commerical interest!
Do you see any chance that we could take pictures during dress rehearsal, premiere, or any other “prelude to war” performance? Could you talk to the people at the Theater? I am sure that you can convince them to give us a permission.

To give you an idea of the quality and style of our pictures please visit http://www.seitenstopper.de.

I hope that you’ll enjoy your time in Germany and I hope to hear from you soon
    Barbara (monstersuche@yahoo.de)

    Hi Bear,
The correct translation to “So say we all” is: “So sagen wir alle”.. but it sounds kind of stupid in German. Let’s keep the English wording ;)
I am sooo excited for next Saturday! Looking forward to meet you (and maybe Raya?) and other fellow fans.
    Kind regards,
    Sandra

pls, no more spoilers for the show…

i want to enjoy the show on saturday! :)

    see you there (witout BSG-Uniform…!)

I’m home again. It was teriffic. And meeting you in person was fun, too, although I completely forgot how to speak english. Hope to see the pics your fiancée took of us (the guys in uniforms) on your blog.
Thank you (and all the others who were involved) for a very entertaining evening.

    Greetings
    Daniel

Terrific it sure was. Can’t get the sound of “The Signal” out of my ears.

Will there be any video recording of it?

    Daniel…

Glad you guys enjoyed the show! I’m glad I got a picture with you guys in uniform. You looked great!

    Joaz…

I’m hoping that we can do something with a video release. Keep an eye out on the blog for details, but I wouldn’t expect any news for a few months at the very least.

    —-

I hope to post an entry about the performance in the next few days.

    -Bear

    Bear,
Congratulations on the success of the premiere of Three Faces. The public was in awe!
I particularly enjoyed Passacaglia, The Resurrectio Hub and Roslin & Adama. The H20 dance was very original, don’t you think?
I hope the show will come to Holland as well.
Good luck with scoring Caprica and with the release of BSG 4 soundtrack.
    All the best,
    Gustavo

    Hello Bear McCreary,

im back in Hamburg now (400km from Hagen), and the show was GREAT.

All people do a great job there.
Very nice arrangements from your Music.
After the show i have all the night “The Hup”, “Lauras Running” and the scence from the dead earth in my mind.

The idea to integrate the dancers in to the music with thier staves was very nice!

But i only missed little bit the power from taiko-drums.
What is the difference between the soundtracks and Hagen?
The place where the drums are standing in Hagen, or how many the used there?

After all: The music and dance-performance was very good and funy.
Hope to see more like this.

Is ther any chance to get the music or the complet show as movie?

And at last: THANKS for subscribing my CD-Booklet!

    Best regards,
    calaador

    @ Bear: Thank you.

@ calaador: I think the taiko drums were great, even a little too loud sometimes, they drowned out the orchestra, wich was a little pity. But I didn’t think, that the drummers had to keep it down, but the orchestra should have played louder ;-).

Oh, and “The Hub” has definitely to go on the album…

Wow, what a night. I think it’s safe to say that all the BSG fans who had come indeed left happy.

First of all it needs to be said that while for a BSG fan’s ears the third “face”, which featured Bear’s music, at least music-wise probably was the most beautiful one, choreography-wise and dancing-wise all of the three “faces” were superb.

Probably most of the readers here didn’t really know what to expect from a “BSG ballet”. It was not the nutcracker or swan lake type of ballet with dancers on their tiptoes all the time. It was much more Modern Dance than classical ballet and featured many acrobatic dance routines performed by incredibly gifted dancers. Prelude To War especially featured some nice special effects such as laser beams and video backdrops and a choreography including flashlights. Another stunning fight inspired choreography included the dancers as parts of the percussion section with the dancers batting their sword-like wooden sticks intercut with the Taiko drums. A definite highlight was Roslin’s and Adama’s theme staged by a male and female dancer in a water tank. Bear’s music came across extremely well and sounded great performed by the highly talented orchestra and drummers ensemble. Judging by the intensive applause and loud cheers not only BSG fans but everyone in the audience was obviously profoundly wowed by this wonderful show. If there is anything negative to say about it then only that it was too short. I enjoyed every second of it and after it had ended I would have loved to experience it all over again.

While most of the “regular” audience left right after the show, the aftershow party was mainly crowded with BSG fans. And Bear made every single one of us happy. He didn’t mind at all signing hundreds of CD booklets, DVDs or whatever fans asked him to sign. Moreover he took the time to turn every autograph into a personal dedication and was even willing to pose for photos individually with each of the fans so that everyone left with a great personal souvenir. Sporting no star attitude whatsoever Bear took the time to even chat with each of the fans and to get involved in interesting conversations. The same can be said about the lovely Raya who also happily chatted with all the fans and signed CDs. Both Bear and Raya were very busy with enthusiastic fans all the time, during the show’s breaks and throughout the whole aftershow party. I hope they got to enjoy this experience…

Some of us fans (from German fansite caprica-city.de) were so lucky to meet Bear and Raya before the show in a nearby cafe where we all sat together and chatted. How cool is that?! For over an hour we discussed various BSG stuff and Bear provided interesting insights into the production of our favorite show. As you already know by this blog, unlike other stars who cannot do much more than superficially smile into cameras, Bear indeed has interesting things to say.

BEAR, RAYA, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL EVENING. YOU REALLY WERE THERE FOR YOUR FANS AND DEVOTED YOUR TIME TO US WHICH IS NOT SOMETHING TO BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED AND WAS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREERS.

Agree! I still have this stupid dreamy grin on my face ;)
The performance was fantastic, even if ballet isn’t my thing at all. Raya and Bear were so nice and I talked to them a lot. Raya’s explanation of how they recorded her songs in many different languages was quite interesting only to name one enthralling topic we were talking about!
Their appearance at the café prior to the performance left me nonplussed. I didn’t know they arranged a meeting with the German BSG fanclub and when they entered the café I first thought that my brain does tricks on me.
Now I am looking forward to an European Battlestar concert and to the 4th season BSG soundtrack (and the special edition box Bear was talking aobout) ;)!

    Hello Bear!

Thank you again for a great great evening in Hagen!
Did I disgruntle you, when i asked about your first name? I was just to nervous to express myself properly! (sorry for that)

I study direction near Hagen and therefore I enjoy a good score!
Thats why i came to “Three Faces” firstly…
and secondly because of Battlestar :)
I’ve listenend to your composing for Battlestar since i heard “Passacaglia” in “Kobols last gleaming” and after that I became a true true fan of your music.

The whole show on Saturday was naturally fantastic, as everyone said before…
BUT somehow I missed the choir for “Diaspora Oratorio” :)

Will there be another concert like this in Europe in the future?

I hope you and Raya enjoy your visit in Germany (besides the rainy weather *g*)
Good luck for the future and maybe I can win you someday for scoring my movies. :)

    Byebye!

No choir, eh? Were the choir parts for The Signal/Diaspora reorchestrated for brass or something?

Yes was also noticing this too, but that did very well IMO. Didn’t sound like something’s missing.

But music wise, I was a bit disappointed by the score of “The Hub”. Especially the parts where the sequence played with a new, louder instrument just overlapping the still playing one.

I hope Bear will solve this a bit more creatively for season 4 soundtrack :)

I’m pretty excited about the possibility of catching a performance during my trip to Hamburg in mid-April. Hagen is a bit out, but I’ll make the effort.

I love Taiko drum performances. Judging from the previous comments, it’s going to be loud! If anyone gets the chance to see a Taiko drum group called “Yamato”, please don’t miss them. Very entertaining stuff.

@calaador if you read this. What time does the show end and do you think there are still trains from Hagen back to Hamburg?

Hello there. I’m hoping that one day you’ll bring the concert somewhere around Sweden but until then I would like to ask for specific dates during which you will perform the “Prelude to War” concert?

A friend of mine has been a fan of yours since he first heard the music of “Battlestar Galactica” and I’m thinking about giving away a ticket for your concert as an early birthday gift.

I would also like to ask if you have any plans for future performances in Europe? Just in case it wouldn’t work out during spring.

    Something to Say?
